As first my first year at the University of Toronto comes to an end I wanted to make a video about things I would have liked to know before going to UofT, and I wanted to talk about all the things I hear other people say about UofT and whether they are true or not. This video made me feel sm better. I listed UofT Life Sciences at Victoria college as my first choice when I applied recently and all I've been hearing is ''have fun crying every day and having no friends'' or ''you must not care about your mental health'' which kinda discouraged me but I feel a lot better after watching this video tysm!1 Hopefully I'll get to experience frosh week and go to parties in September when Covid dies down.

Hey! This is a great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. I think it’ll help a lot of people. I like how you take all the stereotypes and share your own experiences with them. I am in first year too and went to U of T and mostly agree with what you said. However, since many people viewing this video will be those who are deciding whether or not to go to U of T, I thought I’d share my own experience too just to get a different perspective out there too. I was in Woodworth college which is apartment style and I had 3 roommates. I was also in the life science program. Unlike you, I didn’t end up liking my experience at U of T and transferred to Dalhousie University for my second semester.
In life, most of what happens to us and what we experience is because of luck and university is no exception. Although I’ll be talking about my experience and what I noticed to be the general trend, your luck can change any aspect of it. The people in your res, the people you meet, the profs you have, a lot of it is just luck. Now, here are some points I came up with:
(Most of my high school friends go to McGill, OttawaU, Queens, Western and Dal so when I refer to other universities it’s these that I have gotten to know through my friends.)
Ranking: By far this is the biggest reason people go to U of T. It plays a big role in everyone’s decision. But what a lot of people don’t know is that unlike US schools, universities in Canada are very standardized throughout the whole country. Meaning the content you learn throughout your four years is very similar between different universities and rankings between schools play a very minor to no role at all in decisions made by grad schools, professional schools, and employers. I have learned this through friend’s parents and people who have gone through this process. What does play a bigger role to employers is more what grad school/professional school you go to. That’s why U of T is much better for things other than undergrad and where it tends to focus its resources and opportunities. Also for higher levels of education having a higher gpa (which is easier at most other schools) will help more than the prestige of the school.
Social Life: Thanks for showing U of T students do have social lives (unlike what some people say) and sharing your res experiences. However, the biggest problem with social life at U of T is the huge commuter population and the ripple effects that that causes. About 75% of U of T students are commuters (thevarsity.ca/2018/09/24/the-breakdown-commuter-resources-on-campus/) Which is much higher than I expected. This means 75% of students aren’t anywhere near campus on the weekends or after school making it extremely difficult to become friends with them or for them to become friends with other people. Commuters are also less likely to consistently come to class cuz of snowy days, transit delays, too tired to go on a long commute, so you are less likely to consistently see them in class. There is also a huge international population (not just “Asian” as a lot of people say) which is amazing to learn from different cultures and make friendships with people you won’t meet anywhere else but this can also lead to people making friend groups based off their ethnicity or language making it harder for other people to spend time with those groups. The residences are also very far apart compared and don’t share dining halls (ex: UC students can’t go eat at vic without a guest pass) this makes it very hard to bump into people or make/see friends in other residences. Because you are less likely to make connections easily people have to put in more time and energy for connections that happen much more easily at other schools.
*Also very important, different programs are very different socially. I took poli sci as my elective and people were much more social.
Party Life: Yes you mentioned how there are parties and people who like to party! This is a big misconception. Some residences that are more relaxed about parties than others. However, I’ve never seen a full res party they are often just a pre for frat parties, which can be fun but are far more dangerous than any other school. First of all downtown Toronto is not the safest place for house parties with so many strangers and cars going by you can feel unsafe. I won’t go too much into detail but a frat party that I waited in line for but didn’t end up going into had a stabbing where 1 person died (www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/victim-dies-halloween-party-stabbing-toronto-1.5346029). Res parties are much more of thing at other schools especially Dal and houses that have parties are on much safer streets. Also for commuters, it’s very hard for them to be able to come near campus at night and commute back late at night.
Academics: You mention how your grades drop at every university which is very important for people to understand. But they will significantly drop more at U of T than most other schools and that’s not just because its “harder”. One is because of the high commuter percentage, commuters lose a lot of their time to just going to school and coming back home. Also as I said since friendships are harder to make, it causes students to have to put in more effort to make/maintain these friendships making you lose time for studying and not having a stable social life, which affects academics more than most people think. This causes a lot of students to give up on social lives and focus on academics. A huge difference I found between U of T and Dal was the amount of support you get from your TAs and Lab TAs at Dal. They’re more likely to go out of their way to help you and are much more approachable. As I said Canada is very standardized so I found the amount of content in each course to be pretty similar but you do get more difficult assignments and labs at U of T.
As you said I too was very scared of the whole “everyone’s competitive” mentality that I had heard. But that was not the case. The friends I had made were very helpful and friendly. However, having residences that were very far apart compared to other schools and so many commuters I found it very hard to be able to get together and help each other out
Community: Since it’s such a big campus with such a big commuter population, the sense of a community and pride or a real university experience is not big at all at U of T. People often aren’t too proud of where they go to school and there’s no day to celebrate the school like homecoming at other schools. Also, the size lowers the number of times you bump into people which is a big deal when it comes to making friends.
Mental Health: Unfortunately, mental health is a huge issue at the school that I did not know about. It’s too big of a topic for me to put here but a quick google search about U of T and mental health will give you a quick picture.
Campus: Let’s be real probably the most beautiful and best located campus in Canada (I’ll give it that).
Conclusion: I am definitely much happier at Dal and don’t regret going to U of T it taught me a lot about myself and the world. But whoever is deciding where to go please pick somewhere you think you will be happy that should be your main focus and don’t focus on what your friends or your family will think, it’s your decision. And please don’t underestimate how important friendship and being social is. University isn’t just about studying and getting a degree. University really is one of the last stages in life where friendship and being social comes easily so you want to make the most out of that and make genuine friendships that will last. ( and yes that can be U of T, everyone’s experience is different but it’s just more difficult at U of T)

Thank you for writing this. I got accepted to dal and I am waiting for a response from u of t and queens. U of t is my first choice but I am doing more research and I am just not sure. My mom really wants me to go if I get accepted because she went and enjoyed it so much. I am honestly considering going to dal though. Could you maybe tell me more about your experience there? What is the social life/community like? What made you want to go there?

@@rebeccahonour9555 Hi Rebbeca! haha no worries happy to hear my rant is helpful. Transferring can definitely limit some of your options especially in between semesters of your first year, so I had missed a few of the deadlines for some universities when I wanted to transfer. My top choice was queens cuz a lot of my high school friends went there and really liked it but transferring my credits to queens was hard and it didn't seem like it would work out. But dal had always been in the back of my mind because my mom went to dental school there and my family used to live there and I had a couple high school friends who were at dal and really liked it so I went through with it. In terms of social life and community, it was a massive change. People were a lot more social and partying in residence was much more of an option than at U of T and I definitely felt a lot more safe partying in res compared to the U of T frathouses, where most first years go. Also just the fact that the campus and the student population is smaller means that the people you bump into in class or the library, you're more likely to know them from res or social clubs and small things like that really help you to get know people. It's definitely much less of a commuter school. Many students do live in the student ghetto and the ones who do live at home do not have to commute as crazy far, so it's easier to maintain friendships with them. It's not as diverse as U of T but still a lot more diverse than I thought it would be. The rent is still pretty high in halifax but definitely nowhere near Toronto levels. I also find the professors are a lot more approachable and more understanding. Things like hoco really make it feel like much more of a community. Dal still does have its challenges, it's not perfect but I am still happy I made the change. I know the pandemic has really changed things, but please let me know if you have any more questions and good luck with grade 12 and your applications!

I think it's also important to mention that certain majors being super difficult isn't UofT specific as well. The notable ones I hear people talk about are computer science, engineering, and life sciences. Like these majors are hard in UofT... and like every other university that exists...

This video is great! I've been accepted to UofT for Arts in UC. Can you please do a video or comment on the different buildings in UC residence. I know that Morrison Hall is all singles and is supposed to be pretty nice and not too old. But I wonder if it would be less social than other UC buildings. I don't know who I'd be matched with for a roommate, and it's sort of less risk to have a single room. Do you have a roommate or were you in a single room in first year? What do you think of Morrison vs. the other UC buildings? Any comments greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Hey!! I was actually in Morrison and I honestly found it to be quite social, but it was also cause I got put in a rather social floor. UC separates you into houses and I noticed that each house has generally similar students, and I think its because they make everyone fill out the roommate application (so like questions about yourself) and they try and put students who are similar on the same floor. That said, I had friends in Whitney hall as well who I met during frosh, which I add as a reminder that not all your friends will be from the same building. I personally loved having a single room, and pretty much all my friends had single rooms.

Hopefully you're still active because I was wondering how you would weigh UBC against U of T?
I toured both and UBC just felt more inviting to me (the environment helps a LOT) and I've heard that UBC in general has a much stronger community. Plus, the idea of going out west is just more appealing to me but I also realize that U of T is stronger rankings-wise. If you could help me in my dilemma I would be so very thankful.
UBC accepts only 4 years degree Bachelor courses, sed life!
UBC is really pretty and I obvs love the west coast (from here originally) but pls remember its gray and raining like 8 months of the year, not that it should be a major factor but lots of people choose UBC for the nice scenery not realizing that the reality is different for most of the year. Honestly go where you think you will feel happy, I was deciding between Mcgill and UofT and I chose UofT because I had a gut feeling that it was where I needed to be when I toured it. Seems like you had a similar feeling about UBC so I say go for it!! Also rankings are kinda dumb at the end of the day, also sorry for taking a while to respond!

Yeah!! However people who arent a part of the college system tend to b put in Chestnut Res which is technically off campus, but a part of UofT. I know most engineers are there, however music students are there as well. The other option is Campus One, which isnt UofT res, but its across the street from front campus and its mostly UofT students living there

Great video! Just got in for fall ‘21, social sciences, university college. one thing that scares the crap out of me is class sizes. What is the smallest class you’ve had? Coming from USA.
smallest I've hadst far (I just finished first semester of second year) is 30 students, largest I've had is 1500, however it is important to note that for huge classes you have tutorials with a TA that range from 5-30 students and you go over course material there. But in general a lot of universities have large class sizes, unless you go to a very small one.

Hey, I was wondering if you know any English major and could tell me something about it. Like, my country's education system is kinda different so I can't say much, but I'd say I get 85-95% in English and science and 70-80% in subjects like social science. Do you think a major in English or book and media studies be too difficult for me?
Hey! I know I couple English majors and they enjoy it, its a lot of reading and writing tho so as long as ur okay with that then id say its good! its a bit hard to tell when it comes to high school grades as everywhere works different, but id say if you really like English then go for it!

Hey!! I actually had a few friends at new and spent a decent amount of time there, however they all were in 45 willcocks. There was definitely a social scene, but I do know that their rules on dorm parties are much stricter then at UC so it was more common for them to get shut down

alina kouzouian honestly if u aren’t in University College, New is the next best one to be in, in my opinion (obvs im biased to UC lol) and the food is actually pretty good at the New college residences
btw are vic one programs worth it or is it too much pressure for first year? And if they ARE worth it, my application got accepted for Schawlow which I ranked second in preference while Stowe-gullen was my first preference because I will be studying Life Science. Should I still accept the offer?
hey, so I actually don't know much about the first year ones programs for any of the colleges, I wasn't in any and I didn't know anyone who was. I can't really see why it wouldn't be a good idea, but if you are looking for other opinions I suggest checking reddit cause there tend to be threads on stuff like this. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

Hey!! Im glad you liked the video. I actually had one of my best friends help me brainstorm things to say for this video and he’s a computer engineer! He’s in pretty much all the photos and videos I added so I’d say that a lot of this (especially the social aspect) can be applied to eng as well :)

Hey! Honestly, I’m no too sure if uoft even has a proper journalism program, but I gotta say that I’ve heard that ryersons program is one of the top journalism ones, so in this case I think id suggest checking out ryerson a bit more

Hey!! I’m double majoring in History and Political Science, and I chose uoft in part for its rankings for my program, however I was also able to visit the school before hand and I really liked the campus, plus living in downtown Toronto sounded amazing. I also chose it cause it seemed like the right for for me, and I really liked the courses offered and when I researched the profs, I liked the reviews I read and the work they’ve done

I applied for humanities at uoft as well but am not sure if I’ll get in. if you don’t mind me asking, did you have a high average or is meeting an 80 ish average good?
Hey!! I had an average in the 90s in high school, however my friend got into uoft with an average of around 84. A lot of it depends on the other people who are applying and their averages as well
Thank you! Also, do you happen to know about repeated courses in grade 12? For example, if a prerequisite is needed for a specific program and i did it twice to upgrade my mark, does it lower my my chances into getting in. I feel like it does and don’t know anyone in the same circumstance.
@@alexandraameduri3118 hey sorry I didn't see this before. Usually for repeated courses universities average out the two grades, or take the higher one. Most unis average them out though

4. Do officials come and check your room for like discipline-checks or something?
5. Is it peaceful or noisy at night?
6. Are there bullies at UofT in general?
7. Do you have to pay for any kind of damage that you make to the room?
8. Are people allowed to stay over-night in your dorm?
9. Is the security system safe?
10. Do you get the time to work part-time for money
11. Are pets allowed in the dorm?
12. Is there a dress code or can you wear whatever you want?

Hey could you please explain what do you mean by colleges
UofT St George campus works on a college system for people applying to the faculty of arts and science. It has nothing to do with your academics, its sort of like your hogwarts house because its where u eat sleep and study (if you live in dorms). UofT has this system in place due to the large number of undergrad students, and it makes resources more accessible.
What was your high school average to get accepted to uoft?
I had a 95 average, but I know people who got in with 88+ averages! it all depends what program and where you are applying from

Hey!! So I’m actually in both humanities and social science since I’m in two majors. But basically with a degree in social sciences u can do pretty much anything, since a lot of it depends what u end up majoring in (such as econ, sociology, political science etc). Its very common for people to want to go to law school/other types of grad school as well. Idk how helpful this was but i hope it cleared it up a bit!!

a lot of facts in this video are super inaccurate. it might be u have poor judgement or cuz ur major is not on of the serious ones like life sci, eng, or business . UofT is highly ranked in canada and globally because of the standard it provides in its faculty and the standard it holds in expectations. UofT cannit be considered the same in workload as places like guelph, humber, or ryerson. Those are less academically focused unis compared to uoft. Being in arts yes, it is easy anywhere. However in business, they accept 1300+ in first year and only 300 get accepted in to the program for second year. UofT is a research based academic university and it is harder to perform well here compared to other universitys. So dont speak to uoft overall. Speak as an art major .

Hello, U of T computer engineer here. Believe it or not, everything in this video is true. If you go to u of t and have time management skills that are better than the average toddler, you can succeed as well as have a great time. Not sure how your u of t experience is going, but it sounds like it's a little too much for you to handle. In that case, I'd recommend taking summer courses or speaking to an academic advisor to discover what's best for you. Wishing you all the best on your academic journey!

love these defensive guard dogs. U misunderstood. UofT targets at students with motivation and aspirations. You put in effort to anything and you can do well . UofT just requires you to have that focus and organization in your life to do well unlike some other universities. To say that the its the same effort as other universities may be for some easier major not all of them . Hope that clarifies it.
