Hello I have autism and this felt really close to home, it summed up my life experience in one song. I have felt like an observer for so long. Like a tree, just background noise. And the world goes so fast and intensely around me, I can’t keep up. I stand still.

How beuatifully put! There is great merit in standing still in all this madness. All that rushing around can be a waste of energy, leading nowhere but possibly with undesirable consequences.

I find myself unable to stop thinking about that closing moment when the final version of Thom arrives at the bar and "sees" the other versions of himself who are almost pantomiming his different daily emotions and moods. He's looking at them like they are different people even as he recognizes them. But the most telling glance is at the final figure, the one who is hollow, see-through and disappearing: a man who doesn't belong in this world and who does not know how to find peace and contentment in his existence. He imagines going through the motions all over again, dreading that he won't find a way to simply live happily. It's a grim sight to behold. The pain and ultimate resignation in his eyes is absolutely devastating. Our lives finally amount to little more than "grains of sand slipping through our hands".

The first time I heard Thom Yorke sing was a song called "No Surprises" on a friend's music player.
There wasn't as much artist information on the internet as there is today.
Time passed and I watched a film called "Vanilla Sky", which was an adaptation of "Abra los Ojos".
In that film, "Everything in its right place" played. From then on I knew that Radiohead was a different band and that it would definitely be part of my life. I listened to all the albums, and I'm a big fan of Thom Yorke.

I think with The Smile they don't labor over these tunes. They flesh them out and record them. Thom and the guys have spoken about with each Radiohead record they suffer under the labor making something perfect. They are perfectionists and The Smile I think is way to knock out tunes as a three pieces with little fuss over instrumentation due to there only three members. Plus, touring is a bit easier and potentially more profitable playing smaller venues. Radiohead is a machine and touring is a large undertaking, playing much larger venues.

The chord progression is very open and wandering (without a conventional cadence or resolution), which creates an interesting atmosphere. Wow. Very well put. That sense of alienation whilst in a crowd, the inner dialogue when we can't find a way to fit into a space full of people and fully partake in it. It blows my mind that they collaborate with Paul Thomas Anderson, because only a true master of film like him could have expressed what you're describing so well. With this and Daydreaming it's a profound collaboration of music and visuals unlike any I've ever seen.

@@MrTagoe-xw8yg I see a lot of that reflected lyrically, but in the music video it fills me with this keen and specific sensation like he's getting overwhelmed by those feelings and notions while being so utterly oversaturated in human contact and unable to just fully focus on the singular feeling of the thoughts now overtaking him, providing an even sharper juxtaposition between the outer-body feelings invoked by a particularly heavy wave of something like imposter syndrome.
There's almost tranquility and macabre acceptance I see reflected in it, like realizing you're starving at the same time you're drowning.
purely my own initial takeaway from things, but man regardless of the specific intent behind it may have been, it sure as fuck is objectively poignant.

    • @nanakoyuki3083
      @nanakoyuki3083 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I feel similar. I also think that there is certain feeling of it being kind of forced on the lyrical subject. Like apart from all this discomfort and sick thoughts there is no way to escape from them. I just started to work 1,500 km away from my family to let them live normally, and pay off debt. The feeling of alienation and almost derealization I'm getting from being half of the time among people that use a language I do not know, and half among strangers that came from my country but are substantially different from me, it really weighs down on a human. I really connect with this song personally, one of those few good songs that you feel rather than hear.

HansDelli, I can't quite remember the city but I think its the dead city of Nineveh (maybe Sumer). If you look further, in its walls are engravings of the people that lived their with hollowed eyes with some painted black and white. This video is a reference to that city and their song "How to Disappear Completely". That's what this city, or at least its people did; the only person in this entire video alive is Thom's character and everything else is a (Mal-adaptive) daydream. Thom's point is for us to figure out why.

Mi ha emozionato tutto: il video, la voce, il tessuto sonoro... signori, qui bisogna solo inchinarsi alla pura genialità.

    ⤵️ What do you think?
Down a peg or two, you all go
    Behind a wall of eyes
    Your own device
    Is that still you?
    With their hollow eyes
    Tears to black and white
    Strap yourself in
(I try, but it don't go away)
I try, but it don't go away
I try, but it don't go away
    Let us raise our glasses
    To what we don't deserve
O what we're not worthy of
    So rich and white
    To the grains of sand
    Slipping through our hands
I try, but it don't go away
I try, but it don't go away
I try, but it don't go away
    Is that still you?
    Through hollow eyes
    Tears to black and white
    So strap yourself in

I love the percussion and strumming. Close and dry, with those distant electronics in the background. Lovely! Not quite sure of the melody yet though

I can’t stop watching this and it just keeps getting better and better. Feels like a a film from the silent era and those tiny explosions of color remind me of Punch-Drunk Love PTA! Both music and video are gems! ❤

Thoms one of the rare artist that gets better and better; more refined; more confident; He’s changed music; all of these textures that we accept as normal were nowhere in the popular culture radar till Kid A. That ballsy LP; sounds like the foundation now; made all of this possible. Bless this Group of Artists that won’t stop growing and blessing us with gifts. This songs an instant classic; a Treasure. Thank you Gents
