    I found the easiest and cheapest way to quiet valve train noise. I put a small piece of cotton or ear plugs in each ear. The bike runs smoother too!

    I had an HD SE cam put in when I had the oil pump upgraded in my M8 107 - also had the SE lifters at the same time. When it came out of the dealer, you could hear the valve train from space! I was not happy and even had a "discussion" with the "master tech" who said "they all do that" (I was not at all impressed as he didn't even come and listen to it)... When they finally actually listened to it, they agreed it was a problem - turned out to be a faulty lifter... A little extra noise is OK, but this was a LOT of extra noise!

    Thought I had bad valve train noise after putting an S&S 475 in my ultra limited 114. Everyone told me noise was just normal noise but I decided to tear back into the cam chest anyways. Found my cam pinion bolt had come loose letting the cam walk and contact the case. After taking care of that issue there is absolutely no valve noise. I used S&S lifters, FM adjustable pushrods and stock cam plate and stock upgraded 8 lobe oil pump. This cam is awesome and sounds amazing.

    I have owned my 2010 Ultra Classic for a year and have watched every video you post since I started looking for my first Harley after having a Honda Shadow ACE 1100 for 15 years.
    Your videos are always excellent and extremely informative, bit this is the one that may finally put my mind at ease.
    My bike has an S&S 110 big bore kit with ported heads, woods 777 cams, V&H power duels and many more performance upgrades. The tick tick tick was driving me crazy and when I recently had to do a partial rebuild (new jugs and pistons) I added Rocker Lockers hoping it would eliminate the “music”. It has not. It may be less now, but the ticking (makes me think of a sewing machine) is still there. The bike is just around 1000 miles since the new jugs were put on and I am learning to live with the sound. I don't think I'll ever get used to it 100 % but this is the video that will help me be less freaked out by it.
    Thank you.

    Years ago I put in on my Electra Glide a touring performance cam I believe from Andrews they would get happy at low RPM so you wouldn't have to downshift before the cam got happy one of the best things I ever did these bikes are for touring or cruising they're not full out racing bikes buy a Hayabusa if you want to do that but if you want good performance that's matched to the style of bike really a cam that gets happy at lower RPMs is the way to go unless you're going to the drag strip

  • @thomasheer825
    @thomasheer825 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Sorry the HD engine is quite a bit undersquare and air cooled on top of that. The valvetrain is going to be drastically stressed when you start you start ramping up the lift and duration. You have actually a rather heavy valve train as compared to most other bike engines out there. Now take into account that this weight starts taking effect at the higher RPM ranges, remember you have to lift that cam off the seat and return it to the seat with the springs ensuring that everyting is staying in place. Now simply physics starts to take effect there with the square law rule of thimb. So now it will require a much heavier spring to keep things in correct place at higher revs. Now for the bad thing with the heavier springs will result in higher seat pressures. Now since the valve is hitting the seat at a faster veloicty due to the lift and duration being more radical, veloicity being the movement of in distance as to the degree of cam rotation. Sorry you cannot cheat physics guys, you can do things to minimize the problem but it is still there. This is why often high rpm engines use overhead cams with the cam over the valve to reduce mass, you are moving much less mass so the valve spring tension can be much lower. My total suggestion is simply with a HD engine "Leave it alone" as all you are going to do is throw huge sums of money making more horses and then even more money spent fixing the problems created by the quest of more horsepower. I actually liked the EVO motor as it was improved and didn't make the power to beat itself into pieces and parts at a astounding rate the newer engines are well known for. The best thing I can equate a HD engine to is take your farm tractor and it will run forever in the field without much issue, now set it up for tractor pulls and it will make ungodly power for a very short period of time before it displays it's internals in a very colorful manner if not constantly attended to.

    • @chrish5791
      @chrish5791 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember looking at the valve train of high reving overhead cam Honda engines when I was a kid. They had a set of cam operated “fingers” that came up under the valve spring retainer lifting the valve and spring back up to the seated position via the cam thus allowing them to use much lighter valve spring pressure while still allowing very high rpm. I haven’t looked at recent engines to see if they’re still using this method but I would assume that they are.

    • @thomasheer825
      @thomasheer825 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chrish5791 Yes remember seeing this also. Owned several Ducati Desmo engines over the years, and they work, little complex to maintain though. The old Honda system appears to be a modification of the Desmo system, which they could not copy exactly due to the legalities of the time and since with spring metallurgy and design advancements these complex systems slowly became not cost-effective, yes Desmo worked better as the valves could not float but the cost and engineering was very complex and labor-intensive to maintain so at present I think Ducati is the only one using this system nowadays. Using a radical valve system on a Harley is really not that intelligent when you think it out. The engine is tremendously under-square, with an assembled crankshaft, not a forged one-piece unit, failure-prone under high loads and high RPM's. So you can for a short time get a bunch more power, but due to physics "the glue that holds the universe together" you have a tremendously short engine lifespan. My feelings are if you want a fast bike with a lifespan over 10k before total rebuilds, Harley is NOT THE ANSWER.

      @@RyDawg1904 I didn't do anything with any of that, the heads where not pulled as the engine only had about 15,000 kilometers on it. Bike starts and runs awesome, getting better by the day, as the carbon is cleaning itself off the piston tops after rerouting the head breathers out of the intake. I also drilled the drain hole in the bottom of the head breathers slightly bigger (2 drill bit sizes) hoping the oil will drain back into the engine rather than coming out the breather bolts. so far I am not getting much oil coming out the hose at all. Also changed the filter in the head breathers as they get brittle a d shrink and probably let more oil through. I was surprised how brittle and shrunk they where, considering it only had 15,000k on it. It appears to me that these should be a regular service item.

    About to do Stage II on my 2022 RGS. Cycle Rama 480 Cam (after watching a different video), Feuling cam plate, Feuling oil pump, Feuling cam bearing. S & S Pushrod kit, Bassani 2 into 1, RRIII Stainless full length exhaust, Power vision tuner, 3 hours of Dyno time. The Dyno chart on the CR480 is amazing. Had the 122" SIII on a 2021 RGL. Was okay, but ran hot with SE road tuner & Cat. Heat issues alone are enough to make me swap off. The Bassani 2 into 1 quiets down nicely at cruise speed, enough exhaust note to get the sound we all want. Looking forward seeing the final result.

    For the best of both worlds on an otherwise stock 103,an often overlooked cam choice is the S&S MR 103. The S&S 585 needs headwork & a bump in compression to work well in a stock compression,stock head 103. Without head work & compression bump,the MR 103 will perform just as well as the 585,or,other similar timed cams,without the lower rpm lag,or,noise,kicking in at over 100 ft/lb by 2500 rpm & holding above that out to past 5000. The MR 103 does it quietly too. My valve train after the swap,using S&S lifters ,was actually quieter than stock.
    S&S designed the MR 103(mid range 103) cams specifically for the stock head,stock compression 103 motor. Breaking that 100 HP mark is a tuff job on a stock head 103,regardless of cams. The stock heads hit a wall at that point & going bigger on cams doesn't really add anything,except lack luster bottomend torque & most often tuning issues in the lower ranges. The comparison of dyno charts between the 585 & the MR 103 shows that very plainly. It is a different story tho,once the heads are worked & compression increased.

    • @jayfeatherstone5959
      @jayfeatherstone5959 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RyDawg1904 if you have a 103 motor,the MR 103 cams will give as much,or,more low end torque, while holding out well past the 551 to make 8 to 10 more HP on the top end. That is provided it is properly supported with exhaust,breather, &,tuning. The 551 cams are really better suited to 88" & 96" motors & their lower compression.

      Thanks for your post on the Fueling 525 cams. I was hoping GixerFoo would mention them as they are the cams that I’ve thought of installing in my ‘06 FXDWGI along with a Fueling cam plate with hydraulic tensioners and high volume oil pump. I bought this bike this year as my first Harley and have found that it’s been everything that I wanted. Now after riding this summer I’m not sure that I want, or need any more than what this 88 TC puts out (it looks like old age is catching up with me and I’m starting to ride like an old geezer). It was also great to find out my dumb luck in getting the ‘06 Dyna Wide Glide in that it was one of the only ‘06 models to come from the factory with hydraulic cam chain tensioners rather than spring tensioners. GixxerFoo also told me that it had the ‘07 96 TC heads on ‘06 for some reason. Anyhow thanks for relating how your Fueling cams are running in your TC.

    • @jayfeatherstone5959
      @jayfeatherstone5959 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most Fueling cams are broad tip cams & make good power,but,without all the noise & accelerated valve train wear that can come some of the more aggressive cams. The minor gains from Wood & other aggressive cams is very negligible unless your looking the absolute max HP ,or,1/100th second at the track. Fir the average street ridden bike,the noise will be more noticeable than any power gains you'll notice.
