How To Start Your Speech (3 excellent openings)

  • As a speaker or presenter, you barely have 30 seconds to convince your public to listen to you; afterwards, it's almost impossible to change their mind. You'll find here three types of speech openings to hook your audience, followed three examples of speech beginnings (TED: Richard St. John, Simon Sinek et Jamie Oliver) that catch attention in an effective way.

    Here is what I created:

Look at this pencil. Look at it. Does anybody know where it came from? The Earth people. The Earth. The only Earth we got. And we choose to take advantage of this.

Many thanks to Jeff Roy (Jean-François Roy)! You changed my opening speech presentation from boring to something interesting. Let me share you my real research . story.
Before I start my research presentation I would like to share you my personal story that makes me interested on the idea of agricultural insurance. When I came to Mozambique, I surprised watching different empty bottles everywhere. So, I decided to write my research proposal on WTP for waste glass bottle in Maputo city ( Master Degree). However, different professors suggested me to change the title since it is not directly related with my profession. So, my supervisor advised me to change my title by willingness to pay for horticultural insurance. I felt really bad that day because I couldn’t have any idea about it. So I get out the point and I come to present on Willingness to Pay for Horticulture Insurance:
The case study of Tomato Farmers in Moamba District, Mozambique.

As a former Canadian Toastmaster, I always use the element of surprise in one way or another as an initial attention getter. At times, even to a unilingual English audience, I can use words and expression from French and Spanish with no expectation of anyone in the audience needing to know one word of those languages, especially as they are EMOTIVE or romance languages.
As an example, once the audience is aware that I am a retired electronic technician who is sometimes thought of as "the engineer without the degree", I might start with "The Oscillator Story".
That might well sound as if I am about to give a technical description, but this is far from the case! In reality it is a true story that happened to me some years back, sitting alone thinking about an interpersonal problem.
As I pondered, I realized that that problem is self-perpertuating! That was it! In a matter of seconds in my head alone I transposed all the details of the problem into the equivalent of the electronic engineering of an oscillator, resolved it that way, as if I were that engineer d designing the oscillator, from scratch, then just as fast re-transposed the results back into the interpersonal problem environment and there lay not only the answer to that problem but additionally to many, many more.
Really NOT the technical dissertation one might have expected at the outset!
How was this possible? All the salient elements of both problems were essentially quantitative, NOT qualitative, so mathematics of th e dynamics, therein on both sides were the common denominator which made that, and far more possible.
Some, on reading this might silently think, even at times gritting their very teeth, that I have some very powerfull speaking skills, But when I listen to those who, also having powerful speaking skills, win big competitions, I have no expectations or real belief that such competitions would be worth my entering. Notwithstanding all the "pragmatic" speaking skills therein, I would not elicit the rave popularity it also takes to win such competitions, not wpould I want my success to be beholding to such popularity at the experience of my mettle (and that Shakespearian word has NOTHING to do with Aluminum or steel!
Think, then of your club: would your club want to deal with such mettle in their fold? do you think that if I were to give such a speech as an advanced icebreaker it would be well enough received to result in a successful candidature either for me, or for any other candidate of such mettle?
How would you feel about your club's recruitment philosophy and what, in the longer term that quality of recruitment might bring to your personal desire for a better mettle?
Could you, either to yourself, or to me, or to anyone, think of a club environment that aligns itself wirth such more steadfast mettle and standing of the frey?
Each for each, club for club, the decisions are yours. In the interim, I watch to see what will transpire, not only in Montreal, but globally, given what I can do for the distant online.
