actually the demon is an incredible metaphor for the trauma that the mother is dealing with from the death of her husband. we can see she keeps asking the son not to talk about it, and the book says the more you deny, the stronger it gets. essentially by avoiding her issues, she has only made them stronger, to the point where they take over her. the books says it will never go away. but if you are smart, you can find a way to become friends with it. similarly, if we handle our trauma correctly, we can manage it well and still be able to function while using it to give us strength. what causes the mom to overcome the demon is seeing how much her son loves and needs her, and therefore is now unafraid of the demon. he tries to take her son, a metaphor that the mom will lose her son if she continues to give into her trauma, and she fights back to keep him and this causes her to show it that she is not scared of facing it anymore. Bro this is so genius, thrilling, horror, and entertaining at the same time. Imagine the kid literally having prep time to do all that. Bro is almost on Batman level IQ. Like, imagine how you could use the Babadook. Like manipulating him for his powers.
*The Babadook steals your hats* XD And the fact that the mom keeps denying that the Babadook is real, the more powerfully and she denyed it so many times. The mom did so many things wrong trying to get rid of the Babadook: 1. She denyed, so it becomes more powerful. 2. She tried to set the book on fire. 3. She tried ripping up the book. 4. She is filled with grief and hate. 5. She's angry at Sam. 6. She was scared Also the fact that Sam still loved his mom, even while she was possessed, and mean to him is true loyalty and a bro move. The dog was a hero. Sam was making sure to love his mom will the demon possessed her, to make sure to fend off the demon. The true way to fend of a demon is with love and kindness! Some say the Babadook is still being held prisoner to this day
A very big advantage with demons is fear, when your scared it gets more power. So you can either demand the demon to leave, or find out a way to stop it.
The babadook is the mums depression and grief at the death of her husband. The son reminds her of his death because of the birthday date and is also a physical reminder which is why she is barely coping with him and is emotionally distant. She just wants to give up and die which is why the babadook targets the mum more than the boy… she’s trying to ignore and suppress her emotions, but she needs to ‘let her emotions in’… when she acknowledges the grief and depression the babadook is conquered and contained. However, it can’t be killed because grief never leaves you, you just learn to live it just as the mum and son learn to live with the babadook.
that kid was smarter than any parent in horror movies the parents would just sacrifice their child and then say their grateful that their alive when they survive
I mean it could be, a kid doesnt know what proper fighting training is (if they didnt receieve on) so they would think just punching and kicking in air is training so he was techincally correct from the kids view it was training
Big part of my classes in drama pedagogics is how children playing games are ways to prepare and improve skills for the real world. Either is primal skills, we see hide and seek all over the world for instance, or its social skills, children mimicking parents and playing house for instance.
This little kid is one of the smartest people in horror movies because when he thought his life was in danger he made weapons to protect himself not only that he takes everything seriously way better than any other people who are way older than him in horror movies
The mom still reading the book even though it looks ominous - Is like reading a spoiler, not realizing it's a spoiler, and then lose your sheet after finishing reading it
I always felt that the Babadook was a metaphor for grief. She tried to ignore the grief of losing her husband by shoving it down with the “joy” of having a child. But as the years go on she realizes she doesn’t like being a mother and thinks that if it wasn’t for giving birth to her son, her husband wouldn’t have died. That builds resentment towards her own son that could easily be handled by grieving properly. When you ignore grief it just gets stronger and stronger until you get possessed with an anger at everyone and everything just for being alive. But once she finally got all of the rage out and realized that even if she hates him her son could never hate her, she lets it all out. Coming to and realizing she’s just happy to have still have someone who loves her. She regains motherly love for her son. Grief never really goes away, but instead of being ignored, it’s handled and taken care of.
That’s why the Babadook is a man in a hat. That’s why they both experience it but the son to a lesser degree since he never actually knew him. That’s why they feed him worms.
if we ever end up in a zombie apocalypse, im finding this kid to be the ring leader of the group. This badass 6-year-old had more survival instinct and combat skills than any adult I've seen in a horror movie.

Yeah most kids in movies are just dumb But not this one He figures out how to create weapons from simple materials trains in combat (not in actual combat but enough to atleast fight) And then realises that if thd babadook posses his mother it puts him in a vulnerable position as his weapons whould harm a person so literally he literally is more mature than his mother who did nothing to protect him
*kid yells at aunt, sets a fire cracker, and brought a crossbow to school* *mother* : grounds him *Cinema summary* : this is bad parenting. I would sell that mother if I could
I feel like the best response to the crossbow and the catapult is to congratulate the kid on his ingenuity and MacGyver style ability to use what he has to make what he needs, but the babadook doesn't have a body so these things won't actually phase him. The mom did so many things wrong trying to get rid of the Babadook:
1. She denyed, so it becomes more powerful.
2. She tried to set the book on fire.
3. She tried ripping up the book.
4. She is filled with grief and hate.

@@psnblacknelia5579 John Wick loading silver bullets to brutally murder the demon, or at least torture it.
