Always nice to see Ys games get coverage. It definitely feels like Ys is the best series I play that almost no one I know talks about. Gotta say I was blown away to see something Ys related pop up on DF and I’m all here for it.
It might be the boomer gamer in me, but I'm so glad that Nihon Falcom is still making games, especially the Ys series. I look forward to the western PC release. It's gonna be a painful wait.
@motorcitydan I spent the whole weekend on the game and I think I love it? It's kind of odd. I loved the characters of Ys IX, but since you really only have Adol and Karja as playable characters, the rest of the cast kind of feels ho-hum personally. With Ys IX, you had interesting themes or struggles with White Cat, Raging Bull, and Hawk. With Ys X, most of the characters are just teens trying to figure out what they wanna do with themselves, which is endearing, but I find myself preferring IX in that regard. I think that was a design choice so they could focus more on "Let's go on an adventure of discovery!" Kind of feel. Gameplay feels solid, and the ship customization, travel, combat, and general exploration in particular is more fun than I thought it would be, and base-raiding takes the place of Monstrum Nox and Dino raids from VIII and IX. It feels like a mix between Wind Waker and AC4 if that makes sense? The duo combat system is fun, and there's a lot higher emphasis on perfect dodges, blocks, and counter hits, which I love. Visually and musically, I love it. Balduq was a nice city, but being an island boy myself, I love exploring bright blue seas, islands, etc., and the very first area's musical theme is a great experience opener. There are some great tracks, but imo some aren't as inspiring. Overall, I'm loving it, but I don't know if it's my favorite just yet. It's up there though!
Its nice to see Falcom games getting more recognition in the past few years. I hope John will also cover Trails through Daybreak when its released globally this summer.
I got talked into starting the Kiseki series a couple of years ago despite the length and started by bouncing around between Sky and the Crossbell games. I almost gave up on Sky a couple of times because of the glacial pacing of FC. Then I started Cold Steel a month ago and blitzed through it. It finally clicked. I understand why people love this series so much now. Falcom are great devs that know how to leverage their strengths (writing, basically) whilst keeping costs down and somehow releasing a new game every year.
@@agromchung Just a heads up before you'll continue with Cold Steel: you'll really want to finish Crossbell games before playing CS3 (even CS2 has parts that expect the player to have played the Crossbell games). The Sky trilogy is also relevant to both the Crossbell duology and the latter two Cold Steel games.

I remember back in the early 90s getting a turbografx 16 CD and my first game being Ys I & II. I remember being blown away at the opening of the game with the amazing cd music and the quality of the narrator's voice acting, not only that but the amazing game cover. My little brain couldn't even comprehend since I was playing NES prior to that. So happy DF is reviewing this game so more people get to know about Falcom and their amazing history.

Well, finally some Falcom love! Let's see the same with the Trails series, guys
The release of the English version of Trails Through Daybreak in the middle of this year will be a good opportunity for DF to look at the Trails series.
@@jtruque -AFAIK Falcom hasn't said anything regarding new re-releases of Trails in the Sky in Japan or otherwise.- With that being said the Sky games are available in English on PC (Steam and GOG). Even if you just have a weak laptop you should still be able to play them just fine due to how old those games are. You can even configure them to work with a PS4/PS5 controller. Edit: After seeing the comment below I looked into this and apparently Falcom is considering its options regarding a Sky re-release. With that being said it's worth keeping in mind that an English re-release of Sky will run into the issue of Trails publishing rights being split between XSEED who localized the Sky trilogy as well as the first two Cold Steel games and NISA who is the current publisher of Falcom games in the west.
They actually announced that they plan to re-release it in the future at the shareholder meeting in December. It’s just not their first priority atm, they don’t have the resources right now.
I played ys 8 the last year and I was atonished by the the quality of the story and gameplay. Now I am playing ys 9 and really excited for ys 10. Seeing videos like this about games that sometimes aren't recognize by many people is really great.
Don't skip Celceta. It was a port from the vita so the graphics aren't that great, but it has the same great gameplay and music. I found it also had that great sense of exploration that 8 had but that 9 was missing due to the location of the game.
I love you John/Digital Foundry, especially when you dive deep into the culture/history/art of games ; how they evolved and what makes them. Makes me wanna play the other titles in the series. 😁
13:23 Thank you so much for highlighting the log system in this game! This might be the thing that gets me to get it now instead of waiting. Game Gengo highlights this in his videos all the time, which is super helpful, so I'm glad you took the time to mention it as well!
@@jishan6992 By knowing Japanese. As John suggested, being decent at Japanese is kind of necessary, with the log feature allowing for looking back on words to look them up as needed.
In 1990 I worked all summer mowing lawns to save for for the TG-16 CD Add on. Let's just say my 13 year old self had his mind blown! Red book audio, stunning cut scenes, amazing music, great story and killer voice acting delivered an epic adventure that I have never forgotten! It makes me so happy that Falcom is still around and successful after 40 years making games! They are a treasure in my opinion!
I was part of the massive swath of folks that didn't have a TG-16 growing up, and it wasn't until I heard online "whispers" of the best traditional 2D side-scrolling Castlevania was on the system that I had to find a way to emulate it. Years later, I was introduced to Ys through Ys VIII. I went back the next year to play through all the games available in the series. While playing Ys 1 and 2, I kept thinking "my mind would have been BLOWN if I had played this back during its original release". The west really slept on this series.
I am all for this kind of content. It's exactly like you said, it's kind of a relic of the past to have those import game columns and things like that. I would love to see you flex your Japanese more and cover games like this that haven't quite made it over the pond yet!
I bought the game last November, and since I can understand Japanese to a good degree, I didn't miss out on the story. To me, this is the best out of the available Ys games on the Switch (8, 9, 10, Origin, Oath in Felgana). Much better performance, perfected combat mechanics, much better character progression, exploration is a mix between Wind Waker and Ys VIII, the story is amazing, with great characters (Karja
I absolutely love the Ys series. I recently just played through the TG-16 versions of Ys 1 through 4. And man that fan translation of Ys 4 is pure fire! Such an amazing game.
There needs to be more attention to games outside the US. I remember reading magazines in the 90s that would always show off what Japan was doing that we would end up never getting. Just because it doesn't leave Japan doesn't mean it doesn't deserve recognition.
I hope Digital Foundry covers one of the Falcoms PC ports at some point. They need the attention. They went from fixing Fromsoftwares garbage Dark Souls port to making proper offical pc ports
Glad to hear John is such a big fan of Dawn of Ys. it's really all the best of I & II combined and pushed to its limit along with some truly incredible music and visuals for its system.
DF covering the greatest genre known to humankind made by some of the greatest masters of it in the entire industry. That’s right. JRPGS and Nihon Falcom baby 🙌
I would love to hear John's opinion on the eventual PC port, whenever it releases. PH3 have been doing a great job with Falcom PC ports in recent years.
John, I love your comment about this being a throwback to import coverage in magazines like Gamefan or EGM. Excited to try this game when it comes west, it’ll be my first in the series.
The Ys games on the PC Engine CD-ROM are really something else. Even if you think you've played the first Ys games on other systems, you have missed out if you haven't played the PC Engine CD-ROM versions. Compozilla's arrangement of the soundtracks are absolutely mesmerizing. The same goes for the other Falcom games on the system; The Legend of Heroes 1 and 2. Falcom and Hudson were a match made in heaven.
Falcom games have some of the best soundtracks anywhere. The London Symphony Orchestra album from the early 90s is top tier. "Josephine" is an incredible Violin and Cello concerto that can rival even the best classical has to offer along with "Lilia Suite".
BLESS YOU for making this video. Sorry I waited until now. Hope it blows up this month. I SO appreciate you as a YS fan LOVING the new one! I was worried it would disappoint from the heights of 8 and 9. This means I'm in for such a treat. I have very strong feelings about why I love 8 and why 9 was an amazing follow up for me (even if the fans may disagree). Floored for this month Metaphor and YS X NORDICS!!! Also, STEAM version for so many is a blessing to be part of the localized launch!
Ys and Trails is right up there in qualiy with the Personas and Xenoblades that get way more coverage in the West. Falcom in general has been getting very popular the last few years Thanks for covering, media outlets need to catch up on being more in-tune that people like japanese games outside of them being published by Nintendo or Square. Feels like a lot of outlets are still stuck in the "anime is for kids/weirdos" mindset of the 80s and 90s
Definitely gonna get this on playasia now that I hear its already been out in japan. The fact that it runs on the new in-house engine falcom made is awesome, especially since they used it a little bit in trails into reverie and trails through daybreak 1 and 2. Gonna get this game after granblue fantasy relink.
I'm more of a Trails fan, (Cold Steel 1 was the first jrpg i bought) but i can't wait when this releases on pc. I'm fairly new to jrpgs, i only started playing it in 2021, but i quite enjoy these games.
To be honest, both versions of the Ys 1 main theme are bangers. Although, I am sorely "late to the party" as my first Ys game is actually Ys 9: Monstrum. I do plan on getting Ys X: Nordic when it comes to the U.S. Ys is a series that feels very old school. They all feel very classic. Even with the Trails series.
Really nice to see a video on this. Ys games are to me the definition of great and cozy fun, really looking forward to the eventual PC port and Western localization, we've been getting some really incredible ports over here and Ys X looks so smooth and nicely animated. And that music, oh yeah, hopefully we get news this 2024.
A trailer for Ys X came out a couple days ago announcing a western release for this game in Fall this year, and a Steam page also opened up for the game, so we will probably get a PC port in fall as well. I am really looking forward to this game, it's looking really cool. Ys as a franchise has never gotten its own "Persona 5" as in a release that really put that franchise on the map in the west. I'm hoping something like that will happen to Ys as well because it really deserves it.
I'm glad to see that DF loves Ys too! There is no bad Ys game, one of my favorite franchises that I recommend to everyone! Happy with the new engine and new mechanics, but honestly, the game should run better on PS4.
No one probably knows what I'm talking about, but the strange thing about the 1990 Ys Book I&II on the TG-16 CD system is that even though it was made with the expectation for 4:3 aspect ratio, it feels like it was originally meant for 16:9 and the screen looks smooshed on 4:3. I never have seen anyone talk about this. If you bring the aspect to 16:9 it looks more "normal."
Awesome to see some Ys love! The new engine does look pretty nice indeed, especially in Trails through Daybreak. Can't wait for the western release, hopefully it will have a day one PC version. The PC ports of Durante's team are always stellar. First of all Ys games are a lot of fun, it's one of my favourite series.
I picked up Ys 8 a few years ago on a whim and was hit by what a breath of fresh air it was. I'm nearing the end of Ys 9 now and I think I gotta hop on board for 10. Each game feels distinct and tries to do something interesting with its choice of single major location.
You should try Ys SEVEN, it was the first one in full 3D and where toy played as a party of 3 characters. It was built for the PSP, but there's also a PC port.
I appreciate your highlighting of the log system for fellow Japanese learners-actually I was beginning to wonder how difficult it was on that front juuust when you decided to mention it, so great timing! It looks like there is no furigana, and my guess is that there might be some rare vocabulary in there due to this being a fantasy game, but an extensive log with no line limit* is pretty great! (*the log in Trails in the Sky FC does not let you play back audio from before your most recent load, for example, turned the patch mod back on for that one)
Thanks for covering this John, it's possibly my most-anticipated game for 2024. Though I would disagree that Ys 8 or 9 feel "stiff" in terms of character movement.
i first got into ys on the master system. i loved the hell out of that game. played the complete edtion on the pc and loved that as well. this series alone is just legendary.
It's always nice to see mainstream AAA games being covered in this channel but with Ys being the subject on this video, I really hope more and more niche games will be getting reviewed on this channel more often
Man alive this comment section!! 😂 I personally enjoyed this video not knowing an awful lot about the Y's series. Reminded me of an old Super Play article, which is never a bad thing!
Absolutely thrilled to see this game get reviewed here and hopefully the series gets more exposure and more fans so we can see global releases again in the future. 😊
to this day the Ys I & II OST is my favorite game music of all time. The first intro song "Feena" is so good, the perfect song to play during the narrators explanation of the game world and story.
Thank you for also taking a look at the PS4 Pro version for us people who don't own a PS5 yet :) I hope they release this version over here too. Might also be a candidate for getting an update for the Switch successor maybe?
Ys is one of my favorite series of all time in no small part because of the music, I even liked IX's music quite a bit more than VIII's (sacrilege, I know). The only console I have is a Meta Quest 2 so I'll most likely be "waiting after the wait" for the console localization until we get the PC port of that.
So glad to see Falcom love on this channel , I'm happy to know that the Switch port is perfectly playable, I may get it for PC but if timing is right I could wait to play it on Switch 2.
I played through Ys VIII on Switch when it came out in English & thought it played just fine, though I did know that it wasn't the best version out there. I still haven't played Ys IX yet, but it's nice to see that Ys X is the best Switch port yet. I got into the Ys Series after Book I & II came out on the Wii VC, so I'm super glad to see the newest entry here on DF, even if it's "ahead" of any potential English release. For any Switch owners out there, it's also worth pointing out that the OG version of Ys I, the PC-88 version, is confirmed to be getting released via D4 Enterprises' Eggconsole series, and while I know it's not the "ideal" version of the game anymore, I'll definitely be buying that once it comes out, because I really want to play Ys I in its primordial form on my Switch.
Played the chinese version of X Nordics at the start too. On Switch. Still lacrimosa is the best in my heart. Played at every console and pc , even Vita.
A fellow Y's TGCD lover! The game brings back fun memories. Was my 1st cd game and totally blew our minds. Thanks for the heads on the next game! It looks promising and I plan on picking up the pc port one day for sure. I am impressed you can deal with translation with imports. I usually wait for the localization even if done by the fans.
YS franchise should not be underestimated by graphics. 😐 Ys 8 was one of the best experiences I had in a Japanese Action RPG, even with graphics that closely resemble the PS2 era.
Lacrimosa of Dana made me refall in love with Ys all over again, so i'm pretty excited with Nordics. I'll probably gonna miss the active party of the previous entries, but hopeful either way.
I can't wait for this game. I didn't mind the Switch versions of Ys VIII and IX, so it's great news that the Switch version of Ys X is better. Between this and Visions of Mana it's going to be a good year for action RPGs.
great that you covered YS . Beloved series.unfortunately i will most propably wait for the pc release . YS are of the few games that imo MUST be played at 60 fps

The fact that it runs on the new in-house engine falcom made is awesome, especially since they used it a little bit in trails into reverie and trails through daybreak 1 and 2. Gonna get this game after granblue fantasy relink.
Got my platinum on PS5 literally yesterday. Really enjoyable experience!
You picked up the japanese version? Can you tell how?
I'm more of a Trails fan, (Cold Steel 1 was the first jrpg i bought) but i can't wait when this releases on pc. I'm fairly new to jrpgs, i only started playing it in 2021, but i quite enjoy these games.
I can't believe digital foundry is covering a Falcom title!!! Huge W
I'm hoping for a Pc version, game looks amazing. Thanks for the review!
The opening theme song is so fuck*** good🤟🏻🔥
Really nice to see a video on this.
Thank you for making this, I also love the series and am waiting for X. As always, impecable work.
Haven’t watched it yet but it’s a day one for me on the Switch. Bought 9 for the Switch and was able to power through the choppiness. Lets go.
I'm glad to see that DF loves Ys too!
There is no bad Ys game, one of my favorite franchises that I recommend to everyone!
Happy with the new engine and new mechanics, but honestly, the game should run better on PS4.
Pretty cool to see DF covering niche Japanese exclusives!
God I need this localized ASAP. My favorite game series hands down. I've played and beaten every single one.
Thank you very much for the comments about the logs with replayable voice! These things in games are hugely awesome language learning resources.
Nordics became one of my favorite Ys game, the combat is so fun here.
A colleague of mine will be returning from Japan at the end of January, can't wait for the copy he'll take with him!
I was impressed by how much more fun traversal was improved between 8 and 9. I am glad to hear that 10 is as big of a jump!
Playing Ys VIII and realizing it takes place on an island of dinosaurs:
“Why isn’t this setting used more?”
Nihon Falcom still does banger soundtracks for their Ys games its a sure buy from me
To echo what has been said already, I gotta add my thanks too for covering these games. They're absolute gems that I love to see get attention.
Ys series games are easily my favorite action RPGs of recent times. Glad this one keeps up the quality.
John you have no idea how timely this video is as someone who just got into the Ys series in the last few weeks 😂
Really looking forward to this! thanks for covering it.
Best Action RPG series in existence.
I really love how sharp this game look on PS5.
Ys are my favorite series of all time!
can't wait for localization!
It's always nice to see mainstream AAA games being covered in this channel but with Ys being the subject on this video, I really hope more and more niche games will be getting reviewed on this channel more often
Surprised to see Ys. This series needs more recognition.
Man alive this comment section!! 😂
I personally enjoyed this video not knowing an awful lot about the Y's series. Reminded me of an old Super Play article, which is never a bad thing!
Alright I'm sold. Can't wait for this to come to the west
Ys is so good. The music. The combat.
Falcom sound team never disappoints!
Ive been playing ys turbografx and ys chronicles. Happy to see a new game dropped
2:22 I love this sound 💟🌌☮️
So glad to see Falcom love on this channel , I'm happy to know that the Switch port is perfectly playable, I may get it for PC but if timing is right I could wait to play it on Switch 2.
Ys 8 on PS4/PS5 is genuinely one of the best JRPG experiences I've had in years, really hoping for a Ys X English release soon
John thanks for covering this game it needs more recognition 😊😊😊😊
The PC ports are amazing of Falcom games.
The guy who does them is the guy who fixed Dark Souls 1
John the replaying voice clips has been a part of the trails series for a decade
Hey John, 2024 is the year of Japan. So many japanese games will be release this year. Amazing year for those like me who like japanese games.
Loved playing the two previous titles on PC at 120fps. I hope this one too is released on the PC eventually.
Ys 8 was one of the best experiences I had in a Japanese Action RPG, even with graphics that closely resemble the PS2 era.
Very happy to get to watch a Video Preview style video in 2024!
Totally agree. Fortunately we got PS5 versions of xiii onwards (and patched ps4 pro version Memories of Celceta) all running at 60 fps.
Any action game should be played at 60
PC won't make it look or run any better than on PS5. PS5 has 60fps, it would also play this at 120fps if they'd want to add that in.
I like that Falcom releases their games on GOG for a DRM free experience
@@vgnvideogameninja2930 no need for 120. Entry level pc even steam deck will definitely be able to play it at 60 .
One of the last things I learned in 2023 was how to properly pronounce the name of this series thanks to your top games video.
