I’m American and have lived here in Dijon for over 15 years - you’re right, it’s a great place to live! Affordable, easy to get around, great services and amenities, lovely people, all the things you mentioned in your video 😊 Glad you enjoyed your time here 😊
We're in Besancon, just a little bit away. We prefer a smaller city, but we love having Dijon a 50-minute train ride away if we want bigger markets and stores like Ikea. Rare, but it's good to have the option.
Pop Hair is a wonderful and unexpected suggestion. When you are abroad, you need to know a great place to go for a nice cut and, most especially, a good colorist. You both seem very happy and bonded in this video. It looks like you had a great time.
Nice video! We have been living in Dijon for ten years, and we love it. You have portrayed our city pretty much the way we see it every day. We have seen the city center improving gradually over the years. We see quite a lot of tourists (our house is one if the landmarks on the owl tour), and we appreciate them! We have three major shopping malls, all linked by the tramway, but we almost never go there, the center has all the shops we need. We also have some very nice hiking opportunities around, with beautiful hills, cliffs, a lake, rivers, forests, a beautiful botanical garden. A bientôt !
Great video. Thanks for showing people how beautiful Dijon is. I own an apartment there and have been a regular visitor for 13 years. If people want to experience quintessential France, Dijon is the place to be. The Dijonnaise are lovely people and I have always found them very polite as long as I make a good effort to speak in French (and my French is très mauvais!). Some nice towns nearby are Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, Flavigny-sur-Ozerain (where Chocolat was filmed), Semur-en Auxois & Bescancon. Also, there is a Monoprix in the centre of town which is bigger and better stocked than the supermarkets you mention.
Great news, Your video on Dijon helped me to convince my wife that on our next trip to Europe, we need to spend a couple days, at least in Dijon. Thanks again guys. We will visit my daughter in Dusseldorf and our friend in Essen, and then another friend in Luxembourg, and then Dijon, maybe Paris, too and then we will also go to Brussels. All in twenty days. The more time I can get my wife to spend in Europe, the more likely I am to be able to get her to move to Europe. Thanks guys. Now, if I can just get her to visit Albania.
We just arrived here because of your review of Dijon and you nailed it. We have been all over South America and much of Europe now and this is my favorite place. It’s like being in a movie as you walk around the streets. The market with all the fresh fruit and vegetables is amazing. Made me think of Cuenca :-). Anyhow, thanks for this review. I don’t think we would have come here without seeing your TH-cam first. Thank you!
I spent 9 months living in Dijon when I was 21, working at the University. I loved it, the food was so amazing, life was affordable and I found the people friendly. I was so young that I didn't know how good I had it that year and would move back in a heartbeat.
Thank you so much for making this video! We are planning to buy an apartment in France when we retire in 3 years. We have found that Dijon checks all of our required boxes (and then some!). This beautiful city is at the very top of our list as soon-to-be expats.
There are many wonderful towns and villages in France that are not very expensive. Learning the language is part of the fun and excitement of the expat experience. For retired Americans, you have article 18 of the U.S. - French double tax treaty. La belle France!
I lived in Dijon for almost two years while doing my masters degree. Though the rainy weather did get me down sometimes, it was such a lovely and pleasant city that I wouldn’t hesitate to move back!
Dijon sounds like an amazing option for expats! Une ville pleine de charme. As someone who supports expats learning French, I love seeing smaller cities like this being highlighted for their charm and affordability. Your insights about the cost of living and lifestyle are super helpful for anyone considering a move to France. I can definitely see how Dijon could be a great alternative to the bigger cities. Thanks for sharing your experience - it’s sure to inspire others to explore places like this!
I find interesting how you guys look so relaxed and content there. You seem to fit in so well. I like how you present your information. And Amelia sitting in the chair getting her hair done was hilarious!
It looks like a truly magical city...I loved the time I spent in Europe (and working in Spain). I'd go back in a heartbeat if things were different. So for the present, will enjoy your lively and entertaining videos!
3:05 Be careful, you have to touch the owl with your left hand, the hand of your heart, otherwise you'll attract misfortune ! From a Dijon resident who loves this city. 😉
I would like to write to you to share an observation concerning the growing presence of English-speaking visitors and residents in France. It is with sincere pleasure that I see many English speakers settling and visiting our country, thus contributing to its cultural richness. However, it seems to me that many of them make little effort to adapt linguistically, often not speaking even basic French. The French language is at the heart of our cultural identity, and it is essential to promote it to preserve linguistic diversity. I am convinced that everyone would benefit if English speakers in France made more effort to learn and use French in daily life. This would not only facilitate their integration but also encourage a richer and more respectful cultural exchange.
I am a native of English speaker and even when I was just a tourist in France, never lived there, I taught myself basic French just enough to order food and asked where the train station was. Please fellow English speakers do at least that, it is so easy to learn very basic tourist English today by computer by apps, etc. even basic free It’s so much easier to learn basic tourist, French and other languages because of computers and smart phones and TH-cam. :). You don’t have to be perfect in the language just learn how to ask for a coffee and some of the foods

Awesome recommendations! Thanks so much for covering pretty much every question we would have. Wife and I are finishing up our stay in Ireland. Although we are out in the country, it’s been far more expensive for housing compared to what you two have gotten. That you both so very much. Great job.
Loved loved loved this! I felt like I was watching the Amelia & JP version of "Emily in Paris" with the great French background music, etc. Funny story: years ago my brother and I accidentally ended up in Dijon for a few days and we LOVED it there. The people were so friendly. We also went to Beaune for a wine tasting and that was amazing as well. Great video!
@@Mir-wx5ui Thanks for your concern, but I already moved from the US to Europe a number of years ago, and I know how hard it is. Of course Emily is fiction. I was just commenting on Amelia's and JP's production values for this video, which I thought were delightful.
Wow!🤩 I think this was my favorite video yet! You both look so happy and it seemed so effortless. Like Amelia said, you got lost in Dijon. Meaning, you realized that you had to move on. What a wonderful feeling! I loved the owls 🦉😃 I joined your live abroad program and I’m really hoping to invest more time in it soon. I still work a full-time job, but this is important! Dijon looks beautiful. Europe is definitely on my radar. Hopefully as a dual citizen. But even if not, it seems like you and so many people you talk to are making it work. 🎊💗👍🥳 Thank you Amelia and JP!! 👏🫶
Really insightful video. Have never considered Dijon but it looks really attractive as you present it here. France outside of Paris is definitely on our list.
Thanks for the great overview. Dijon sounds like a lovely city. I'm feeling sorry that I slept through high school French class. Now, if Dijon only had a twin sister in southern France with a warmer and sunnier climate 🌞
Albi is also a great place for American Expats, much more sun in Albi than in Dijon that is for sure. Nice Houses still sell in Albi for less than €200,000 euros. Dijon certainly looks like a beautiful city, thank you for the video. The lack of an expat community is actually a plus for my wife and I, as everywhere we have looked into we try to keep our distance from the bigger expat areas.
Your videos and information about cities around the world are priceless. We are shopping for a new country to live in, as I have always dreamed of retiring in Europe. Whenever I want to research a certain location, your videos are my go-to site. The information is very helpful, especially the cost of living, transportation and availability of housing. Your on the ground reporting makes each place you only see a name of on a map of, come alive. Thank you so much for your presentations, and always with a smile..
Well done! I loved your show I never been to Dijon but I’ve been to Beaune I love that place! I would love to go back it’s been over 10 years since the last time I’ve been to France. And that trip I went over to.Colmar too because I prefer the smallest cities and towns! But I felt the people I met spoken English a little or a lot! So I was very lucky! But I was always polite to ask them if they spoke English in French!
Maybe it was my imagination, but you guys seemed more relaxed and at home in Dijon than you have in many other places. Thanks for this video; it opened my eyes to living in France. I assumed that it would be just too expensive to consider, but you showed that it is quite affordable. I guess I have to brush up my high school French!
I have had the best time in France meeting people and they will always help me speak better French. I know how to pronounce things a little better so will give it a try but I always make sure I get the thumbs up that I said right. I’ve learned a little but even the French will admit French is hard to learn but I’m having fun meeting people this way.
We've been to Dijon a couple of times on our travels through France. It's beautiful and well worth a visit. The owl trails a great way to make sure you see everything. This is such an imformative video
On Numbeo a comparison between Dijon and Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, the country where I live, shows that rent in Dijon is 48% lower than in Porto, which is shocking. Most Portuguese have been priced out of the rental market in both Porto and LIsbon. Students now have a really hard time studying in those two cities. But, on the positive side for Porto, restaurants and groceries there are much cheaper. You can have about four cups of coffee in Porto for the price of one in Dijon and two bottles of wine for the price of two. But, workers in Dijon make a lot more money on average than those in Portugal so they can afford the higher prices.
Merci for this video. Years ago I lived in Geneva (NOT affordable) and visited Dijon often. My American expat cousin lives in Dole, near Dijon, and likes it even more. ❤from a big fan , Joanie 🐻 at Lake Tahoe
Hi Joanie! I lived in Tahoe for years! I'm in Reno currently, looking to move to Washington...but every time this lovely couple come out with a video like this I want to return to Europe!
@@feliciasampson8032 Hello Felicia. Since you’re in Reno you’ll know the name of my home, Truckee. I say Tahoe cuz few know about Truckee. Raised my boys at South Shore but it’s changed a lot. Traffic at the Lake is insane now. Outside our little downtown area Truckee is peaceful and the residents are wonderful. Enjoy your next adventure!
@@jaydee45for some reason my last two responses to you vanished! I used to live in Truckee, and Donner Lake. Took my dog to Martis daily. Love the area. Voila , this has a Disneyland feeling to it . I could really see myself living there . I'm already walking around doing a Maurice Chevalier impersonation . Thanks
Love it! But I say if you move somewhere you need to assimilate and try to live in the language of where you are all the time. Moving somewhere and then hanging out in expat areas or when you go out it is with expats...just don't move there. Vacation. Less you are ready to adopt the language fully, you are only a tourist.
been watching your videos off and on for the last 2 years because I love South America. You both look so happy and healthy....and now in Europe! Cool! :) Looking forward to more videos from this part of the world!
Wonderful video! It's a nice change from the large French cities - while I hear that they have their charm, I am equally often hearing about the high prices in cities like Paris.
Thanks, JP & Amelia, for showcasing another beautiful city. I know you put in so much work in making these videos for us. The joys that you share are truly evident in this video of Dijon. Very positive feelings for the city even though their mustard isn't my favorito.
@snewogerg France is among the G7 with one of the most developped Healthcare system. So you cannot compare with Latinamerica. You should compare with other European countries.
Hi ! I am French living close to Dijon. Here is my opinion : Indeed, compared to Lyon, Marseille, or Toulouse... cost of life in Dijon is very cheap. Even if renting flat process is complex in France, Dijon a has cheap price per month (today as I can see, it is around 400 euros per month). The public transport has always been good in Dijon, all parts are deserved and cheap tickets (1,70 euros for 1 hour), I find traways lines was not necessary but... it was Mayor's decision. Beside, there are plenty of pubs, restaurants, museums. I recommand also to visit Dole and Besançon (you can go by direct train for 6 euros one-way ticket). Personnally, I would have prefer to live in the South of France, but that is personal ^^
This was such a nice video and the two of you look so happy in Dijon. This city was not even on my radar but I will add it to my list of places to scout in France. Thanks for sharing
It is so friggin pretty there. I guess if I wanted the easy life and was ready to retire I'd move there but I guess I'm a masochist and want to go somewhere I can work study and struggle a little. Better than being bored and lonely in a gorgeous place.
We spent three weeks in Dijon while on our canal boat last summer and it was also our favorite city of the summer. (Reims was also our favorite from the year before). The Canal du Bourgogne passes through a quiet part of town just south of the fountain that Ameila walked by, and 100 yards from a tram stop. The canal was in some disrepair but was free (usually 10-15 euro in similar places). I'm told that after we left the city started renovating the canal harbor, so it will probably be even nicer but not free. Hotel barges come through there, but they're definitely not free. There are several boat rental companies on the Canal du Bourgogne, but if you rent for a week... most people prefer moving around.
Wow ! It's very funny to see my city throught your eyes :-) You did a lot of things !! By the way, our indian restaurants are not very good compare to most of the english ones but we have some very very good other options and I hope you will come back again, it will be my pleasure to guide you. There is no american community that's true, even if I know an american guy who is living in Dijon, but Americans are welcome in our city.
13:10 This single statement made me head to Google fights after the video and start investigating flight cost in various months. You mentioned Lyon and that’s another location I’ve been really curious about. Great video!!!
About the "dirty" stereotype that seems to pop up in every French bashing conversation, I find France to be much cleaner than most countries I've been to. It certainly is much cleaner than most of the US. Some spots in Paris at specific times can get a little dirty but I'm always surprised when I see videos from "travel influencers" about how filthy Paris is. If Paris is filthy than what can to say about New York or LA? I'd admit that the graffiti situation is a little out of hand but that's pretty much the same thing all over Europe. I blame that on the fact that some treat graffiti as an art instead of throwing the "artists" in jail where they belong for vandalizing the public space.
@@Sayitlikitiz101 Stayed a month in an apartment a street off from the Eiffel Tower. The mostly American tourists left trash every morning while they waited for the tour guides. The streets were cleaned every evening but the number of tourists was overwhelming. As a frequent visitor, I would NOT recommend visiting during the summer.

Thanks for the videos and the tips. You gave us some French food for thought with this one. We may just consider Dijon for our future travels based on this video. Bon Voyage! 🥂
Loved this video! Smaller town France seems so charming, but for sure you'd need to speak more French! I love how Dijon is halfway between Paris and Lyon and not that far from Switzerland. Amelia, what did it cost for a haircut? And how difficult do you think it would be to get residency there? Hugs to you both, bissous! ❤
Good video and vibe. Thank you for showing a less known French city. It is my country but I don’t know this city. Yes this year is a rainy summer but it became very unusual. When I was younger it was not unusual except in the south of France.
Love Dijon and Beaune! We have a small place in a tiny village about an hour drive from Dijon and Beaune. There a many super grocery stores outside the city center like LeClerc, Grand Frais Ahu, Intermarche, Lidl, Monoprix, etc.

Dijon looks much more charming than I expected. I love Beaune, but it's too expensive, so I'll try Dijon next time I'm in Burgundy.
Il est important de savoir parler au moins deux langues. Je parle français, also English y Espanol tambien. Bon voyage en France!
Je suis d'accord.
The city (and region) you must visit is Annecy. Get a car, rent accommodation outside the city because of the price and you will discover paradise!
My brother taught at the U. of Dijon for 2 years. GREAT PLACE! Their daughter had a fever so a doctor made a.....HOUSE CALL! Cost them about....$14!
I think you two should set up at least a semi-permanent base in Dijon -- Amelia, you had a huge smile on your face this entire video 😊😂❤😊😂❤😊😂❤😊😂
Looks wonderful! And a $2000 budget sounds wonderful as well.
I like The Sound of that!!! CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN.
Spent the last part of my life in SLT in Montgomery Estates. Have so many fond memories of powder days, hiking and paddling, etc., it's crazy and $$$ now.
That's cool, I live about 10mins away from Dole, I even worked there a couple times, glad your cousin likes it here.
I live in Dole !
Mon dieu! Your new haircut is beautiful!!! The woman at Pophair is brilliant!
The Pophair person did a really good job. Your hair is beautiful.
Thanks so much!
Wonderful video! It's a nice change from the large French cities - while I hear that they have their charm, I am equally often hearing about the high prices in cities like Paris.
Love the idea of France, especially the food culture. I think I'd want to be more in the south in the winter though. Maybe Toulouse.
We LOVED Toulouse! It's beautiful, and the vibe was relaxed. Definitely a top contender for expats to consider!
Amelia et JP- J’adore cet video que vous avez fait sur la region de Dijon! (No accent availability- tant pis pour moi!)
Merci beaucoup! 😊
@@AmeliaAndJP De Rien! LOL
Beautiful video! The town was certainly impressive for many reasons. Thank you!
Thanks for this! Heading to Corsica then Liguria next week. Looking forward to it immensely!
Thanks, JP & Amelia, for showcasing another beautiful city. I know you put in so much work in making these videos for us. The joys that you share are truly evident in this video of Dijon. Very positive feelings for the city even though their mustard isn't my favorito.
Seems so much nicer than South America. Maybe you can do a video on the differences between Europe and South America for expats and slow travelers.
@snewogerg France is among the G7 with one of the most developped Healthcare system. So you cannot compare with Latinamerica. You should compare with other European countries.
Condo prices are DIRT CHEAP you mentioned compared to the U.S. Wish you could have shown a few.
Hi ! I am French living close to Dijon. Here is my opinion :
Indeed, compared to Lyon, Marseille, or Toulouse... cost of life in Dijon is very cheap.
Personnally, I would have prefer to live in the South of France, but that is personal ^^
thank you, You look so happy there. Dijon looks like a wonderful mix between smaller, quieter ways of living but still diverse, Thanks for sharing.
My favorite of your videos!
It looks like a great way to have a home base while slow traveling Europe
This was such a nice video and the two of you look so happy in Dijon. This city was not even on my radar but I will add it to my list of places to scout in France. Thanks for sharing
Dijon looks beautiful.
Great video! I'd love to live in France and I'm so glad you are doing videos of this lovely country.
Glad you enjoy it!
Great video, watching your travels to get ideas where to go when I retire.
Weather particularly awful this year, that’s why. Nice video
Merci 😊🇫🇷
13:10 This single statement made me head to Google fights after the video and start investigating flight cost in various months. You mentioned Lyon and that’s another location I’ve been really curious about. Great video!!!
Quite a revelation, always focussed on Nice for retirement but it became very expensive. Thank you very much, and warm greetings from Amsterdam.
I loved Paris in June, and would love to visit 4 x per year. No complaints all. Most cities have there areas that could use a little TLC.
My daughter remembers well the amount of dogshit we had to sidestep on the pavement in Paris.
@@SherylWatt may and june are the best months to visit Paris. No heat wave, not as crowded as july and august. Also cheaper. i'm living in paris for 22y and june and december are my fav months
@@burninhell107 thanks so much for sharing. June and Dec are my fav months!
Funny, I have been living 3 hours by train from Dijon for the past 35 years... always wanted to go, and just never got around to it. OK, now I must go!
Great! 😊
Aw, you guys are so cute. Dijon looks lovely.
Great video! We loved the tiny insights like the Amazon delivery. The retro commercials were such a hit with us too… still joking about them 😂🤣 Keep up the great work❤️🔥
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dijon looks lovely, and I didn't realize how convenient it is with the shopping mall and tram. I prefer a somewhat larger city and still have my heart set on living in Lyon someday but I would definitely plan a weekend trip to Dijon. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the videos and the tips. You gave us some French food for thought with this one. We may just consider Dijon for our future travels based on this video. Bon Voyage! 🥂
Another great video!
Thank you for continued good information.
Welcome Guys ;) hope all the best to you !
Hola Connie! The color, cut and dry was €90. France has a long stay visa that works for most people.
By French/European standards Dijon is a big city 🤗
Looking good you guys,enjoying life.
Good video and vibe. Thank you for showing a less known French city. It is my country but I don’t know this city. Yes this year is a rainy summer but it became very unusual. When I was younger it was not unusual except in the south of France.
Wonderful presentation. Thank you very much.
Love Dijon and Beaune! We have a small place in a tiny village about an hour drive from Dijon and Beaune. Dijon is our major shopping trip for household goods and Beaune is our favorite market on Saturdays. Burgundy is a winner! P.S
P.S. There a many super grocery stores outside the city center like LeClerc, Grand Frais Ahu, Intermarche, Lidl, Monoprix, etc.
Très bien! 😄🇫🇷
Dijon is so beautiful. Thank you for taking us along on the "owl tour" with you! 💙🤍❤
Why not visit some of the cities in southwestern France? It's nice and less expensive I believe. Lots of sunshine in the SW.
Awesome video. I was thinking Dijon sounds like a great place to consider, that is until you mentioned the lack of sunshine. I've got to have sunshine.
