Been riding that loop for a long time and is still one of my favorite.. lots of locals won’t do it because bent creek is known as the busiest trails systems and not adventurist enough but for a good all round loop I have a hard time beating that one..
Hey Alex, long time viewer here, you inspire me so much man, even though I don't have a really nice bike (I have a hardtail that's basically a Walmart bike, steel frame) I still go out and ride my bike everytime I can (really busy with school at the moment). But hopefully I will get a new bike, my school is organizing a big bicycle ride and a local bike shop is sponsoring the event so they are giving away a hardtail that while it still is not a legit trail rated bike, it's better than the one I have right now, at least it has an aliminium frame and indexed shifters instead of friction ones. I'm stoked to go on this ride even if I don't win the bike, I love my bike and I love your channel, keep on being frickin' awesome dude!
Totally worth it! I went down to Ashevill on a DCMTB team trip and we stayed at the house past the gate in Bent Creek. Green's like was awesome, but I recommend climbing up the easy way, Pinacle mtn road & north boundary road!
No idea why he went up ingles field gap like that. I did that the first time i ever went to vent creek but once i realized the road went there i never did that again
Hell yeah, great video, dude! That's such a great loop to ride. If you're staying in Asheville and even have time to drive further away, I still think it's worth it to just do that loop in Bent Creek once. Green's Lick is seriously fun and you get to bomb Ingle's Field Gap after as well, which is great fun, too! What I like about Green's Lick is that it's a bombing downhill with some techy stuff but nothing too intense AND alternate lines so basically anyone with basic skills can ride it and enjoy it safely. You can push it as much as you feel comfortable. I've ridden that loop a number of times but it's always been in late Fall or early Spring, so it was crazy to see how lush the green was in your video. Whenever I've done that final stretch of climbing from 5-Points, it's pretty barren and mostly a doubletrack but in your video, it was most definitely just one singletrack through the growth. Anyway, great video.
I love these trails! Green's Lick has gotten a lot more chunky over the past 10 years. I remember when that last section with the water bars being smooth, now it's very chunky and can get sketchy with lots of speed.
I can't imagine that there are people who exist who have not seen your channel. I like to think everyone knows the greatness of this channel. I have to watch it daily if not every other day, even older episodes as it never gets old. Love the stuff, love the attitude, love the vibe you give to all around you.
I have been riding Pisgah for years. I just recently rode Greens Lick for the first time. I loved it. I have decide this should be the first trail people who are on their first trip to Pisgah ride, because it has a little of many different features that I love on many of Pisgah's trails. But nothing to over the top tough like it can be in some areas of Pisgah. Perfect introduction to Pisgah!
Gary Decker I was going to say the exact same thing. Rode it for the first time myself a couple weeks ago. The climbs can be long but they are not bad. It gets you ready and probably amped to ride other trails in the area.
That was a great video man. You killed that trail while giving the beta in great detail... WHILE your riding; but took it back a little, which I appreciate. I've watched your channel for only a couple months, you've got great videos, and a LOT of them. Love this episode's intro, I wouldn't want you to talk to us like an entity all the time, but made me feel a little more... welcome on the channel....keep it up boss. You live one life.
This loop is a great way to get in 15+ miles with 3 good downhills. I do this ride when I don't have enough time to get to Pisgah or Black Mountain. I do it slightly differently where you are not doing as much climbing the downhills, adding a few short trails before the good DH sections and sometimes add Corvair to the end before getting back to the Rice Pinnacle parking area. If anyone was so inclined, it could be a fun 3DH Enduro loop competition, that would be good for riders of all skill levels. Keep the good videos coming, STS!
I have dreamed of a Enduro race in Bent Creek. Greens Lick, Ingles Field, Upper and Lower Sidehill. Some other good screamers in there. Wanna plan a race?
I love your videos man! I was thankful to meet you recently at Sycamore Cycles. I appreciate you taking time out of your day to stop and talk. Keep up the great videos man! Live Free, Ride Hard, Get Stoked!!
I'll be home finally and this is the first place I'm riding! Definitely a blast. Wolf Branch is my favorite. Love the lower half. It gets flowy through the small trees and that one climb up the roots is always fun.
FINALLY GOT A NEW BIKE. After my old Kmart bike broke (like they always do) I went and got a ghoast kato fs 5. It is so much fun hitting the singletrack with it. Huck Yeah!!!🤘🤘🤘
Man the ghost Kato fs’s are freakin sweet looking. Was looking at them when I was in the market for a new bike.. Decided to build my own mid travel trail/enduro bike from the frame up. Always wanted too and am so glad I did. Got a 2018 cannondale bad habit for a decent price and went to town.
@@deedubs602 Thats super cool. I eventually want to build my own bike but for now i am busy with school and cant. And I really like the look of the bike too. Thanks for your kind reply. This is what i love about the mountain biking community, everyone is nice to eachother lol.
Riding Green's Lick recently, it was awesome and the climb was great warm up. All trails need maintenance, so I'd be cautious the first time on anything. Hey, I rode that part you helped build, too- so cool, thanks.
I live 15 mins away, I ride this trail frequently. It is one of my favorites for when I’m not making the trip to DuPont or Pisgah. If you have only one day, maybe not the first must do. But over a few days, I would highly recommend it. The 6-7 mile down hill is a ton of fun
@@mattp3478 My 3 favorites are explorer loop CCW, greens lick, and ingles. Explorer is super fun, but short, abt 3.5 miles and the route is self explanatory. Greens and ingles I always put together for a longer ride. There are a two routes I usually do to ride it, if you’d like the directions for both just lemme know
@@live4uncbball Much appreciated. I was in Asheville for 2 days. Did Greens/Ingles the first day, Kitsuma the second. Thanks for the recommendation on Greens, good distance, great loop.
Loving the vids Alex never get disappointed when I watch them, I like the excitement you get when you hit a jump or take a bend just right or when you are 100% dialled in when doing a downhill track , love it , I’m more of a cross country rider never really done much down hill but next week I will be going to my first bike park in wales in the UK looking forward to it , I have ridden bmx and mountain bikes all my life now 50 never to old to have fun, looking forward to many more years of the single track sampler , 🤘🤘
Thanks for tip on Fire Mountain. Regional faves are Ridgeline and Turkeyknob. Just got the courage to do PB&J at Rockyknob and wow it's better than ever.
Alex, shredding it up as per usual. I rode Bent Creek once, about 4 years ago. Very fast, very fun.

I'm a former Oregonian now living in Cleveland Ohio, but, I'm moving to Spartanburg SC, about an hour from Pisgah, this spring, I'm stoked to even have anything this close to me again, I'm sure the worst tails in Pisgah and DuPont are 100 times better that what we have up here in the Cleveland area! So stoked!
rode this last year after baileys closed on a friday night due to incoming rain.....this ride is super sketchy in pouring rain.....especially when you cant see 10ft in front of you.....always love the content! thanks alex!
When I can't drive the extra 30 minutes, that loop is my go-to. but instead of parking at rice pinnacle, I park at ledford branch. If you start from there, you get to ride two quick, but really fun downhill sections on Deer Lake Lodge trail.
First time there in July and it was okay. I'd spend another day at Dupont or riding out of Brevard instead of traveling to Bent Creek. One benefit is that it's close to Sierra Nevada.
Great loop if you're in AVL and don't want to drive too far. It's fairly quick loop, as well. The top half of Green's lick and all of Ingles field are the best parts of this loop as shown. If you've more time, are more adventurous, and want something more challenging check out some other trails in Pisgah (eg. Black/Bennett/Trace/Buckwheat/Pilot).
Did Green's Lick twice this past Sunday (July 12, 2020). At the end of Greens' Lick I took that right and bombed down the gravel road back to where I parked. A fun loop for sure. Will post a video in the next couple of days. Thanks for this video since It's always good to revisit a video of a trail you just rode.
Just watched your latest Greens Lick vid! I was just there 3wks ago and opted not to ride it since riding it 2yrs ago...I'm pissed!! It looks much better now and will put it on the to list next year! Thanx for all you do, I love this stuff! Age 57, riding a Yt Capra pro!
that loop is really fun and I would recommend it if your only gonna be in ashville a short time. but you should also check out lower sidehill, its a really fun trail.
If people come to Asheville and do ride Bent Creek they should do the exact loop you did. That, or a slightly easier one is climbing up to Lower Sidehill, hit that down then climb up to Greens Lick and back down. Either way, great vid!
I like these previews. Makes me want to travel around occasionally. It's always rough when your local trails start getting stale. Luckily, in Maryland, there's a handful of trail systems that offer up a decent mix of whatever you are looking for, but I still find myself wanting for of the flat, flowy bombs that I see people riding all across the country.
Riding with the homies is great, but sometimes it’s those solo rides on a solid trail that can be like much needed therapy... and some tacos wouldn’t hurt. Keep it up man 🤘🏼
Hey man love your channel. I live in Asheville I ride bent creek after work. I've always got to five points buy the dirt road if I'm planning on climbing side hill. It's not as steep but it is a little bit longer. Maybe I'll see you in the woods !! Keep riding hard!!!
Alex, really enjoyed this video! Hope that you're able to get on the road soon and really enjoy your van & bikes(s). Cheers my friend, and enjoy a Sierra Nevada PA for me soon! J.T. in N. Idaho!
That video of the dude getting a handlebar broken off into his thigh from that hip jump is what got me into MTB youtubers and mountain biking in general!!
A couple weeks ago I went to Asheville and Greens Lick happened to be the 1 trail I got to ride. I haven't ridden any other trails in Asheville, but I can say Greens Lick was a perfect trail for a midwest flatlander like myself to get acclimated to larger downhill runs. It had a couple fun tough spots at the top and some awesome jumps (you missed the best wood jump/drop by that sketchy rock jump, you went right instead of left), but overall was a nice easy trail with plenty of dh.
Bent creek is a blast. However, if you’re coming from out of town, Dupont is just down the road and has everything you want. “Most Excellent” is an awesome ride.
Great trail, can't go wrong with Bent Creek Experimental Forrest, but there is more on offer if you're willing to scoot around to different parts of Pisgah/Dupont
I like the vid dude. When you start talking about where you are at on the trail, you should then have a pop up graphic on trailforks showing your current location at that point in time. Would make your description more complete.
Pretty cool to see you on some trails I've ridden! I live in ATL so Sope is a regular. And a couple months ago I got to ride wolf branch -> Ingle Feild Gap which was amazing! Keep it up and love the channel!
What a great trail. My Father in laws house is right around the corner. I rode there with my 9 year old 3 weeks ago and we went right by that hip jump. Bobo suggested it and it was well worth the climb. Still gotta edit the footage. Nice riding sampler!
Go do it. Yes, Brevard, the serious Pisgah is very close by, but if you're here a few days, you better do this. This is a great loop Mr. Sampler showed as well. Definitely, a post work ride hot spot, being only 10-15 minutes from downtown. This video reminded me that I need to go ride this loop. Have recently been driving the extra 20-30 mins from my hood to hit the likes of Mills River or The Pisgah Pisgah. This trail is ten minutes from my house. I'm a idiot. Hey me, go ride this trail again!
I just rode this loop Monday except I cut across power line and climb up Ledford. It’s great if not a lot a time or going solo but I prefer mills river area. Spencer/ Trace ridge
This place looks like fun! I’m from Knoxville. I’ve only been to DuPont to ride but we make special trips just to ride there. I’m sure the other places are sick too but it’s just hard for me to pass on a good day at DuPont! I would love to go try Pisgah but I’ve heard it is hard to navigate.
This trail beat me hard on the downhill. My 130mm travel fork was not sufficient when it got really rocky. I’m sure my lines were not the best. I’ve rebuilt my fork and changed the travel to 150mm so I’m eager to hit it again. Regardless, it was still fun!
Depending on skill level, yes or no. If you have family or beginners with you, do it. If you’re here to ride hard don’t bother. Go to Pisgah or DuPont. If you’re in avl and don’t want to travel far kitsuma would be my first recommendation but greens is solid and I always enjoy my time riding the ingles field gap loop with greens lick. Also at the end of the video there’s a trail that goes up and off to your right.. that’s a great jump line
Do bears crap in a woods!?!? Green's licks is a blast and fast as hell!!! Keep up the good work. Grind of a climb but worth it. Glad Shaun in doing well and hope he is till on the bike.
Bro I love the videos. Question for you. I am starting to video some of my rides (no where as Rad as yours). I noticed your sound is great. What do you use as a mic?
Yo, this trail looks sick! I plan on taking a 3-4 day trip to Asheville from Knoxville in mid-September, solely to ride the best that Asheville has to offer. What do you recommend?
Good stuff....love the videos. I'm sure you've answered this before but what gimbal and camera setup are you using? With the camera are you using the stock mic?
I love solo rides for taking the time to explore and find new lines. Can hike back up and hit something several times without holding anyone up. Also, tick check!! Hah :)
Bent Creek is a great place to ride, especially for less experienced riders, as there's enough to challenge your boundaries. For those coming in with big bikes and experience, just go to Pisgah.
I went yesterday for a quick run. After a couple of week doing nothing and I bend my rear derailleur in the first run down with a stone that flicked up.
Been riding that loop for a long time and is still one of my favorite.. lots of locals won’t do it because bent creek is known as the busiest trails systems and not adventurist enough but for a good all round loop I have a hard time beating that one..

Song was the nightmare before Christmas👌👌
that is sooo cool :D keep up the good work 🤗 stay safe bro ✌
You made my heart stop right when you were flying and said "That was close.... I barely held on." Don't do that!
I think my heart skip a beat as well lol
This trail beat me hard on the downhill. My 130mm travel fork was not sufficient when it got really rocky. I’m sure my lines were not the best. I’ve rebuilt my fork and changed the travel to 150mm so I’m eager to hit it again. Regardless, it was still fun!
Super helpful Alex thanks!
Great video! Question, when you say there is better trails but more of a drive, what did you have in mind? Thanks!
The Single Track Skellington! Rock!
Thanks for the new video, Alex. Watching it at corporation. :)
You would have a bunch of fun here in Italy!
Solo riding for life!!!!!!!!!
Amazing. What would you say is the average speed? Looks fast.
Hey dude, believe it or not I don't use a mic! The Hero 4 that I use has a great mic, much better than the newer versions
Woah! You got me on the last min turn before that tree!! 🤪
i think you read my mind then made this video ahah just would want maybe your favorite asheville trails or relatively close !
With the camera are you using the stock mic?
check the description Mitt, I have a whole bunch of links to all the things you wanna know!
Thanks dude!
I love solo rides for taking the time to explore and find new lines. Can hike back up and hit something several times without holding anyone up. Also, tick check!! Hah :)
Yea it is worth it! Watch out for hikers!!! They are everywhere!! Ride it daily for 6 years!! Unless it rained! Didn’t want to leave ruts 🤙🏼😎
This is basically the route I take when I am in Asheville by myself, or I just have a few hours. Also you missed the little rock kicker on Wolf.
Your sound effects you make down the trail give new meaning to the “Sampler” name 😜
Kitsuma is a must
Gotta hit the gap jump on wolf branch next time!
Bent Creek is a great place to ride, especially for less experienced riders, as there's enough to challenge your boundaries. For those coming in with big bikes and experience, just go to Pisgah.
What's the shortest, least effort path up to Green's lick?
I went yesterday for a quick run. After a couple of week doing nothing and I bend my rear derailleur in the first run down with a stone that flicked up.
Rode those same trails on a hardtail, not fun. Gonna head back next month on my FS!
"happy little hopportunities" would be a great beer name
