Out of all the ARC tips and tricks videos out there, this was by far the most informative and educational. You are definitely the most knowledgeable of all the TH-cam university professors. I really appreciate all the information you put out.
Thanks Alex!
@@hometheaterguruscan you help me out?
Well technically it's one of the worst. He knows what the buttons do but lacks the theory how to use them correctly and misuse terms.
For example in most cases you are not supposed to use room correction above the room transition frequency that's about 500hz because the mic is omni directional and do not corelate to what the human ear actually hear.
Definitely not correct to 20k, maybe 5k but at your one risk.
That's olso the official recommendation from the anthem team.
You can use eq after the room correction based on your taste
And many more mistakes.
Check out other tutorials.
Thank you! The best video on ARC I have ever seen.
Thanks Bruce!
Just an absolutely stellar video. I had no idea how bad my Arc was setup until I watched this. OMG!!!! What a difference THANK YOU SIR!!!! For all that you do for us DIY guys
Awesome Axe man. Glad it helped!
@@hometheatergurus looking an email address to share an ARC file for your thoughts.
Thank you, thank you! There’s life in my system now. I didn’t realize how much difference there was in… flat vs house curve. The high end was so chopped off before you gave me the courage to challenge the base settings. Most videos typically just talk about the low end. Using Quick Measure to pre-dial in was also a game changer. I experimented with my Axiom M100’s bass ports for tuning. That cured a few dips. Joe K. 🙏🏼
I just came across this last week. I previously let all the ARC settings the way they were and adjusted bass later, basically recommended on the Audio Advice site. Going through the post ARC adjustments explained here GREATLY improved the experience. The whole system came alive in a way I didn’t know possible. I run a 9.4.6 setup, using a miniDSP to first level the subs with the help of REW.
My experience with ARC is that it does not like nulls. Best results for me has thus been when I have had the target curve below the meassured curve (by increasing levels) or limmiting how high up in the freq.range it corrects depending on where the null is.
Thanks for the very detail video. I didn't know we could do much more in Arc. I'm going to try tomorrow night. Appreciate it.
Great video. I learned so much about ARC. When I set a house curve using your example dropping 4db I noticed using Quick Measure the response after setting the 4db drop doesn’t look the same. As an example Left front speaker drops 1/2 db vs my target house curve target drop of 4db. Perhaps it’s the mic position. For Quick Measure I had the mic located at the mlp.
This is an amazing video...THANK YOU! I recently purchased the AVM70 8K to replace my aging Anthem Statement D2V processor. I haven't gotten to the ARC tuning yet because I am still running wires and setting up my new height channel speakers, but as soon as I am ready, I will be coming back to your video to watch for a third, maybe even fourth or fifth time...LOL.
I followed this over the weekend and my system sounds the best it ever has. Why don’t any of the Anthem supported videos cover the level adjustments in each channel before and after upload to the processor?
Awesome! Honestly most of them are in denial it even is an issue. That comes from lack of actually understanding room tuning and understanding how to verify using quick measure or another form of measurment software.
I just got my anthem mrx-1140 and the theater room installer ran the setup and it sounded like shit. I adjusted based on your video and it sounds so much better. Thank you so much for this. Only question is for some reason when I try to run the phase adjustment on the subs it says too much ambient noise. Room is completely quiet
Love the vide. Great job breaking everything down so granular. Looking for help on my measurements. All of my speakers take a deep dive at 5K at about a 45 degree angle and end at about 10K.
Excellent tutorial on using ARC. Thanks for that!
Can’t thank you enough for your time and effort! The negative tilt level was a game changer in my system. FINALLY got my speakers dialed it! Subscribing for future content. 💪🏼
Thanks David and yep a flat target just doesn't sound all that great.
Great video and very informative. I seem to be getting a slight distortion with some songs on my left speaker. Any idea what I can do to fix this?
Really awesome, detailed and thorough. Thanks a lot
You're welcome!
Hey I recently got an AVM 70, loving it and Arc has been awesome, however I have one minor problem, when I want to quick measure my one set of middle in ceiling heights, no sound comes out but it calibrated just fine so I’m not sure what settings I may have wrong
This is very detailed and I picked up some great tips even after setting up many anthem receivers and processors. One question, why are you manually setting levels when the arc room correction does this now?
Thanks Donald. That's explained in the video. We are verifying as we have made tweaks after it set them. Also if you don't tweak anything you should still verify and make adjustments as needed. You should never assume everything ARC or any room correction did is completely without need of verification.
Thank you! Great video. I’m new to this so need some help.
You're welcome. If you need some extra help head over to our FaceBook page with the same name as the channel.
Thank you for your videos. I have a Pioneer 505 with Dirac Live. You can find lots of basic video on how to do a basic calibration, but once you get to the filter design section and upload a house curve that’s where they all quit. This video gave me a lot ideas on how to use the curtains and different functions in Dirac. I had never seen anyone adjust the level of the entire curve for a speaker and then level match it again after uploading the calibration. I’m going to try this on my system when I get some time. I might sit down and watch the second half again before I do it so I fully understand what your doing. Again thank you for all your videos, you really help me building my system and getting the most out of the equipment I have. Evan
Thanks E and so glad my videos have helped you!
One of the best videos I have seen on arc but one thing I struggle with is that the avm 70 sets levels hot in regards to master reference. I’m betting after all this 75db will not be 0db on the volume dial.
In reality we all turn the volume to what sounds right by ear. What matters is that all the channels are level matched and the room sounds fantastic. If it's a tad hot, well that's not worth worrying about. I find i watch content at levels similar to what i've always listened.
Hey! Thanks for the video! Can I still follow along with most of this if I am using the new software from MultEQ-X ??
Hey Ant! Yep the principles are the same. I do have an older video on Audyssey as well.
This video is just awesome! I went ahead and got an Anthem AVM 90 and am LOVING it, and I have to say, I followed your video step by step to get it sounding so good! Thank you so much. One question I had - I agree with you, you don't know what your summed subwoofer output graph looks like in ARC and a MiniDSP with REW is the way to go to get that set exactly the way you want it, but how do you know how to properly Phase Align your subs then with the MiniDSP, like how ARC does this? I know it would be a single virtual sub input only to the AVM 90, but like in my case, not using the MiniDSP, ARC set my 2 subwoofers S1 at 180 degrees and S2 at 75 degrees - it determined that to be the best and it sounds really good. I guess knowing that now, I can manually set that in my SVS PB3000 phone app for each one, and then go the MiniDSP route?
Thanks! You can see both subs in ARC if you use QM to sweep any speaker crossed to the subs. Not ideal but it works. As for phase you can mimic what arc did which is adjusting phase for the best response. For sub to sub alignment you can do how we do in ep 7 or also use phase alignment in REW or old school impulse and make sure the positive humps line up.
I have a MRX 520 that I have corrected nicely based on this awesome video…. But the 520 doesn’t have web interface. When I get my corrections uploaded,no matter what I do with the anthem mobile app, it doesn’t make any changes to SPL levels while running quick level check. Do I shut off ARC in mobile app while I’m trying to level set? All my speakers are at like 67db and I’m frustrated
Why is ARC Genesis still completely wrong regarding the distance of my speakers? What’s wrong with it or what am I doing wrong?
Please, never use Dolby Audio post Processing mode in cinema, music or night mode because in any case, you will compress your sound and harm the overall sound image of your system. If you want to enjoy the real sound of recordings on your Anthem system like post production while benefiting from sound without compression, I recommend that you set the Dolby Audio Post Processing mode to (NONE) and you will be surprised to discover with a few tests everything you lost in sound quality in other modes. Note: In NONE mode you will have to increase the volume by around 8 db but you will see such a difference in sound quality, both in height and width that you will never use these other modes again. I am sure that you will rediscover your Anthem if you listen to this advice because I myself made the mistake for almost a year and since I removed this mode, I finally rediscover my MRX1140 as it should have played from the beginning.
It is set to none. This was just an instructional video and I forgot to set it back to none before i left that screen.
you said you detail eq'd your speakers, what are you using for that? A mini-dsp? or something else?
Good walkthrough. Again, why does ARC not do the level adjustment? Seems like a big deficiency as other room corrections take care of this for you. Also, the phase alignment as a separate step is another annoyance. I don't know, seems like Dirac is a superior experience that does more with less interaction needed.
Dirac is great but needs a quick measure like tool as you can't even see what it's done with out REW etc. Any room correction doing less than full eq needs to be looked at to see how the eq'd response lines up with the non eq'd response. All of them. The phase alignment is at the end as if you were to manually change setting like distance or xover you would need to run phase again so it really needs to be separate and done after you do your thing.
Arc does do level adjustment. Mine did everything after running through the time alignment and phase.
@@azcheron it does for sure but we've changed the target and aligned the non eq'd area with the eq'd so we need to confirm levels at the end as they will need adjusting.
@@hometheatergurus Ahh I see now. So you're saying if you do full EQ then the additional level step is not necessary as ARC will just align with the target?
@@adamjj85 correct. It's only done when we don't do full eq correction.
Hello. I only have 2 atmos ceiling speakers and I hang them over listening position. Do I choose height 1 as front or middle? Thanh you.
Yes, middle
Device Manager USB tip, is this why I have to browse my computer for my downloaded "MIC' file every time I want to measure?
I only have to do this if the PC gets a major update. Once every 6 months maybe. Other than that it finds the mic with no issue, every time. For some reason your pc may not be making the mic active when you plug it in.
Hi, I'm still bothering you.., practically the wi fi seems to be connected, since I noticed that it has made some updates even if I don't know how to see if it is connected😜.
Now I have another problem that I don't understand.
I have the various devices correctly connected to the AVM, and, with the latter turned on.. the connected devices are all regularly activated(Sky, Apple), while when the AVM is off.. in standby, I cannot turn on the devices...?
The CEC is active, but I don't understand why it then turns off the HDMI Bypass🤷🏻♂️.
With the Avm 70 turned on, I turn the devices on and off regularly, but when the AVM 70 is turned off, the devices struggle to turn on.., indeed they don't turn on.
Where should I put my hand?
To calibrate in bass below 15Hz, it’s better to calibrate with REW and miniDSP before applying ARC to finalize and calibration?
Great video I need your help
Why does the Anthem connect when I start a new ARC file, but then the application screen disappears?
I can't understand why I can't get into the ARC file to create.
Thank you.
This video may stop me from selling my 1140. Only had a little time for listening so far, but initial results are night and day
Awesome feedback! Keep that MRX 1140, it's a great AVR. ARC just needs some TLC as all room corrections do.
@@hometheatergurus I honestly didn’t understand how configurable it is. Don’t think it’s properly explained, even on the arc specific website.
Hi HTG, great video, many thanks. When I go,into, quick measures with ARC corrections on, only Fl and FR produce a signal. With AC off, all channels produce a signal. Have you encountered that?
Also, would you kindly look at my corrections and provide some advices?
I'd make sure the anthem is updated and you have the current version of ARC. Hopefully that solves the issue. If not i'd reach out to the vendor you bought it from for support.
@@hometheatergurus how do you respond to house curves, specifically Harmon, when Anthem is dead set against this? I think some of these changes are fine for personal taste, but the video somewhat promotes the changes as standard changes people should make. The reason why ARC defaults cutoff at 5K are because most speaker manufactures voice their speakers in a manner that you shouldn't be changing or you are changing the intended characteristic of that speaker.
@@chuckolson5219 Hey Chuck. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the Harmon target but an accurate speaker should follow close to the harmon target in room, to some degree at least. That's the point of that particular target and you'll notice in the video most of the speakers followed it by nature. In room measurements are not naturally flat as they are 3' from the speaker in an anechoic chamber or outside with no reflections adding to the sound power.
If we eq flat we are absolutely changing the speaker as that is not a natural in room response. This is covered in the video but is also heavily covered throughout decades of studies. This is also covered in the video and explained our intent is not to butcher the source.
BTW while manufacturers claim accuracy few actually deliver. As for where to eq, the video will help you understand where you should eq and that may be 1k or it may require higher than 5k. You don't know until you see what's going on . This is room tuning and what you'd expect any trained calibrator to do. ARC is a very powerful tool and learning to work with it can really take your room to another level.
Thanks for reuploading this! I commented on the original video. ARC recommends setting 2 subs to 72 db each prior to calibration. After I ran ARC, quick measure was reporting 68 db. +7db to the sub trim seems like a lot, should the subs be higher prior to calibration?
Crank it up if you need to. If it's too loud ARC will tell you to turn it down. Also realize if have large peaks before hand that get squashed that can cause the issue as well.
Good information
Thanks
I too am having the same problem with the test signal only in the surround speaker in my 7.1.4 room. So loud I feel it is close to blowing the speaker. I'm running all KEF speakers but the only pair that have a problem are the KEF Ci200RS-THX that are running with 90db sensitivity as the surround speakers. Also using the AVM-70 with 2 Parasound A52+ (180 watts) amps for the surrounds and atmos and A31 for the RCL. All connected with XLR from processor. The AVM is running the latest version of software. I can't seem to power the surrounds down in the AVM to make any difference once it starts running the ARC. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Great video on the topic btw.
Nice video, thank you so much! My main speaker measure fairly flat, do I still need to apply tilt level of -4? This means I need to apply full band EQ to get it to follow the target curve? Thanks
Thanks Sheng, That's up to you but the target is more about what sounds good in room to most people so I'd start there and see how you like it. As discussed in the video a flat speaker will have a natural slope in room.
Thanks for putting this tutorial together. I'm long overdue re-running arc on my setup.
let us know your thoughts once your done! This procedure can make a HUGE improvement!
I am using the STR integrated and when I setup arc for my 2 channel stereo and 2 subs and run the test, Arc can not measure the sup with the current volume and cutoff I use without ARC, I believe it asks me to adjust the sub volume and I have no idea how to adjust that? Can you help with that?
Hello my friend...i am going home nx week to do my new avm90 my question is i am going to follow your info here ,do i disconnect my subs 2x4hd dsp and go direct or use the dsp between the anthem and the subs...happy new year's, and thks for the time you spend to help us all, thks.Elliott
Thanks for watching the channel. This is actually covered in the video but the subs should be aligned in the minidsp for a good seat to seat consistency and eq'd flat to prepare for arc. Happy New Year!'
Happy new years yes with your hepl i aready follow your instructions years ago and love it,now I'm going home to pickup the avm90 and was confuse by othet forum talking about you don't need it anymore but i trust your judgment thks again yeah i save your episode on this til i get home and enjoy your method thks...
Although I have a Denon, its was still worth a lot watching this video, always learning from you.
You mention we target flat response with minidsp for the subs if there is post calibration afterwards, but now with having the Multeq app for Audyssey isn’t it better to a set a rock solid response incl. house curve with minidsp and then disable Audyssey adjustments for the sub channel in the app?
Thanks. You can do that if you want but i like to be able to tweak my house curve and simply load it up without having to physically connect to the minidsp. If you do all the minidsp work and eq flat you're done. You may never need to go back into the minidsp as you can do all of the target work in the room correction software which makes it much easier to play with and tweak.
How your's system wide target is over 80db and mine at 75db in the same screen as you ?
Hello, awesome video thank you
ive set my profile like you show and have set the tilt to -4 however everything above my correction frequency won't follow the curve. I g to speaker levels and try to bring the levels down but when I review them they are still not following the curve and I don't know why. when you do it it shows in your summary page mine does not, does the software work different on a Mac? or am I missing something else? your help would be appreciated as I'm kinda stuck at the moment, thank you
Head over to this anthem page, those guys wills help you out.

Hey, I own an avm 70 and don't understand why I have +6 roomgain - I've moved in the meantime and in the new room I also have +6db roomgain - I measured normally via arc on a Windows PC? My front is measured with about 90db peak and not as in the video with 75db why is that so
Hey there, I was watching your video and noticed your system wide target isn't at 75db but what seems to be 81 or 82. What did you do to move that up and why? Thanks.
Watch the rest of the video and you'll see where we level the speakers. It's the end. It's all explained.
I. Au missed… what is the downside of going at the max for frequency correction?
it's covered in the video. limited filters and the voice analogy.
Heres what i do to make it sound even more awesomeness. For a atmos heavy/flight based/dragon/bullets/heliocopter movie(Black hawk down, John Wick, Maverick) i turn all 6 atmos up to 10 & sides to 7. Man oh man 😂
Yeah... If you need to resort to that you definitely have some "other" issues.
All the dips that seem to be showing at or around 10/11k, are those a Triad thing or room thing? Im asking because I have those SAME dips in all my measurements also and I have Triads.
I made a post on Facebook HTG page to see who wanted their file tweaked on the video and he was the first one to comment. This is his file.
Instead of bumping the speaker trim levels up to 77db for surround and Atmos, would it be better to go into the AVR main zone settings and set surrounds + height to +2db?
That's exactly what we did only the atmos weren't bumped up 2db. Top rear only a db if it's needed.
Can you use enclosed Anthem mic on REW? So you can use it with multiple subwoofer placement?
I haven't tried but i'm sure you could as it's a USB mic, you just wouldn't have the calibration file to make it accurate.
When adjusting targets with tilt and high frequency roll off… don’t you have to put the slider to eq full bandwidth (20k) to actually make that change happen? Just saw a stream with people from audio advice, anthem, Theo and Gene where they said just that.
Yep if the response isn't following it. This is actually covered in this video and mentioned a few times. Pay close attention to the target section where we analyze the response in relation to the target. We even talk about manipulating the eq cut off where we need to to hit the target and where we don't.
@@hometheatergurus gotcha. that was what i initially though as well, but the livestream got me a bit cofused. Thanks for your reply!
@@hypoSTAR I watched it as well. It was a great live stream.
Why did you tilt it? I saw you used tilt, but not sure the rationale.
It's explained in detail in the video.
how do you set height 3's instead of surround backs? Have an MRX 1140 and cant figure it out. I'd like to go 5.2.6
Hey Nate, I cover how to set up the config in the video but i'd highly advise against top 6. Do rears and 4 tops which is far better. The only time I'd recommend top mid is if your top front and rear are already installed and are too far out. Install 4 properly (ep 49) and top mid is actually a down grade. With multiple rows there's other options.
Does HT Gurus provide services for room design?
Only the best designs out there... 😁. See the video description for my email.

My unsolicited response: as a customer, I had outstanding service and outstanding results. No pressure to buy unnecessary products, attempts to save you money where possible, and incredibly helpful. Highly recommended.
@@JH-gi9st With those initials.. hmm.. Is that you Jordan...:). Thanks for the kind words. Joao actually did a consult with me a few weeks ago.
Hi there Guru, my subwoofer and my fronts peak(red line) before Arc adjustment are close to 90db but after Arc it goes back to normal is that ok. Because some forum gurus say that you should never have your peaks that high even before correction and they tell us to put the subwoofer level way down to get rid of those pre Arc peaks. But to me that advise doesn’t sound right as Arc seems to be doing an excellent job bringing those peaks way back to normality. Many thanks.
Yes ARC will knock don't peaks. While no eq can fix nulls peaks they are happy to squash.
So do you use mini dsp on anthem avm90 still?
Yep, it's discussed in the video.
Hi there guru, why is my Rel HT 1205 output is drastically low in output after 90-100hz. This is visible on both quick measure and actual ARC subwoofer readings for subwoofer measurements. Many thanks.
That’s because REL strangely fauve a filter at 120hz so roll off starts around 100hz
Make sure the crossover knob on the back is cranked all the way up to LFE. Keep in mind quick measure is showing you the sub with the Anthems LFE setting (The subs HIgh frequency extension) on so it will roll off like we discussed and set in the video.
Wow very informative. Any chance you’d tweak my arc file if I emailed it to you? Thanks in advance.
Thanks. I'm sorry I don't do ARC tweaks as i just don't have the time. Also some needs to be tweaked in room. If you follow the video heck you don't need me, just follow along.
Is the after results will be same when measured with rew?
yep. My subs looks the same in both.
@@hometheatergurus hi sir, not subs I am asking about full range measurement.
@@myhomeaudio8751 yes it'll measure very very close.
@@hometheatergurus thanks sir, small help, I have a bad response from 80-500hz, like lot of dips and peaks, how can I solve this?
Question, at what position do you set your microphone for phase alignment and quick measure? main listening position or in the center?
I place it where you took measurement 1 which is usually the center of the listening area. If you only care about one seat then place the mic where those VIP ears are.
@@hometheatergurus 🙏🏼 thank you
Did I miss the bit about if you have a MiniDSP and want to keep the house curve you've created in that, to be implemented within ARC?
Easiest way is to limit the correction freq for your subs in ARC to say 80Hz , then any signal /EQ below that will be 'raw' and should follow the same curve you've created in REW/miniDSP.
yeah you missed it. It's in there in the last part of the target setup section.
I have a Anthem MRX-510 and I'm pretty sure I have to manually input the speaker distances. Has this changed or does it only apply to the newer models.
Hey RP. Update the Anthem and make sure you have the newest version of ARC. As seen in the video Anthem now does this and actually has for quite a while.
X10 and X20 series products don’t have auto phase or delay measurements they need done manually. Only the x40 series and avm70/90 and STR products have auto phase and distance/delay
wait, you running automatic phase adjustment BEFORE or AFTER upload to device?
Doesn't matter as it uploads itself after you run it.
After the most recent update, my MRX requires the ARC file to be uploaded before it will do Auto Phase Adjustment.
@@JH-gi9st so was i, upload arc first before run auto phase mngmnt
Do you recommend adjusting levels for the subs via the "set speakers level" tab or should we stick with turning up or down the levels of the subs using only ROOM GAIN and DEEP BASE BOOST?
That depends on if you want to adjust the curve of the sub or adjust the level of the sub as a whole. It's discussed in the video.
I may have missed it, but before running ARC and using QM, how or where do you set your db’s to? The highest PEAK set to or below 75db like some say, or just set overall db reading to 75-78db, and then run ARC?
@@Lazarus.09 if you mean subs you don't have to. Arc will tell you to adjust the subs if they aren't in the correct start range.
@@hometheatergurus yes sir! That’s what I was meaning, sub(s) wise. Thank you!
Does anybody have a good advice for the Paradigm Founder 120H? Trying to figure out the correct crossover frequency for the front and subs, considering the 120h can handle the sub frequencies…
they can, but not as well as a good dedicated sub(s). mine are crossed over at 80hz to XR13s. Let your ear decide. 120H are great on their own, but with sub(s) they are even better
I see you have the avm70, if you had 4 subs, would you recommend the avm90? If avm70 would you daisy chain or use a mini dsp?
Always use a minidsp. You need to do it manually to see the subs to make sure they're properly placed and aligned. No room correction can fix bad placement.
Is there a version with xlr inputs to go from the anthem? Assume the HD version so you get 2 vrms?
@@oncrx you'd want the flex balanced. It uses trs.
@Home Theater Gurus awesome looks very good on audio science review. So would I get this and be able to eq with REW or would I also need or want to get the dirac license for it. Assume to place subs optimally then eq then run through ARC as last step?
@@oncrx see ep 7. Its all manual. You align, eq flat and hand off to arc.
Great video! Thanks! Some questions:
1. I currently have a Marantz AV7705 and 4 subwoofers. I use a miniDSP 2x4 HD. I'm thinking of upgrading my processor. Will a processor with 4 subwoofer outputs preclude the need for a miniDSP? It would be nice to simplify things if I didn't need a miniDSP if the processor already has 4 subwoofer outputs. For example, the AVM 90 has 4 sub outs and the new Marantz AV10 has 4 sub outs (it only supports Audyssey and DIRAC Live at this time). In the future (next year) the Marantz might support Dirac Bass (DLBC). So, will I still need a miniDSP with these processors or with DLBC? I'd hate to spend more $$ and still need a miniDSP.
2. I use an acoustically transparent screen. So, would it be better to use full frequency EQ instead of limiting to 5Khz?
Thanks.
IMO you still need the minidsp. Room correction doesn't let you see if the subs are properly placed, properly aligned for a good seat to seat. If you have subs misplaced or room correction doesn't get the delay right, you'd never have a clue.
Thanks for informations !! Have you a e-mail or other for send arc file ? Don't sûre of my correction
Way too much detail - I wish you would just stick with the Home Theater basic setup. You are all over the place and it is very annoying.
This isn't a basic video and it's not meant to be. This is for those wanting to get more from their systems. It takes some learning on your part and patience to understand it. Most that are into a hobby want to learn. If you read the comments you'll see many have used this and achieved far better sound. You're the first to complain it's not basic. An depth ARC video was requested heavily for over a year before I had to time to make it.
Hes going into more complicated adjustments. There is actually more detail that could have been discussed which I know Steven knows but probably left out for the sake of the already long video length. Audio Advice has a nice ARC video for those looking for a basic overview.
