To counter Pyro, you must do the secret Soldier trick, formally known to all but forgotten to time as the Pyro himself burned it out of memory during jungle inferno: Zap him with the Righteous Bison.
Also, in terms of comboing the Rocket Launcher with the Shotgun, it's probably better to use the Reserve Shooter against them as if you manage to pop them in the air, you can just easily kill them in 1-2 mini-crit shots and this can go for any class beside Pyro which is very satisifying to pull off

As a pyro main, I don’t think we are all rivals, we’re all friends! Every time I’m being so nice to soldiers, they always drop their pieces, I’m so happy to send them back!
What i love to do when fighting pyros is trick them into hunting me where i shoot rockets by corner picking and aiming at his feet. It is very useful at least against selfish pyros who want to hunt you. Ofc you need to master corner rocket shooting which can be tricky if you use the original since you expose yourself more compared to default rl.
I have a personal observation - If you charge a Pyro in a 1v1, jump. Not rocket jump, just jump. I've noticed that A LOT of Pyros airblast while you are in the apex of your jump, as if expecting you to fire your rocket from the biggest height advantage you can. Then you can fire you rocket. This works surprisingly often, I have killed Pyro players much better than me with it. Also, it is worth considering shooting behind a Pyro. It deals less damage, because msot Pyros simply run at you so splash damage fall-off is at play, but is rarely expected and often requires Pyro to flick his mouse to reflect - but that causes the rocket to be refelcted into outer space instead of straight at you.
To any pyro mains here, remember that when airblasting. It should come down to prediction and reacting. And to utilize your secondary when dealing to a gunboats soldiers, while they reload their next rocket
This video was really good. I learned a few things from this. Next time. Remember to install security cameras before the backdoor gets opened. Thanks that stormtrooper that knows tf2
Things ive found out from extended use of the dragons fury to take back to stock is that: Don’t put yourself in a situation where prediction airblasting is the only option you have. As flashy as it is, its the equivalent of a trickstab. You can use techniques to boost its effectiveness, but its still better to not have to rely on it as a go too.
Airblast is hated for the same reason the natasha or old sandman are: taking away an ability. Airblast is able to not only take away your ability to deal damage but also to move or simply run away. Negating abilitys just make you feel helpless, wich is the last thing you want to feel like. Especially if it happens when you dont expect it and it brings you down from a high moment (like shooting a rocket and thinking youve already won)
Hey it has its place in tf2, same as rocket jumping. While yes it can feel frustrating, counters need to exist. As for the movement impairing, the Pyro has to be close to you to use that thing to begin with, so stay out of his range. Airblast can still be played around because airblast has an interval. If you shoot during the interval, you can still shoot them. If you are shooting from long range... why are you shooting form long range? Those are really easy reflects and even if the Pyro doesn't reflect the damage falloff is gonna cut you.
As a Pyro main, one trick a Soldier can pull that usually gets me (at least in close quarters) is faking a reload; IE, firing one rocket, pressing the reload key to start the animation and then fire before you properly load. Farther away we can react to the rocket as it comes, but close up we often rely on mind games, prediction/intuition and animations to keep timing since we're basically forced to air-blast a parallel dimension ahead of our opponent. Said close-range can be achieved via quickly jumping and/or bombing with the Manntreads, flanking to catch us off-guard or just walking up during air-blast downtime (weather that be the firing speed itself or when we switch to a non-primary weapon).
My personal strats are weird but work a surprising amount of times in pubs. One is to literally just sit there and reload. Many pyros will focus so hard on reflecting that they forget to go on the offensive and just sit there, letting you load back up; some just airblasting randomly and freeing themselves up for a rocket. Another thing I focus on shooting “whiff” rockets that are intentionally poorly placed. Some pyros will focus on the rocket leaving the launcher and not the rocket’s trajectory, so intentionally firing a rocket way off course can get them to airblast early and leave them open. And even if they do manage a reflect on it, the weird angle can make it hard to do anything effectively with that rocket.
I’ve found corners to be pretty useful. If you’re near a corner and you’ve shown the pyro that you are willing to shoot rockets at them, quickly go around the corner them jump back and shoot a rocket, they may not be expecting it and accidentally take damage. Then if you time it right you can shoot another rocket just before the go around the corner to deal more damage and at that point you can just pull out your shotgun and one shot the pyro(or hope that the pyro doesn’t airblast your rocket again)
That SFM BLU Soldier you had for the vid is the cutest damn thing ever. I'm so busy fawning over him I can hardly spare the heart to mind you teaching people ways to counter me!
sometimes i find a reflecting pyro and i proceed to walk forward without shooting my rockets, they also walk backwards in absolute fear not doing anything but just waiting for my rocket, after it they always get murdered by someone else while walking backwards.
I used to main heavy and I sometimes forgot pyros existed and wondered why everyone complained about him but after becoming more of a solider player I finally started to get it
is this why I have seen so many shotgun idiots running around trying to kill me and failing miserably but still being way more annoying than they need to be.
Here's a tip, respect the Dragon's Fury. Its definitely the hardest weapon in pyro's toolkit to use so most using it will be easy kills. But when used correctly, it has a higher dps then a heavy's mini gun and has a longer range then the stock flamethrower. And unlike the phlog, it still has airblast. That said, it has a 2 second cooldown between airblasts, so tricking them to waste it is even more effective. Just remember to avoid their shots or they will melt you.
Decent video. But you need to work on your pacing. Id recommend getting inspired by FishOnAStick and Lazy Purple, they seem like prime examples. Well, their serious videos, that is, like bad weapon academy and HIFTP. Other than that, I did enjoy this vid, and learned more about countering a soldier trying to counter me. Yeah, I main pyro, and i can tell you, if you react to the projectile correctly, the libertylauncher can be just as easy to reflect as stock. Just use a shotgun. :)
In Lazypurple's video, pyros can 1v1 heavies (POSSIBLY EVEN WITH A MEDIC) with The Panic Attack and Flamethrower, so you could still end up dead but just bring your heavy and medic and possibly your other soldier down with you BUT If there is too many heavies or soldiers, then they will try to get to THEIR team and call for help but if there are like 2 or 3, they will just team up and just spam schadenfreude at you and your team NON STOP
The tip with the faking a rocket is good but I usually do is flick a rocket shot to bait them or shoot one to their left to push them into the corner then pull out a shotgun usually a PA.
Pyro: *gets ready to reflect my rocket* Me: *people think they can outsmart me.. Maybe. Maybe. But i have yet to find person who can outsmart bullet.* (pulls out shotgun)
What I sometimes do is quickly flick my mouse straight up into the air right as I fire to force out an air blast and then do the laugh taunt. Makes for some pretty funny moments where the enemy pyro sometimes just sits there and thinks about life
I love the shotgun, I have alot of moments where I fight a Pyro as Soldier and they don't expect me to pack a shotgun, it's funny to see them prepare to airblast and get the dopamine you get when you reflect a projectile, but be met with a shotgun blast.
I almost exclusively play Soldier using some kind of banner - usually Battalion's. A strategy I usually employ against any pyro I know can airblast is to waste a rocket and bait their airblast - usually either by firing a rocket in their direction (but not near them) or I'll whip my aim straight up and fire a rocket straight into the air to confuse them, then attack while their airblast is on cooldown or sanity is recovering. I'll also sometimes just completely stop moving. Psychological warfare works wonders, folks. Confound your enemy to give yourself the advantage.
Personally im a big fan of corner peeking at random intervals, even if my rocket launcher is empty, ill peek around the corner while reloading and stare at a pyro, peek once (without firing) make him trigger airblast and upon the audio que, rush him with a shove- i mean rocket him. (of course after the first peekaboo, you wanna just immediately shoot him when he respawns so you remain unpredictable.)
It's like how you play spy, u don't disguise and wander around waiting to get attacked (it's not effective), u stay cloacked and get close enough on their/his back and backstab them or when they're distracted. I use Psychological tricks to 'outrun' them (drain the flamethrower ammo), i frequently use a black-box concheror loadout most of the time while playing soldier, everytime i had duel with pyro (from considerably noob to decent player one), i'll be airblast clickbait them by posturing i'll be shooting at them by jumping, faking the shot... and when the airblast is wasted shortly u shot at them quick, but i usually don't do that when the enemy pyro comes with remarkable skills. And in my experience, shotgun was the best tool all along to deal with pyros ngl.
I've countered Pyros with the Liberty Launcher simply by walking forward and shooting between airblasts. They so desperately want that reflect, they forget they can shoot their flamethrower.
One little tip I've noticed for baiting airblasts is just, jumping. So many times I'll see a pyro and then I'll just press the spacebar and they'll airblast like 85% of the time lol
It's all about the bluff when at close range, solly faking when and where they're going to shoot or deliberately wide shotting a rocket, pyro faking whether they're going to reflect or surf, it's actually a really fun fight when both people know what they're doing.
Look, pyro is one of my 3 most mained classes, alongside medic and demo. And once, I reflected a direct hit. Booyah. Oh and also I started playing soldier not so long ago, and well, just as LazyPurple said: “When I see a pyro, I don’t see a class that can reflect rockets, I see a class that can ABSORB rockets.”
a bit late to the party on this, but something you can do to trick pyros is to flick your mouse up slightly, when you fire a rocket the soldier plays an animation where the launcher flies up slightly do to recoil, you can kind of mimic this when you flick your mouse up slightly, it's not fool proof, but it has worked several times for me in the past.
8:25 the direct hit is used and I believe it is useful because the pyros are used to getting a normal speed rocket but the direct hit throws the muscle memory off.
Also if there's a big enough PING difference or it's on a bad server (most likely a community server) the Direct hits rocket can be literally too fast for any pyro to react to.
The one problem for pyros is a rare instance where if they are underwater, they are helpless as you can’t reflect underwater. Not a common problem but you can exploit it on 2fort and Well.
The war between Pyro and Soldier really can boil down to a mind game. Playing soldier as a pyro main gives you a great insight on how to counter them as soldier, and how you can counter them as pyro. I've fought soldiers who wiped the floor with me, they know how the mind game is. Usually when i fight pyros if they're waiting for me to shoot a rocket, i simply dont and say "good work :P", we either jsut go away or decide our fates with a RPS match. I will be honest though. i love sending rockets back to cocky soldiers who think they're the hottest sh*t, specially with the dragon's fury (it's possible, it demands more of your prediction skills tho)
2:19 Classes that counter every class...? Spy doesn't do that, at all. It's sniper, scout (He can still kill the engineer and chip down the sentry), sniper, soldier (I mean, he has a shotgun and otherwise just wrecks everything), sniper, pyro (For obvious reasons. I mean if you don't use bullets, he's practically unstoppab- Aaand there goes the pyro. He's really not that scary, even with airblast.), and sniper. Maybe also Sniper. Kinda just wrecks everything at any range, and a good one that knows how to wreck anything at any range will delete you 2:30 As a pyro main who's probably contributed to several soldier killstreaks on the enemy team... No. I don't. Direct Hit, faking me out, shotgun, melee, and the fact that you can literally aim away from my face and still hit me with splash damage kind of just invalidates a rivalry. It's mostly even when I go up against a competent soldier.
Man this turn out so good, I'm seriously giddy :D

far away ground shots always throw me off when i try to airblast them
I want to hug the shit out of the little ol stock soldier he looks so oblivious and sweet
11:46 i never thought i would hear this song in other youtube videos again in 2022
Good work as always FrannyRocketMan
The tip with the faking a rocket is good but I usually do is flick a rocket shot to bait them or shoot one to their left to push them into the corner then pull out a shotgun usually a PA.
Pyros when soldiers pull out their shotgun: *you weren’t supposed to do that*
The Mario gag was a pain to watch.
The punchline was streched so long and turned it from medicore to agonizing.
Ok
Those sfm clips were pretty good
Just tell a pyro look down at the keyboard. They're small minds will get scrambled into millions of pieces.
Pyro: *gets ready to reflect my rocket*
Me: *people think they can outsmart me.. Maybe. Maybe. But i have yet to find person who can outsmart bullet.*
(pulls out shotgun)
What I sometimes do is quickly flick my mouse straight up into the air right as I fire to force out an air blast and then do the laugh taunt. Makes for some pretty funny moments where the enemy pyro sometimes just sits there and thinks about life
I love the shotgun, I have alot of moments where I fight a Pyro as Soldier and they don't expect me to pack a shotgun, it's funny to see them prepare to airblast and get the dopamine you get when you reflect a projectile, but be met with a shotgun blast.
Took a while to comprehend that this vid was sfm animation through its entire length. Nice
Funny how Megalovania starts right when he talks about how pyros aren't just gonna take it.
I thought everybody knew to just switch to their shotguns when they see us pyro mains
I was playing Soldier with Beggar's Bazooka one day and a Pyro on the enemy team deflected all the rockets I shot at them, which killed me
at the end of the video, i realised it was uploaded yesterday
It's all about the bluff when at close range, solly faking when and where they're going to shoot or deliberately wide shotting a rocket, pyro faking whether they're going to reflect or surf, it's actually a really fun fight when both people know what they're doing.
Look, pyro is one of my 3 most mained classes, alongside medic and demo. And once, I reflected a direct hit. Booyah. Oh and also I started playing soldier not so long ago, and well, just as LazyPurple said: “When I see a pyro, I don’t see a class that can reflect rockets, I see a class that can ABSORB rockets.”
Pyros whenever I do the cheeky "ill wait till you airblast to shoot" strat:
(Their only method of defense against me is now useless)
a bit late to the party on this, but something you can do to trick pyros is to flick your mouse up slightly, when you fire a rocket the soldier plays an animation where the launcher flies up slightly do to recoil, you can kind of mimic this when you flick your mouse up slightly, it's not fool proof, but it has worked several times for me in the past.
As a pyro main i am glad for this video hopefully i can have more challenges on timing reflect
I sure do hate it when an enemy engineer places a sapper on my sentry.
Wait...
You are sleeping on the Dragon's Fury. That thing's DPS is monstrous.
3:55 I feel like should have been a turning around joke there
Always go pyro with no cosmetics, soldiers think you are a noob and seem to forget airblast exists, its so strange and I love it
2:19
Classes that counter every class...?
Spy doesn't do that, at all.
It's sniper, scout (He can still kill the engineer and chip down the sentry), sniper, soldier (I mean, he has a shotgun and otherwise just wrecks everything), sniper, pyro (For obvious reasons. I mean if you don't use bullets, he's practically unstoppab- Aaand there goes the pyro. He's really not that scary, even with airblast.), and sniper.
Maybe also Sniper. Kinda just wrecks everything at any range, and a good one that knows how to wreck anything at any range will delete you
2:30
As a pyro main who's probably contributed to several soldier killstreaks on the enemy team...
No. I don't. Direct Hit, faking me out, shotgun, melee, and the fact that you can literally aim away from my face and still hit me with splash damage kind of just invalidates a rivalry. It's mostly even when I go up against a competent soldier.
I waited 4- no 5,000 years for this!
Best counter for combo pyros is the panic attack especially if they try to go for the axeinguisher combo
pyros will ALWAYS ingage in melee duels if they have a strange, even if its the axtinguisher and you're not on fire
