  • Yet another project getting started. This time it is a Fiat 128 that has been sitting in the corner of my shop for quite some time. In this video I give a quick tour of the car and discuss some high level plans I have for it.

Nice to be a part of your channel..awesome to see these videos and looking forward to more..I live in an area that was known as Little Italy, with a Fiat dealer right in the neighborhood, and grew up seeing these here and there..specifically an italian TV repair man that had two of them, a yellow 4 door and a red 2 door, possibly Rally...i remember being at his house wanting the red one, but my mother wouldnt hear of it..i was about 13 or so...ive wanted one since those days..

" I arrive in Germany. Volkswagen Research Centre. It was January 1970. In the center of a huge room was a 128 completely disassembled and sectioned, piece by piece. I ask for explanations and they candidly answer that they will never be able to make a car with such refined mechanics at such a low price. For this the Golf will have to be smaller. "
In short, the 128 was their reference car.
    Great car

Back in the 1980's-90's I was a Service Manager at a "Fiat-Lancia Factory Authorized Parts And Service Center". I owned a 1974 128 Wagon, '75 X1/9 and a 1972 850 Spyder (AGahh!) . I liked the 128 Series vehicles. Nice to see this video, by a knowledgeable Fiat owner. "New timing belt every 30,000 miles!

Excellent introduction, I read your brief thread in the Grassroots Motorsports forum about the Rally. I just found a 128 Familiare Panorama after missing out on others over the years. Going up to drag her home on Monday! Subbed!

Owned a 74' 2 dr Green. Great ride bought used and rebuilt the engine and drove until the the wheels literally fell off(Got home from a trip and the left rear wheel well had rusted around the shock and the wheel was drifting out. the body was swiss cheese but sold the engine! Road great; narrow front wheel drove through the snow with ease. Comfortable seats and room for trips, friends and luggage. 😀👍

My family had a 4 door 128 for my older sisters to drive in the 80s. I see that this is an older video, but my only advice is to buy 2 or 3 clutch cables ASAP, put them in the trunk and forget about them. 😉

Has to be a 75 model. My dads first car that became my first car. 1100cc in pistachio green colour. We repainted it in a dark green colour and put on a ritmo 1500cc engine around 1985

Great find! Like you said, you don't see these in the U.S. anymore.
I've had two of them. A '71 and a '74, which I turned into a European Rally clone and own currently.
    I got a 1500 from a Strada and stroked it to a 1600.

Fiat raised the 128 in 74 to meet bumper regs, you can cut the front springs to lower it 1.5-2 inches and use washers on the leaf spring ends to drop the rear. the FAZA book from MWB is a hot mess of word vomit, but has a lot of good info nuggets.

My first car was a yellow Fiat 128 4-door in 1973. Paid $2,648.89 new. We used to wave at each other whenever we saw another one on the road. Loved the manual choke, the spare wheel in the engine compartment, and flat floor. Threw a rod once and the front wheel support rusted away in 1982 at the 66,508 mile mark.

My first car in 1982 was a 1976 128 3p. It started its U.S. residency in New Jersey and suffered from road salt before it made its way to California. By 1988 the undercarriage succumbed to structural rust and went to the dismantlers. Fun at times but a total money pit 💸💸💸

I had that model in that colour in NZ in the early 80s. Great little driver. You’ll be fine without bumpers from a safety point of view. Lucky to find one so rust free. I like the wheels you’ve got it on.

In the mid to late 80's I used to race a 1971 2 door 128 sedan in club races.
The car was also legal on the street , and my daily driver.
The original 1100 engine made 55HP , after my modifications it made a genuine 100HP at the wheels.
It's top speed was over 120MPH.
It was never beaten on the track by any other road registered car that came up against it.
These are astoundingly good and strong engines , able to regularly spin to 8500RPM using stock bottom end parts.
Be careful of weak bodies. (common)
With one hand on the steering wheel , and the other hand on the corner of the front fender , corner of hood , and windscreen air vent , over the gaps in these panels -- rock the steering back and forth.
Likely you will be able to detect the front end moving side to side. (not good)
Also put a floor jack under the front jacking point and lift the front wheel off the ground , very likely you will no longer able to open the door. (not good)

I owned two of these Fiat 128s in my life. My first one was a very good running car. The 2nd one, not so much. I think it got 31 mpg in the city. It was an olive green color.

'Horizontally opposed'? I don't think that's what you meant. It's an inline (L)-4 mounted transversely.

Had one in college. i think it was a 1974 coupe.. navy blue, buckskin interior, bought it with low miles from Goodwill ( yeah they tried selling cars a bit in the 80's) in about 1982-3 for 35 bucks because the trans didnt work ( a shift linkage bolt was missing, I walked down to the hardware store and bought a bolt and drove it home. It was fine until I was rear ended by a drunk at a stop light, but it would not start below 35 degrees F, AT ALL. I put a Weber kit on it, but it didnt help. Also, the steering rack develop about a 15 degree slip at the steering wheel, which scared the crap out my then-girlfriend. If I could find a nice clean one for anything reasonable I would buy it just for fun. Really fun to drive in the snow ( if you can start it)
