Radiohead was so good, so they've made radiohead 2
Was!?
Radiohead... 4? There's Atoms for Peace, Thom Yorke's solo stuff and now The Smile. They all sound pretty similar for the most part.
Wtf Depression The Sequel
@Andrew Peterson Nigel was in Atoms for Piece. I'd consider him from Radiohead
this is radiohead for non virgins
Makes me happy knowing these legends are still making music.
I can’t wait for the album
Right!? Still so god damn amazing after all these years and even relevant, ha.
It gives me the smile
Music th-cam.com/video/WK4bBYbmrdM/w-d-xo.html
And getting better every time they come out with whatever project...Thom Yorke is a musical god!
Ah, the happy version of National Anthem I never knew I needed
OMG
Weird, "happy" isn't the word I'd use at all.
@@gorgolyt more like funky
Producers: how much bass do you want on this?
Thom and Jonny: yes
Yeah seriously, I can't even hear the bass, its so muddled. Idk whats up with the production for the bass. The rest tho, perfection.
its waaaaaaaaaaaay to much its fucking my ears and its killing the beauty of that bass line and also killing thoms voice im so disappointed now :(
@@MM-vs2et you don’t sound as cool as you think you do, just enjoy the music and stop nitpicking
@@yaggayaggaya9918 wtf are you even on about lmao, sound as cool as i think? That was a valid concern, that arose out of an obvious issue.
never enough bass
This song is like having a perfect dream that you never want to wake up from. Nothing short of brilliant.
.
really ? 🧿
Headphones, lights out, close your eyes in front of the monitor. It's magic.
Love how the bassline repeats in that unpredictable out-of-sync way. These guys are musos musos. Incredible production too
That bassline is disgusting dude, goddamn that shit is funky
Nigel always gets it DONE
@@Tuteins Oh thanks for the info, I didn’t look at the description. Wikipedia said Nigel was the producer for The Smile
bassline has been stuck in my head all week
@@Tuteins pretty sure that's who produced the video
Thom and Johnny are beyond any doubt in their capability to continue producing mind-blowing stuff. And in the face of this great new piece, I want to truly acknowledge Tom Skinner and this totally relaxed drumming style.
Tom Skinner is awesome. Check out "A Hairdryer", previously known as "Blue Eyed Fox" that's my favourite Smile song.
Totally agree! There were so many great drum moments during the gig last Sunday. I am flashed!
Word. The drumming is so slick and nonchalant.
@@ernestovidales09 You weren't lying! I just listened to the album... his work on A Hairdryer gave me chills.
afrobeat
Just in case there are any music theory geeks in here (I'm sure there are) the polymeter verse groove is:
- 3 x 4/4 beat pattern = 12 beats (24 1/8 notes)
- 8 x 7/8 beat pattern = 28 beats (56 1/8 notes)
Total: 12 + 28 = 40 beats = 10 bars.
So the drums just play a 4/4 beat for 10 bars, and in that time, the 4/4 and 7/8 polymeter riff perfectly lines up again. Very clever..!
Regardless of whether they thought about it mathematically when writing it, it's still interesting to understand what's actually happening, and how it works.
Love this kind of discussion/debate after a new Yorke/Greenwood track drops! Thanks for sharing! I actually think there is a bar of 6/8 in the guitar riff...but either way the math adds up. The full 10 bar guitar cycle (to my ear) is:
4 x 4/4
2 x 7/8 (3+2+2)
1 x 6/8
1x 4/4
2x 7/8
1x 6/8
Total: 80 8th notes or 10 bars of 4/4 (which the drums are playing as you pointed out.) Either way still lines up with your math!
Side note: In the chorus, I hear a kind of hemiola going on. Yorke sings 3 x 5/8 patterns starting on the 2nd 8th note of the bar (15 eight notes + 1 8th rest= 16 eights total) over two bars (i.e. 16 8th notes.)
Fun Fun!
Also, they likely won’t be playing this song live 😂😂
Tony Allen (batterista) Rest in Peace
@@hiimty8540 ehm yeah they do, all the time lol. i've seen them do it.
es una forma de verlo, no la única. un abrazo, igualmente.
google translator: It's one way of looking at it, not the only one. A hug, too.
This song is absolutely killer
I agree
Eh
@@brianlaudrupchannel elaborate
@@darr915 starts good and then you realise it's one of them looping repetitive radiohead songs that goes no where. Could be on the king of limbs
@@brianlaudrupchannel i do agree that it's repetitive, but I don't think it's as static or as underdeveloped as the songs on the king of limbs. I do think that most of the songs on the king of limbs are actually too overcomplicated, which is the opposite of this song, since it's pretty simplistic. I don't think repetitiveness in itself is a bad thing; it can be satisfyingly hypnotic in my opinion. For sure, this song isn't their greatest work, but I think it's still pretty good. I guess it kind of reminds me of Scatterbrain, very simplistic and repeating beat.
Lovin the horns - Johnny’s fingerprints all over that section
facts
Johnny is really probably one of the most critical members when it comes to his extensive knowledge and playing skills.
Thom’s bassline really reminds me of Laura Lee of Khruangbin’s style here. Amazing!

@@Skyppz You're right! Thank you!
When I first heard this song in the Glastonbury set last year, my first thought was that this sounds like a song Khruangbin wished they'd written
Ha! First thing I thought and there's your comment ☺️
@@MM-vs2et I also think how the vocals and guitar line up in The Opposite is very Khruangbin-esque.

In my eyes
@@OkaySoShit i kinda like the video tho, its showing the lyrics of the song one letter at a time
They went from Icons to Legends to Gods at this point…imagine still making Masterpieces in your 50s
That Brass Section is awesome. Reminds me of those on TKOL
I hear some woodwinds in there too 👌
I wasn't sure I would like The Smile. After hearing this, I can't wait to hear more! Never doubt Thom !
And my boy Jonny 🙂🔪
Or Tom!
Or jonny
This pretty much confirms the theory that Jonny and Thom together are why Radiohead sounds like Radiohead. Those two together and it will always be fine, no matter what name it's under or who they collaborate with.
@@Alex_Mac_ idk they don't sound like Radiohead for me, there's something from pablo honey for sure, but ofc it's more punky then whole Radiohead discography
This is the weirdest riff I think I’ve ever heard. It goes out of sync then goes right back in without changing tempo. I love it. Makes my head feel weird.
The riff is mostly in 4/4 but also suddenly changes to two measures of 7/4 and one of 6/4, drums keep playing the same 4/4 pattern though. Pretty cool.
Thom + horns is a killer combo
Horns? I did not understand

This is awesome!!! Another successful Thom/Johnny project...
Damn. How good can you get, dudes?!?
The phrasing in "We should give ourselves another chance" is so beautiful!
I love this!! Reminds me of Talk Show Host and other The Bends era stuff, but with a modern twist
it reminds me of the national anthem, and also talk show host

Yeah, it sounds like the snare has a bounce
It has a bloom, I think. It's dreamy as all heck.
I love how Radiohead and Thom and Jonny have always built the bands sound around texture and would create such an atmosphere with stuff like classical/jazz and techno and rhythm. They never had your traditional guitar riffs like a Led Zeppelin or three chord kind of rock song. That’s why they’re one of the best
This groove makes me want to dance like Thom Yorke
So many years, so many songs, so much they given us and still creating the most beautiful compositions. Nothing has ever or will ever compare to these talented and passionate geniuses. Thank you for touring in the U.S.!!

Pop is dead? Lol but yeah Thom hasn’t missed in like 3 decades
That chorus is the most chill-sounding thing I’ve ever heard

Love the fact that the genius that is Tom Skinner is being overlooked in these comments. Sure he operates in far more underground sphere but from Sons Of Kemet to Wildflower etc and his solo project Hello Skinny one of the most creative and consistent UK artists of the last decade, don't get me wrong Thom and Jonny are great but rest assured Tom Skinner isn't just along for the ride
You mean you hate he’s being overlooked?
@@jacksonwaldon not really hate, and 'love the fact can be used as an Ironic kind of term'. Am just surprised that there is so little knowledge of Tom Skinner, and the obviously incorrect assumption that it's Thom and Jonny's work. Obviously most on here will be Radiohead fans, as they are massive, whereas Tom is definitely more underground, just hope they at least go and seek out Tom's work elsewhere and he gains some more fans.
It's got an almost Stone Roses / Fool's Gold vibe to it
This sounds like a song that would be used as a backing track to setting up a robbery in a heist movie
This pairs really well with 'Fools Gold'. Great riff.
Can't believe how much I shrugged off this one on first listen. This is like a slightly proggier In Rainbows track with a bit of Talking Heads thrown in for some spice, absolutely love it.

There was also Thom Yorke on his solo tours. Then was Atoms of Peace...with Flea on bass from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Plus Thom did a few DJ music songs years ago. Plus been separate acous6 with Johnny Greenwood, also from Radiohead. All the talkshows and TheBasement Live DVd years ago. Now this group,The Smile..with Thom and Johnny. Always evolving and changing music and albums solo and groups since the 90s. Been following Thom since the beginning. .My son saw him live years ago in Chicago. Was amazing.
The enigma continues
I remember when I first got into Radiohead there were only certain songs that I would jam out to. Some of my older friends at the time advised me to do an album run through in order from Pablo Honey until King of limbs at the time. I was always hesitant because I didn’t want to ruin my liking for Radiohead by discovering that they have a large array of shitty tracks, but once I did listen to the albums I realized that Radiohead were actually my favorite band in the world. When I heard of The Smile, I felt the same feeling I felt over 10 years ago. And I’m just glad I finally listened to this because it reminds me that Radiohead has been my favorite band for all of this decade. 🔥
Radiohead is one of my favourite bands of all time too.. Their new album The Smile confirm this
Loving the new music but tbh I'm just excited to see the album cover and aesthetic that'll go along with these minimalist experimental rock songs
OMG! I love this song so much. There is a lot of Sons of Kemet sound on this one that previous release doesn't have. The bass reminds me a lot of Atoms for Peace project.
Thom Yorke never fails to deliver quality tunes, the bass line reminds me a bit of the last 5 minutes of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells
