Sorry to hear that. It does get easier. When I get around to my engraving tutorial, that will have practice tasks for bright cutting. I do show how I sharpen these in the sharpening video, along with my 90 degree scorper.
Andy, thanks for sharing your techniques, I like to see production mode in fabrication. I have a loving suggestion for your new channel: explain why you choose to do something in addition to saying what you're doing. Watching this provokes in my mind, the question: "Why did he choose to do that ?" I understand it, but beginners may want to understand your teaching. Makes for good content. Also, did you know there'd an explainable raising that a "fresh" solder join will melt faster than an older one? Zinc is why we can keep using hard solder, join after join. I've had clients request an inline collettewith the shank designed to connect on either side of the collett to keep the stone height down. I do agree that there's too much shoddy work out there on Etsy and elsewhere. Lots of good work, too! Poor teaching - and learning - reaches every low bar. I want some of your homemade small collett blocks! Oh, to have a machine shop and lathe to make every tool I can't find, but need. I bet you could sell them to our metalsmithing community. Definite sub. 👍🏻
Hi. Thanks for taking the time to comment. As stated, the main reason for this one is because of so many bad versions and that I wanted to show people the easiest way of doing things. I normally do mention things like this on videos. I'm trying to keep away from scripts and let it become more natural and chilled. That way people can take from it what they need to. I'd mentioned before in a video about reasons why to use only hard solder, but don't want to sound like a broken record. 🤣 There's another tool that I make and did think about making and selling. But this other tool takes so long I'd be charging £150 for. But a Chinese firm will discover it and make it for £4 because they're set up for it. I've seen it sadly happen with most of the tools people now see every day, but don't realise it's been copied from a little company. This actual tool though for the collets can even be made with a hand drill for DIY and a diamond cone burr. When this one wears out, I'll make a new one on camera. There's so much more I'd like to do, but I already work 10-12hours most days in my normal studio work. Yeah right. Sadly too many people are self taught from watching youtube tutorials that are 10 minutes long and have 90% of the process cut out. Not all of my videos are tutorials though. I still need to do my fun videos for my own sanity. Not that those videos done well, but I enjoyed making them. Please stay tuned for lots more to come.

It's the talking on camera and the videography that is the challenging bit. I just got so frustrated seeing the advice people were being given on Facebook groups. It was the blind leading the blind. We all started somewhere, but the people giving advice really had no idea and I had to bite my tounge because my Facebook is linked to my personal business page. So thats why I started. It seems to really be helping people, so I'm really pleased, but I am still digging my way through this learning curve in my own strange way. But hints from people are always welcomed and noted. I have thick skin, so anyone can be as blunt as they wish. 🤣 Thanks again.

Ah cool. I'm blunt, but never mean to insult. Just want to help, so pleased you've found bits useful. I did think about a tool list, but I'm hoping people will watch more of the videos and not miss descriptions of tools. It's just that stats show that so many people skip through the vids. It just doesn't help the channel. Thanks for taking the time for feedback. This really does help the channel.
@user-zv5yi5ul9j this very different to normal rube setting selection, where people normally use the tube as it is with straight sides. Very unimaginative version that is all over Facebook. That type is very different for working out measurements. This is easy than it looks. My way of using tube and dimensions is to use 1.5 to 2mm bigger than stone diameter, because I do the squashing thing until it looks a good wall thickness and diameter compared to stone. I like to see a good .6 to .8mm of metal around the stone before setting.
@gilliankemp92 for my 90 degree tungsten graver, I do just buy a square rod of tungsten. All other hss gravers, it's just not worth my time to make from scratch. I don't think I've ever even seen someone do that. My hss are the pre formed ones that need trimming and dressing.

I'm looking forward to the nest one. - Quetion, When you do the Bright Cut around the stones, do you prefer to use a #2 Scorper of a #2 Onglette - I have tried both and I'm still not sure which I like better. Morning Phil. I only use flat scorpers for bright cut on my round stones. I mainly use flat scorpers on straight edges too. I use the knife edge, spit and onglette mainly for cut lines around the grain work and also for cutting between grains. 👍🏼
What is the internal diameter of the tubing...so is there an ideal thickness relative to the stone size? I struggle to push the metal over the stone, and when I do it looks a bit 'etsy'!
I think this tube is about .6mm, but it works out thicker by the time it's compressed. That's why I had to drill out for my stones. I didn't bring my bag home tonight, I'll add to my video list a trouble shooting style stone setting video. I think that would be useful for people. There's about 26 videos on my list currently 😬
@@Uvaronova you can generally get them from all jewellery tool suppliers. In England, I use Walsh tools and Cousins UK. Sutton tools are generally a bit expensive.

Love your videos. Been binging them today/through tonight. If I can say one small suggestion, not about your beautiful craftsmanship obviously, because it's impeccable and needs nothing more than more praise! I also know you've stated many many times that the recording and what not is what is new to you, so my suggestion is about that aspect. Over my viewing I've seen you VERY often multiple times repeat the fact that you will not be be showing XYZ of whatever. You do not need to state that several times throughout. Instead, maybe state in the very beginning what you will and wont be showing and why, to avoid the need to explain over and over again and kinda stumbling about it each time. It detracts from what you ARE actually showing in my opinion. Just my thoughts. This can be applied to any repeated statements you think you'd need to be making throughout the video or anything else you think that would be needed to be said other than only what you are trying to actually be teaching in the video. Anyways. Hope that made sense!! Also, you make it sound as if these easy things are like...not important? Idk how to explain it but you should be proud of ALL these beautiful things you create. Some of us couldnt even dream of making something that you find so easy peasy haha! Okay that all! Thank you again for everything taught it's so amazing!!🎉
