- Do you struggle to get your low end (kick and bass) to sound as fat/loud as the pro mixes? Here's something that can help...
In this production tutorial, we're going beyond the basic kick and sub tips (like sidechain, eq, etc) to talk about something that is likely holding your low end back...
Kick and Bass Phase!
Don't panic! Zack will simplify this low-end mixing technique and have your kick and bass sounding stronger, and more consistent, than ever before.

You guys worked with nostalgix?
Yup! She’s cosmic fam. Been with us for years ♥️
I've been producing music for 20 years and for the last 8 years even professionally. I actually did not know about that random phase button in serum, and this easy video pretty much explains so many hours of troubleshooting for me looking back, lol! Thank you!
You’re welcome!! Love hearing things like this ♥️👊 puts a smile on my face when I can help. Appreciate you watching and dropping me the line!
Now I need to find this setting on other synths, any tips?
@_ENOC You have to read the manuals. Most modern software synth (VSTi), like Serum, Vital, Spire, Dune, Avenger, Phaseplant, Falcon (even the old Sylenth) etc. have this option. There are rare exeptions, like Pigments from Arturia (which is a shame for such a synth). But take care and it's not shown in this video: When using an EQ for removing the low end, you will mostly shift the phase again and your hard work is ruined 😂
@@CCXYZ0123thats why i prefer not low cutting kick and bass, just leave it at that, phase shifting can eat up headroom anyway.
IMO not looking into phase seems kinda unprofessional tbh
but yeah, you never stop learning
The amount of people that say they’ve got a “secret trick” or whatever is astounding but what’s more astounding is you actually deliver! Great tutorial!
Thank youuuu 👊 happy you enjoyed this!
This is quite honestly the best kick & bass video tutorial ever. Zack you never disappoint with the most underrated mixing knowledge 🔥
❤️ thanks brother!! really appreciate it and hope it can be put to good use! for something so small and subtle, it makes a legitimate difference!
I really enjoyed that you also mentioned what happens when playing multiple notes. In my opinion, many tutorials only focus on a single case that‘s very static but don‘t go into further details regarding a more complete use case.
appreciate you!!! Really happy you enjoyed this one and hope it can help. This is one of topics that can be a bit harder to explain so means a lot to hear you say that 👊♥️
This is the first video of yours I've watched, but I love this format - short video, clear explanations, real-time demonstrations - subbed!
One of the best explanations I've seen on Kick/Bass phase correction! Linking note velocity to phase values is a stroke of genius mate
BIG thanks!! Appreciate you 👊♥️
This is the absolute best explanation on all of TH-cam. This guy is an outstanding communicator, and the video editing is fantastic. If I was still pursuing a career this would be pretty a really good sell for any of their services
I appreciate you!! ❤️ 👊 means a lot!
Finally someone who can explain things CLEARLY and easy to understand ! The quality of your videos are extremely well done as well. Subscribed ! This video should have 200k views...
THANK YOU!! really appreciate you saying that 👊❤️ means a lot
This was a HUGE tip. Never tried this before but already see/hear a difference in my mixes. Thanks guys.
Happy it helps!! That’s awesome to hear 👊♥️
Your videos are really gems, short but still full of helpful informations. Thank you for your effort in creating these videos for us and sharing your music production experience 😃
You’re very welcome!! Appreciate you leaving this message ♥️👊 means a lot!
Bro !!! That’s sick man !!! Well done ! Man you can teach and communicate and it’s useful !!!
Seriously great videos on kick/sub phase. Appreciate it. Subbed.
Phase is pretty much one of the first things I check betwen kick and bass, or low end layers or parallel channels specially if equing.Lately im using fuse by mastering the mix.It makes things really easy.Love this channel.
Really enjoy these videos. Short, sharp and very neatly produced.
I really appreciate that!! ♥️👊 was nervous about this one because it can be tricky to explain phase…wasn’t sure if this was gonna click!! So means the world, thanks
very professional editing and easy to understand explanations, underrated!
thank you!! i really appreciate you saying that ❤️👊
Big Z did a similar topic on this and was mind blowing , But you my friend have just completed the final touches on how to move the phase with the midi notes, Spot on this fab video ✌😎 this will be added to reminder list.
Amazing!! Love the Moose content, and your videos are the best. Thanks Zack!
Hahahaha thank you!! ♥️ and that’s from moose and I 😂
I don't know how to thank you enough. Even though I'm an advanced producer, your video already taught me a very important trick. I subscribed the channel. You are a very good educator who can tell a very important trick under 10 min unlike most of educators who intentionally prolong contents to pretend to be like "I tell a lot of things"
Thank youuuu 👊♥️ I really appreciate you saying that!! I’m always happy to hear that the tips are useful/helpful!!
Outstanding masterclass in under 7 minutes! THANK YOU!
thank you rafael!! i really appreciate you dropping the message. its great to hear that these vids are helpful!
Dropped a like 👍🏾 thanks for making phase alignment easy to understand
Glad it helped! ♥️👊
Great vid, no filler doesn't waste any time. Thanks!
You’re welcome Patryk! Appreciate you dropping me the comment too! 👊♥️
This is absolute top of the line mixing tips hard to get elsewhere. Thank you!!
Thanks dude!! 👊♥️ always appreciated!!
Amazing content bro !!!
Great tip! Indeed something I haven't seen anywhere else 🔥🔥🔥
♥️♥️ thanks! Hope it can be put to good use!! 👊
This was great, Zack!!
Thanks brotha!! 👊 give it a shot…it seems subtle (and it kind of is) but the difference it can make is always worth it!!
Great tutorial. Really important to point out at the end that the relation of the kick to the bass changes when your bass changes notes but the kick holds the same pitch. I guess another thing you could try is shifting the kick's fine pitch slightly for different bass notes, but either way you approach it, it may need some automation or fine tuning to match kicks with changing basslines if you want to get to that level of polish.
There's a recent plugin this past year called Mastering the Mix FUSER which has a nice built-in feature that handles smart EQ dynamic ducking and auto-phase optimization. It analyzes something like a kick vs. bass playing over like 10-15 seconds and it will auto-rotate the phase to the optimal placement that gives you the strongest correlation of the two audio signals at once. It's convenient considering any additional mixing you do in a track, such as EQ, distortion, compression, etc. all makes slight additional waveform changes, which may undo some of the work you do further up in the signal chain, like changing the initial phase knob all the way back in Serum. You can instead just put FUSER at the end of the bass FX chain, and re-run the phase auto-correction.
Excellent, thanks for sharing ❤
You’re welcome!! Appreciate you watching and dropping the message!! 👊♥️
Eye opening. Thank you!
Happy it helps!!! always appreciate you watching 👊♥️
This channel has been my biggest reference for improving my mixes! I can't believe you guys don't have a patreon yet!
Hahaha thanks! We have a school for 10+ years with 800+ alum!! No need for a patreon!! 😅
The best kick & bass video tutorial ever ! thank you !
Thank youuu!! 👊♥️
So after my last message I decided to put this to the test.. & WOW ! this has defiantly made a big difference to my kick and bass mix, the low-end just stays where its should with now power drop outs in all my years in production this is what I was missing, the final jigsaw puzzle to my over all mixing. Thank you Cosmic Academy ✌😎
Happy the final touch was able to help!! ♥️👊
@TheCosmicAcademy it definitely made a massive difference, especially when you move the phase using automation to tune up with your kick drums. You can really hear the difference when you do this in real time.
really good tutorial, thank you
really happy it helps!! appreciate you watching and leaving the message! ❤👊
I didn’t had any idea about this but damn this is eye opening for me. Thanks for sharing this. 🙏🏽
Happy it can help!!! It’s a rather small, and nit picky topic but it really does make a difference when you’re making music for clubs/festivals/any bigger system ♥️👊
Yessss this was excellent! Never seen a video on this topic
♥️♥️ thanks and hope it can be put to good use!! It’s a very nitpicky detail but it really does make a difference!
I wish there were more music production videos like this one. It's crucial to rely on your ears, close eyes when changing sliders/knobs values. Never rely much only on spectrums/oscilloscopes/other graphical displays, those are just great supplements for your ears!
if it sounds good = good
if it sounds good + you are aware of such slight details on the oscilloscope + you have more control over your sound = PERFECT
Exactlyyyyyyyyy!!! ♥️👊
This literally topped it for me. Thank you so much. I also use diva and would like to know does this work for diva as well and if so how ? Thanks 🙏🏻
Great video thank you 🙏
My pleasure!! Really hope it can help!! ♥️👊
I just discovered yout channel and after a random video I just knew that you put quality contents, so I subscribed immediately.
Keep up the good work, you are helping so many producers that begins or that have more experience also.
This tool looks amazing, I downloaded your link but I have only files components vst and vst 3 but not a dmg. can you help us with that. Thank you man
Thank you!! Really appreciate the kind words and makes us happy to know these vids can help ♥️👊. To install, you just have to drop those files into the respective folders. they are located in HD>library>audio>plugins>component/VST/vst3
Amazing thank you :)
phase automatization for different notes is mind-blowing
right!!?!? its not always needed/necessary but in those specific instances where kick and bass just aren't gel'ing...it can be one of the potential solutions!
@@TheCosmicAcademy
If you use (analog) outboard synths you never have an exact phase 😄 Also good luck with this method when you have glides 😉
Aren’t there Plugins that handle phase issues automatically, mainly made for multi-microphoning drum-sets but maybe also useable for these bd/bass issues
@@WackyJackyTracky Yeah this method is overkill for me,though yes,it will sound louder and punchier.
My focus is on sound-design,composition and arrangement rather than these micro adlustments. Also I can understand the point about phase reset on percussive elements for consistency but not that much on synth sounds because phase random makes them sounding less repetitive and boring.
holy shit 2 years of mystery for me has been resolved in this video. Subscribed and will be back for more!
♥️👊 happy it helps! Happy to have you part of the fam here
that one's gold! Thanks
You’re welcome! 👊♥️
Thanks for a great explainer video, very informative. Also, i would LOVE to join your academy. I have applied! Thanks again
you're very welcome! appreciate you saying that 👊❤️ happy to hear you filled one out!! keep an eye out as we go through them pretty regularly and will be reaching out

You're welcome!👊♥️
good stuff, kudos
Glad you enjoyed it! 👊♥️
BIG UP!! looking forward for new content :)
Thank you!!! really appreciate you watching and got plenty more comin (like the one I just posted today hahahaha)
Well im convinced! New sub here..great stuff..
Thanks and happy to have you part of the fam!! 👊♥️
Thank you
of courseee!! give it a try and I hope it can help your low end!! ❤👊
Great video!!!!!
Thanks dude 👊♥️
Great video!! I have also heard that high pass filters change the phase and that a linear phase eq is a way to avoid phase issues… so now I use linear phase eq on kicks and basses. Is this correct?
i didn’t know vin diesel was a producer
That’s incorrect…you didn’t know Zack was in fast and furious!!
As always, hope this one helps!!! ❤

Question 🙋♂️! Now, I found this very intriguing and helpful. However, I noticed that the kick used had a sub level with it. The technique described, does it apply to the kicks with sub already in it, or is it just kick only?
I ask this because I usually separate the kick notes from sub and mix those separately. I find it better for mastering as well. Don’t get me wrong though, what you described basically made my life a lot easier. I just wanted to know because I was confused.
Edit for spelling btw
for the kick/bass phase automation, I wonder if you could just dial in the osc phases and then throw a 0 feedback 100% wet delay at a milliseconds scale to tweak the phase (with some automation)
this could affect the attack timing on a minuscule level but it would still be like pocket playing
Could elaborate further?
yea man really good job, i'll take that advice
👊♥️
Thanks bro
you're very welcome! ❤️👊
That hack about connecting to velocity 😂 Simple yet fire!
Hahahaha happy you enjoyed it! 👊♥️
Great tutorial! I mainly use Sylenth1 for the Sub bass and Mid Bass will this technique works the same in Sylenth1?
Thanks glad it was helpful!! Yeah in sylenth you can then retrig on to create consistency between each note. Then you can use the phase knob in the oscillator to adjust!
Hi Thank you Very much about this video you realy help me a lot but I have to ask if i use other vst synth like arturia stuff or diva or any other synth how i fix the phase and consistency of my bass layers? and again thank you for all of your videos it is realy help me a lot
You’re welcome!! I think I’ve answered this several times already in the comments if you wanna scroll, but there are third party plugins that can adjust phase!!
I am amazed to see that not a single person asked this question, what if we are using a sample for bass? I understand in that case there wouldn't be phase randomization but what about automating the phase? is there any plugins that does the magic or am missing I something?
I bounce my kick sample and bass both to audio files, then manually sidechain by shortening the kick sample and putting a fade in on the bass and shortening the beginning of it for each downbeat. And as far as consistency goes, I copy and paste the bass for each downbeat so it's the same thing every time. Thoughts?
That works with VSTI synths for bass (which I've never liked using) it's going to be hard with vintage beasts on the phase. But I have to say in my 30 years producing I've never really tried this. Nice one :)
If you use (analog) outboard synths you never have an exact phase 😄 Also good luck with this method when you have glides 😉
Aren’t there Plugins that handle phase issues automatically, mainly made for multi-microphoning drum-sets but maybe also useable for these bd/bass issues
my TR-909 and TB-303 have just joined the chat 😄
Absolute gold
thanks farbod!! ❤️ I'm starting to get nit picky with the tips here haha but this one actually makes a HUGE difference as soon as you apply it! Give it a shot and lmk if you have any questions 👊
It's this level of attention to detail that separates the truly professional sound@@TheCosmicAcademy
This is a fantastic video. Thank you! Also - one of my life goals is to meet Moose in person and tell him what a good boi he is.
Hahahahhaa moose is gonna be headlining the dog stage at ultra next year. Gotta be there! 😂👊
This is a great tip, thanks, but what about other synths and audio etc. How do you do this same thing? I’d be interested in seeing that for sure.
Will this be nessaserry to do if i use Kick & Bass Samples from a proffesional artists sample Pack?🤷🏽♂️🙏🏽 And thanks for the awesome helpfull videoes you make!🙏🏽💪🏽💯
The best fucken video I’ve watched so simple
♥️👊 thanks Andrew! Happy it can help
Brilliant 👏🏻 always do this a different way. Use Serum mostly and this will save me a lot o faffing about
woow 😮🤩 Fantastic !!
Thank you!!! 👊❤️ appreciate you watching and dropping us the comment!
In serum it’s easier. What about the sample that we use for the subbass? How to emulate the randomize mode and make sure there’s no phase issues?
Samples (if they are a one shot) are always the same! You can also use other techniques to adjust the phase for audio…you can nudge the file a few milliseconds and that will adjust the phase relationship. You can also try flipping phase using your DAWs utility plugin. You can also use phase plugins (ssl, voxengo pha, etc)
How would you fix this with audio tracks? Groovy Greetz!
Check out MFreeformPhase for a free plugin option! 👊♥️
Funny thing is, on my desktop speakers, I couldn't hear the difference, but then I put on my in-ear monitors and could hear the difference.
On the one hand: This is thought provoking on a lot of levels. Although, I feel like there are times I like how the phase cancellation sounds. It might give the kick a slight accent that compliments things.
On the other hand: There are definitely times I don't want it, and it exists, and now knowing this is another tool to the arsenal of things to try is useful.
But it still makes it clear this can be somewhat subtle and then you have to know the right context within which those knobs make a difference. I tried playing with them in a different context, didn't hear a difference, so I thought I'll have to figure it out later.
Totally know what you mean!!! And in this case with low end, it’s obviously going to be specifically for the bigger systems like club, or car, where those differences add up!! ♥️👊
@@TheCosmicAcademy Oh yeah, that's right, clubs are loud. Sometimes I take my earplugs for granted.
(The irony / humor in this statement being I frequently find myself within the 1st five rows at festivals because the bass needs to vibrate my every fiber)
Could you also dial it in and them route the note mod to phase in order to have it adjust incrementally with each note and avoid automation all together?
Killllerrrr 🔥
Thanks!! Give it a shot n lmk if you have any issues. Makes a legitttt difference!!
3:56 when you say “phase aligned”, what is the best way to measure degree of alignment?
Will it be when there is less of a dip/no dip in the wave at that point? Like you had a bit of a bulge in the wave, but by then end after adjusting your side chain the wave made a smooth cone shape, is that more phase aligned ?
You can ise a phase meter which shows L-R phase alignment (just pan kick left, bass right)
thought about if it'd possible to link phase to key, so that the phase changes dependent on the played note...?
Man... This one also!!
Hahaha happy these videos can help! 👊♥️
Thanks for this video, but how do you get a sine waves phase to not move if you have a long sub note playing? Setting the phase to 0 does not help?
your videos are giving vin diesel but if vin diesel was headlining edc and I'm here for it. side note: I can't tell you how many instructional videos i exit out of because the vibes are off and or the guys are cringe and boring. Learning music production can be daunting at times and its rare to find someone who can make it enjoyable. Keep em comin!!!!!! also, love your pup!
I used to get the vin diesel thing every single day of my life 😂 as I’ve aged though I’ve drifted away from my fast and furious friend…hadn’t gotten that comp in a while hahaha. Happy the vids can help and moose says thank you too! 🐕
Amazing video ! What if I use nexus how do I solve that problem ?
Not sure if nexus has a phase knob. Otherwise you could always use a phase rotation plugin outside of nexus.
@@TheCosmicAcademy PERFECT THANKS !
Sorry, coming from other genres of production i am not fully following as i dont use serum but want to try to understand how this applies to other instruments. I get how you can shift phase on things but are the both kick and bass coming out of serum in this example? And is the bass triggerred to restart by each kick hit to start at the exact same time relative to the kick eack kick hit? If so then i understand this. But if its not then i am having trouble comprehending this because then each individual hit would need to be phase adjusted.
The kick is a repeating audio sample…the bass is coming from the synth, serum! We’re just playing with the relationship when they overlap and perform at the same time trying to create as much consistency as possible. If you didn’t have serum, some other synths allow you to adjust the phase of the oscillator. If you’re using audio samples for bass you can adjust phase using “MFreeformPhase” for a free option!
Deserve a sub
How would I do this with a classic jungle drum loop?? Can't change the phase of a loop?
Great vid but how would one be able to check the phase using a synth other than serum?
You can scroll through the comments!! I’ve answers this a bunch of times. Third party plugins!! 👊♥️
thanks dude
@@TheCosmicAcademy
Game changer
♥️♥️ thanks bro!! Really hope it can help the low end!!
@@TheCosmicAcademy Definitely going to try this on the song I'm working on
I saw this exact same concept for a youtube video except they said to make the waveform look like a buttplug which was interesting
😂 I will forever remember it now
Ok bute what if you record analog synths or if you use soft synths where you cant adjust the phase and stuff?
you can always record to audio and you can try a few things to make the relationship better. You can nudge the sample a few milliseconds on the timeline/grid, you can flip the phase using a utility plugin in your DAW, or you can use a phase plugin, like Voxengo PHA-979, SSL has a phase plugin as well. As mentioned in the video, you dont have to be "perfect" here, just a little bit of phase correction goes a long way! These can do the trick ❤️👊

What do you use to see the wave form display? Don't have this in fl
respect the Moose! Thanks Moose for the fat low end :)
Moose gives you a his little fist to bump 👊
Wait, you adjusted the phase of the kick using Serum? So does that mean you're not using a kick sample? Then how does this work for samples?
Good video, but what if the bass notes change ?
What is you're using nexus, sylenth1 or any other plugin that doesn't have this feature? Is there another way?
Check out MFreeformPhase for a free plugin option! It allows you to do this through post-processing!
What if a DJ Mix One Track in the other and they both „cancle“ each other, because the one Kicks Phase goes up and then down and the other one goes down and then up.
I‘m asking, because Sara Landry showed in a Tutorial, that the Kicks Phase goes First up (over Zero) then down.
Thanks
That happens in every dj mix if you listen carefully! Hahaha inevitable. Don’t worry bout it 😅
how does this works when you work with 808 oneshots and not a vst ? :)
Check out MFreeformPhase for a free option!
Map to velocity? Eeeh, so why not modulate phase with keytracking for the pitch changes? You could also just bounce the audio clips with the "fixed" phase rotation.
do all pros doing this like this or another way but same point ?
Does this apply with the kick part if youre using audio samples?
Yup!! Obviously you won’t have the phase knob to adjust inside a synth, so instead you can try a few things to make the relationship better. You can nudge the sample a few milliseconds on the timeline/grid, you can flip the phase using a utility plugin in your DAW, or you can use a phase plugin, like Voxengo PHA-979. That allows me to adjust phase on audio samples
