I finally did a complete de-frost that took 10 hours. Opened all the doors and turned a fan on to warm it up. Totally worked. No more strange noises, error codes or water in the inside. Totally filled up the drain pans in the back. took off the lower rear vent panel (6 + screws) and removed the water. Works like new. Jerry

My Whirlpool WRF989SDAM00 was making a horrible noise and I found this video when Googling for solutions. Got brave and attempted to do this with the help of my dad. Sure enough, there was a huge amount of ice around the fan and on the coils. We sped up the process of dethawing the ice by using a hair dryer. Lo and behold, it's running great and no horrible noise! I cannot thank you enough for this video - saved me hundreds on repairs and/or a new fridge!!

Perfect directions and diagnosis. Simply the fan rubbing on interior ice buildup from humid summer months and likely occasional ajar door from kids. This was the EXACT problem I was having. A simple fix with a little disassembly of the bottom freezer door. Thank you for posting.

Got home from vacation today and fridge was making very loud noise. Have a kenmoore French door fridge. Noise went away when the French doors were opened but got louder when I opened the freezer drawer. Just got done watching this video and fixing to try this. Hope it works for me. What would cause the ice buildup? Surely that’s not normal right, has to be a leak somewhere. Or just maybe the condensation overtime?

Great video! However, I didn't take off the bottom drawer. It was tight, but I was able to squeeze in front of the bottom drawer to take out the panels.

I managed to get it done without removing the door. Also on my model there were no screws holding the panel on. Just had to pull from the top and it snapped out. The ice had built up to where the fan was and ice was rubbing up against the fan blades making a hell of a loud noise.

The lower freezer compartment's slide stops half way out; it feels as though it has hit a "stop". I cannot figure out why it does out slide all the way out - it is not ice obstruction. What would jam the lower slide mechanism on this model?

Finally I found one that sounds almost like mine. But the one I got is a side by side. I suppose once you know how to take it apart its not so bad. But first look at that big honkin metal box that turns the ice is a bit over whelming.

Arthur I have a Maytag french door draw freezer model MFF2055YEB00 ice builds up in freezer exactly like your video within 6to8 days ice comes back noise come back.Had the brain replaced did not work any suggestions ?
Hey Arthur! I have the same problem with my freezer. Did you ever find out what the problem was and why your freezer kept freezing over? Thanks for your time! - Chris
When a DEFROST TIMER goes bad in a frost-free freezer, it will not run the regular defrost cycle, allowing ice to continue to build up. Have you checked that?

Hey, excellent video! I've got a question though...by just cleaning out the ice from behind the back cover, won't that fill up with ice again? What actually caused that? And Isn't there something to actually fix as opposed to just getting rid of the ice? I need to do whatever I can to stop this exact noise on mine, so I will be trying this right now. Oh, and would the freezer not being set to a cold enough temperature might have caused the ice buildup in the first place? Thanks!

I have a similar Kenmore refrigerator with a similar issue, Mine has two freezer drawers, and two side by side top doors with a ice maker on the left side door. After watching your video, and upon fixing the noise, I noticed all the ice in the ice maker melted over night, and the ice maker has not made any ice since. What do you think is the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Not if the drain is covered in ice. If the ice maker was leaking it would go down the drain into the drip pan. If the drain is plugged you will get a sheet of of ice on the floor. Hi Shawn! Thanks for a great video. I found the same problem with my Whirlpool WRF989SDAM00 and by following your instructions, cleaned the ice around the evaporator fan and the wires. All looks good and the noise is gone. Although the fridge is cool and has the right temp, the freezer does not get cold enough to freeze and the door mounted ice-maker is not producing ice! Any thoughts on what else may be wrong! This is a 2 year old refrigerator. Your advise is greatly appreciated.

great directions but to take door off I have an easier way. the side rails have a little screw on the outer side right and left sides just remove them its just one little screw.now remove the plastic covers on the rails note there is two push in clips on them push in with finger while puling up now you will can pull door up and tilt door inward and out.
Great suggestion, it’s always nice to hear how other people in the industry address different repairs. You input is greatly appreciated and I will add font in to the video as a secondary way to accomplish the same goal.
It looks like a defective DEFROST TIMER could have allowed that ice to accumulate, by not performing the regular defrost cycle. If that timer is bad, the ice will continue to build up like that.

This was going to be my next question - and I was assuming that I would just periodically need to de-ice. Don't suppose you have a video demonstrating that repair? :-) Thanks.
I don't have a video, sorry, but it's not a difficult repair. Step 1: Unplug the appliance from wall outlet, as always, of course. Before taking this on, there is this advice: I was told by a technician to leave the fridge unplugged, open, and have a fan blowing into it for at least a few days, to dry out the interior space around the coils between the upper and lower compartments. Obviously not convenient, if it's your only refrigerator, and I'm not sure how important that step is, but I followed that advice anyway. I think it's because of water-soaked, absorbent insulation. I dried mine for a week or so, but I had a spare fridge. The switch is a little box that's screwed on in back, near the bottom, and has two terminals on it. (If you look it up to order one online, you'll know what it looks like). The rest is pretty obvious.

Jerry

Hey Arthur! I have the same problem with my freezer. Did you ever find out what the problem was and why your freezer kept freezing over?
Thanks for your time!

Is it a possibility that ice accumulation is caused by humidity caused by a duck bill check valve that is worn out or something?
Its possible only if the duck bill is completely off.

You don't think a leak from the ice maker refill could have caused the ice build up?
Not if the drain is covered in ice. If the ice maker was leaking it would go down the drain into the drip pan. If the drain is plugged you will get a sheet of of ice on the floor. Please help us provide more videos to our site by subscribing to our TH-cam page or posting ApplianceVideo.com site on your Facebook or Twitter account.

If its really ice, you should not open one screw, and just heat it with a heating tool, and if the sound didnt go away, just change the evaporator fan
great directions but to take door off I have an easier way. the side rails have a little screw on the outer side right and left sides just remove them its just one little screw.now remove the plastic covers on the rails note there is two push in clips on them push in with finger while puling up now you will can pull door up and tilt door inward and out.
Great suggestion, it’s
always nice to hear how other people in the industry address different repairs.
You input is greatly appreciated and I will add font in to the video as a
secondary way to accomplish the same goal.
Yes in deed

Jesus Christ this is the exact noise my fridge is making. Whirlpool french door fridge from 2013
