Mom jeans are called "mom jeans" because anyone who was a teenager in the early 2000's, you most likely had a mom who was still wearing jeans that were in style in the early 90s which were high waisted, loose fitted, peg leg jeans. Tina Fey made that SNL sketch probably because there were so many moms at that time that were just hanging onto that style of jeans and continuing to wear them even though low rise flares were the current jean style.
I remember wearing my low rise flares and wondering why mom was still wearing high waisted jeans.
So when mom jeans came back in style, the term "mom jeans" had already been coined by my generation to describe the kind of jeans that our moms wore. 😂

    • @nutcracker2916
      @nutcracker2916 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Probably because Moms really did/do know best and that low rise Jeans look awful on most people. Unless you're a top model with an iron board flat stomach. Muffin top/ Homer Simpson type tummy effect , really wasn't , isn't a good look.

Very interesting. I was born in the late 1950s, so have seen and worn LOTS of jean styles. I LOVED the flares of the 1970s (my teenage years! LOL). We not only had them in denim, we had them in pinwale corduroy as well as mini and maxi skirts in denim and pinwale corduroy. My all time favourites because they flatter my figure best is a bootcut jean.

Love it, thank you! I think the 2000s skinny jeans revival was truly due to The Libertines/Pete Doherty/Babyshambles around 2004/2005, and Hedi Slimane was taking pics of the band (earlier as well) and releasing essentially the same looks for men's Dior. Before this, the indie look was more bootcut. I remember making my own modifications to pants because the skinny style wasn't in stores at all around 04/05. Then by 2007-2010 they were everywhere.

Great video! Love the connection bw rock/pop/rap music and jeans styles, very insightful! And love that you gave Kriss Kross their props for popularizing baggie jeans, they didn’t start it, it started in the hood, men in prisons
couldnt wear belts so their pants sagged, and oversized jeans were spreading to the hoods around the US. But Kriss Kross brought it to a broader audiences and made it even more popular in the neighborhoods it was already trending!

Laughing because I’ve lived through most of these styles (other than the original gold rush Levi’s!😂), but the Levi 501s came back in the fifties and 80’s! My favorite pairs were naval dungarees bought at the military base PX and embroidering patches to sew on in the 70’s. They were cheap, light weight and had the wide legs. (Hoping you’ll confirm the style is good for Soft Naturals in your next video!🤞) The only trend you didn’t mention was the “Designer Jeans”- Calvin Klein and Gloria Vanderbilt were the all the rage in the 80’s. Too bad it drove the price of “denim pants” up and out of the casual dress category. But it made jeans “posh”! Can’t wait for next weeks jeans for the body typing. Thank you for two in depth videos about denim’s illustrious history.

    Aly,
That dropped waist look did not come from Kriss Kross. It actually originated in American prisons. When an inmate wore his pants this way it meant his ass was available for the taking. When I patrol the various streets and neighborhoods of Tampa years ago, I saw so many people wearing their pants like this and half of them had no clue where the trend came from. Some that I told during my time of patrolling were shocked and hiked their pants up real quick.

WRT the history of “jeans”. Although a sturdy/heavy fabric may have been created in Italy and reimagined in France, the methods/design (rivets, stitching, cut, dyes, etc) for the “jeans” we wear today was first created by Jacob Davis and sold by Levi Strauss. The word “jeans” may have been taken from the town where the fabric making method originated (possible), but the original Levi’s were a unique design. i.e. Many people made skirts, dresses, etc out of the similar fabrics to the ones used by Coco Chanel, but that doesn’t mean they deserve credit for her designs.

FYI: women were in the Navy then. As, they are now. My 19yo daughter is actually on Navy deployment for 10 mths as we speak. Don't want to take away from all the brave women in the service branches of the world past & present.

Skinny jeans look good on a woman with body/legs for it. Skinny jeans should never be worn by men. NEVER!

well, that's an extreme statement. I know quite a few men who look amazing in skinnies. why wouldn't they wear it? skinnies are the same for men and women - if you have the legs for it, skinny fit is AMAZING

@@MakeyJu Because grown men's bodies are not built for it. TO have a large or semi-large torso and then toothpick legs looks funky.

@@thereturningshadoware you of misconception that all men have 1 body type? because that's not true 😂 they have as many as women do. having "toothpick legs" is completely fine but not all men have those. and at the same time, large torso is not something that all men have. you sound like you saw 2 men max in your whole life 🤔
and even with all that combined I see nothing wrong with big top, skinny bottom combination? I personally like it very much. and like I said, it can be great depending on the body type, same as literally any clothing piece out there

The opposite it is correct not to mention it if you content is not about politics and you are an educated expert. And do yourself a favor and research PrOPERLY about this complicated background of this war. Since 2014 when the conflict started thousands of innocent russian ethnictiy ukrainians have been slaughtered, russian language forbidden and re-education camps in chinese style for no reason living there for hundreds of years.
All opposition gets forbidden and branded criminal pro russian even if it is not the case. NATO has fueled this war prime like most others of the last decades and right at the moment is "saving" ukranian state gold and implementing great reset agenda. It is SICK that after afghanistan and libya majority still lets themselves so easily brainwashed and on top i sannoying other.
