  • Join Jennifer from The Flowering Farmhouse for a "windy" Walk Through The First Year Dahlia Seedling Patch. While dahlias are traditionally grown from tubers, these dahlias are grown from seed as part of Jennifer's dahlia breeding program. In this field are over 600 dahlias grown from seed.
    Learn how Jennifer decides which dahlias from the breeding patch will get to stick around for another growing season and which ones will get cull. In this video Jennifer talks about dahlia forms, head positioning, stem length, and flower attachment to the stem.
    In this video with The Flowering Farmhouse, you'll also learn how Jennifer saves seed from her dahlia seedlings including how she "milks" the seed pods.
    Did you see any dahlias in this video that you liked? Or have you tried growing dahlias from seed? Be sure to leave a comment below and let us know what you think about this video. Also, don't forget to subscribe to ‪@TheFloweringFarmhouse‬ for more gardening tips & advice! Thanks for joining us for a walk through the Dahlia Breeding Patch!

    *Unfortunately it's been quite windy at the farm so we apologize for the wind in the background of this video. We are working to upgrade our recording equipment to help eliminate some of this noise. ;)

    Very informative to someone like me. I was curious how to seed. and name my own flower. Now I know what to look for.

    Thank you!! This video is exactly what I've been looking for, for a while. So informative and answers a lot of my questions about dahlia breedig. Love to hear your criteria and what you are looking for. As well as seeing many seedling results from different seed parents. Now im eager to try my hand at dahlia breeding my self!

    Gorgeous varieties. For us not growing for bouquets, they're all keepers, especially for seedlings. I hope you are selling those tubers you won't keep. Among my roses, all of them look fantastic

    Thank you for a nice video! Here in Sweden it´s very difficult to find good white/blush ball dahlias that has strong stems. I hope for some good new ones in the future!

    I love your content information, I haven’t found another flower farmer who is so precise in descriptions. thank you…A suggestion, your mike is distorted with the wind and viewers can’t hear your thoughtful information. Perhaps…voice overs…or a better wind microphone setup…thanks🌸

      Hi Linda, I did make a note in the description about the wind. This was filmed on my phone. Since these are free videos, I have a limited budget, but hopefully with time I'll be able to upgrade my microphone to improve sound quality. We get tons of wind here.

    Thank you for sharing - I found this fascinating. Can I ask if the seeds were from open pollinated or hand pollinated flowers. I'm assuming hand pollinated since your were so particular about wanting to grow a blush variety?

    I keep hearing that seedlings will cause single flowers. Is this true?
    I have about 100 seedlings going this year. Many from Cafe Au Lait and others from Swan Island Dahlia.

      It depends on whether or not you had a bunch of open centered dahlias in your field

      These are all ones I've grown from seed as part of our dahlia breeding program. Hopefully we'll have some of these for sale in the future. We do sell our tubers in the spring at www.thefloweringfarmhouse.com

      Hi Sandy, I did put in the caption that we have a lot of wind here. Unfortunately I need to invest in a better mic, but these are free videos. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to upgrade the mic!

    I hope they will turn out; not blooming yet 😊

    Fascinating about the chromosomes and how very much colours can change during pollination.
    So my ceme de cassis "seeds" I collected might not look anything like the parent "tuber" plant, but could be a nice surprise.
    I look forward to learning more.😊
    Jo.

      @TheFloweringFarmhouse  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      that is correct! They get 4 sets of chromosomes from each parent for a total of 8. You'll have to let me know what you end up with!

    Do you ever sell dahlias seed?
    Also, you say that you plant your seed dahlias 9 inches apart. How many do you plant across the width of the row?

    • @TheFloweringFarmhouse
      @TheFloweringFarmhouse  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do sell dahlia seeds in the winter! I will probably plant them a little further apart next year as they grew so large this year. I have 36 inch rows with 2 plants per row.

      I hope to be selling some of my seedlings in two years. I have several 2nd year seedlings that made the cut to be grown again next year. Stay tuned!

    So when you pull the petals out don't that take its seed out??
    I have never hear of a buyer complain about a facing down bloom or bobbely! I can't imagine all that extra worry over your flowers your going through. You did a great job it shows but It works out with how they are when there cut for my end, it gives it character!!❤

    • @TheFloweringFarmhouse
      @TheFloweringFarmhouse  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am pulling the back petals first. You need to pull these to encourage the petals to drop. This way they don't stay inside when the flower starts to close up. When that happens, it's harder for seed to form. Buyers don't usually complain unless they are using them for design work. I am breeding for dahlias that can meet the American Dahlia Society benchmarks ;)
