I was absolutely gobsmacked at how much space there still is, and how insanely inexpensive real estate is. Yes, I am well aware that basic necessities are far more expensive than on the mainland, and that it is the poorest region in France, etc., but I think it is the perfect alternative for the French Riviera, which I personally have not been able to find anywhere in mainland France.
All I can say for people who would be interested, is that with the warming climate it doesn’t t rain so much in Normandy where I live now. For example yesterday it was pouring and colder but today it is sunny and warm. Weather seems to have change. I went there 30 years ago and it was cold and rainy during July and all day but now it seems to have come to an end...

I'd pick somewhere up in the North in the Pas de Calais area for it's cross-channel links, proximity to Belgium and Holland, and Germany not too far off either. As a result, it's easy to find housing for under 100,000 euros, except in Beaune, which has become a major tourist base. The expatriates I know are enthusiastic at first: “It's pretty, the people are nice, medical costs are very low.” But then they realize that the winters are long, the locals don't speak English well and it's complicated to get medical care because there aren't many doctors left and the nearest hospital is far away. What's more, there's a lot of red tape involved. And they understand that it will be complicated to resell their house as the region is depopulating.
