What a pleasure to see all 5 guys being honest about the wrangling among the group and more so that they are all able to sit together and reminisce. Things may have been tense at times back in the day but it really shines through that they have mutual respect for each other.
I would imagine that Phil was really up for that and convinced Banks & Rutherford as their friendship never suffered. Phil played on his 3rd album, drummed on his UK tour and was best man at Peters wedding.
I heard a story that during the beginning of rehearsals Pete asked if anyone had contacted Steve & no one replied. At the same time Steve was in South America touring so he may not have been able to make rehearsals. Thank you very much John . . . I cherish the memory of attending this concert back in a very wet November evening and to have your interview to watch is wonderful.
I was at the reunion gig. We were miles form the stage but the rain made the Purple backlight moment in Afterglow one of the most memorable things I've ever seen.
Thank God for Steve. The last man in stand from Genesis, playing around the world this music, thats amzing, the rest of members never palying the same way this music, leave behind all this and prefer the music "POP". Long live Genesis "The Peter Gabriel Era"
Pleased to find this commiseration. I was living for a number of years in Aylesbury, Bucks while Milton Keynes was being constructed, so to speak. Big listener to Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins. I recall thanking God for my ears to hear those sounds in my teen age years where I was totally frustrated with the world around me, yet enlivened by the sounds being collaborated by these individuals that made me feel totally grateful for hearing the music.
Thanks John, these interviews and takes always get my attention… 😊 All together in what comes across as a natural conversation between old friends (which we know they are)…. with you putting a couple of questions as it is meant to be, these are always a joy to watch 😊
I was at the concert in 1982 and it just pissed down all day long. Was absolutely soaking wet, but it was fabulous nevertheless, (and I ended up with flu for about the next month! - probably unrelated) lovely to see all of them together and getting on and it would’ve been great if they could’ve perhaps done one more joint album, perhaps impossible but at least they’re not as hostile as Roger and David from another band I happened to have been a fan of for the last 50 years.
👍👏👌 pour ces interviews de qualité John ...ils retiennent toute mon attention...ça fait chaud au cœur ❤ de voir les 5 compères réunis et souriants 😃 😉😍👋✌❣🇧🇪
I heard a few times from several sources over the years that musically it wasn't up to snuff, but I heard the bootleg on here a few days ago, recording quality isn't great but they all played excellently. I didn't recall one "ooooh, that was rough" moment. Even Peter's drumming on Turn It On Again, wasn't really noticeable as Chester was with him keeping fort.
Back in the days when tickets were not only cheaper but, pre-internet, a lot easier to get hold of, and they didn't 'dynamically price'. Can't imagine I would have been able to get hold of a ticket nowadays with T###master or similar. Despite the rain and the lack of rehearsal, an absolutely unforgettable evening (though probably not for Talk Talk who were bottled off!)
Great stuff. Glad that the liquidators didn’t get the 10 percent. I believe Steve had a gig earlier and flow in to do the on core. Mike was the one who push it not to filmed but there are plenty of audio recordings the one surprise of that show for me was no custom for Peter to portray the songs.
I still have the programme and ticket stub for this. Like it was only yesterday. In a funny way Phil's remarks about no mobile phones back then is somewhat a blessing. People who spend entire shows with arms held up filming is pretty sad and also fu@king annoying!! In hindsight they should have filmed it properly with the proceeds also going to the WOMAD cause. For me this concert still remains top of the pile of genesis shows I've seen. Even if the weather and sound quality was awful. Well what do you expect in October. Thanks for posting. 😊
I saw the HBO interview but I never saw this before. Interesting insight and sadly the show was never videotaped but at least you have someone who was smart enough to record it.
I heard a story that during the beginning of rehearsals Pete asked if anyone had contacted Steve to be part of the reunion & no one replied. At the same time Steve was in South America touring so he may not have been able to make rehearsals. In his book Steve says his dad had heard the band were reuniting for a one off gig but he doesn’t say how his dad found out. Either way, dick move. No Genesis reunion without Steve in my view.
So, we have Peter 'perfect' to blame for this legendary concert Never being filmed in any shape or form, as he said he was against the idea due to his perfectionist streak.
The amazement about the turnout and stoicism of the audience in that one-time reunion says a lot about the fact that these great musicians still don't quite understand the greatness of what they've composed. I don't think there's a venue that could serve the attendance, if such a reunion was possible, today. But it's OK. Many others have failed to understand their own relevance in their living years.
There are a few on here. Search for ‘Genesis Six of The Best’. Quality and bass levels vary, but there are one or two that are listenable and catch the spirit of the day nicely.
@@jimw6659 the rehearsals from the Hammersmith Odeon are also available and those are soundboard quality. It gives you an impression of how they sounded and where they were coming from.
Genesis did not document their magnificent career adequately (or at least the parts with Gabriel in it). No one bothered to engage a cameraman to capture this event for the ages. Just as no one filmed a "Lamb" concert in reasonable quality. It is infuriating.
Sometimes, also on YT, I am impressed how vastly many photos were made of them (recordings, bootlegs as well). Avidly interested for decades and I still discover tons of pics I've never seen.
Thanks. Can u please tell me if there is a cd from inglewood performance ?The best medley of in the cage and supper’s ready I have ever heard.I think ‘86
That was WOMAD full of idealism and not too much practical wisdom - absolutely brilliant but a disaster at the box office generating death threats Genesis very generously agreed to do this one off thing stuck in the middle of touring - PG
I have a problem with my favourite group: listening to interviews, I can decipher 95% of what Peter or Steve say, but only just above a half of what fast-speaking Tony or Phil say and maybe a third of what words-swallowing Mike says. Am I alone in that difficulty? By the way, Mike's rainproof jacket doesn't really ooze rock vibe, does it? ;-) I'm not sure Lemmy would wear one on stage.
Ouch, some of the body language observed… reveals lingering & difficult feelings - and this would include Steve not being in the frame for 80% of this clip … 😢 ugh
