Alex, thanks for recognizing Canton! If you didn't know, it was recently announced that Canton's paper mill will be closing in June, a major blow to the local economy. I'm a local and I have met many visitors while riding at Berm/Chestnut and we love to have all of y'all visiting. I'd encourage those of you with time to take the two minute drive up the road from the park into downtown. Canton offers great cafes, a coffee shop, bookstore and a brewery with seating along the river. With the paper mills closing, the continued growth of the park and mountain bike tourism will be vital to the town's survival.
Man that sucks when small towns lose massive employers like that. I hope you can pull through. Get your representative to pump hard for a new employer in the area. Much love to that part of NC.
That was such good context about Canton. Really makes you appreciate it. Hopefully it’s better for the community than NASCAR and others can follow. Nothing against NASCAR at all.
My wife and I were just there in the beginning of May. Canton seems like a great town with unique architecture and great little stores and restaurants. I really hope the town is on an upswing. Papertown Coffee and Grateful Table were great places with awesome folks!
The Orbea Rise is like a normal mtb with about 60Nm of torque when you need it for the nasty climbs but it rides like a mountain bike you should definitely check it out bro 🤘🏾
I rode Berm Park last season with my brother on the way back home from a weekend trip to Pisgah/Dupont. Such a fun spot and well-maintained. Grateful for towns like Canton making this possible. My brother and I had lunch in town before heading home. Worth noting I'm not local in any sense of the word...drove 14 hours from Buffalo, NY. I love riding in WNC and can't wait to check out Ladybird.
There’s going to be an event on June 24th welcoming 2 new bike only trails and 2 hike only trails! Seems like the kind of thing they did for opening day. Hope to see ya there!
That Reeb Steezl is an amazing bike, got to demo one recently on a group ride with Jeff Lenosky. Best cornering bike I've ever ridden and amazing cornering and suspension feel. It is a bit pricey though. And it really is built in a shed behind Oskar Blues Brewery, a shed with top of the line CNC and 3D printing machines.
I've been considering a move somewhere. Was born and raised in the Seattle area. And while we have some amazing nature for hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, kayaking, you name it. I think I've explored this beautiful area enough. Now that MTB has become such a big part of my life, moving would definitely have to take that into consideration. I do have some family from North Carolina. Mostly around the Asheville area. It does seem like it has some awesome wooden areas to explore. Has anyone ever lived in both the PNW and NC to compare the two? Of course there's plenty of other places to move to. But I've visited NC a few times and really enjoyed the vibes. It's pretty awesome having something like Outer Banks being a day trip away as well. It's time to switch some things up in life soon and this channel combined with Seth's has really illuminated just how rad the trails over there are.
Lady bird looks like fun ! I haven’t been there since it opened. Ashley, the girl working on the trail you chatted with used to work at my LBS and got me in to MTB’ing. She’s a great ambassador for our sport and dang, she was good at getting me to spend money on bikes !
every time i go to this place theres just family's hiking, experienced and beginner riders. It's truly a massive success. Moved to WNC from Massachusetts recently and I tried working with local agencies to build similar things, but every town is against it. This is incredible the town of Canton is on board.
Wow this is so random that I am seeing this video today. While riding Howler mountain bike park is Branson Mo me and my wife met Nate on the shuttle. He was a joy to get to know and his bike is indeed supper rad.
It's fun watching your videos at 3 minutes and 50 seconds when you avoided that tree I thought to myself. That's the tree I hit yesterday. I'm glad you avoided it. Such a fun place. Thanks for posting this video so I can have a better understanding of how to run this a little neater.
Ladybird looks like so much fun. I started biking at 40 and I’ll be 42 this year. Hopefully this year I can actually start driving my bike around to try some new trails!
I went over the bars in March on the crest at 15:07 before the downhill right turn. I see Nate almost had some trouble there too! My first big crash and I scratched up both arms and a leg pretty good. My bike would still be falling down the mountain had it not caught a vine on the tree on the inside.
9:30 what he’s talking about is so true. As much as I love my state parks that I ride, trails that are owned by a person or business and not government related will be better 9/10 times. The state parks have some sick features, but they seem kinda thrown together at times, and lack lots of maintenance. But the places that are built and kept by people almost always outmatch the gov parks. Maybe that’s just the area I’m at because it’s not a huge sport in most places in jersey, but it goes for many other sports as well, businesses run better because of the passion they have.
Here in Seattle we have an amazing bike park called Duthie Hill. There's tons of beginner/XC trails, combined with pro jump lines with huge doubles and wood features and everything in-between. It's basically been my MTB training ground and it's amazing for progression. Most trails lead to a central clearing area with picnic tables, tools and a bike stand to fix your bike. I know Seth has a video featuring it. Berm Park seems like a very similar vibe. It's just such a great idea for people to progress at a place like this. It doesn't really matter your skill level, there is something for everyone to have fun on.
"there's a nice little rock garden here at the beginning to deter beginners". Me and my brother are brand new to bike riding, and we started out riding blue squares. After roughly 7 hours of riding, we went down a black diamond. Was actually really fun and not as bad as we thought. Didn't take it fast, but was fun to experience all the stuff. (it didn't have any insane jumps or drops or anything). Just thought it was interesting to hear him say that the rock garden was there to deter beginners. haha. I think it would be a nice little challenge towards the beginning as opposed to a deterrent.
I was there this past Thursday. I could not believe how much fun Ladybird was! Holy cow, wins the best flow trail award for me. I will indeed be going back for more. Good share.
Awesome trail!! Did Ladybird for the first time in April and I really enjoyed watching your reactions knowing what was just around the next bend!! Especially that pyramid shaped rock roll at the beginning, surprised the sh*t out of me too! Lol!! You guys really sent it!!! Really looking forward to riding the new trails! With that said, I had about the same experience climbing up to Lady Bird. Was super easy at first but the last half mile was a challenge. Took this old slow guy about 30 minutes to get there from the parking lot with one stop, so if you haven't done alot of climbing, get some done before you go so you don't bonk on the way up and have nothing in the tank to get back down! 🤪👍
I was on vacation in Candler, NC for a week last week. It seems chestnut mountian closes their operation at the hint of a first raindrop and keep it closed for days to dry out. The only days the park was open were the 2 days we had ticketable events/attractions we were attending. I wanted to do the survey for the economic impact of the park system there since we drove from Florida to hike/bike in Western NC. I want them to know people from several states away are coming to the area and hope they keep developing the park further but they only provide the QR code on signage in the park only. Since it was closed all the days we had the free time to hike/bike, never got to participate. Heres hoping to get another chance to check it out one day. But dupont was my favorite place to ride. So much variability for endless fun.
Drove the hour and a half from maryville, tn (out side knoxville) and the trails were too wet to rip appropriately. I reckon I ought to take a trip out this weekend and see what this lady bird is about.
Alex, do more of these small, community parks! Missouri has two outside the St. Louis region in Ironton and Steelville. Both have massive input from the local towns, with Ironton featuring a national Enduro event twice in the past few years. Come check them out!
Nice ride in beautiful weather. Fun fact,on your trip to germany you've been lucky with the weather at the Zugspitze as they had up to 5 meters(~16 feet) of snow last week
Damn, NC is a great mountain biking state...Seth has hit it outta the park again..nice fun trails. Also..I use double Assagai myself, but only exo casings, awesome tires!
Ladybird is epic. rode it over a rare window couple months ago and loved it. Amazing trial and a ton of fun. just bring your hike a bike legs for that final leg.
Love the video. Great look into the new trail at Berm Peak and how riding at a slower pace on the first run is a good idea. Definitely can prevent some of those “oh sh!t” moments. Btw, if you ever are heading towards the Charlotte, NC area I can highly recommend the trails at Mountain Creek Park just north of Denver, NC. Lots of flow, berms, jumps, drops, rock drops, you name it it’s there. Also, made by the same folks that made Berm Park. If you decide to try it out, hit me up and I’ll join and also supply the post ride refreshments.
Anyone from the Canton area that is involved in making decisions for the city: I have not been there yet but I am definitely interested in going and I would love to see more than I have already seen on video. I'm not sure that my bike is capable to take all of those trails with my skill level so if you have rental bikes available that would be something I would spend money on. When I do eventually get the time and resources to go I will not be coming alone; I will be bringing it at least two friends hopefully more than that.
Lady bird was a ton of fun. That tree in the middle definitely got me on my first run. There was another part I flew off the trail. I still think ridgeline in DuPont takes the cake for best flow trail In NC tho
I work for an airline that fly's into Charlotte. After watching your video .I think in July we will fly in, then rent an Auto-Mobile and hit Asheville , rent bikes from somewhere there and check those dope trails out. Thanks for the vid and the full I.S on the trails that are open.
I just got the chance to ride Ladybug, it was pretty great. You definitely have to be cautious around some of the blind turns but its fun. Took me 8 mins to get down to berm park.
aww man .. I wish I could make it there ... luckily in the west coast of bc we have lots of trails but like NO flow trails in my area haha.. no wait theres 1 and its about 2 mins long

I fell on the skinny at the bottom of bear country. It was covered in grass clippings and was slick as ice.
