I appreciate the interviewer for not trying to cut Julien short in her answers. Hearing her express herself with such authenticity was the best part of this video.
@@eenfx That's sad to hear. I've seen many of the other interviews he done and he's always amazing (yes, I'm aware that I'm replying to a 2-yr old comment)
Finally and gladly coming back to this after many years. This performance was on repeat for me while my father was in the last stages of early onset dementia. Many nights the wife and kids were asleep and I was up listening to this, headphones on and tears rolling, reminiscing about the better times with my father. 'Go Home' cut deep as he also, was trapped and unable to have the freedom he once enjoyed. He is now free and I come back here to both enjoy the music and remember how harsh life can be. Much love.
When she reacts to her favorite literature being referenced and she geeks out for a minute, then draws back in because she feels exposed. That is what past pain does to you. I'm grateful for her wonderful music because it's relatable, but god, I wish no one has to feel that pain.
it's a shame artists like her don't get a bigger push because this is otherworldly special...such a talent. I came across this show by accident and am completely blown away by these lyrical, personal, passionate songs...she bleeds them. incredible...thank you
I clicked on this video on a whim about three years ago - I wish I had a way to track down the exact date I first clicked on it, but it was for sure in March/April. It saved my damn life, I'm not exaggerating. I've seen Julien live three times since, was lucky enough to meet her one time, and I'm such a different person than I was then. I still struggle, but I have the knowledge now that I can count on Julien Baker's music whenever I need to take a minute to just breathe. It has never failed to soothe me, and I owe an awful lot of the last few years to the gift her music continues to give me. My fondest memories involve the friends I made through her music, and as the sun starts to poke its head out for the first summer I get to spend in Canada, I can't help but get emotional about the fact that I'm here to enjoy that because of Julien Baker.
she is so cool..completely honest, unpretentious, great chops all around. Everything she does is coming from a place so vulnerable it's almost hard to watch her. She's an original, a fierceness and a passion that belies her adorable self. Love ya, babe.
I know the songs are all individually listed by AudioTree, but if you are here because you don't want to click separate videos, here's the set list: 0:35 - Sprained Ankle 10:35 - Rejoice 19:38 - Something 26:30 - Go Home
Everyone should honestly watch the whole thing. Very insightful in so many ways. I'm amazed at how wise she is and how well she gets her thoughts across.
This is incredible. Her reaction at the end of her last song seemed like she was lost in the moment. Like she forgot there were people there and then you can visually see her come back to the room. This is why I love music. Thank you Julien Baker!
Listening to these specific songs used to make me cry… I was in a bad place. I have been in a mental health facility for 5 weeks now and I have finally learned to love myself. These songs mean so much more now and are so much more profound. Thank you JBakes- I love you!!!!
May i recommend also trying to turn depression into anger. Then study jewish history, or western history with heavy interest on israel, mafias, finance and the big j.
Whats hollywood do to talented girl like julien is mess her up, remember how taylor swift change? The list goes on. Im sure majority of his fans will be happy enough with her current situation, the record she signed with seems decent and the people surrounding her including youtube channels like audiotree, tinydesk they are decent people. This is whats made talented indie bands and hollywood bs different.
I love that she just belted out "Rejoice" in a crazy amazing way that is as good as any singer Ive ever heard, and then she talks about maybe being a teacher, when everyone who just heard that knows that she is about to be one of the best singer songwriters of our time!
I always come back to this, the first time I ever found her. Since then, I've seen her live (she shook my hand and really enjoyed my british accent), and her music gives me the confidence to continue making my own, among other things. I don't know who to thank for Julien Baker other than Julien Baker, but SERIOUS thanks are in order
"Are you talking about canon literature? I nerdily love canon literature!" I'm an English teacher, and so, so happy to hear someone say this on the air.
so beautiful, thanks. "Go Home" snuck up on me as my surprise favorite off the record. she's so much more clear-headed than I was at 20 and I loved hearing her thoughts in between the music.
She's just so beautiful in every sense of her body and soul, the way she sings, the way she speaks, the way her fingers even touch every string from the guitar or every key of the piano. She is truly an open and natural artist. She is pure and clear art, and I've never come across someone like that. I'm not even talking like in the way of how she is from the aspect of an artist, I'm talking about just as a person. Nobody is like her.
I remember about 4 or 5 years ago when Julien had one of her first shows with The Star Killers at Memphis music and she was JUST AS ENCHANTING. Man, Its beautiful to see her blow up. Kudos Julien Baker, you give hope to us at Smith7.
thank you so much Julian Baker, the end has me sobbing so hard, her music is truly a gift, it means so much to me. I also just love the interview so much.
Oh my god man... reading your comment realising it was exactly 3 in the morning for me too and I just went through the same process brough me back to tears. Powerful
Julien, I don't know if you read the comments here but I want you to know that your music has found me in a terrible, dark and isolating time in my life and when I first heard "Home" a few days ago, I sobbed with relief and emotion because I thought I was the only one feeling these things. You turned something so painful into something beautiful and you have carried me through many nights just listening to your songs on repeat when I feel scared and alone. Thank you for creating art that is so raw, because by doing so you have made such a huge difference in my life. All my light and love to you ♡
The expression in 30:04 defines what I feel every time I listen to this song... I love it with all my heart, but it seems to reach parts of Julien's history so deeply that it hurts her. As somebody else said, sometimes it is hard to watch - as much as it is magnificent. I met Julien a few months ago at a gig, and she wasn't in a good place. I hope she's ok now. I have never adored an artist as I do with Julien, not only for her exquisite talent but because she's honest and vulnerable like few humans are courageous enough to be.
Love this recording. Came across Julien during the Boygenius hype that was everywhere. Such a beautiful voice, lyrical master and multi instrumentalist. By far my favourite artist in Boygenius and that's saying something as both Lucy and Pheobe are amazing artists. After getting to know Julien's discography I noticed I'd actually been listening to her for years, one of my favourite bands is Frightened Rabbit and not only was Julien a 'featuring' artist on How it gets in, but Julien also contributed to the Tiny Changes album, covering Modern Leper and covering it so well, I almost prefer it to the origional. Julien also attributes the honesty in her lyrics being a result of listening to Scott Hutchison's lyrics.
Not typically into this sort of super soft, relaxed, indie singer/songwriter type of music. Nothing against it, just doesn't usually hold my attention. But something about Julien Baker just works for me. Hearing her say "I used to be in a metalcore band, and we'd play covers of like The Devil Wears Prada and stuff" was crazy, cuz I first heard of her when Prada cover *her* song, Sour Breath. I thought it was such a great song, and really fit with the vibe of the band, especially during that album cycle. So I checked out the original, and was surprised at how different it was, yet how similar it felt to the cover. And then watching her performances and just hearing her talk, she seems like the most down to earth, genuine person. Like, she's not trying to prove anything or pretend to be anything other than herself when she's performing.
This is my favorite video on TH-cam. I am not kidding. This music in this video is art in it's own right, but the performances of these songs take on a new layer of meaning in relation to her thoughtful answers. This is the best video. More views here please. Thanks.
I just can't get over how much i love Julien's music, it is so incredible and authentic and i just connect with it on a level that is just really comforting to feel and be at. So grateful to have art like this to make my days worth while .
I have know of Julien's work for a while now and I have to it for a while too but only recently have I realised how much I understand the words she is making sound so lovely. rejoice specifically. i started listening to that particular song a lot more recently and its just perfect in my eyes, all of her music is.
I totally know what you mean! I cannot get enough of her. I've listened to every podcast she's been on and I hope she's invited to do more podcast interviews
The more I see and hear from this beautiful young lady the more impressed I am. So very refreshing! Her humility is such a rarity in the cut-throat world that she now presides. The music is heartwarming as well as enlightening. God bless you, Julien!
I know how you feel. Personally, I'm glad she's gay, because, if she were straight, I'd feel like a dirty old man in admitting I've fallen totally in love with her.
She is a credit to herself. Very accomplished as a musician and an artist at such a young age. I really need to think more about what I want to do with my life...
It's crazy. She was what... 19/20 in this performance? Way better spoken than I am in my late twenties and so open and vulnerable. What I found the most astonishing was her musical experience though. All those bands and shows she had already played in at that point, that was insane to me.
I have found her just yesterday and I haven't been able to listen to anything else since. She feels like the realest person I have ever seen. Her music makes me feel raw and I cry every time I hear it, but at the same time I can't stop listening.
Go Home is one of the most melancholic songs I've ever heard. That's coming from a Steven Wilson fan, haha. So heart-wrenching and beautiful. Julien Baker is a treasure.
Which means you've got just about 71 more hours before you collapse in an extreme Julien Baker music binge exhausted, but massively thrilled, heap. Hope it's your weekend!
Woooooow... What an absolute pro. Look at that effortless playing and last-second tuning at the end of 'Something.' Damn. That schooling in technical skill really shows. Even doing a check for the sound crew before starting. Automatic professional move. And so wonderfully humble! Amazing performer. Absolutely amazing.
Is it odd to say I enjoyed the conversation in between as much if not maybe more so sometimes than the actual music? What a lovely young lady bless you be well.
I appreciate the interviewer for not trying to cut Julien short in her answers. Hearing her express herself with such authenticity was the best part of this video.
I agree....
love the extended conversations
The best part of Julien is Julien
I wish that guy was still as patient as he is here, I think he's really rude in the soccer mommy set

Much love.
I love how she's so tiny and delicate, yet her lyrics are so strong and dark. Especially "Go Home". She's awesome.
agreed! 100%, less is more dude... less is so much more...+Alex H
Go Home, Something and Rejoice are so powerful, I love her voice
This is how I discovered some of the most important songs in my life. Thank you Audiotree. Loved Blake as a host.

I could listen to Julien just talk about everything for hours.
She should do podcasts
I was just going to make a similar content so instead I’ll just add a “ditto”
She seems very intelligent
Same here. She's a beautiful person. Inside and out.
Julien is lovely
I’m always gobsmacked by how Julien sustains that power at the end of rejoice, amazing

Rejoice hits me so fucking hard..
Mark of a talented artist. I think Something is golden personally. Rejoice is fantastic also though!
every. fucking. time.
Her singing 'rejoice' is the most beatiful thing I've seen in a while.

Rejoice blew me away absolutely

So cool coming back to this 7 years later and hearing such a great tone from classic pedals like the DL4 and Echo Park.

i'm in love. this is one of those youtube vids that you wished was longer. could listen to her for hours.
I discovered Juliens music 8 years ago and I haven't listened to this song in about 3 years until this year. I'm glad we're all choosing to stay.
she is way too adorable
I've watched this session like 10 times and I only now realized that "I was used to touring, but in a suburban" meant she toured in a van
I just bought her album Sprained Ankle, and it was totally amazing. Thank you Audiotree for getting me hooked.
i love how she nerds out over literature. a lot of great songwriters do the same. zeppelin referenced LOTR all the time.
