And the part in the anteroom where he figures out why she was fired. I’m sure that director wanted to fire Charlie for bringing her in for the interview, but there was no way he could.
I think there's a few things going on that make those so lovely and joyful for Sorkin addicts, myself included. Those throwaway lines are one of the reasons we love him. Two of the big factors are (1) how Sorkin writes about internal conflict, and (2) the attention to small details signals care and investment. 1. the throwaway lines often come when dealing with a thorny question. like here. Sam's question gets at the heart of Jed's conflict. In less deft shows, and in life, those kind of direct questions are uncomfortable for us as humans. Sam has nailed an unresolved tension for a smart person like Jed. Sometimes we too don't understand ourselves. And when put on the spot, we squirm to describe what we haven't yet had time to resolve. But "i don't know, I'm a puzzle" relieves the tension of the question. And reminds us its ok to sit with unresolved unanswered questions, until the time is right to answer them. We love the line, because it saves us, and Jed, from delving where we aren't ready to go.
(2) the attention to detail. again, in less deft shows, you don't get lines like those. The writers have to carry the plot forward. Dialogue and screen time are scarce, everything has to be directed towards a purpose. But as an audience, the effect of economy can make us feel rushed, hurried. We don't get to spend time dwelling and sitting with characters. Sorkin tries to work around that feeling of hurriedness by giving us small throwaway lines. We can see and feel, signalled by these lines that clearly aren't just exposition or plot driven, that the author of the content is willing to let us see inside these folks, their messiness, the small details about them. We feel relieved of the hurriedness of getting to the end of an episode. and for that relief, we are grateful and delighted by the lines that offered the relief to us. sorry for the super long reply. I love Sorkin, and am fascinated by how he manages to do what he does
Debbie was great casting. She just looked like the kind of woman who would give you a sharp bollocking when you need it, but treat you with warmth and kindness when you need it too.
Thank you for including her scene with Ronna! It always makes me tear up to see her emotions at the door of the Oval Office, and Debbie telling her she's got this
I knew a high-powered executive assistant through my ex boss, and you truly can't wrap your head around how much work these people put in each day. For all intents and purposes, these individuals are co executives of whatever organization their working at. The success or failure in a lot of cases at this level can be traced back to the executive assistant. It's truly an amazing profession and gets you on list within inner circles of the most powerful people in the world.
@grapatin that is true, but in the law offices that I worked in, without secretaries and paralegals, the attorneys would be lost. There's a lot of paperwork to funnel through in any transaction

Thank you. Such an absolutely incredible show. I wanted him to be the real president. I love seeing Allison Janney in this role again. It's such a contrast with the comedic role she played on "Mom".
The irony of this story is that Charlie has his job because she recommended him to Josh, and she will get this job because Charlie sets up the interview.
I just yesterday finished viewing the box-set of Sorkin and Schlamme's 'Sports Night' series. Got it from Inter-Library Loan. Fantastic! It concluded in year 2000. I highly recommend it!
When this came on TV, I couldn't help but look at my late wife and said to her: "That's so you excluding the animals but we would have them also if it wasn't for the fact we live in a condo"
"300 IQ points between them, they can't find their way home. I swear to God if Donna wasn't there, they'd have to buy a house." I love that line, it's not only hilarious, but it shows even Jeb knew Donna was valuable to the team and Josh would be lost without her.
we are a decaying country, but the decay will go on for generations. All the freedoms we created and provided come at a cost for those who take it for granted.
Also, that great bit where he reads to her some history where she protested him and said something bad, but still referred to him as President. "Class act". Love this show!!
@@heddalee the only part I didn't like about that episode. Guy was admitting to trying to staff the White House through nepotism right outside the Oval Office and the President was the one apologizing.
The last part is very sad. I know it's a cliche, but one does not really understand until you really see a loved one sick. Celebrate each other, each and everyday. Life is short.
I cannot believe who ever made this Great Video on Debbie didn't include the conversation between President Bartlet and Debbie after the first interview and Debbie remembering the stock information she overheard while in the Oval Office at the exit to the White House. Other than that is a Great Video about Debbie.
That goes double for the next President. I really want Jed to be our President. He was so ethical, so caring, and he really struggled with making the devastating decisions.
Lily Tomlin is a great comic, but she's just as wonderful as a dramatic actress. Many comics learn that timing in presenting a joke is key to delivery; and that same skill can work well in dramatic acting. Other comics have done dramatic acting, such as Robin Williams, to great success. Tomlin is just such an actor and comic.
You skipped the best scene...the scene at the white house station desk when he decides to hire her. Ilove that scene. oh well...Love the show. I've rewatched all seasons at least three times since the election season started. LOL
In a desperate bid to remain sane after the election, I cancelled all news related subscriptions for the foreseeable future. I just can’t bear to see that clown… I’m going with West Wing instead. When reality is too brutal to take, fantasy is so much easier to digest.
Well only another 35 days and Joe Dementia will start to become a bad memory and soon after that we’ll all forget he was ever President…just as he will…
Why would you take the time to meticulously collect all these wonderful reverent clips of her, but withhold the best moment of Debbie Fiderer’s appearances on The West Wing? The most significant scene is at the end of the second half of her job interview with President Bartlet, when he realizes she’s the one. This pivotal, hilarious, and heartfelt moment encapsulates her character’s essence, discretion, and dedication. “She didn’t give you up. She didn’t give you up.” I highly suggest redoing this collection to include that iconic scene. Please and thank you. P. S. Honorable mention for the scene in the episode titled “Process Stories.” of season 5 Episode 8, when President Bartlet tells Debbie that he read her hate mail and liked that she always referred to him as “President Bartlet” in the letters is also a great one to include.
I can say that very thing about several recent popular shows. This show is as much about human interaction, friendship, humor, and hard working people dedicated to principle, as it is about politics. You may not agree with all the political stances, but it is done in a very intelligent and thought provoking manner. The cast and writing is at the top of their craft. You should give it a watch. Of all the cast on The West Wing, Lily Tomlin was by far the best cast character. And yes, I mean above everyone else. She was amazing and was great to see her away from her comedy routines.
Loved the West Wing but I could never understand why they killed off the Mrs. Landingham character considering how the interaction between her and the President, though usually brief, often stole the scene for me personally. Having said that the talented Lily Tomlin was more than up to the task and her interactions with Martin Sheen more than held their own. She was definitely an inspired choice to replace one of the most beloved characters of a truly iconic show!
