This is the Astroworld I loved! The Astrowheel, the Alpine Sleighs, The Toboggan, The Model T cars and of course the astroneedle. While I embraced the roller coasters as I got older, the fond memories of the old rides remain. RIP Astroworld, We were blessed to know you.
OMG, the Astrowheel, Swamp Buggy, River of No Return, Le Taxi, Alpine Sleighs, Astroneedle, even think I saw Rub-a-dub from one of the cable car shots... and the complete LACK of anything else around it except for the dome and the Astroworld Hotel. Way cool.
@coasterguy You are so right, this is way cool. This video makes me remember my childhood like it was yesterday. Rub a Dub, the toboggan ride, the Black Dragon. They bring back so many memories.. I remember being chosen to steer the boat on River of no Return and freaking out when the guide told me to steer to the right and the boat went to the left. This video almost makes me want to cry.
I've been to this park several times growing up. The last time was in 1996 before I began college at LSU. I cannot believe this amusement park is gone. This brings back a lot of memories.
The first time I went to Astroworld was in 1969? I was like 5 years old when I visited Astroworld. I have worked for Astroworld for 2 1/2 seasons starting in 1980. I have ride the Thunder River for free in 1980. It was one of the best job for a teenager. If you want pick up a new girlfriend, make new friends, and have some fun without breaking the law. Astroworld was the place.
Excellent video. Makes me wanna go back in time to the days when Astroworld was still great. The demise of the park had nothing whatsoever to do with city management, KLOL or anything else. the problem was that in the past 10 years or so before it closed, Six Flags continued to charge more and more to get in and just completely failed to maintain the park or the rides and it became totally overrun with thugs.
My favs were Alpine Sleigh ride, Xcalibur, Grease Lightening, the dome building were you laid on the floor and felt like you were floating in space, XRL8, The Viper. Texas Cyclone was rough riding...but it was nostalgic to the park. I remember going to my first concert at the Southern Star Amphitheater - Howard Jones 1987 and then also New Kids on the Block/Tiffany 1989. Studio A a teen dance club where it was shown on channel 2's Videocity on Friday nights. 93Q did live broadcasting. This was around 1986-87. Some great memories at this park...I wish I could of shared it with my kids.
I blame the school districs for astroworld closing. Before the new law was passed last year, they had cut the summer vacation down to 2 months causing places like astroworld to loose money in the month of ausgust.
I was there in 1970 when i was 5 with my parents and grandparents! I rode that spiral tree trunk roller coaster w my dad and grandpa. We went on Alpine Sleigh Ride and got scared to death! Then we went for a drive on the antique cars. The track made a loop next to the Alpine Mountain. I started screaming and jumped out of the car and running away! My dad had to chase after me. In 2005 before it closed, my mom took a picture of my dad and me in the antique car. It was such great memories.
Good memories...thanks for posting. The Alpine sleigh ride was my favorite, now I can see it again! Wish you had footage of the Obama, I mean abominable snowman.
In 1969 when I was 13 a buddy and me took the Harrisburg bus from Eastend into town then transferred to the S Main street bus to get to Astroworld. We paid our admission from the money we earned working catering parties at Lenox bbq. We hadn't been there an no more than an hour when Gary dared me while we were on the skyride to drop our cups of Coke on the people walking around, lucky for us when they hit the ground all they did was miss some old lady in her 30's. We'll needless to say one of the park security guards met us as we got off the ride. After taking us to an office and telling us how we could have hurt someone, he escorted us out of the park. We couldn't understand why we were not allowed to get part of our money back after being there only an hour. And by far the worst part was that we hadn't even ridden the Bamboo Shoot or the Alpine Mountain sleigh ride.

suqnswallow the alpine sleighs were my fave! We'd ride them over and over!
@@cbar65a me too! if you needed cooling off - just go on the Alpine Sleigh Ride! The cold blast of air inside was exhilarating!!!
@@KaleidoscopeMagic my buddy Shannon and I tried to break the record for rides in a row! We got to 11 once
@@cbar65a Very nice!

coasterguy don't forget the bamboo shoot!😜
River of no Return!! Yes I remember that...I think they tore it down to make room for Thunder River perhaps.

Thanks for sharing this. I remember hearing about the film on the message boards. This is the era I really missed, by only a couple years though!
Wow!! If you look at 610 from the needle ride...no traffic and all land. How things change so much..
I remember riding the Thunder River and getting
completely drenched. Fun times.
I remember riding Thunder River wearing white shorts...not a good combo! hehe

What year was this filmed? It looks like the early 1970s. I wish my parents had done home movies of Astroworld, like this one. Now it's just a memory.
Amazing. Thanks for uploading this !

This had to have been taken between 1971-1972, as the Swamp Buggy ride (my favorite!) was gone by 1973.
I remember taking that swamp ride in 1980...the boat ride thing if that is what you are referring to
TRAVIS WILL BRING YOU BACK.

That has nothing to do with city management. Thats corporate bs that has no regard for anything but the mighty dollar
Not even a parking lot. Just an empty field of grass :(
