Great video! I went with the R5 for two main reasons that just pushed me from the R6:
- the cropability is important to me. Farthest reach I have is 400mm and I also take macro which cropping is really great to take a 2.5x magnification to a 4 or even 5x!
- the ability to take an 8k video, then pull a 35 megapixel photo from it. This makes super fast things I’m worried about missing become a breeze to capture! Just film it and bam got it!
Thanks Tommy! I'm the same. Being able to crop like crazy, and being able to film in 8K are two of my favorite things about the R5, lol.
I could have sworn I already commented on this, but... this is one of the things that convinced me to get the R6 and put the savings into lenses. I appreciate you pointing out that 20mp is FINE, and was for a long time with DSLR's like the 1Dx and D5. I sometimes feel like the entire internet has forgotten that not only is it possible to do pro work with 20mp, but pros have been doing it for a long time.

Love your videos and this was no exception. Finally received my R5 a month ago. I mostly shoot professional baseball here in AZ, but do a lot of wildlife work as well. Went with the R5 for multiple reasons - 1. Better evf - 5.76 Million v. 3.69 Million Dots; 2. WiFi - 5 Ghz and Bluetooth 5.0 only in R5; 3. Storage - CFexpress card only in R5; 4. Resale value - if Canon comes out with an R1 series next year and the specs are right, many people like myself will be selling their R5's. My guess is that a used R5 will give back a greater return than a used R6. 5. Shutter Actuation Lifespan - 500K for R5 and 300K for R6 - this is a major difference and an aspect of the cameras a lot of people don't consider; and most important factor - 6. 45 mp sensor. Do to Covid and shutting down of baseball -- needed a camera that was suited for landscapes, architecture, and studio work. Plus, do a lot of macro photography and the extra mp makes a huge difference. I for one, didn't mind spending a little more to purchase a camera body with greater versatility. Having a 1Dx Mark II - the images the R5 produce are amazing; especially, with native R glass.
Hey that's awesome Ray! I do agree, if you can afford the R5 then I'd take it just about every time, except astro, where I prefer my R6 (but I'm lucky enough to have both ;).

@@joshuadxlee I think mush is a strong word, lol. The R5 has done very well with high iso and astro stuff for me, just not quite as good as the R6, though still better than anything else I've ever used.

Wow, what a refreshing change! An honest, real life comparison review of the two cameras. I have a 5d IV which I use almost exclusively for wildlife, with a Canon 100-400 mk 2 and a 600 f4. My reasons for looking at mirrorless are the better autofocus and silent shutter. Seriously considering the R6 now. Thanks! 👍🏻

Interesting that you switched from 1dx2, and didn’t go with the mark3 version. I learned a lot from your reasoning on 5R/6R and makes sense. I had the 1dx1 for 3 years then switched to the mk2 when it came out and have 4 L lenses, my most used is the 400/2.8 v2 and often with TC2 attached. I am super happy with shots when I nail the auto focus but technology moves on and now 4 years later, the R5/R6 auto focus tech is a step up. Subbed and look forward to your videos. Great video. I just recently received my R6 and couldn't be happier. I'm an amateur, at best and as much as I "wanted" the R5, I chose the R6 for budget reasons. In regard to the megapixels, I previously shot with both a 6D and 7D MK2. Both are 20mp and I have several large prints that I love. As soon as I got my new camera, I used your settings for wildlife and it has been working great. Thank you!

Great video as usual. I'm currently shooting wildlife as a hobby with the D77 and the Tamron 150-600mm G1. I'm thinking about upgrading my gear sometime near year with a $2000 budget. I also have the Sony A6000 and A7ii. My options are:
1. Sony 200-600mm lens
2. Canon EOS-R with an adapter to use with the Tamron 150-600mm G1
3. Canon EOS-R and the 800mm f/11 RF lens
4. Wait for the rumored Canon APS-C RF body coming out Q2 of next year
What would you recommend?
Idk, I've never used a Sony, so I couldn't say how they feel or compare. I have done a video about the EOS R for wildlife though. As for the lenses, if you're on Canon I would say stick with the 150-600 since it's way more versatile. The 800 is great, but it's got a lot of drawbacks and is pretty limiting. I personally wouldn't want it as a main, or only wildlife lens.

Hi Chris.... I was wondering your views on the r6 and the learning curve from your 70d. I have the 80d and I'm trying to decide between r6 and 5dmk4. Thank you in advance..
I got one of the first R6s delivered to the States and it has been great. I got it because the AF will work with my 100-400 Mark II L with the 2X TC but the low light and high ISO has exceeded expectations.
May I know what’s your experience with that combination? Thank you very much
@@mabbugao It has been excellent. Even though with the 2X TC it is F11, the AF can track birds in flight. I can shoot at 6400-12800 ISO to get the shutter speed up to 1000-2000 and the results are astonishing. Are there flaws? If you pixel peep. It is not a 600mm F4 but this setup is not $12000. I frequently use auto ISO with a max ISO of 25600 and minimum speed of 2000. If I have to crop very much the quality suffers but step one is get the shot. I would share examples but I don't think this platform allows it.
I have the R6 and was undecided whether i needed the R5 (I also crop a lot). Not so sure I do now (money isn't an issue as such. Great video

I’ve really enjoyed your opinion on the two cameras. I’ve been watching countless videos trying to help with the decision of R5 vs R6. Coming from a 5Dmkiii shooting mainly still life and landscape. I was worried it about the image quality and that it might feel like a step down switching to an R6. If I’m being honest with myself, 99.9% of what i shoot ends up on social media and the R5 will potentially be a waste. But I can’t help shake the nagging feeling that if I decide on the R6, I’ll always wished I had purchase the R5. I think I’m leaning towards the R6 and with the money saved, purchase some addition RF glass.
Sounds like the R6 and a lens or 2 would go a lot further for your personal needs. I wouldn't worry about the R6 IQ, it's very good, especially coming from a 5D3. You may always have that nagging feeling about not buying the absolute best of the best. We're conditioned to feel that way with materialism these days, but I can tell you that an R6 and some RF glass is gonna be much better and more fun than just an R5 and no new glass.

thanks for this video i was considering the r5 over a second camera such as r7 but decided to go for r6 and a new r7 but i am struggling to buy one in the uk. I am currently reluctantly conclude to upgrade my 100-400 II for the RF 100-500, in order to do this I am having to sell my ef 70-200 2.8 and sigma 150-600 and rf 600 to afford the very expensive lens, i must admit the 7.1 aperture does put me off. I do believe people get lazy and forget about the atmosphere always get closer. I have in the past used a 300mm lens and got good results.

Great video Brent! I was shooting with the 6DII for wildlife with the 100-400 II. I did a lot of research and settled on a 90D as a wildlife replacement. It has it's limits, but I'm waiting for the R7 and figured it was the best gap fill option. The 90D is a vary capable camera and after a week with it, I'm liking it.
Doubting between 90D, R6 and R5 right now. Was waiting for the R7 as well. But last week I heard Canon most likely cancelled the R7. Do you still like the 90D?

Hi... I looked at your review and previously I told you that I will go on the R6. Agreat Camera... I took very nice pictures wih it. But a opportunity came and I bought a R5 , sold my R6 in a good price. I believe the R5 is a R6 in better.... One point that is important is the size of the picture at the same length.... with my 100-400 Mark II the R5 produces much bigger pictures and that makes the difference..... So thank you again....

Brent, I found your channel about 6 months ago and love your tell it like it is style. I’ve watched most of your videos. This one I’ve watched at least 4 times and I’m finally making the upgrade from a 7D2 and 5D2 combo. I’ve gone back and forth and back and forth. Yes I crop, 2 weeks ago I was getting the R5 and now I find myself looking to get the R6 and then rumored R7 for wildlife photos and using that combo. I shoot small and large birds, landscape, street and portraits. My only worry is that the R6 won’t get me what I need for landscapes. Which is funny because the 5D2 does just fine for me. The thought of having just one body in the R5 for everything just seems weird! Anyway, if you have time. Just your thought please on the R6 for landscape photography and also this R7 (hopefully the mirrorless 7D2 replacement)? Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. Very grateful.
Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words! I use my R6 for landscape all the time. I've printed huge prints from it, delivered 1000's of digital images (both high and low res) to clients, and no one has said said they didn't look high res enough. I've posted 1000s of images from the R6 on social media, and again, not once have I ever had ANYONE say anything about said images looking or being insufficient in any way at all, nor has anyone EVER been able to tell the difference between any of my R5, R6, or even RP images. My point here, as I hope you've surmised by now, is that resolution isn't always important, and just about anything modern is more than enough for most usage these days. The R6 is an amazing camera. About the the R7. I'll tell you what I tell every other person who asks me about it: It doesn't exist. There have been no official announcements or anything concrete on it's planned specs or production; therefore, personally, I don't even want to think about it. Even if Canon does ever decide to make one, it won't be soon enough to matter for your current upgrade desires. My philosophy is to get what you can now and enjoy it until the next thing that you need comes out, because if you just keep waiting, you'll miss out on using what you could get now, and all the potential amazing images you'll make from now until the thing you're waiting on comes out. Also, again personally, even if the R7 were magically here right now, I still wouldn't get one, because I'm no longer interested in crop body cameras. That's just me though. Everyone's needs and styles are different. Hope that helps.

Brent, brilliant video for a 7:00AM kick off. Hit the nail on the head about Want and need...... In relation to wild life only, I really want the r5 (I have the R6) but really need to be able to crop as I can never get close enough.......but you know what is stopping me trading up......? Not the price but the fact I will be trading an SD slot for that other stupidly expensive and unnecessary card format (what’s it called?)!!!!
Just to add a little back story, I ordered both cameras (from Wex I’m in the UK) in September 2020.....still waiting for a delivery date for the R5, can you believe it?! Now I know I can pick up a 2nd hand one on eBay, but whilst waiting I decided to dip into Medium format. Bought an X1DII......oh my god!! What fun, I’m over the megapixel issue now.
Thanks Ken! I feel you tho. I do love cropping, lol. Those CF Express cats are definitely pricey too. But if you're not doing 8K or 4K 120 video, then you really don't need a CF express card. At least not right away, since a fast SD card still does just fine for photos and regular video.

Without doubt the best video i have seen (and i have watched a few) explaining the differences between R5 and R6, i shoot currently with a 7D11 and looking to upgrade and just cant decide which way to jump. I am currently testing Olympus gear specifically the E-M1 Mk111 and that's impressive. Decisions Decisions!!

Thanks for the video. Very through and detailed. I was debating spending the money to upgrade from the 5D4 but every time I shoot with it, I’m reminded of how good of a camera it already is. I love the optical viewfinder as I use it as a spotting scope for wildlife. And it pairs up amazingly with my 400mm F4 do II. The AF system might not match up to the R5/R6 but it’s still pretty good. And I know it like the back of my hand in tight situations. Maybe one of these days I’ll spring for the new stuff but for now I’m planning on saving money and sticking with what I got.
Just for curiosity sake Brett, how much better do you think the AF system is on the R5/R6 than the 5D4?
I'm glad the video helped! The 5D4 with the 400 DO is a really great combo for sure, and if that's what makes you happy then stick with it! Like I said in the video though, I was impressed enough with the AF in the R5 and R6 to sell my 1DX2 and 5D4 and have zero regrets. To me personally, it was a very big upgrade.

Hey Brent I just joined your channel you given me and everyone else tons of good information Im an old schooled photographer love wildlife especially birds. I even have tons of experience in the black n white darkroom. I learned on my dads 4x5 press camera when I was about 14. Have you ever put the camera into crop sensor mode? my canon d300 needs to be replaced served me well. Loved your photographs
Thanks for the kind words Michael, I appreciate it! I have used crop mode sometimes, when the subject was super far away. I feel like it might help the af acquisition a little bit (but that's unconfirmed). The problem I find, for me anyways, is that if I find myself wanting to use crop mode, then I have to ask, is the subject too far away anyway, and is the shot even worth taking, for me personally. Unless it's for identification purposes, then I don't mind.

Super video Brent! I was looking through some YT videos about doing doing wildlife photography using the CanonR6. I photograph mainly birds as I live on the SC coast with lots of migratory birds passing through. I am currently using a Canon 7Dii with the Tamron 150-600 G2. I have gotten to where I love that combination, but feel I have gotten to where I am pretty much getting about the best possible using that combination. I also have a couple of 6Dii's that I do studio work with, but have never tried to shoot birds with it mainly due to the 6.5 fps limitation. From the info I now have from your reviews and my current budget, I am positive I will go with the CanonR6. As the Tamron 150-600 is the only lens I seem to use for the birds, I will probably try using the Tamron 150-600 for the time being. I have a few questions. Are you using the EF version of the G2 on your R6? In the image in the video, I could not see an adaptor between the R6 and the G2. Will I be fine using the G2 with the Canon adaptor with my EF version of the G2 lens? I do realize that I will be losing a lot of effective focal length from the 7Dii to using the R6, but I think I will be happy just being able to have the R6's focusing capabilities. The video put me off thinking about using an extender with that combo, especially for inflight shots. I do also like the fact that I could still use the R6 with all of my other Canon lenses that I have collected over the years. Thanks for any advice you may have. I'll go watch your video about those focusing settings now.
Yeah I had the EF version of the G2, it's only (Canon) mount there is. It works fine with the RF-EF adapter. The R6 is definitely a big upgrade over the 7D2, and I'd take it every time over any camera except the R5.

Hi .I jumped in and bought the R5. Am an amateur bird photographer and traded in the 7D MK2 and I agree with you the R5 is amazing. Low light and focusing, frames per second. Why is it assumed portrait photographers need big mp sensors? I used a Nikon D800 f(36mp sensor), mad I continually need to dumb down the images because all those pixels will capture so much detail as to show every little fault. Add the storage space and editing power and the fact that a 45mp sensor will make technique critical as it will show every tiny mistake you might make. Brilliant and informative video btw.

Great video! You did forget to mention the super expensive cfexpress card that is needed to go along with the video specs of the R5.
That's a great point. $400 and up for a CFExpress card is a big extra expense compared to a UHS II SD.

I didn't forget to mention it though, I actually filmed a whole part about that but took it out since the video was getting really long and I felt that most people watching this particular video would be more photo based. You definitely need the CF Express if you want to do 8K or 4K 120, but other than that, I've had no issue, even in 4K 60p, just using a good, fast, SD card. I am going to make another video about how and why and when I shoot in 8K, and I will talk more about the cards in that one.
Great vid on R5 vs R6. Couple years ago I got tired of the 7DII w/ Tamron 150-600 and switched to Sony a9II w/200-600 (and this spring the a1.) The autofocus of these new Canons and Sonys are the primary reason to upgrade. Good to know in this regard the R6=R5. If the Rs had come out earlier I might of saved some $$$. Still this video's info is very useful as many friends are still Canon users that look to this semi-gearhead for advice.
I decided which one should I buy. I'm hybrid shooter. R6 with 70-200 RF lens because I've old efs prime and wide angle lenses. Don't need to just only for 45mp
Having owned and shot with the 1DXII, 1DXIII, and now the R5, I will never go back to a DSLR and the IQ blows the R6 away. Huge difference - save up and buy the R5...
When the 1DX3 was coming out I really wanted it as an upgrade from my 1DX. The autofocus seemed much better. It sounds like my money would be better spent on the R5. I shoot birds mostly. I just have concerns for what I’m hearing about the animal AF. Have you had success at close range with this? Thanks
I haven't had any af issues with the R5. It's been far superior to my 1DX2 and 5D4.

Thanks Brent. This video was the first I've seen of yours, but I will be subscribing and checking out more of yours. This video was pretty much spot on for the kind of information I was looking for and I did review a couple dozen videos on other channels. I've a good selection of EF lenses and was looking for information related to getting another body after shooting with just one DSLR for the past few years. I was considering just another Canon 5D (in order to not change lenses / cameras so often in the field) but thought I'd see what all the 'new' noise was about with mirrorless. Again, your video was perfect for the information I was looking for, thanks... albeit now it will probably cost me two R bodies rather than one 5D.

I’ve had a lot of cameras from all different brands. The R5/6 are easily my favorite cameras. Canon finally nailed it and will only get better.
The best improvement is the sensors and focusing. Finally don’t need Sony anymore.
Currently have the original 7D. Was contemplating a R5 but it is a little expensive for me so I'm going with the R6. Your review was really helpful, thanks.

Best review I’ve seen yet. I’m wanting to upgrade this year. I think the r-6 will suit my needs 95% of the time. I like shooting landscapes and I’ve started getting into wildlife. I’d like to see a side by side of very similar photographs in a large print between the two.
For me $2500 is a lot of money to spend on a body. I would spend it but I really would hate to regret it. I think in the back of my mind I would always regret it or at least always wonder what I’m missing out on. I wish they would have upped the sensor and downgraded the video capability to keep a similar if not cheaper price point. For me, I’m buying a camera for the photography and rarely shoot any video. I’m going to wait a bit to see what canon comes up with for the r update.
Yeah, there seems to still be a large number of people out there with that min frame, just wanting more of a stills body. In this case though, I think the price, even for just using it for stills, is pretty solid (at least for me). The R6 is a big upgrade, in just the stills features, over the 5D4, which is what I was using before, and I'd take the lower mp of the R6 over the 5D4 any day because of the AF system along, as well as a bunch of other nice features I've come to really enjoy on the mirrorless platform.

Well I've never used the Sony, so I couldn't comment on that, but between the canons I'd definitely go R6, especially now that it's getting the car af mode update here in a couple days.

Yes, you will need the adapter, and no it does not impact image quality or performance in any way.
If i could have watching this video first, i would not have had to watch all the other ones ive watched. Read many of the comments below and i feel similarly. I shoot wildlife as a Canon “enthusiast.” I use the 90d with the Canon 100-400 mii. I do crop in some cases the the sensor helps. Sometimes i use the 1.4 ext. did you say the rf-ef adapter with the extender was bad? All Canon gear?

Yeah, I try to read and reply to every legit or meaningful comment on my channel. So I did use an adapter, but it wasn't the Canon one, it was the Tamron 1.4x TC, and I only used it on the Tamron 150-600 G2, and I mentioned that it wasn't a great experience. I actually made another long video about the RF800 compared to the Tamron 150-600 G2 and that's where I used the TC. In that case the Tamron with the 1.4x just didn't perform consistently well enough for me to be able to rely on it in a professional shoot. I felt it did well enough for a normal day out, but just not something I would rely on for a paying gig. The Canon 1.4x TC, on good Canon glass has always worked well for me and I have no issues other than on the RF system, you're adding more size and weight with the TC and the RF-EF adapter on there, which the cameras can handle just fine, it's just something I made a note of when using a TC with an EF mounted lens on the RF system. I have not tried the RF TC yet, but I will soon, hopefully.
@@BrentHall thank you. One more thing is that when you use the 1.4 extender on say the canon 100 -400, you lose focus in points. But I am told that when you put it on in r6 or in
R5 you don’t lose any focusing points as basically the whole class is focusing points.
@@mobelue Yep, the R5 and R6 will retain all the focus points with the 100-400 and the 1.4x TC.

How about viewfinder Lag ? Tony and Chelsea said in one video that it was fine until you starting taking pictures, then It was really bad for closer up fast birds in flight. What safest thou ?

Awesome detailed video! I’m shooting w my 1DX3 which I recently upgraded from the ii & I absolutely ❤️! I’m looking for a second back up body but more importantly to leave a second lens on while shooting sports & other action such as wildlife. I currently have a 50 1.2, 24-70 2.8ii, 70-200 2.8ii & 300 2.8ii. I’m leaning towards a mirrorless rather than a current DSLR to begin to phase into the new technology & thinking about the R6 over the R5. Mainly due to price but i mostly shoot events where low light capability is huge for me so the R6 would be more practical. What do u think the best option for me would be for a back up/2nd body to the 1DX3???? Plus I’m not liking to upgrade any of my lenses for now so will have to get the standard $99 adapter for my EF lenses. Thanks in advance!

I have a point, I think, that no TH-camr has talked about: the use of those 2 cameras when battery falls below 70 or 50%. What about the fps and the AF performance ? Because in the manual of the r5, the drop in FPS is quite scary 12 to 5 I think to remember when battery falls, for a 4000e camera I think it is unacceptable.. Did you use the R5 or R6 is these conditions ? Is the electronic shutter still working at 20 FPS whith low battery ?

Yeah, I actually filmed a whole other section about battery life and about that very thing, but the video got so long that I cut it out. I have actually mentioned that in other videos though. I made a video about third party batteries and talked a bit about the fps loss when dropping below 70% battery life.
Really well done video but I would like to ask you if you went straight to the R5 /R6 after using the 1DX Mk 2 or have you used a 1DX 3 and if you have, what were/ are your overall impressions of the Mk 3 ?
No, I never tried the 1DX3. I almost bought it when it came out, but I went for the R5 and R6 instead. At this point, for me personally, there's no way I'd take it over the R5.
@@BrentHall I have a 1DX2 and eventually selling it to help finance the change to the R5. My 1DX 3 is a fantastic DSLR but it’s my last one. The many similarities between it and the R5 and the superior resolution make it the right choice. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks Brent, some useful thoughts there. I was wondering what the battery life is like and if there is much difference between the R5 and R6. I frequently photograph mountain hares in the snow and I'm worried about how much power the EVF consumes just watching an animal for long periods in the cold. Thanks.
well this is getting a bit ridiculous now, lol. I actually filmed a whole section about battery life, but took it out because the video was getting way too long...and now everyone seems to be asking about battery life, lol. I did talk a lot about battery life in my video about 3rd party accessories for the R5 and R6. From my experience with them so far, the battery life has been a bit worse than with my 5D4, even with the R5/R6 having the newer battery. The fact that you have the EVF and the higher speed burst modes just takes more juice, but that's to be expected. Having said that, I think it's still pretty good for me personally. I did buy extra batteries though, and always keep at least 2 extra in my pocket when out for wildlife photography.

That's awesome! Good lenses are always a solid choice. And yes, it's a custom strat I got right before I left for the navy in 2003 and took with me on the carriers and helicopters. It's been through a lot, lol.

Its was good, but now with the R6 and the 100-500mm L lens its what I always wanted. I have the sigma full frame lenses( sigma 150-600mm contemporary and the sigma 70-200 2.8 non art lens)for the r6 . Do you think the r6 would work great with the r6? I am trying to decide between thr r6 and 5dmk4. I watch alot alot of your views for tips and tricks. Also to let you in my world. I mostly shot small , large birds and smaller wildlife critters. hi brent, im in uk and i live in brent lol, matches your name, 1 question, i have EF and EFS lenses, im thinking R6 OR Most likely R5, do both lens work well on eos r5 and r6, with adapter, any cropping on either ef or efs lenses, example i have ef 24mm f/1.4l ii usm, and efs 17-55mm f/2.8, will it be same focal lens 24mm and 17-55mm respectively, ?
Nice! I'll have to go check that town out when I go back there, maybe this summer (fingers crossed). The ef lenses will work fine on the R5 and R6, but the efs, not so much.

I am seriously considering getting the Z6ii but watching your R6/R5 videos have been steering me towards Canon. Looking to get into wildlife photography with my colleague who has a D850, I love the white lens and color of Canon but Nikon pricing just seems better, your thoughts?
Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words! I definitely talk a lot, lol. I haven't used Nikon since I was in the Navy in the early 2000s, but I've met a few wildlife photographers who still really love their D850s. I don't know anyone who uses the new Z mirrorless cameras for wildlife though, so I couldn't really comment on that.
I don't miss that huge temperature swing between day and night that New Mexico has. But then again the humidity in the summer here in Arkansas is intense sometimes 🥵.
Yeah, the temp swings can be crazy for sure, but I definitely don't miss all the humidity from back east! :)
