I find Duolingo really helpful, but the Finnish is still in Beta, and there are many times when it does not accept correct variant answers, and some times when it’s just plain wrong. Don’t beat yourself up, report the errors and the limited scope of “acceptable” answers, and soldier through with true sisu. You’ll learn a lot by working through the limitations of the current version and help future learners. You’re doing great!!!🤜🏼🤛🏼👍🏼

Thank you!

  • @Suolakissa
    @Suolakissa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

It's a difficult language, so it's only natural that's it will probably be a life long journey to learn it. But you've already come so far and I was really impressed when you understood even the more complex sentences! Duolingo will "punish" you if you have one mistake there, and I agree that some of those were unfair, let's hope that as the course develops it will become a bit more forgiving. And judging by your other videos like vlogs where you speak Finnish and Cadin Keittiö, you're so much more skilled than you give yourself credit for. Keep up the good work!
    ...
But I still think it was hilarious that you thought morsian means an alien xD Especially since you are married, my good man! Wonder if Cat got a good laugh out of that. xD

You have made so much progress with your Finnish! I'd love to see you test how much you understand from Finnish song lyrics for example. Either by listening or reading them. I think lyrics of Apulanta would suit really well, because as far as I remember they don't use too much of tricky slang words.

I've been watching your videos for a few days now and the most impressive moment so far has been the one where you open a non-alcoholic bubbly bottle. The immediate "MITÄ VITT...." -reaction, when the bottle cap exploded was so genuine and as Finnish as it gets. Well done Dave! You have become a Finn, since none other than a Finn would be able to react that way. Generally your Finnish has improved massively during the past years.
I've never followed any actual vlogger before, since I thought it wouldn't be my thing, but you and Cat do have a great thing going on and I really respect your bravery and attitude. I can only imagine what it would be like to make so big change in life, but you guys have done it really well! You have found a real goldmine, since Finns have always been madly interested, about what foreigners think about us (I'm not an exception). You have so great way to tell it and endless amount of material to do. Keep up the good work!

Yes--- is speaking right now/speaks in a general sense -- no real difference in Finnish. As in, if punctuation and Beginning a Word with a Capital Letter make no difference (as is the case with Duolingo), then this shouldn't either.

I just learned some Finnish with the exact same app you're using here. What's difficult for me is that I'm not a native English speaker, but Duolingo only offers Finnish from English... so I needed to work with two foreign languages. And what shocked me: all of a sudden it came to an end. So now I need to find myself a new program to work with. Have fun learning !

  • @johanna_na
    @johanna_na 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh by the way Dave! Dunno why this idea came to me, but you should dive into the world of the vast amount of Finnish verbs we have to describe motion for example. It is ridiculous in a way, but also a sign of a rich language I guess 😛
    Lorista (Purl)
    Liristä (Purl)
    Lotista (Squelch)
    Litistä (Squelch)
    Lätistä (Squelch)
    Väpättää (Flap)
    Vipattaa (Flap)
    Lepattaa (Flap)
    Niristä (Squeak)
    Narista (Squeak)
    Natista (Squeak)
    Nitistä (Squeak)
To a Finn these are all different things, and we know by the word what kind of movement or sound is being meant. We have an ample amount of words to describe the wind, movements and sounds of water, grass, fire etc.

Im Finnish and i have to agree that duolingo is kinda of brutal, most of the mistakes you make are so small that if spoken in a sentence nobody would notice the mistakes.
I would also like to point out that words dont have meanings, they have usages. Duolingo is trying to get you to speak perfect finnish, but nobody speaks perfect finnish and if someone did, everyone would look at him like he was from another planet. Language evolves all the time, making dictionaries become out of date very quickly.

I have followed your Finnish learning since from the beginning and im impressed how much you already know. Many times you are suspicious about some word but you still get it right. Almost always you get the sentence right but Duolingo says its wrong and you do good job for reporting it because the application is made in USA so i believe it is difficult to make it perfect in every language so you ''teach'' it for the future Finnish language learners.

I'm American, have a finnish fiance, have lived here 4 years and studied the language for three, and live in a primarily swedish speaking area of Finland. So to say, me ollaan samassa veneessa...
While there is much you can accomplish at home, going to a course will not only help you with the grammar, but it will give you ahuge confidence boost when you find that you have actually made great progress already. You are among the small percent who can pursue the language acquisition outside of the classroom, and with a little help I bet you will reach fluency before me.
Perhaps you can make a reboot series of the Race to the Finnish called Suomen Kielen Isoin Maraton to reflect your dedication to long term learning!!
    Edit: spelling

Hyvä juttu, No its not a easy whit Finnish. Swedish has many words from german, france and american, so it can be easy understand and learn...But Finnish sound weird, hard for some, but I think it sonds powerfull, you lnow ehen you are in trouble, but the kind and romantic words maybe not so soft, Take the world I love you and the word I gona kill you, I do think I love you sounds harder, then I gona kill you in finnish 😂 People who doesnt understand will defentlly reacy more at shouting I love you, then I gona kill you...

I'm starting to believe that 80% of your viewers are finnish and when you're talking about finnish stuff they're finnish people you're talking to all this long
