Southern Star Amphitheater - saw my first concert there in 86. Astroworld had a teen dance club - Studio A that channel 2 KPRC would air us dancing on Videocity after Saturday Night Live. To this day, I have two albums that they handed out free one night - Pretty In Pink and Wang Chung
I have so many memories going to Astroworld and Waterworld growing up and I thought one day I would take my own children there so that they could explore all the excitement that I once enjoyed. When you walked through those gates you were transported to a magical place. I remember wearing fanny packs (LOL) to keep all our valuables in and I will never forget the first time I went on a rollercoaster. At night everything lit up and they put on a firework show just before closing. We would stop on our way out at a souvenir shop and I would always get one of those big rainbow lollipops. I was so jealous because in high school the class before me had their prom and after words the school always has an optional lockdown. Well, lucky for them theirs was at Astroworld. The rest of the school was so jealous and my class being the next to graduate we thought we would get to have our lockdown there as well. Needless to say I was wrong. The entire park was not open for them. Just certain rides and areas. They were lucky to experience what very few have ever have. Waterworld was fun too. Full of fun, adventure and waterslide memories. Along with all the other wonderful attractions they had. Honestly, I like Splashtown better. Then the day came when the gates would close for one last time. The developer who had brought the land had big plans and it's upsetting that those plans didn't work out. Now, it's just a dirt lot where Astroworld and Waterworld once were. A gravesite just sitting there. He took away and destroyed so many memories and the dreams that those that went there as children would one day bring their children there to relive a precious childhood memory. Who knows maybe my grandchildren would of been able to experience it but, no those dreams are shattered. We can never get back what was once there but, one thing they will never be able to take away from us our the memories we spent there. Boy, how I miss it and I how I hate driving by it now. Kenny thank you for capturing this magical place where the fun never ended (until they tore in down.) This makes my memories come to life and although I can't take my children there I can at least show them the video that you so thoughtfully put together. Gone but, never forgotten. Thank you again for a trip down memory lane.
oh god. im so lucky I grew up as a child in the 90s and got to experience AstroWorld . We didn't go often cuz my mom didn't like going out in the houston heat but the times I did get to go I treasured. I used to go to LL Pugh Elementary school and they would take us here at the end of the year if we had perfect attendance. I never missed a day of school just to go here lol.
Great video Kenny Ryman! I was a Coaster mechanic there for 15 years. I was at the Texas Cyclone on October 31, 2005 for the very last cycle. The ride ran flawlessly, I watched it till the end. Thank you for the memories!!! I had a lot of FUN there!
My dad took me here the first time I visited him after my parents' divorce. It was one of the best days of my life. I'm so sad the park closed. It will always be open in my heart, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, until the end of time.
I went the last day it was open at 28 years old. Such a sad day. I went there my entire childhood. Summer season pass every year. Now, I only get to share that time through TH-cam videos with the kids. So heartbreaking I can't take them. I guess Fiesta Texas or the one is Dallas is our best bet. Still wont be the same. That was awesome! My first time there was just after it opened. My last time there was in the early 90's. I wasn't a regular later on but spent a lot of summers there when I was younger. My first admission ticket was $5.00. My last admission was $25.00 with tickets that I bought over the phone and had to wait until they arrived. I have missed, and will always miss, that great part of my fun life.

What an awesome collection of films/videos of everything that was Astroworld. I went there first on vacation in 1971 and then practically every weekend after I moved to Houston in late-1977. Towards the end, however, Astroworld seem to attract a disproportionate collection of thugs and miscreants that made going to the park increasingly less safe. Unlike Chicago’s Riverview which made far more money selling the land than the park could make while open, Astroworld was sold for pennies on the dollar upon closure. Almost 15 years later, it remains an empty lot with minimal use for Rodeo storage and overflow parking - three weeks of the year.
Thanks for posting this. The first time I went to Astroworld was when I was a little kid in the late 60's. Back then, the old time Model T looking cars were near the Alpine Village. The track near the Texas Cyclone had sports cars. Later they got rid of the track for the old cars for a new ride and moved the old cars near the cyclone. When I was kid the biggest roller coaster was the Dexter Freebish which was later named Excalibur. In Alpine village there was a ride called the Alpine Sleigh Ride. It was kinda like a roller coaster. I remember this one cave you went through called echo cave. There was a sign saying "say something." Wehn you went into the next cave you heard everything that was said in echo cave. Back then, when it was still owned by Harris County, when you were standing in line for a ride you were in air conditioned cool air. As soon as six flags bought it, that was 86'd. We went every summer when I was a kid. The last time I was there was when I brought some kids there in the mid 90's. Great times. Thanks so much for posting this video.
Thanks for posting. I remember going in the early 70s, and 80s, then as an adult in the early 90s. I remember the sports cars and taxis. The first time riding the alpine sleigh ride, my mom lost her purse around the time the abominable snow man appeared. They had to stop the ride to retrieve it. Do you also remember some bumper cars (or boats) as it was in the water? I loved it more before Six Flags took it over. Astroworld will also hold a special place in my heart for all the fun and wonder it delivered to me growing up.

(where to get free stuff-short lines-etc. (-best memory -I went tubing down the "Bamboo Shoot" on a closed day) not over the big drop of course.

I walked all over Astroworld in red cowboy boots before finally getting to the back corner where Batman was. I don’t know if the boots did the trick, or if maybe my dad greased the palm of the ride operator, but at 7 years old I got to ride Batman The Escape. I didn’t even mind the foot blisters when I got home.
Wow lots of memories at that place, always had a season pass and saw many great concerts there. When a ride was brand new we use to wait up to five hours! Thunder river, xlr8, Batman we got stuck on it once, the skyscreamer, the bamboo shoot was the make out ride especially at night. Towards the end though it was a lot of thuggish kids and not very family oriented. We actually use to take acid and go to fright night. I miss those days :(

Kenny Ryman ...I think the problems began when Judge Roy Hofeinze passed away. KLRN ( Public Television ) has a great documentary on The Astrodome, Astroworld, and Astro Turf. The judge had a vision. You can get a copy if you so choose in San Antonio. The train in Atroworld was just on TV on Strange Inheritance. It can be seen on Utube. Thank you for posting. I went there and my children went there many times. Best of times.
Parking issues, gang issues, and the CEO believed that the land was worth $150M. They spend $20M to demolish the amusement park. The land only sold for $77M. The executives and investors were so upset with the lose of money and potential for profit. That they fire the CEO. So basically Six Flags Lose money and Houston residents were left without a amusement park. All For what? Because they thought they could pay off their debt with the sell of the property lot? 🤦♂️

I wish if for a last resort it was just closed and left shut down, not torn down. Maybe future investors could have salvaged and created a reimagined AstroWorld for a new generation.....at least given them a chance at what so many of us will never forget and always love.

why did it close?
Parking issues, gang issues, and the CEO believed that the land was worth $150M. They spend $20M to demolish the amusement park. The land only sold for $77M. The executives and investors were so upset with the lose of money and potential for profit. That they fire the CEO. So basically Six Flags Lose money and Houston residents were left without a amusement park. All For what? Because they thought they could pay off their debt with the sell of the property lot? 🤦♂️

I just hope that the upcoming Grand Texas will be an awesome place once it's completed.
