Ah, I thought I was going crazy. Thanks for making it clear you re-uploaded the video. As well as adding more information to make the review the best it can be.
Thanks for re-doing the review, Mark. I can't disagree with anything you've said as, after the horrible port of IX on the Switch, I went straight for the PC version. What I really like about it - and other Ys games, particularly VIII - is the feeling it gives you of setting out on a big adventure. It's just so much fun. I love Falcom's graphics style in both the Ys and Trails games. This looks lovely on PC, which is no help on a Switch channel, I know (although I did buy the Switch Collector's Edition, too)! Possibly my favourite game this year.
You and Glen brought the Ys series to my attention with Ys 8 and I've been hooked on the series since. I am a sucker for Norse mythology so as long as the game looked decent was almost a for sure pick up for me! And no worries, not everyone bats at 1000 all the time. The real mark of quality of the channel is owning up to it the way you did. Major props
Nice review. I hope you didn’t feel bullied or pressured to change it and did it because you genuinely wanted to, which I’m sure is the case! This ended up being one of my favorite games in the year and this year has been a banger for jrpgs
This is a much better review, you really did a good job, Ys is pretty much a no-brainer for me but you brought very good and fair points, Falcom games usually have this "lower budget" feel and I'm fine with it, but I agree that the price doesn't really reflect it, I recommend waiting for a sale
Was playing the game 330 in the morning and wondered what you might have to say about it, open TH-cam and it’s my top video in recommended. Excellent timing
As do I. Great review as always. The reason I discovered the Y's game's and the Trail's game's is because of Mother's Basement. Afterwards, I discovered SwitchUp and it's been my go to Nintendo channel for years. 😊
You didnt really have to convince me to get this boys. Ever since i tried the demo it's now living rent free in my head! I MUST have this game. Too bad im too damn broke right now. As usual.😂
I loved Ys VIII, I put over 100 hours into it. I’ve put about 15 hours into this and…I really like it but it is quite difficult. A lot more grinding seems to be necessary for you to even stand a chance against bosses. I still haven’t wrapped my head around all of the systems, but once I do, I can see myself putting 100 hours into this one too. The exploration is addictive…gives me Skies of Arcadia vibes.

I think it is an improved review, good job. I loved Ys 8, I am actually reading the novelisation they realeased and it is quite fun. I haven't played 9 as it seemed to come with tons of issues on the Switch. This is certainly one to keep it on the wishlist. Certainly, getting Ys 8 first on a sale for less than £20 is a good advice.
I have been playing the game for 7 hours now, idk, i really like the naval combat, i found it fun and it gave me big Assassin's Creed 4 vibes! It's my 1st game in the series and i am loving it!
Appreciate the re-review. The $60 price-point is high but I sorta see it as the the price to translate a niche game that's never going to sell a million copies 🤔 NIS America gonna need to make it back somehow. Game also has a laundry list of DLC but thankfully, it's mostly cosmetic things and nothing story related
Still it should be included and be able to be provided with in game currency or flyer mile points or whatever. I refuse to buy games with this much DLC because it's greed plain and simple and i refuse to support greed. With inflation as bad as it is and games are already overpriced at $60, adding $200+ for DLC is ludicrously greedy. I didn't buy Pokemon's cut content for either sword, shield or Scarlet and Violet. I refuse to buy BDSP just to finish Pokemon Legends Arceus properly, because i revise to support greed. Legends Arceus has just enough replay value to me, to where i can play the game and not think about it, i know i made the right choice for refusing any DLC
One thing about the dodge. You dont need to time it at all. So long as its glowing blue as long as you are in the running animation, you'll trigger the dodge.
I’m glad you talked more about the ship’s mechanics, it looks very much like Suikoden IV, where you had your ship as your main headquarters and I loved that!
Patiently waiting for my copy to come in, and they just announced Ys Memoire the Oath in Felghana for January. Som I'm basically set for the next few months
I’m about to finish the game and it’s a good time. My only real issue is I wish the combat was more strategic and less mashy. Puzzles could be better and exploration a little more robust, but neither are bad. Performance isn’t awful, but the poor Switch has a really tough time whenever enemies spawn in. Which is mostly during ship raids. Fun game, still think I prefer Ys VIII, but there’s a lot of good in this title.
I just wish they find different ways to move the story forward other than just adding more dialogues and cutscenes. It's incredible how many cutscenes there are every step you make no matter what direction.
Yeah, it really feels sluggish so far because I make an effort to talk with all the characters. The game seems to toggle hard between intense combat and slice of life, giving me a little whiplash.
@@obits3 maybe it's just the botw effect for me how they kept it so simplistic with the dialogues and cutscenes. You can replay that one again and again. How would you even replay something as dialogue/cutscenes-heavy as this one?
Great review guys! Although I disagree with your take on wanting them to switch to an “established” engine for a stylized game from a small studio. Great review! Always love your content!
Like, they created their new engine just to avoid doing exactly that. And for the kind of games Falcom makes, they don't really need the bells and whistles that other engines have.
@ Exactly! I hate to say, his comment on that felt kind of out of touch to me. They literally just made this engine like 3 or 4 years ago. Expecting AAA from Falcom is too much. They aren’t that kind of studio. They’re small and they like it that way. I’m assuming they don’t want to pay those licensing fees to use an “established” engine. Plus, like you said. Their games don’t really need those bells and whistles.
Downloaded the demo yesterday but wanna play the New grandblue fantasy first I'm pretty sure this is closest thing the switch is gonna get to that series just buy looking at it 😂😂 I'll get to it at some point
I missed the old review. I was playing the game and was thinking, well I’m still playing the game and might as well clear it first and watch the review few days later, but then I saw the community post. Now I’m wondering what I missed 😂
Sup Mark, it’s been awhile since I’ve been in the comments.. I haven’t been feeling any games on switch lately but I actually been playing the Demo, just might pick up the full game. Awesome review like always 😊
It was this channel that initially got me interested in the YS series. A few years back either Glen or Mark mentioned YS VIII and just these last few months, I've completed VIII and IX. They were great games, though I will say after playing VIII on Switch and IX on the Steam Deck: I would much rather play X on anything other than Switch. Perfectly playable on Switch if that's all you have but just a better overall experience in every way (loading time, better graphics, full FPS) on modern consoles.
I'm playing it on Switch. I really liked the port. There's some bizarre FPS drops, but, overall it is a very good experience (we came from YS IX, that I really loved, despite it runs at 15 FPS on the streets of Balduq). Talking about the game, to me, it's straight to the top of my GOTY list. Heck, I think it's one of my all time favorite games ever.
First Ys game I have beaten since Ys 8. Great action jrpg from Falcom. It will be interesting to see what happens with the next Ys game in the series. Informative review!
I've picked it up on ps5. The combat is the best it has ever been. A big improvement on ys 8 and 9. The music is a big improvement on 9 which I didn't like at all. Negatives, I agree with your skill tree comments. Ship combat is meh but sailing around adds to the world and adventure. I would definitely recommend it to any jrpg fan, I'm having a blast.
I'm part way through the demo and although I found it a slow and wordy start its pretty awesome so far. I particularly like that the NPCs also flesh out this world and diffeent cultures. I will defintly remap controls now. Had to do it for ys 8 so why I havent done it so far for this demo I dont know.
I played the demo on steamdeck and it turned out to be so great that I bought the switch version to have this game physically and not digitally on steam. Although it looks a bit worse on nintendo and runs in 30 frames, it still looks really ok on switch. I got sucked into this game and the story and the bond of brothers in arms with this beautiful viking lady 🥰
The scores are much better this time and seem like a accurate reflection of the game for most people. They are still a little low for my liking but that's cuz I really enjoy this game I can't wait to see where the series goes next
Did you hear about the big patch that dropped today Mark? I hope you'll reflect that in a future video. (I can't just leave that there without immediately spoiling that it's a joke. Too cruel)
Playing the demo, I realized just how spoiled I’ve been with Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom. So many invisible walls in the world of Ys it seems. That said, once I got used to the more limited world, combat was pretty fun. Died a lot on normal mode since I’ve never played this type of game before. Overall, I decided to give it a chance. I’m finally at the part where you are set free to ride on your own, so we’ll see if things pick up or fall flat.
I like the game a lot so far, but the skill tree is a total nightmare that I wish we could eliminate. I don't want to customize my character or any of that garbage, being able to select which attacks I want to which button is perfectly sufficient. It should be the developer's job to plan this.
@@SwitchUpYt It's definitely badly designed, but I'm just tired of having to deal with this and spend time on it. The one in dq11 wasn't too bad, but even that felt like too much work and thinking. The extent of that sort of thing that I can get behind is probably more like dq8, where you just have to commit to one or the other with the skill points. And you only have to deal with it after leveling up, not endless stupid collectibles that you have to guess on what they do. Not fun!
@SwitchUpYt Yes exactly! Haha. Same thing I did, which is why I think it shouldn't exist. These types of additional mechanics just slow down momentum in the games. I guess they want replay value, but I don't think anyone that wants to replay a game like this again, is doing so because they want to tweak the character differently. It's pretty narrative driven and straight up action, so I think that they should just stick with that.
New to Ys here. The skill tree is really bad. I prefer systems where you are rewarded for increasing your personal skill or learning to use a new thing in a game. This game doesn’t know what it wants to be from my early impressions. The areas are full of invisible walls making your feel sort of “on rails.” There is a level system, skill tree, and some type of mastery mechanic. Like a traditional RPG, there’s tons of people to talk to, but most of it is flavor text level stuff which would work… if the world was open. I’m fine with more constrained games, but they should cut the fluff and just stick to gameplay and story. I feel like I’ll give this one a few more hours to see if anything hooks me.
Hey switchup could you review Astor The monolith blade? I got it for ps5 few months ago and recently about week ago i got it for the switch since my brother is hooked on our ps5 and been enjoying it again. I just wish some more games that captures that legend of zelda vibe i so miss in zelda franchise.
Personally it's 90% for me. But yep, the sea stuff was fairly shallow. I beat the game last year when it was released in Asian. And I will also play the Eng version soon.
I'm interested in the game, however with the over priced DLC, i won't get this one ever. I don't like the idea of games being hid behind pay walls from Hell like that. I refuse to buy Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Fire Emblem games, and several others that have twice as much the price of the game or more in DLC, meaning to me, the game will never be finished unless i spend in this case $300 including the game and DLC. If i get the base model, i will never be satisfied because of the DLC, which feels like cut content sold back as DLC. I vote with my wallet and hope that the devs, doing this stop or go bankrupt because i don't support greed.
Honestly felt like a bit of a letdown for me. Just too much visual repetition, especially in location design, not a fan of most dialogues being talking heads during the ship voyage sections either. Combat and character design are a blast, though.
disagree with the engine change remark. it runs extremely well on PC, even on an i7-8700 and 2080ti i'm getting 1440p 170 fps (maxing out my monitor). a famous modder worked on the game's optimization. the switch seems like just a touch too weak for this game and hopefully it gets a proper switch 2 version
I gave the demo a go. Compared to 8, this one looks more sleek and plays smoother. But thats about it. The combat feels more muddled and hard to read. Skill system is unnecessarily convoluted Story feels more generic. Voice acted lines are few and far between. And for some reason, the blue/red character duo thing (same with Fire Emblem Engage) feels so juvenile to me. Then theres the usual Ys / generic jrpg stuff, like weird physics and invisible walls everywhere. It feels polished, but with spotty production values and bogged down by the usual jrpg tropes. Price is too high, all things considered. But I appreciate the lengthy demo they provided.
Tried the demo but the draw distance was horrible. Ran past some boxes towards the dock, turned around and they were gone until i approached them again and popped in right in front of me. I think for the most part, 2024 is the year too much for third party Switch games. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Dragon Quest 3 and hope it's not held back by load times like star ocean
got it when it launched put in about 5 hours and was enjoying it quite a bit but then got side tracked when I decided to just check out Megaton Mushashi Wired and Farmagia...why do I always do this to myself. Likely will get sidetracked again by Mario Brotherhood, lol
Metaphor stoll the spotlight, but Y's X iss just as good.. ... "pandering" sites over hyped Metaphor, while Y's didn't pander to those sites.., they both deserve imo 8.5-9.0/10
I think the combat, the lock on the system, and the revive system is sloppy as hell! I'm surprised nobody is being honest with viewers by mentioning this? Even zelda 64 z targeting system does this better. The ys traditional free roam combat system was much more fitting and made more sense. I get they were trying something new, but the execution was poor. Add to the fact that the camera is bad and doesn't follow your character. It's not a bad game by any means, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it combat from the past games worked well? why change it?
It’s another NO from me. The visuals are so weak. Feels very lazy in many aspects, I downloaded the demo and I was so bored, skipping every cutscene possible. And to be honest, it looks so outdated on the outdated switch (I have the original model too no OLED) so it’s even worse.
Ys X is an ok game but it pales in comparison to Ys VIII and is also significantly weaker than Ys IX imo. One of my biggest disappointments of this year. Characters are flat, sea exploring is slow and uninspiring, most of the bosses are atrocious and the combat overall is significantly worse than the one of its predecessors.
@ We agree to disagree then. That’s why I used the „imo“. No judgement of entertainment media is in any way objective or facts. It’s 100% subjective. I found IX more enjoyable. By a landscape.
Really glad to get this one the way I want it - there’s significantly more info in here than the first version. I’m hoping it’s useful to you! Mark

Im loving this game after 20+ hours really good. The controls are super wonky but not to the point you cant figure it out.
Def gonna play this with the voices muted so I can ignore those story beats.
Honestly felt like a bit of a letdown for me. Just too much visual repetition, especially in location design, not a fan of most dialogues being talking heads during the ship voyage sections either. Combat and character design are a blast, though.
I really want to play that PC port with the offline co-op. But I still prefer switch. I'm conflicted
disagree with the engine change remark. it runs extremely well on PC, even on an i7-8700 and 2080ti i'm getting 1440p 170 fps (maxing out my monitor). a famous modder worked on the game's optimization.
the switch seems like just a touch too weak for this game and hopefully it gets a proper switch 2 version
Probably gonna Pick this one up on PS5. Better looking.
Seems like everything I play lately is pulling from Black Flag
Most looking forward to the new Yakuza Pirate thinf
I have play YS Series including YS X, TBH YS 8 is much much better than YS X
got it when it launched put in about 5 hours and was enjoying it quite a bit but then got side tracked when I decided to just check out Megaton Mushashi Wired and Farmagia...why do I always do this to myself.
Its awesome! Get it!
Is this Game only in English?
Yes
I think the combat, the lock on the system, and the revive system is sloppy as hell! I'm surprised nobody is being honest with viewers by mentioning this? Even zelda 64 z targeting system does this better. The ys traditional free roam combat system was much more fitting and made more sense. I get they were trying something new, but the execution was poor. Add to the fact that the camera is bad and doesn't follow your character. It's not a bad game by any means, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it combat from the past games worked well? why change it?
Nice 👍
I love ys but i cant possibly afford any more games at the moment 😂
Hi i am looking to buy the witcher 3 or metro redux on the nintendo switch which one should i buy first?
Mod your console and download both for free
It’s another NO from me. The visuals are so weak. Feels very lazy in many aspects, I downloaded the demo and I was so bored, skipping every cutscene possible. And to be honest, it looks so outdated on the outdated switch (I have the original model too no OLED) so it’s even worse.
Pls another all patched up
Mark do you hate me?! 😂
Or my bank account I’m curious 😂🤦
Sigh… backlog keeps getting bigger… wallet keeps getting smaller.
Not for me at that price I don't think.
Why bother putting "Performance Review" for the switch version? For 99.9% of multi-plat switch games it is "not as good as every other version". LOL
Such corny anime nonsense lol
No matter how many reviews you do, that sailing part still looks awful 😅
Ys X is an ok game but it pales in comparison to Ys VIII and is also significantly weaker than Ys IX imo. One of my biggest disappointments of this year.
Characters are flat, sea exploring is slow and uninspiring, most of the bosses are atrocious and the combat overall is significantly worse than the one of its predecessors.
it didn't top viii but it's miles better than ix.
@ We agree to disagree then. That’s why I used the „imo“. No judgement of entertainment media is in any way objective or facts. It’s 100% subjective. I found IX more enjoyable. By a landscape.
