There are nine spare, simple songs on Julien Baker's debut album, Sprained Ankle, and every one of them is sad. In fact, she came to the Tiny Desk with an untitled new one - since given the name "Funeral Pyre" - and she appropriately introduced it as "Sad Song #11." But Baker's shimmering electric-guitar picking, the purity of her voice and the yearning way she sings make each of her songs lovely and memorable rather than merely somber. She takes raw emotions and weaves them into perfect bits of memorable poetry like this, from the song "Good News":
In the thin air my ribs creak
Like wooden dining chairs when you see me
Always scared that every situation ends the same
    With a blank stare
For fans of Torres, another Tennessee musician, there's a similar intensity to that electric guitar and lonesome sound. But unlike the intensity Torres unleashes with her voice, Baker lets her words carry the volume. It's a tone that lulls you into her world and has me eagerly anticipating "Sad Song #12" and beyond.
    Sprained Ankle is available now.

    "Something"

I feel like there is an aesthetic to her music that has been missing from "indie" music for awhile. The soft heartfelt sadness of her songs kind of reminds me of how the indie scene was in the 2000's with Bright Eyes, Death Cab, Rilo Kiley, Tegan and Sara, Sufjan, ect.

    • @LeviWarnos

      +Ducky
Indeed. When I discovered Keaton's performance, it rocked me to the core. I can still remember the shower I took with his voice and vibrations soothing my confused, bruised, and battered thoughts and soul, crying to depths that I refuse to touch or release, almost to the point of absurdity after certain family deaths, close friends and community elders, often very tragic/strange/close knitted circumstances.
I was in the trenches; I also had gone through a nearly 3-year break up the July prior (2014). Then, some time later, it was the first major winter blizzard in Michigan's Upper Peninsula - the white, muted, endless landscape outside and in my mind that I had to face to survive... I can remember the wind howling outside the bathroom window of the cabin my parent's rented for the weekend that we hunkered down in... the soothing steam and my gnarled spine, the stone of the floor where the water pooled and drained, the lyrics that said what I couldn't so perfectly, that in ways both generally and specifically paired frighteningly close with my life and my struggle with expressing what, in many ways, seemed surreal, for it was all too real.
Like how my parent's struggled to listen to their poetic graduate student son and his newest venture in 'Spiritual Writing or the Lack Thereof', confronting his deepest fears and anxieties for 4 credits, trying to make sense of anything in the wake of loss and unsaid words and clenching regret that still, at times, haunts or follows me two years later (not simply spiritually or metaphorically, but physically, too), while C-Span debated and droned, reading speeches about ISIS, some new threat, and Captain Kirk and the original Khan (not Benedict Cumberbatch, but a sexist in tune with the tone of the times) met on the adjacent channel.
My life, or my perception of what is mine and more, has been strange and skewed as any or few. His music helped me heal and grieve so much. I wanted to show my mother 'Nests', but never have. Simply put, I'm so thankful for people like this, when I run out of words.

8 or 9 years ago, I met Julien at a friend of mines studio in Atoka, TN. My brother had somehow became acquainted with her and realized her talent and got her to track a 5 song demo at our friends studio. She did the whole thing live, in one take. She's a beast! We were all blown away from her seemingly, effortless display of raw, talent. She was the first artist to help expand my musical pallet and introduce me to indie music. I listened to that demo for the longest time on my ipod. Time had separated me from this artists work. I am so glad that she is getting the recognition she has deserved for years!

    • @TheBeardSupreme
      @TheBeardSupreme ปีที่แล้ว +22

Yep. That’s it. You nailed it perfectly. She picks out the strands from sorrow that are the most crystalline and reflective and she spins them into something close to pure euphoric release. It’s all so brittle but unbreakable, and the sounds that pass her lips meld with the sounds from her fingertips and they all become instant monuments to every feeling she’s ever felt, monuments of perfect glass that will stand forever, tall and unyielding, never losing their light.

She came through Omaha a few weeks back, a friend and I managed to get tickets, got there super early and actually stood there as she hopped out of her tour van and walked down the street not even two feet from the two of us. We got into the venue (The Waiting Room Lounge) as soon as we could and got right up to the stage. The opening band I forget, but they were a super chill folk group. Then when Julien came on stage, after the initial applause, the silence in the room as she performed was absolutely stunning. She sometimes would step away from the mic and wouldn't come through the PA, but we were close enough that we could hear her natural voice as she just poured her heart into her music. It was an absolutely breathtaking show, one that I wish I could see again. Unfortunately, it's almost made me not want to listen to her recordings, because the live show was so absolutely good. After the show my friend and I hung around for a while, she came out and my friend actually managed to get her signature and a few pictures with her, I was super jealous because I couldn't get in for anything. Julien actually did recognize my friend, though, from both outside of the venue and from actually talking to her during the show.
Jeeze, this is rambly as fuck but I needed to say it. TL:DR Julien's shows live are so fucking awesome, if you ever get the chance to see her, do it, you will most definitely not regret it.

That Red Panda I had a similar experience with Daniela Andrade. I was front and center, stood outside waiting for the doors to open for four hours. I was third in line. Her manager came out a few times and was impressed we were all waiting in what was maybe 40°F weather. He asked if we wanted to meet her and take pictures and I sort of just babbled when she came out and got a few pics with her. I’ll never forget the natural timbre of her voice. It was a bit changed by the mic and all but she had a very good sound guy so the two were pretty identical. But that open sound that just engulfed her surrounding and me being perhaps 7 feet away. It’s something I’ll never forget.
This is the first I hear of her and I can tell I’d have similar experience if I saw her live.

Well, yes and no. Those shotgun microphones do solve the problem of cutting out anything coming from the sides, but through the same effect they cut out the reflections of the vocalist's own sound, including the low-frequency "help" those reflections bring due to room effects. This leads to all voices on NPR sounding sort of "body-less" and "dry". But the rest sounds great, I can agree with that.

I met Julien back in August, she played an amazing show, joked around and told a few stories, I waited around after the show then just as I was told to leave, she came out to meet the fans. I was lucky enough to get my album signed and even a hug! I often come back and watch this performance, it was the first time I’d heard Julien and I haven’t heard anything close since. Her music, and this performance specifically, brings me back to a real complicated time in my life, but not in a bad way. I look back at this performance and think of how much I’ve grown as a person since first discovering her, and I can’t wait to grow more now that I have her music to accompany me. Thank you, Julien.

I first caught Julien opening with The National at the Belly Up in Aspen over New Years. I was just completely leveled. And I mean completely. I cried. The last time I cried was holding my small daughter years earlier while watching a Carl Sagan video that just buried me in beauty. We got a chance to talk. I was so moved I think I paid double for her album and asked for her signature and a photo. I think she said "Really?" when I asked to get my photo with her. I'll be seeing her 3 more times this summer and I even managed to book one of the 3 for my own place. :)

The painful learning that life is harder than you'd thought it would be, that people will let you down harder than you'd ever thought. She articulates the losing of that innocence we all felt at 18 or 20.

Now I find Julien Baker and with her how wrong I was. She reminds me of that 12-year-old me..., she's far better obviously, but her voice and feelings that she shows are quite similar to mine.
