    Just a wee correction, the Zoe used to come with only AC charging not Chademo. Be careful, some later cars also only had AC charging. Also worth noting that the Seat version of the E-Up only had the top trim level, so no poverty model. Re the old Model S, I've got a March 2016 Model S 85D (free supercharging) with 264,000 miles on it and I'm only just starting to replace the suspension arms. Not because they are failing but because I figured they must be pretty tired by now. And for those that say you can't do long journeys in EVs, in the last 9 months I've travelled to France, Southern Italy, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Great to see that these cars are getting more affordable, the running coats are very low.

      Made a comment about the transfer of free supercharging , can you help in anyway. • @willdashwood82
      @willdashwood82 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@smburc1 My understanding is that the free supercharging for life only gets removed if the car is sold back to Tesla or if you take them up on their offer of transferring free supercharging to a new Tesla, which I don't believe requires you to sell your old car to them. I've also heard of situations where if the car doesn't call home within 6 months, it can be removed, but that's more for people buying written off cars. I bought my 2016 85D from my boss, so it was a private sale, and the free supercharging carried over to me.

      @@Mububban23 Absolutely! For me, the generation of cars that includes the EV6, Mach-e and so on were the first that were truly interesting to me. The Tesla model 3/y were, and are, great cars but it never quite landed for me personally in terms of styling and such. So having all of these options available is perfect!
      I personally did buy an extended range mach-e about a year or so ago now, and I've been really happy with how it's handled long distances, as well as it just being fun to zoom off the line 😀 Around 220 miles, real world motorway, range in winter and about 270-300 miles in summer puts it into the spot where even for long distance trips (e.g. midlands to cornwall, or midlands to scotland) are more limited by our desire to a break in general (and if there's a destination charger, we wouldn't technically need to stop at all).
      But, of course, that's something the car does roughly once a month. Most of our journeys are much shorter, and never having to faff with a petrol station is so nice :)

      Have to agree - 2.5 yers ago I went for a PHEV as BEVs just too much for decent range and charge speed. Just swapped for a BEV - Hyundai Kona 64kWh with just a few £k to pay. Says 250 miles on a full battery and I can believe it. Had my first long trip (190 miles each way) and it was a breeze. Dive in now if you've been considering an EV!

    So often I hear people saying “EV depreciation is going to kill EV adoption, blah, blah”. My response is always “You are saying having used EVs cheaper than their gas counterparts on lots is going to HURT EV adoption???” Cheap used EVs is EXACTLY what we need to get more people driving electric!

    • @iainw5081
      @iainw5081 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Does not work that way as its an 'ecosystem' of interconnected players. The depreciation is now more than likely driving price discounts to cost of production or even below that in a futile attempt to move ballooning inventory. This means that not only EV manufacturers take a loss but also buyers along with car hire and vehicle leasing companies. A slow motion train wreck is occurring. The government imposed EV 'market' is flawed like Soviet central planning.

    • @TheComfiestChair
      @TheComfiestChair 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Is this quite true, though? The deprecation we're seeing doesn't seem too dissimilar to other more expensive cars, like a 3 series. A mach-e being 45-50% down after just over 3 years is a bit higher than you may find in ICE cars in a similar price bracket, but not massively so.
      Considering this is also rapidly evolving tech, and smart charger owners generally save at around a rate of £1.5k per 10k miles vs a 40mpg car (7p per kWh smart charging with Octopus vs. 140p petrol), a slightly higher deprecation works out fine for owners and seems reasonable for first gen tech!
      And going back to the deprecation difference- if you drive the car about 30k miles you've likely clawed back much of the gap to something similarly priced and specced. Although that's obviously somewhat difficult to specify since todays EVs are often much faster, and have a completely different set of tradeoffs that can make them either much better than an ICE, or much worse - e.g. if you can't home charge or travel 500 miles a day and prioritise overall time over saving thousands a year)
      What feels like a bigger barrier to EV growth right now is not having the more mainstream models available, or space to have a home charger. Most people aren't buying cars north of £40k and we won't have commonplace 5-10 minute rapid charging for a couple of years yet (18 minute for 350 miles is the quickest I've heard of, but it's always evolving).
      But these used prices? That's the good stuff, and is making the good EVs affordable to more people.

    • @glennv3176
      @glennv3176 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      The EU did a survey with EV owners, the vast majority does not intend to ever buy an EV again. So 'getting people to drive electric' is a temporary thing, they go back to a real adult human car afterwards.

    • @glennv3176
      @glennv3176 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do support forced electrification though, because people without private garages, about 95% of the world, poor people, they won't own cars anymore, owning an EV is not feasible without a private garage. Get tho poors off the road, poors take the bus. At first I was not on board with the EV cult, until someone explained to me you just want poor people off fckin road, now I'm on board. If you don't live in a mansion with at least one private garage, you can't own a car or go anywhere, haha.

    • @TheComfiestChair
      @TheComfiestChair 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @glennv3176 This is also why I noted don't think EVs are suitable for mass adoption until they can rapid charge in comparable time to petrol (at current rates of progress, we'll hopefully see that in about 4-5 years) so you don't need space at home to charge :) Likewise drop in replacement synthetic fuel is going to be critical for a global transition away from traditional fuels.
      That all being said (from a UK perspective) if public transport anywhere but London could suddenly be great to not need a car, that'd be pretty great... But, welp, I can't see that happening any time soon.

      I'm not the original poster, but I also use an EV (a Hyundai Ioniq5) to tow a caravan (Swift Basecamp 2). EVs make great tow cars because they tend to be relatively heavy, have a long wheelbase and lots of torque. As long as I don't go silly (it's easy to tow at speed) and stick to the UK speed limits when towing we get about 120 miles on a charge. That compares to 200 miles without the caravan. That's enough for most trips but when it comes time to change I think I will go for a car with the charge port near the front. Having it at the back means I sometimes have to unhitch to charge en route. The Hyundai does have V2L though, meaning we can run the caravan from the car. We have done it, and it uses surprisingly little battery, but it's not something we need regularly.

    • @Smidge204
      @Smidge204 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Temperature also plays a significant role. Yes, spending a lot of time at max SoC is bad, but spending time at max SoC while hot is double extra bad. This is why the LEAF specifically has a bad reputation for degradation while other vehicles do not... the difference is the thermal management.

    • @gregb1599
      @gregb1599 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      And yet with the so called best battery the BYD Blade which has LFP and liquid cooling still rapid gates badly, the early Leaf did degrade fast, but the 40 and 62kwh Leaf batteries are holding their own against most liquid cooled batteries, losing 15% in 6 years is still very impressive to me. Especially when Tesla Model 3 I have seen a 2021 example at 87% battery health with 50,000 miles.

    • @Smidge204
      @Smidge204 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gregb1599 @gregb1599 15% in 6 years? Which car are you referring to? Checking the Cinch website I only see a 2016 model in white, 24kwh pack, with an original range of 84 miles. If we assume it's the same car despite being red, and 50miles is really what you'd get at 100%, that's a 40% loss not 15%.
      Capacity loss due to thermal problems was a HUGE deal early on. Do you remember when Nissan started with the "Lizard" pack with the chemistry tweak for 2015+ models, sold only for warmer climate markets? That's because people in Arizona were already making battery warranty claims due to capacity loss.
      The "rapidgate" thing is software to protect the battery. It may or may not be strictly necessary but that's what the manufacturer wants. The LEAF will absolutely roast its battery on multiple DCFC sessons in the same day. The term "batterygate" was coined by LEAF owners before anyone outside China even heard of BYD.
      At the end of the day it all depends on how it's used and abused. 15% loss in 6 years? Sure, possible, if you're careful. But a proper thermal management system will absolutely suffer more abuse and last longer than a pack without one. No question.

      My ten year old Model S still retains 90% of its original SOC. sadly, other makes, like the Nissan Leaf are the complete opposite and will typically only retain as little as 30% or less after the same period of time and miles driven.
      The most important thing to pay attention to is the vehicle’s BMS, thermal management, and chemistry. Or just go with the obvious. Tesla’s batteries are easily at the top with regards to longevity and reliability, with more of their vehicles on the road than any other, worldwide. And there’s several reasons for that, battery quality being one of them.

Its also too new for DIY work arounds and cheap alternative parts, so you are dependent on the dealer, thus a failed AC compressor will set you back 3 grand - such a part for an older car would cost 250 quid. I think the ID3 will make a great old banger choice for the DIY mechanic when they are 10 years old but as a nearly new car they are very expensive. Oh and the dealer network cant cope so you wait months for any repair. To add to the fun, if you have to buy your 15 grand UK price car in the EU it will be over 20 grand.

      @@AnonYmous-rw6un - Depends upon circumastances, destination charging (particularly at work) allows adoption. Similarly in areas with steetside charging or community charging - such as at new developments in the last few years (including flats) - support shared 'home' charging. Access to local low cost public charging (e.g. supercharger or supermarket chainging) also means it's still cost effective (even more so if the public charging vat rate is dropped to the domestic energy rate). One estimate is that the 60 to 70% with some form of home charging extends to 80% when including localised charging. For this segment BEVs will become more an more attractive.
      The final 20% is the harder to address segment, some of which (primary terrace housing) could be addressed by gully charging (packages of chargers and low profile secure cable gullys for on street charging). The remainder (older flats etc) forms of community access charging are being looked into. Though for this segment running a BEV, whilst still cheaper than a ICE car, will not be as cheap as those with home charging nor as easy to manage.

      @@xWood4000 - or buy it on PCP but only when the rates are dirt cheap, if car drops value just hand it back. Plus negotiate hard for discount incentive, service package and add-ons. With BEVs this makes sense as it's a good way of accessing higher range cars that save more on everyday usage (though pick those with good efficiency rather than vanity/halo models).
      The high depreciation experienced at the moment is a transistional shift event, reflecting the drop in battery prices that new EV's prices have yet to reflect - the majority of EV models were sold till now have been high value, high spec, high premium cars that have had the most to loose. As more affordable new models start to become the majority then depreciation will not be so marked as it is now.
