I had a friend give me some reloads (30-06). I just wanted the brass for my own reloads, and when I pulled them down there was about 1/4 to 1/2 of a minimum powder load. Never trust reloads for critical defense situations, not even your own... and fire at least one round of any commercial box to make sure it is good ammo, and on target.
Don't get me wrong, I trust my own reloads, but just a little oil on a primer or other unnoticed problem, and you could have a dud on your hands at the worst possible time. If it's a custom hunting round that you worked up for your rifle, then that is different. At worst you might lose your trophy buck. Actual hunting rounds I always make on a single stage press, and double check everything very carefully. I want my actual hunting rounds to be perfect.

    • @barking.dog.productions1777
      @barking.dog.productions1777 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Maxim C. Home canned goods. It is a process to home can food properly, and if you screw it up you can poison someone. Basically, you need to sterilize your jars (pressure cooker), put the food into the jar with the lids loose in the pressure cooker for a specific time, tighten the lids properly, store the food properly after canning. Some foods need to have an additional layer of melted wax on top of the food for an air-tight layer to seal the food away from the small amount of air at the top of the jar.

Absolute truth! I ALWAYS weighed my hand loads before I boxed them. I also weighed them a second time later on before I packed them for a hunt just to be absolutely sure. I never "dummy" loaded one the whole time I reloaded but as soon as I stopped checking I would probably have had some kind of crazy shit like this happen to me, which would be my worst nightmare coming true. I've actually gone back to buying factory ammo now. Only reason I can see to reload now is if you're competition shooting, which I don't do not to mention it's no longer really cost effective since so many people have started doing it. Fun hobby though if you have the time and just want something to do.

Here in the UK we have an American tv series showing a group who travel from town to town "investigating" big foot sightings , I don't think it does your cause much if any good apart from people standing up and saying in public they've had an "experience". As a life long hunter (we would say shooter or wildfowler or stalker etc) I appreciate your knowledge and understanding of wildlife and how ecosystems work . Having spent a short time in your area (Vancouver and Sqarmish) I understand a little about the sheer scale of your country . We have the same problems here to some extent , those politicians looking after the countryside don't know shit from clay about it and how it works . I was charged by a mother black bear a few years back when i was bow hunting for deer. The two cubs came up on me and when they saw me they each went up trees right beside me and mom was not going any where. She charged me several times and one of the last charges she was only about 5 yrds from me. That puts the bung hole pucker factor up. I'm standing there with my knife in one hand and an arrow in the other thinking this is going to hurt really bad in a few minutes, but i was lucky. One of the cubs came down out of the tree and than the other, and all three ran down the hill away from me. After that little incident i now carry a ruger super redhawk alaskan in .454 when im out behind the house hunting just in case. I was very lucky that day, and i definitely don't want to experience that ever again.

I don’t live in NY anymore, VT is much easier to buy a sidearm, background check and your on your way, no permit required
Edit: due to a few recent bow hunting encounters with bears sidearms are now legal to carry here in VT while bow hunting.

I hear a twig break behind me and not 5 yds away crouched down a big tom cougar was following me the whole time down the road... well I drew my 40 within milliseconds, "I coulda won any fast draw comp with that one"..... click...... wtf... jack....click.... HEEEEEYYYYY!!!! Cat runs off thank God.. look on the ground at my feet and my mags laying there.... well the night before I had cleaned it due to rain that day and forgot to jack a shell into the chamber afterward.. "normally every second of everyday that gun is ready to pull the trigger".... drew, empty chamber.. re jack, empty chamber... ontop of forgetting to put one back into the chamber the night before after cleaning, when I drew on the cat in those milliseconds I somehow hit my mag release and dumped my mag to my feet without realising it, so when I went to jack another round into the empty chamber... there was no magazine in the gun.. long story short thank God he didn't want to eat my big mean voice lol.

Wow, what an entertaining and scary story.
Here's a bit of trivia (which you may or may not know about) which to a small degree somewhat parallels YOUR story.
In 1993 while filming a movie called The Crow, actor Brandon Lee, son of famed martial artist/actor Bruce Lee was shot and killed during a film sequence.
There were "dummy" .44 CAL. cartridges that some dummy put together. He removed the rounds from the shells, emptied the powder, and then re-inserted the rounds into the shells. He neglected to remove the live primers in the process.
Somebody on the set loaded the "make believe" realistic looking rounds into the cylinder of the gun... and pulled the trigger.
After hearing a muffled-muted sound come from the gun, instead of the loud report and fire that "blank" cartridges generally produce... It was decided to remove these "home-made" make- believe rounds from the gun and load it with full charge blanks the way they used to.
You probably guessed it by now. The muffled muted sound heard was the primer "popping" the round into the barrel where it now lodged itself... setting a deadly stage for Brandon Lee who was supposed to be shot with the .44 MAG. in the next scene.
The actor with the now deadly gun took aim at Brandon and fired the gun which was now loaded with full power blank cartridges.
The exploding full powered blank now dislodged the jammed round from the gun's barrel which nobody noticed was there earlier, creating a "perfect storm" ... sending the round screaming downrange and unfortunately, into the actor's chest ... killing Brandon Lee in the process.
The strict rule of NO LIVE AMMO ALLOWED ON A MOVIE SET was technically violated, causing a young, promising actor to lose his life ... all because of a careless mistake!

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

thanks. i was a big fan and all this time i never knew those details. i thought someone mistakenly loaded it with a live round.

I think that I will skip ever going hunting with you lol maybe target practicing . In middle of a big city. In a big indoor shooting range. With no bears around except yogi and boo boo on tv!! Yes I'm quite happy with just listening to you tell your tales!! Though even then you always manage to scare hell out of me! I love it!! Ty

Still by far the best/scariest bear story I've ever heard! Holy shit you're so lucky to be alive, Steve ... (Yeah, I'd be a bullet shaker for now on too!!!)

Wow that's one hell of a story and if I were you I would be carting a very powerful side arm in that situation and if that ever happened again

That mother bear has seen a bear shot before, she recognizes a rifle obviously. She just got her kids out of there, wow, mothering instincts like that of a human mother.

Your guardian angel was looking out for you brother! I've had two Grizzly encounters in a Wilderness Area that's largest in the lower 48 and they say there's no grizzly bears in these woods.
I was backpacking with my brother from California I said you lead .....bears like that nice tan California meat. Sure enough couple miles later he runs head on into a grizzly on his two feet standing straight up then I come walking up. We both Stood Still and just looked at the bear for a moment. He then ran about 20 yards up the side of the Hill got up on his hind legs again and looked at us we walked about 5 ft Ford and then the bear took off up in the woods. About an hour later. My brother still leading and we run into a second grizzly bear this time on the trail. Luckily he heard us as this one didn't hang around as long but he was huge had a big blonde Mark around his neck. And then about 20 minutes later we ran into not one but two mountain lions. It was quite the day on the trail!

Sarah has to be a nervous wreck when you are out there. Not because you aren’t capable, just because of the unpredictability of wild animals, especially bears AND apparently bad shells😳 Stay safe mountain man!
