  • This video is about encouraging you to get a baitcaster and show you how out of the box you can cast these without the backlash. There are several key tips along the video as well to help you feel more in control with your baitcaster. These will will cast alot further than a spinning reel allowing you to reach more fish so i really encourage you to try out a baitcaster/levelwind reel.
    Subscirbe for more!!!

Thanks for the lesson! We moved to Pensacola FL from Oklahoma and I'm going to start surf fishing, and this is a great video for a beginner like me. I feel much more confident going out and trying it with my Penn Squall, and I'm definitely going to use the duct tape tip until I get it down.

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well th-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

I'm THAT hardcore spinning guy who just got his first baitcaster for catfishing and have backlashed it almost every other cast and about to shelf it for the season before I found this video. My dude.... ❤❤ I even made sure I had my line memory synced up with the baitcast reel cuz I didn't know. 🤣 Good to know; also for you for future if you follow the memory of new line with your spinning reel your GTG, it's only when you run it backwards (the spool goes the opposite way the line turns) then it trys to "pop off" when you open the bail. Thanks again homie!! 🎣

I'm old. My reel is old. I have a Penn Squidder #140 I've had this reel all my life. Today I have it on a 10' surf rod, and can cast
200 yards of 40lb line no problem. This gets me into the main channel of the Ohio River at Alexandria Point,
Portsmouth. My PB was a 67lb flatty at that location. 2yrs ago I beached a 41lb flatty same spot. A spinning
reel would maybe get me 100 yards out if it was a surf casting outfit, a football field short of the main channel.

The biggest secret that isn't a secret is to cast with your index finger on the trigger. This puts your hand further back on the rod allowing your thumb to be basically behind the spool. This also allows your thumb to make the least amount of contact and makes feathering a breeze. Before I did this feathering was difficult at best.

  • @rfdsrd
    @rfdsrd ปีที่แล้ว +1

The spool end cap on a revolving spool reel is *NOT* to be used as a spool braking mechanism. Doing so will add friction wear to the spool spindle at the least. These end caps are there for two reasons - to better center the spool in the frame and to set the spool free play to a minimum. This is done by screwing in the end cap a little at a time until the spool feels the friction of the end cap. Then slightly relieve the friction and allow the spool to have full free play. That's it. Do nothing else with spool end caps.
These days, all "bait casting" reels will at least have 2 to 6 centrifugal brake blocks on the spool. Each of the blocks can be either removed (or turned off) to increase the speed of the spool. Initially, all blocks should be left on (or turned on), for maximum spool braking. Remove (or turn off) a block at a time as casting proficiency improves. Brake blocks will require taking off the gear side plate of the reel in order to adjust the blocks and are not a simple, quick braking adjustment as are externally controlled dynamic spool braking.
Some conventional reels also come with magnetic spool braking. This can be an array of magnets or a single magnet, and either are adjustable for the amount of magnetism applied to the aluminum spool. The magnets create "eddy currents" to metal spools, slowing them down. Most magnetic spool braking is dynamic, meaning the mag strength is easily adjusted with the turn of a knob on the side of the reel. Start off with full magnet strength and very slowly decrease the magnetism as one becomes proficient with casting.
There is a relationship between the payload weight and line diameter and wind direction and strength with regards to how much braking is required. For the very most part, full spool braking is the way to go when learning how to cast a conventional revolving spool reel. Initially, it will be "hand's off" casting, as seen in this video.
For absolute maximum casting distance, remove the level wind completely from the reel. These things just add a huge amount of wasted spool drag that will severely limit distance. After casting, lay the line back on evenly with yer rod holding hand fingers. No need for a level wind for throwing out bait chunks, but they can be handy for lots of lure flipping relatively short distances. Yep, ya might need a pair of rods 'n' reels - one for bait, one for lures. 🙂
The main line on these reels should be monofilament. Better quality copolymer mono (Sakuma, Sufix Tritanium Plus, etc) has less memory than cheap mono and will simply work better for casting. It also pays to add a heavier mono shock leader - this is Mandatory if maximum distance is required and Hatteras or pendulum casting techniques are used. If the main line is 14lbs to 30lbs, a shocker leader of 50lb mono is uni knotted to the main line ( i.imgur.com/LUkkC5w.png ), and will allow 3 to 8 turns of the leader around the spool with a payload drop off the rod tip of about half the length of the rod.
A cheap KastKing Rover 40 to 60 will easily do 100 yards with just centrifugal brake blocks and no thumb on the spool until splashdown. Enjoy, 👍

Love the idea you can tighten the tension knob all the way and cast without the thumb or nest because i cast 8+ oz with weight, leader+ bait in saltwater & the line physically burns my thumb as it is cast, so seeing i can cast it without the burn is fantastic. I got 100# 4 strand on my Penn Levelwind & 70# on my AG spinning reel. Casts smooth. Gonna try this technique this weekend in the yard with my Penn & see how it goes. Hope it works with no thumb or eagles nest 😂. 🤞... Thank you Sir for this video. BTW, what is that reel you have in this video?

Nice vid. How does a mag brake play into this equation for distance?

on the second cast, at the time of 3:43 - 3:45 (watch in slow motion) you put your thumb on the spool for a second to slow it down. Even though your shoulder hides your arm and you don't rest your thumb doesn't mean that, that's a "thumb free" on the second cast. At 4:12 - 4:13 time when you release all of the tension, you prop up your pole high so you can stop the spool before your sinker hit the ground. You are very "smart", using a 60-80 pounds mono line to demonstrate; with that kind of pounds the line is stiff and hard to backlash unless you're whipping the sh!t out of it. I am a beginner at baitcasting. You are right, my 6.6ft baitcast rod can cast as far as my 8ft spinning rod. Thank you for the tips. :)

I inherited a penn 85. You've convinced me to take it up and use it seriously to go for pike. What would be a decent rod to match up with it?

Question for you. I’m considering the Kastking Rekon 20 line counter reel. I will be casting 2-6 ounces of lead and want to be able to cast 150’-250’ of line. Will that be a good choice for my purpose? I will also be using this for depth control trolling, so that’s why I’m looking for a line counter reel. Thanks in advance.
