Manufacturer's mark ups. A £500 bike with £1000 worth of motor & battery sells for £2,500. Pure greed.

People need credit to buy ebikes because they are expensive as you have stated. However, credit is expensive and this slows down ebike sales. therefore you are correct in saying ebike prices should come down a bit.

Most are overpriced, overpowered monstrosities. Big motors need big batteries. Fancy custom frames are also unnecessary. Old bike frames are dirt cheap - 350w kits and 300wh batteries are affordable. I've been ebiking for 8 years in a hilly area.. that is all you need.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Hope we will get some priceworthy ebikes in the market soon.

They are already there. Ancheer and others are good ebikes and priced lower than a lot of people pay for non-ebikes. But buying a decent older bike and installing a kit is an even better option. If you can do the most basic bike maintenence, you can install an ebike motor / battery kit. Batteries are the most expensive part but they pay for themselves in transportation savings over time. @@eBikeInspection

I went cheap for my son's, who is in college, first ebike. A $360 Ancheer MTB but cost me $170 to ship. If it gets stolen, it would not hurt much. :)

For light use, cheap options are better.
But are you sure it won't hurt that much?

@@eBikeInspection actually, it would. The accessories like the locks, side mirrors, cell holders, plus his safety gear have all added up to more than the price of the bike itself. Good thing is he can take the bike inside his dorm room.
BTW, i bought a $50 (returned item) Walmart Mongoose MTB 20 yrs ago that i still use up to now. A few years later i bought a $250 Schwinn from Target and that got stolen.
