Who Doesn't know the anime
The whole point of "Kira" is to let the world know that there is somebody with god like powers serving out justice. It doesn't therefore make sense to kill so randomly that society won't notice that there is a pattern.

In the original material light only used heart attacks as a means to be noticed, he wanted crime rate to go down, figured he could kill all who opposed simply, and be an untouchable God. Once he knew L existed he didn't want to lose, it was his ego that made him think he was better and could allow himself to be noticed without any issues. All he had to do was get L's real name and he was done. But L could have also caught Light so much earlier if he just did things differently so it's all just a fault for the sake of good content.

Case in point, if Light was mean to die in his 60s, then he only has till he 30 to get goal active. Since Light is already a late teen to twenty, that would mean he only has ten years to make the world bend to his knee.
Ten years may seem like a lot of time, but it really isn't. He would need to write down key player names very quickly and without error. This alone would take time to achieve

I think this movie has my favorite Death Note kill. You can't use the Death Note to kill anyone who's name isn't written in it (as in, you can't write "Jay Jackson will kill four people then die"). Rather than do that though, Light killed both Naomi and his girlfriend to make it happen indirectly. That blatant loophole abuse is why I love Death Note. Sure, you could have gotten a marginally interesting story from the notebook alone, but the main appeal is exploring the ridiculous ways you can exploit it.
In the manga and anime, that is literally against the rules, if the death will affect anyone else to die, it cannot be done. The note will instead make it to where the one person dies in a way that anyone else won't be killed. You can't say, "John Smith will die from an explosion" if that will affect others
@crackedy anne You sure? I might be misremebering it, it has been a decade or so, but as I remember it, Light never wrote, "Naomi will kill someone, then die." He wrote something along the lines of "Naomi will fire her gun in this museum and then die" no rule violations in sight and whoever the bullet hits is guaranteed to survive to avoid said rule violations. *Then* he wrote, "My girlfriend will get hit by a bullet in this museum and then die."
This isn't the Netflix movie. The rules are the same. Light just figured out a way to make the death happen while circumventing that rule without actually breaking it. There's no rule in the Death Note about not being allowed to do things that *could* be lethal to anyone not named in it, just that those things can't actually succeed in killing anyone. So he didn't. He wrote only that Naomi would discharge her weapon then kill herself. *Then* he went to write in his girlfriends name and wrote that she would die from a firearm discharged in the same room at the same time while Light fully intended to have her in close proximity to him and Naomi. He correctly guessed the Death Note would make it happen on its own, without any rule violating commands from him, simply because it would be ridiculously unlikely someone else show up to the exact same place at the exact same time to shoot his girlfriend and then no one else before dying himself.

I just realized, the scene where Ray Penber writes the names of his fellow agents on that paper shouldn't have happened. Light couldn't make him do it via the Death Note since the Death Note doesn't allow you to kill people indirectly without writing their names down as well. Which means Penber did that of his own volition, which is absurd for an FBI agent to do, knowing damn well that Kira had every intention of killing those agents and couldn't do so without their names, and would likely kill him after doing so anyway. A real agent wouldn't have fallen for that and simply would have refused.
However, there might be something I'm forgetting that would've explain that part that I can't remember, so if anyone knows, please tell me.
In the manga and anime, Light as Kira threatens to kill Raye's fianceé, Naomi and his family if he doesn't write down the names. So, out of fear for his loved ones he writes the names down.

I'm one who can enjoy any show regardless of where it's from and what genre it is, as long I think it's story is interesting and the first few episodes do a good job at keeping my self captivated. The following could just be because I watched subbed on Netflix instead looking for a dubbed version... but I just couldn't even make it through the first episode of Death Note. I watched it after watching netflix adaptation a few times. I enjoyed the adaptation a lot but then just couldn't enjoy even the first episode of the anime.
for the first "attack" L basically relied on the fact tha light would be watching tv at that exact time

Ryuk looks funky in the life action version
dang my guy survived an evil loan shark, L, and a battle royale dang this mans insane
I love how Ryuk is actually more moralistic than most of the people in this, despite his appearance. Then again he's the God of Death, so he'd have a lot of experience with people dying I guess.
Ya know it makes sense he would rather people death of old age than outright dying. Humans have children, die and then there children repeat the cycle. Being a mortal/immortal god he would have to maximize death and the way to do that is too ironically wait. Children are born and nobody stops dying at least for now, so assuming each death is worth an hour, he gets more than enough naturally to sustain himself. So he might actually be very selfish, but to be selfish he would be selfless. He still wants them to die but he wants them to breed, so that more will die.
so he would have enough to last 36000 years at any given time i guess

1. By doing so you are trying to obtain their wealth legally. I can only imagine it would appear suspicious to the authorities that a billionaire changed his will to someone random right before he died.

This movie actually does the manga and anime so much justice, especially compared to the netflix version.

@@onyxia8786 death note's plot was pretty realistic imo, L's successors aren't gonna be the only ones chasing down Light, literally anyone with a vendetta would be after him and finding everything they can about him
And besides, Light was always doomed to lose from the moment he picked up the book because the story isn't about Light winning and becoming the god of the new world, it's a story about Light's pride and as Ryuk says, every user of the death note will face horrible misfortune

Fun Fact: In the anime, Light started changing his strategy as soon as the police database was updated just so L would be forced to suspect the Japanese police force. This caused him to investigate them secretly which resulted in a majority of the detectives walking out and refusing to cooperate with L. The movie makes up for it though with the art museum scene in my opinion.

The book rules are explain early on in the series. Death note series is more about the cat and mouse plotline then the actual notebook.
