      The XKR is one of the most beautiful cars ever made imo. It's a dignified performance GT rather than just another tiny sports car, and it has some breathtaking curves, especially in the "hips".
      Absolutely in love with it in every way.

    Woah woah woah, "You can trace the XK's chassis back to the XJS"? Steve, totally wrong. The 2nd gen XK has/had an aluminium monocoque, in fact the F-Type uses a heavily modified & cut down version of it (hence the F's slight weight problem).

    • @lothar52
      @lothar52 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Jonny S this is correct. The lead body engineer is one of my good friends.... and the chassis is aluminum!!!! Not a XJS!!!

    • @varsas10
      @varsas10 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aldo the XJS used a chassis (well, monocoque) very similar to the original '68 XJ so you would point to that.

    • @bespincustompropsbombarta8300
      @bespincustompropsbombarta8300 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the previous model x100 shared xjs under pinning to save money when designed and helped boost flagging Jaguar sales which it did and helped save Jag from going under as its gorgeous design sold massively in the U.S.

  • @MarquisRex
    @MarquisRex 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I kind of tuned out after sutcliff said the x150 can trace its platform lineage back to the XJS. As one of the engineers involved in both the x100 and x150 can say this is wrong. The x150 was a totally new platform conpared to the x100 and XJS before it

      ***** Sour grapes my friend. You'll get over it when you buy the R Coupe. The R Coupe is a true sports car. The M6 and SL are grand tours. They are nice GT cars but are not in the same league as the R Coupe. I never thought I would be saying that. Great job Jaguar and Tata! Tata is the deep pocket that has allowed Jag to finally compete with the Germans. I am loving these times in the Auto industry!!!

    The face of this XK R Dynamic (the XK's regular face) looks so much sweeter than the aggressively, grimacing 'try hard' look of the XKR-S. The original XK8 in 1996 looked a bit awkward from its debut imo, but has since grown into a really nice looking car. I hope the replacement will be just as good, and then some.

  • @lewis72
    @lewis72 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Some of the 'facts' in this article are wrong.
    The XK has no chassis link back to the XJS. Furthermore, the F-Type IS a shortened XK platform. i.e. the front & rear are common to both vehicles, so to state that one has commonality with the XJS whilst the other is much more modern is wrong.
    This is common knowledge, so I'm amazed he stated it !

    • @1061shrink1061
      @1061shrink1061 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Lewis72 he also said the F type was more comfortable on the same road. I've been in both a fully blown XKR-S and also the F type R AWD, and the F type was noticeably more jiggly / rough over poor roads. The XK is still the more "wafty" of the two.

      Strange review indeed. Six weeks ago I finally bought myself a used 2013 XK. Why? Because I did not like the F
      Type - not only because I am 6.4 (the F Type is made for tiny people only), but also because it drives smoother, the V8 sound is nicer (the stupid crackling noises of the F Type get annoying quickly), even the six speed seems at least equal … ah, about everything just feels better. The XK feels so safe on the German Autobahn whereas the F Type scared me (not only because side and back visibility is a catastrophe). Yes, XK's electronic systems are not up to date, but who cares if everything else feels just perfect. In short, I don’t understand the F Type hype at all.

    I felt compelled to add my comments to this video, Firstly let me state that the XK is a 2+2 ie 4 seats.... whereas the F type is a two seater, therefore its like comparing apples to pears for a start. Secondary I have just taken delivery of a brand new XK Signature Convertible that only has 385 BHP...... gosh how do I cope I mean getting to 60mph in 5.3 seconds I mean its just not good enough let alone the 0-100 times of 10.2 seconds.......
    Let me just dispel any myths about this car - I have owned and driven many of fast cars, twin turbo V6 etc and all I can say is this "old" XK is simply just awesome and even sounds amazing, so if theres anyone thinking of a XK - go ahead and buy one because you wont regret it they are amazing, and in many ways IMO they are the F types more distinguished older brother...
    I feel I can say this on confidence as I driven both car myself - the XK don't forget is marketed as a GT car.......
    Rant over.......These guys just bug me when they bang on about not being fast enough and steering not responsive enough....all I say is fkin BullSh!t. These cars are superb and still turn heads, go ahead buy one you wont regret it!!!

    I still lust over the original XKR and the XJR of the same time. My dream 2 car garage is a black XKR Coupe and a matching black XJR. And possibly a black S-Type R to daily. It's crazy to imagine that these were all sold as new cars at the same time! The early 2000s are peak Jaguar for me.

    • @LoudModeOn
      @LoudModeOn ปีที่แล้ว

      They definitely produced some great cars during the Ford years. They also produced some stinkers, like the X-Type. My dream garage looks a lot like yours. However I think I'd swap out the S-Type R for an XF-R to daily. Would be happy with either though!

  • @countspankulots4024
    @countspankulots4024 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It's 2023 and I still can't accept that we will never have another XJ or XK. Those are cars that define Jaguar. It's like Mercedes dropping the S Class or BMW cancelling the M4/M3. These are cars that define the brand. They are what you see in your head the second you hear Jaguar.

  • @davidmyers6367
    @davidmyers6367 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Steve - you're wrong. First, the XK that you're driving in this video is built on Jaguar's aluminum architecture first seen in the 2009 XJ - so there is NO XJ-S DNA in the XK - at all - full stop. Secondly, the F type is built on a truncated XK chassis - essentially an XK with a shortened boot. If you don't believe me, take a tour at the Castle Bromwich plant where F Type's are built and ask the engineers yourself....like I did. You're considered a trusted source - so do your homework mate!

    I have a 2007 XKR and I wouldn't change it for an F-Type. (I would however for an XKR-S). I think the F-Type is a kid's car, while the XKR is a gentleman's car. By the way, I don't have to ask my girl to keep my jacket, while I drive her to dinner out... (That's what those two rear seats are there for, to take the extra luggage(!), while an F-Type has NO room for a week-end bag!). With the F-Type, Jaguar is trying to compete with the 911. That's not what Jag Lovers want. We want a Grand Tourer (with an R), not a Kart...

    What are you talking about?
    Neither car has a 'chassis' - both are monocoque all aluminium construction and the XK platform was entirely new - no DNA route to any previous Jaguars - not even the previous all steel X100.
    Also, having driven both, the lighter F-Type has a harder ride and a noisier cabin and is more of a sports car than the XK which is a very comfortable Grand Tourer.

    I am a Jag Master Tech of 19 years. I drive them and work on them everyday and would take an XKR over Ftype all day long. The XKR is a real quality, well made and designed car. The Ftype is just a cheap trash toy in comparison and is annoying EVERY time you start it and the engine `flares` making you look like like a massive dickhead, especially when you are trying to just start it quietly at 1am. The XKR does it all, with more quality.

      @sichere 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dr.strange1523 Me too and I appreciate the difference between the two.
      The XK has been out a long time and it only became "good" when it got a supercharged 5.0 V8 to push it along. The XK's interior is dated and the look is "classic" being a GT cruiser whilst the F type is a more of a GT sports car and both of their abilities are far greater than that of the average driver The F Type range has yet to develop as the XK has but it's got a great start but do hope they bring back a RWD model.
      However saying that I also have an XF Portfolio 5.0 V8 and with only 385 BHP still far more than what's needed on public roads but I think it has the true Jaguar ethos of - Grace Space Pace. It's the oldest one of the bunch and yet still has some better functions than the other two that should be standard with these models.
      The F Type is far from a cheap trashy toy, it's a very reasonably priced, practical and capable 550 BHP grown up play thing. that not many Jag Master Techs get to really appreciate and I consider the engine flare a great security as no one heard a thing when my friend had his electric car stolen at 1 am in the morning !!!!

To be honest I do kind of agree with you, its just reviewers and companies have been using the word semi auto gearbox for years. to try and make it sound less Civil. eg. the new 540hp F-type is an automatic. instead they'll say its a semi auto, because you can change gear with your fingers etc. I do agree with you but the word semi auto has become the norm nowadays for companies to make their autos sound more sporty. Talking out of his bottom. I have owned xkr's an f type and now the xk dynamic r and the latter is the best. There is absolutely no comparison to the f type the xk is far better. A slower car and not a racer but i'm built for comfort not for speed. My only complaint about the xk is the computer is very dated. the f type you can not even squeeze a bottle of wine inside.

    Why would you compare a 2 seater sports car to a 2 + 2 grand tourer? You’re either deliberately trying to discredit yourselves or the XKR. It’s irresponsible British journalism, you are all that’s wrong with this country.

    The F-type renders the XK redundant. The new XK would have to be more powerful and larger than the 'baby' F-type, putting it higher up the Jaguar ladder and thus demanding a higher price tag. That would make it a £100k car and that would kill it. There would have been room for a new XK if the F-type was a £40-£60k car.

    They need to bring a manual option to the F-Type. The car is clearly about the driving experience, not ultimate precision (unlike the 911) so it makes no sense that the 911 has one and the F-Type doesn't.

      The XK series are grand tourers whereas the F-Type is more of a full on sports car, so they may not directly appeal to the same customer.

    • @DoctorBJ
      @DoctorBJ 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      not at all. the XK is a massive grand tourer with a big trunk--built for speed, comfort and luxury over long distances. the F-Type is a full on sports car with an unusably small trunk, aggressive suspension tuning, and a short, nimble chassis. the gentleman polo player and the brash young footballer

    • @longtailgt
      @longtailgt 10 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @Brascofarian

    Jaguar already have an SUV... it's called Range Rover :/

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not the same thing at all. That's like saying Lexus already has an SUV, called the Toyota Land Cruiser. Or that Mercedes-Benz only needs the G-wagen (not that the Range Rover is anything like that agricultural). The Jaguar SUV will be a direct rival for the Porsche Cayenne, emphasising the Sport part of SUV.

    • @Brascofarian
      @Brascofarian 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      "Not the same at all"? The latest Range Rover Sport has exactly the same engine for one thing the same. Anyway, it's a false analogy, Jaguar and Range Rover are both premium marques, so is Lexus, but Toyota is not. Nor is the Mercedes analogy valid because Mercedes don't own a separate 4x4/SUV brand. Why do you think Jaguar, whose line mainly consists of executive saloons is any better placed than Range Rover, who basically invented the SUV, to produce a direct rival to the Cayenne? The Cayenne was produced to rival the Range Rover.

    • @harryc266
      @harryc266 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No there v8s just go in some range rovers... That's like saying Porsche have a a rally car because there engines go in Subarus.

    • @Brascofarian
      @Brascofarian 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no it isn't. Range Rover and Jaguar are the *same* company, it's called "Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC". Porsche and Subaru are *different* companies, so no, not even close to the same thing.

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brascofarian Same engine means nothing. The Corvette has the same basic engine you'll find in GMC trucks - it's just a means of producing power. The Cayenne was never meant to be a Range Rover rival - it was aimed directly at the BMW X5, which itself was aimed at the Mercedes M-class. Perhaps you might question why Porsche got into the SUV business before Audi, despite the latter's advantage in 4x4 experience.
