  • Learn to simulate the short-cut distillation column and get initial estimates for rigorous distillation column design. This is our 1st simulation exercise based on the given values of % purity. The problem statement for today`s task is given below:
    Problem Statement:
    A feed mixture (liquid) consisting of 60 mol% methanol & 40 mol% water is fed to the distillation column at 5 bar, at a flowrate of 1000 kgmole/h. The % age purity of methanol required in the top product is 99% (liquid), and that of water in the bottom product is 99%. The pressure in the condenser is 4.8 bar, while in the reboiler is 5 bar. Estimate the initial design parameters.
    In our next lecture, we will use % recovery values to design short-cut distillation column. Stay Tuned!!

    Why do we have to multiply by a factor 1.3 to get external reflux ratio?

      The actual reflux ratio is calculated by multiplying minimum reflux ratio by a factor. That factor usually lies between 1.3-1.5. That's why it is multiplied with 1.3
