I'm a romantic and prefer mini skirts in most of the styles described. I usually don't like skirts as long as depicted because I am a petite height, and I find longer skirts to make me feel drowned in material. Mini skirts usually look proportionate on me compared to longer cuts.

I’m a petite soft natural and I agree with you about the petite thing. anything other than a mini skirt makes me look so frumpy, boxy and drags me down completely.

I used to wear a mini length when I was younger, but now that I'm older I wanted to wear something longer and was worried I'd end up with the usual pencil skirt recommendation for the hourglass, you know 😄. I tried a longer one, but with higher waist and looked amazing. It's always good to have options 😊

I am a theatrical romantic and I recently bought a tulip skirt for the first time, It has become my all-time favorite style of skirt, I feel so elegant in it and It compliments my body SO well. I am excited to see it as a recommendation for TR types because that means your advice has really been helping me learn what looks good on me, I'm finally getting a better sense of style due to your videos Aly! Thank you!

I'm thinking of buying a tulip skirt after seeing this video. I feel more confident that I will be able to choose clothing that works for me after understanding my type. It's very hard finding clothes without understanding how to dress for my body type. I am a romantic with some theatrical romantic traits.
Guys have it so much easier than women when it comes to clothes. We have endless possibilities, color combinations, styles, etc. All guys have to do is put on a blue or black suit and they look fabulous. One evening when my husband and I were getting ready to go out to dinner, he saw me trying on pants, skirts, dresses, long sleeved blouse, etc., trying to find a good look. He finally said, "the problem is that women have _too many choices_ of what to wear. I'm amazed they ever make it out of the house!" He is right, we have endless combinations and colors, fabrics, etc. It's all very confusing!

I am a Romantic, with a couple of theatrical romantic qualities. I have always been told that I look like Drew Barrymore, but with a smaller more rounded chin and larger eyes. Drew had a breast reduction in her early 20's, so her body shape has been altered. I look like Drew before her reduction, lol.
It is true that long, floor length skirts look terrible on me! I wanted so bad to do the maxi skirt trend that was so popular several years ago, but as soon as I tried one on I knew it was the exact wrong style for me. I look better in knee-length or a little higher. Uneven hemlines are more flattering to my shape, just as predicted for the romantic type. This is such an interesting subject and I really appreciate Aly doing a deep dive into the types. It is so helpful to me!

Hi Aly. Great video and perfect timing. I started de-cluttering my Autumn wardrobe. As a Theoretical Romantic I think I am already doing what is right. These are all the skirts I like and don't like. Can you check something that I read. France was where the mini skirt originated as a street style. An area of London the girls were rolling up the waistbands to shorten the length. Vivienne Westwood also made these skirts. And then along came Mary Quant who popularized these skirts into mainstream fashion.

Hi Aly! I love your videos, specially about body tipes and make up. I've been wondering about something... would you mind do a video about how to enhance small breasts? Cause I'm an A cup and I find hard to find content about it... for 2 main reasons: 1. Usually leads to "go for really low necklines" (it's not my style). 2. Ends up being lots of sugestions to give a ilusion of bigger boobs without using padded bras.
I would love to see your lovely way to talk about female body giving insights about it. Just ways to enhance and not falling in mistake that will actually make it look flattened. :)

I’ve always liked maxis but I’m 5’3 98-100 lbs and maxis look too long and huge on me. I like the Mary Quant 60’s mini skirt look because it looks good on petite women like me. I like knife pleat mini skirts that remind me of uniform skirts but 2:10 accordion pleats are cute too. Most of the skirts I sew for myself are knife pleat mini skirts, but I wish I could pull off long maxis.

    • @kaalad3666

I'm 5'0 ~100 lbs and I feel the same way! I actually made a maxi skirt for myself and it ended up being shorter than planned. It hits just above my ankles and it actually looks good that way. I'm a gamine and cropped clothes showing wrists and ankles are recommended and I have to say I agree! Maybe you could try that and see how it works for you :)

    • @teresacarle294
      @teresacarle294 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If you ever wish to try a maxi length skirt, 🤔 think about...
      (1) A LONG SPLIT. A wrap skirt is most ideal. A side split if you're more modest. 😱It doesn't have to be some dramatic va-va-voom gap, but the point is that it shows a 👁️👁️peek-a-boo glimpse of your legs at strategic moments when you walk, stand, or sit just so.
🧐NOTE: If you're more daring, even on a center button front placket that goes from top to bottom on a maxi-length skirt, consider unbuttoning from hem to knee or higher.
🌬️ I always wear bike shorts under my skirts for modesty anyway.☀️It also reduces the possibility of moisture💧 between thighs in hot weather too🥵.
😉In any event, a long split in your skirt will give the impression your legs go on much longer ⬆️ under all that material.
      (2) SHOE OPTIONS:
      (A) Going natural? Nude (aka skin colored) shoes are the single most 🏆winning tool in your arsenal〰️no matter your skirt length.
BETTER: if the toe is pointed. Lower vamp, even better.
BEST: if they have a heel, wedge, or platform (in that order) of some sort. The higher, the better.
😁Your skin colored shoe will make it magically seem as if your legs continue off into infinity. No stopping. It gives the illusion your feet simply 🪄"disappear."
      (B) Prefer matching? Either a coordinating &/or contrasting colored shoe will visually chop you off at the feet 🪓. FULL 🛑. It is a harsh break💔 and is visually jarring🤣.
FIX: Your shoes & hosiery must match with a prominent color in your skirt. Say in the case of the animal print skirt, it could work pairing all black, brown, or camel (to match exact color print🐾, preferably the most dominant color) with the same colored hosiery & shoe.
      BETTER: pointed, low vamp shoe.
      BEST: also a heeled shoe.
      (3) JACKET. 🚫 Avoid pairing with a hip length cardigan or coat, esp. if boxy, oversize, or unstructured. 🤼This additional horizontal line will compete unfavorably with the longer skirt length. 🤣 It will also exaggerate the length of the torso, making the person's legs seem stumpy🪵.
BETTER: short or cropped @ waist like a moto jacket or tailored blazer. This will bring the 👀 eyes up, & give the impression you're "all legs" underneath that long skirt.
BEST: a coordinating trench coat similar in hem length &/or longer than skirt. Bonus: the sash of the jacket tied in back will create a more feminine structure at the waist & help draw the eye up. This will visually extend ↕️ your entire silhouette.
🤗 No matter your height or weight, these tips will help elongate your vertical ⏸️ line. These tricks change how the 👀 eyes visually perceive your overall silhouette↕️.
🆘 Employing these "rules" will help you stack the deck in your favor as best as you can. It gives you more control to consider how variables like body type, lifestyle, climate, or other personal preferences also impact our style choices too.

@@kaalad3666 Yes, it 💯% can make a massive difference where our sleeve & pant hem lengths stop on our body.
🚫 Petite, but still need to pay close attention to balance ⚖️ & proportion. Having a low waist on an ⏳ hourglass figure gives me an exaggerated torso🥺. As a result, the cut of certain garments can easily make my legs seem short🤣.
Have several sweet spots on my legs for sure. This is based on my endomorph frame that is a softer & rounder muscle mass/fat ratio.
My "maxi" range is between ankle & the lower curve of calf for a tea length skirt or a cropped pant. Translation: min. 1-4" above ankle works best.
My best "midi" literally ends mid-knee. That breakpoint helps minimize my slightly wider interior femur bone. It also reveals where my upper calf starts to curve.
My "mini" range is 4-6.5" above knee for skirts. For shorts, I can go 8-10" up from knee before thigh muscles start to widen & curve to meet hips.
😖As for sleeves, long ones get on my nerves. They're only good if need sun/bug/cold protection. Otherwise, I tend to scrunch, roll or cuff on forearms. The good news about that is when you push long sleeves up, it also visually raises the impression of our waist.
      💚 Bridget from Cali☘️

Stupid question but how do you find out your body type? I've tried those body type calculators and I always get hour glass shape but I don't look like I have the typical hour glass shape. My butt and bust is large but I look pretty rectangular with wide shoulders. So I'm thinking I'm inverted triangle 🤷‍♀️ I've lost 70lbs on my weight-loss journey so trying to dress my new body is so hard because my old styles make me look frumpy and bigger than I really am. Can anyone help? I just want to enjoy my hard work but I still dread clothes shopping

    • @julieme7927
      @julieme7927 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Try find a body calculator that asks for 4 measurements - shoulders, bust, waist and hips. If your shoulders, bust and hips are all the same or within a couple of inches of each other and your waist is at last 9 inches smaller then you might be an hourglass. How tall are you? I think you'd probably love a wrap dress even if you're an inverted triangle as long as there isn't a very puffy sleeve ot something which would only make your shoulders look wider. Generally speaking you should try balance your shape so maybe a fitted t-shirt or tailored blouse that nips in at the waist with a high waisted skirt that has some volume but not too much and high waisted jeans in a stretch fabric so that it sucks your tummy in.
If you're interested in finding out your kibbe type then go onto the playlist on this channel and you'll find the "kibbe test".

Selena Gomez is the best example of this phenomenon. Another creator has an excellent video on why Selena is not a soft natural ( soft classic was their guess)

As always I am amazed of how accurate it is. There is something else I would add when choosing a skirt. Torso to leg length proportion is important and hip shape. Some women have flat bottoms, some rounded. Some women have widest part of the hips on top and it goes narrower towards thighs. Some women have widest part at the thigh level. And how skinny/ fat you are is also a factor. That would be secondary to what Aly said however.

This was wonderful for someone like me. I love skirts and dresses so this is invaluable. Finding nicely made skirts is a drudgery thought. I find many sites even major department stores have either few skirts or the skirts are really for those 22 and younger. LOL! Modest websites can be too frumpy. This helped me understand why certain skirts never looked right on me. Amazing looking back...

  • @kickitlikekirra

FN here. I've always struggled with skirts, as I feel like so many bulk out my hips. What I've so far learned usually works for me (with the help of Aly, Kibbe, and lots of thrift store experimentation):
Straight mini-mini skirts, wrap maxi skirts (with medium-stiff fabrics), A-lines with some movement (not stiff and symmetrical, yet with some structure - like a linen), sarongs all dayyy. And I've noticed longer skirts are better when they sit a *little* higher on my hipline.
Hope this might give some ideas to other FNs and I hope to get more ideas!

    • @princessstella6552
      @princessstella6552 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The good thing for FNs is that they can wear any length of skirts from mini to maxi as long as the fabric is not stiff and minimal details.

@@princessstella6552 I guess so in theory. In practice, skirts are still what I struggle with most - the challebge includes trying to pair tops with them. But I'm learning! I've found some pretty dependable silhouettes. :)

Yes, good points. The worst right now is that midi skirt that’s popular with the tiny crisp pleats and no shape from waist to hips! Makes me look wide and shapeless! A fabric with a medium weight and a shape that is loose and carefree are good in skirts. I love linen! A midi a line skirt with a woven fabric is great with an oversized blouse and sweater and boots. I like maxi skirts but gathered full skirts also make me look like I don’t have a waist. Good tip on the wrap style!

Again. Aly talks about Image IDs not the stereotypical body shapes. Any Image Ids can have a curvy, busty, or straight figure etc. However, it's a different approach when it comes to DK's image IDs because he doesn't only reffering to those body shapes but also the overall yin/yang balance of each person. Yin characteristics are short, softer flesh, rounded and lush features; whilst yang is tall, elongated, taught flesh, narrow, and sharp. Romantic is All yin, and Dramatic is all yang.
Classic is a balanced yin/yang (think of 2 different fruits that mixed in a blender), Natural is a soft yang (sharp yang that has a little mixture of yin that creates a blunt and width I guess), and Gamine is a combination of yin/yang (not mixed in a blender because you can point out which is the yin feature and the yang feature)
For more details, please watch her earlier videos about 13 Body Types, and she have a playlists for that. Hope it helps 😉

Question about the soft gamine skirts: I noticed by your dresses recommendations you say it's best not to have a fabric that is too soft, too romantic. By the skirts recommendation I see a lot of very soft and romantic fabrics. Why is that the skirts can be very romantic type skirts, and dresses not?
