Bruce Campbell has a similar piece of advice in his memoir If Chins Could Kill, talking about being offered an audition for the role of Smitty in The Hudsucker Proxy by the Coen Brothers - he said he was happy to take the part, but said no to the audition, because at that point the Coens had known him for at least a decade and should really know whether they wanted him for the role or not. He was then offered the part without the audition. "No is the most powerful word in the Hollywood dictionary. Use it wisely, and it can be liberating - use it too much and you'll starve."
That's a great book book. It's a great book about Campbell, and a great book about what it's like to be a working actor.
He's burying the lead: the very next film Hanks said "yes" to after that "lightening bolt" moment was "Philadelphia." He won his first Oscar for the role.
To me that was the turning point in his career. Before that he was seen mainly as just a comedic actor (I actually love that portion of his career in the 80's but I digress). Once Philadelphia came out people realized this one of the greatest actors of our generation. After that it was all she wrote - Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, and on and on it went.
Love the Play Tone sweatshirt! That Thing You Do! Very under rated
That’s a fun film. I grew up in Pennsylvania in the ‘60s and I LOVED the sets and musical gear. And of course Liv Tyler 😍
I'm a big fan of that movie. It was also Hanks' directorial debut.
Just got the soundtrack… first time it’s been released on vinyl from Mondo… it’s great
Playtone is also his film and television production company
So down to earth, and he is such a brilliant superstar! Love him.
I'm sorry, did he just make a legitimate Marvel reference "Black Bolt Speaks"?
I didn't know you was chill like that Mr Hanks...
Haha yessirrrr ⚡️
i was stunned on hearing that reference too
I noticed that too!
You heard it too??
Hanks is so embedded in the American psyche, it it hard to imagine a favorite movie without him being in it. My personal Hanks favorites are: 1)Saving Private Ryan 2) The Green Mile 3) Forrest Gump. But there are so many others. To be honest, he's been in so many movies, I wonder how he's even had time for a private life, even though I know he has. I'm so old I still remember his first role, playing in drag! (How many of you remember THAT?)
Bosom Buddies! Remember it well…
It’s wise advice in some ways. And applies to most careers. In the business world I used to be afraid to turn down any opportunities for promotion or lateral moves that leaders thought I needed for advancement. But now I can say “no” to what I feel isn’t a good fit and make sure I hit a home run on the ones I agree to take.
I remember in another interview he'd said he'd told his managers at one point "No more man-child roles for me." That's a confident professional plotting their course rather than just waiting for the phone to ring to take what's offered. We teach the world how we want to be treated.
Yeah, he also said that Jimmy Dugan was where he stopped playing nice guys who can't figure out the thing that causes them to lose the girl, and he started playing guys who experienced compromise and real life struggles.
I think Bosom Buddies was the first time I knew his name
I remember watching A League Of Their Own with my parents. We all enjoyed it immensely and my father said "I didn't like Tom Hanks, until now. He's grown up."
I LOVE that he dropped a Marvel Comics reference. Would love to meet Tom Hanks one day.
Everyone wants Tom Hanks as a friend!
Love this actor... one of the best
His son exposed the real him
@@amiegrant142 I'll have to look that up
When I was a little kid in the 1950's and as a teenager in the 1960's Jimmy Stewart was my favorite actor. Then Tom Hanks came along and as an adult Tom Hanks became the Jimmy Stewart of the Baby Boomer generation. Hanks is 7 years younger than me, though with a birthday in 1956 he is a Baby Boomer. He has a distinctive voice like Jimmy Stewart and I think he has even been more prolific in the number of movies he has been in. His role in Forest Gump is probably the favorite for me as he really had to immerse himself in that character.
I meant to click the thumbs up button but accidentally clicked thumbs down :( I removed the thumbs down but I'm afraid you might have gotten the notification and I want to make sure you don't think I had a negative reaction to such a lovely comment :)
@@randoquaid9409 Thanks for the follow up. I didn't receive any notification of a negative rating.
I was born in April 1974 fifty years old now so I have followed his career and I would say it is the best 👌 out of the many who started their film and TV career the same time Tom hanks did 😊
BLACK BOLT SPEAKS!!!!!!
Yes!
I am still shell shocked
Caught that too
This
🤫
I caught it as well and had to show my wife. Then I really had to explain the full reference, but Blackbolt Speaks!!!
Hanks made his breakthrough with leading roles in a series of comedies: Splash (1984), The Money Pit (1986), Big (1988) and A League of Their Own (1992). He won two consecutive Academy Awards for Best Actor, playing a gay lawyer suffering from AIDS in Philadelphia (1993) and the title character in Forrest Gump (1994). All from Wikipedia
And he should have gotten a third one for his portrayal of Captain Miller in Saving Private Ryan.
@@ornotgortwormiii8731 Absolutely
He was awesome in "A League of Their Own." Great movie.
My husband's cousin and his partner wrote that movie. One of their best.
@@robinbickel4594 my cousin and his partner also wrote that movie! Babaloo and Lowell wrote a bunch of great movies.
@@Erfedwe They really did. Sadly, I doubt any of them would get made today.
@@robinbickel4594 I know they are working on a project, but I am not sure if it is a movie or a play. At one point, they were talking about A League of Their Own 2, but it never got very far. I just spent a week with Babaloo's wife Denise and she had a lot of great stories.
@@Erfedwe I saw the musical version of Mr. Saturday Night on Broadway a few years ago. So much fun. Since I'm on the east coast, I don't get to see Lowell as much as I'd like.
It was amazing to see him in Big in 1988 and see him in A League of Their Own in 1992 and see how much his looks had changed in just 4 years
He gained 30 pounds and let his stubble grow in for A League of Their Own. That’ll age anybody up.
One of the (probably the most) lovable stars of today. He seems like a nice guy.
Tom had a pretty good track record throughout the 1980’s. In 1990-1991, he did Joe Versus the Volcano, The Bonfire of the Vanities, and Radio Flyer in a row, all of which were bombs. I’m sure he thought his career was cooked, but A League of Their Own (1992), followed by Sleepless in Seattle, Philadelphia, and Forrest Gump catapulted him into superstardom.
I saw Joe vs the Volcano a few times when I was a youngin’ - for some reason I remember liking it. Though that was back when I had little/no taste
And owning a large chunk of Forrest Gump made him super rich!
Big was a big hit!
Yes, as someone that followed his career from Splash, many in the media were writing him off by the time League came out. Then he had that iconic performance, followed by his string of big hits and Oscar noms/wins.
Joe vs the volcano is a good movie.
Fascinating interview, and a great question!
“There’s no crying in baseball “…iconic
Yes. I was thinking that A League of Their Own was a good film and why would that cause the lightning bolt on what he should say no to. But his role was not the highlight of that film.
I hate that rant so much. But the Capital One ad referencing it is so very much worse.
"Black Bolt speaks." Everyone first checks that they heard that right and then runs to the comments to make sure. Wow.
LOL, that's exactly what I did as soon as I heard it.
I've never seen a Tom Hanks movie that I didn't love.
The missed the lead: Tom Hanks is a comic book head!
Definitely buried the lede there.
Wow! This explains Joe Versus the Volcano !!!
It was a fun movie, and he got to work with Meg Ryan...
harsh, but fair ... 🙂
Possibly, but at the same time that was such an odd film that I would imagine he had a lot of fun with it. (Though I would imagine Meg Ryan had even more fun by playing 3 roles.)
I would have said Splash was his first role that he became well known. He then was in Big which was popular as well.
But I was a young kid and these are the roles I remember him first in.
Joe Vs The Volcano is where I first fell for this man. He's only gotten better over the years...
I love how pragmatic and humble he is.
Like many others that "Black Bolt speaks" moment jolted me up in my seat!? I had to go back just to check... ok then. Make His Marvel I guess!
I’m showing my age, but someone give Mr. Hanks a no-prize for that reference!
You don't make the "Black Bolt speaks" reference if you've watched the MCU. You do it if you've READ Marvel Comics.
Maybe Hanks was really into that Inhumans show they spun off from that Agent Coulson show.
I read that Tom actually started out as a technician, stage crew, lighting guy.
And then evolved into one of the most pretentious elitists in hollywood. yeah its a great story.
@@saucyrossy3698 Seriously....guys insane.
Luck is everything. If you don't get a decent streak of it at one point... it's over. No exceptions. You have to accept it. Hanks--like all other successful individuals--was fortunate.
"Ahhhh you know ohhh Rita told me maybe I should try to play a bad guy! So I took on the role of gump"
Like the Black Bolt speaks reference.
Dude , he's comic book guy , BLACK BOLT , classic Marvel !!!!!
DID TOM HANKS JUST MAKE A COMIC BOOK REFERENCE!!!!?!?!
If you can bat .300 in baseball, you're missing 700 hits out of 1000, or 0.7, or 70% of the time. A metaphor implying the majority of your acting career is going to flop; your legacy is defined by 30% of your performances.
This guy is on both lists!😮😢
lolol yuuuuuupppp. but the sheep dont care. "evil guy make movie goooooooood."
the black bolt reference caught me off guard lmao
right? i feel like the conversation should have derailed right there.
I’ll be honest, it went over my head.
That’s because it’s a REALLY deep pull.
What does it mean?
I don't care what ANYONE thinks or says, Tm Hanks included! BACHELOR PARTY is one of the Greatest Comedies EVER! Jam Sandwich!
Bachelor Party and Joe Versus the Volcano everything after those was gravy.
“There’s no crying in baseball! No crying!”
"Bosom Buddies"^^^
Oakland native god damn it. Take that naysayers. ❤
Being a young actor or actress and not a superstar is like working for a temp agency. Lol
I used to say anything Hanks is in is worth watching. However, he has proven me wrong time after time over the past twenty years. He's bankable, but not unsuckable.
It would have been nice to hear "what he didn't want to do" at that time....
I just realized "A league of their Own" was in 1992. I'm F*cking antique, seems like it was just a few years ago.
1992 WAS just a few years ago. Wasn’t it?
Dude just comfused 70% with 0.7%
it's at that point we realized he gave up a stellar career in mathematics for his acting side hustle
I truly don't mean this as an insult...how do you get Tom-friggin-Hanks to do a sit-down interview with a channel that has barely 10K subscribers?!
Sorry can’t watch him anymore! He’s got the right to say whatever he wants! Don’t mean we have to finance his words!
I have a part for him. What do I have to do to get it in front of him? It is the true story of an innocent man who went to prison for a crime he didn't commit.
“You define your actually by when you say no”
Someone should tell Christopher Walken that.
They probably have, but he’s too busy not giving a fuck lol.
Walken proudly accepts any role he’s given. He sees it as a challenge.
Not much for math though, I'd say. No, Tom. Not "Point-seven percent of the time." That'd be 70%, actually.
Tom apparently not so good at math: if you’re batting .300, that means you’re missing 70% of the time, not 0.7% of the time. Love him anyway.
Oh stop. You know what he meant. He knows what he meant. He just fumbled his words.
Josh Baskin
Tom Hanks just said making the Nut, in the same sentence he refers to his child........now that’s word play
I want a Forrest Gump Part 2!
Respectfully, Forrest Gump 1 is perfect with a perfect ending. No need to go further.
Missing 0.7% of the time? Tom, that would be batting .993
Lmao, why does Tommy look like Kid from Kid and Play?
Hey Tom, I paid to see that Otto movie. I want my money back.
The first time I saw Tom Hanks was of a television show, that I don't recall the name, but Michal J Fox was in it--a family show and Tom played a bit of a drinker. Geena Davis also did that show as well and is when I first saw her. Later they both had TV shows and then suddenly, they were movie stars. It was odd that I recognized them and wanted to see the movies, because that was the impression they made. Meryl Streep did same later when I saw her in Holocaust. I couldn't bear to watch every scene of the movie but, that was why I went to see her in movies. Now, there are so many actors, so many shows and movies that I don't really follow them. Most just play themselves but "pretend to be someone with a different name". The first time in a long time that I was actually wanted to go to a movie theater was Hanks in A Man Called Otto. Never went ...but I don't see the point to see some movies that are promoted because of someone who has a strong social media fan base and therefore they get work. Some are good, others are...well like the actress in the 50 Shades movies...I didn't bother with those and just as well. Thanks to you Mr. Hanks...and your wife...Rita is pretty good too.
Tom Hanks played Uncle Ned in an episode of "Family Ties." Uncle Ned is Mom's brother and Alex (Michael J. Fox) notices that Uncle Ned has changed and it's a drinking problem.
He also starred in the sitcom "Bosom Buddies" with Peter Scolari.
At the very end: that’s 70% of the time, not .7% of the time.
Hanks is no Sparky Anderson.
More like « 70% of the time », but we understand… great analogy btw, all careers (or businesses) based on a « hit and miss » concept are so tough !
Tom Hanks does all these podcasts and random interviews because it still steams him that he got called out for you know what and everyone knows it’s true because he bolted and vanished from Twitter. He thinks that these interviews will return his public image to what is was before, but they won’t. He thought he could avoid his sins until he died, but he has to pay for them now. The irony is, he would have been fine with that illusion if his image had stayed intact, but it has crumbled, and with it, his illusion upon himself of being a decent human being.
What's really funny is I have seen him make fun of Ron Howard a number of times, but you know he's just as funny it's not funny Erin goofier than Ron Howard. His very nervous, quick, bouncing all over the place type of talking. He really is funny and goofy than Ron Howard. I like him as an actor he's a great actor, but this is something I just noticed
Be bagged penny for this part
paper bagged
He messed up the ending with 0.7%
Maths doesn’t appear to be his forté
Tom did the math… batting average is based from 1.000. If ya bat a 300, that’s .300, the rest is misses or .700. Don’t be so quick to show you’re stupid.
@@Skip-m7l Tom did the maths wrong. .700 is 70% not .7%
Still waiting on the sequel to Mazes and Monsters!
Great actor. Not so good at math. 😎
Yah im a team player at a point of 50% of 100% of the time im asked to address something. If its not necessary you become part of a problem. Notify, next NO!
He said black bolt speaks! He’s a nerd!
huh, no mention of the first child he met through harvey weinstein
I’m more interested in why he was taking all those trips to Epstein Island
Tom Hanks who? gives a damn!
Too bad such a good actor can be so stupid about politics
When he sold his soul to the devil
Too bad hes a left
Hanks is one of the least funny people in Hollywood. Nobody would have guessed that 30 years ago.
Racism 2 ways...Why Bolt gotta be Black!? & Black Bolt is White!?
Hanks is making EXCUSES for all the bombs/lemons of his career...... He couldn't say "No" as a producer??? As good as "A man called Otto" is "The Circle" is a SKUNK smell you can't get out of your car for 30 years. Tom-----cut with the pretentious PLEASE>
No need for title clickbait, you have TH on your show. Disappointing.
All you had to do was stay out of politics Tommy boy. Now I’m blocking this channel. Bye bye
ahhhh, snowflake
It has recently changed again… He is Box Office Poison now… Career over
"It ain't over till it's over." Yogi Berra...
In what world is this the truth?
I thought it was when decided to abandon his fans and get on the woke bus
What, your idol disappointed you? I watch actors to see them do their craft in a movie, TV, play, etc. really don’t give a damn about the other stuff.
@@danc3693exactly, we watch actors for acting. Not their political ideology that they push on others. Stop idolizing these pdfs.
