Saw them open for Between the Buried and Me in Tampa. They BOTH were great! Toward the end of the show BTA's guitarist grabbed the mic & told the crowd that they had no place to crash. He asked if anyone could put them up for the night. Now that's a rock band!
Blotted Science aren't any more "melodic" than these guys. They just use conventional repeat structures and stay on grooves and riffs for longer, so they seem like a more "normal" band. But BS is also just as harmonically and linearally (not "melodically") bent as these guys. They both use advanced composition techniques which borrow from 12-tone classical music.
Writing a paper on how this music is in Sonata Form Intro, Theme 1, 2, 3, DEVELOPMENT, Theme 3, 2, 1, Coda There are transitions in between, but it's actually incredible!
Anyone whos says zero theory is involved here. Obviously doesnt know wtf they are talking about. Dynamics are a part of theory. There are scales that have dissonant and chromatic routes. Get over your purist selves.
Man, I'm shocked to see how many people don't get this band. These guys rule. This IS structured music. This IS melodic music. It's just incredibly dynamic and inventive. It isn't exciting that a band is doing such out there stuff? I don't get the hate, at all. I'm completely blown away that so many people dislike this group.
i'm glad this stuff is around. Thank christ all music doesn't sound the same. Hey Artopus! don't ever get a singer. these guys are unbelievable and certainly revered by musicians of any genre. kudos, gentlemen.
i think it takes someone with an ear for music to actually appreciate this. this might not catch your ear like lil wayne or whatever it is but these guys actually have talent. remembering all of that would be intensely hard, its extremely progressive and off time. i dont think it sounds all that great but i love it because i know how much these guys must know about music to be able to play this kind of stuff.
Absolute brilliance I feel sorry for the drummer I wonder how much time it took to play this song with no mistakes, amazing timekeeping and time signatures, I wouldnt want to play it myself but my respect to those guys.
Charlie ... YOU ARE GOD :) The studio version of this tune kills so damn hard. It might be my all-time favorite Arctopus tune. And I hope your career is going well. You are one seriously murderous drummer, man. Love your work in BS, too. (And IMHO, you blow Weasel Walter away :)
This is basically what happens when you mix Death Metal and Jazz..... So intense, so artistic.... They shred all over the place, but with purpose, not wankery at all....I love it. They even have the balls to throw a big spacey new-age sounding breakdown section in there. It paints so many pictures, though most of them are very strange. I think I'm a fan.
i worship these guys everyday, i love colin, he is so fit, and mike is the best guitar player ever, alcoholocaust is the best song ever! colin from behold the arctopus is the messiah.
Ive really only listened to their album skullgrid but I think their songwriting is fine, I have definately felt emotion from some of their songs, and its very trippy. They do have direction, and they do repeat certain things, but in a very particular, unique way.The point of this band is that theyre making interesting songs that take an immense amount of talent to play and remember. it will be hard to listen to every day if you dont have the ear for it but at least appreciate it for the art it is
I'd guess that if a person is posting negative comments here, they probably aren't familiar with Stravinsky or don't like his music in the first place. Amazing fucking music.
@boobengarden666 I love both of them. I guess Behold just don't care. They don't want their music to sound good. It's just a great crawling and shapeless chaos. That's why I love it. I'd say this is truly Avant-Garde Metal, experimental, while Blotted is more melodic, Technical Death Metal I'd say.
its a warr guitar, which is a stringed instrument with both sides of the sonic spectrum, sort of. its pretty much a guitar and a bass put together that you tap on
Just because you aren't used to a type of music (or music redefined), don't say it's complete garbage. My band plays more hardcore/groove metal, but I think these guys are AMAZING for coming up with a style that is completely theirs in a world where music is rapidly drowning in cookie-cutter bands. I think we can all agree that these guys do something new. When something is new,WOW. How refreshing to hear something that doesn't conform to what the general populace would call musical.
Anyone seeking a convinced mind that this band is incredible, just listen to the Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning CD and Skullgrid by these guys....and a live performance if your lucky. Seriously....this is a musical gem of our time.
@metalfun111 i know exactly what you mean, even though this isnt exactly the same genre the first time I heard 'a saucerful of secrets' i was just like wtf is this.. then I began to realize that what im hearing is exactly how pink floyd intended their audience to hear it, meaning that every single note, sound, whatever, was composed and arranged to sound precisely in the order of how they wished to express the piece
I'm a little more accepting of this band than I was a few months ago. I give them serious credit for being true to themselves. And it's a lot more original than the crap you usually hear on the radio.
@stripgaga seems like this genre is beyond what your mind can ever imagine, that's why you can't understand it. these guys are really avant-garde, and about experimenting beyond the limits of regular music, even when it comes to grindcore or death
great comeback bixby... truly you are a genius of wit. anyway parquar i think i quite like the fact that they dont stress on composition. it comes across as more more refreshing and spontanious. more... arty maybe? even the technicality isn't what makes this band awesome. it's something about the abstract quality, the whole stop-start thing, that does it for me.
behold the arctopus are absolutely geniuses, technically, inventively, song writing wise and for how tight they are. this is one of those times where there is no argument about that, and anyone who doesn't like them simply just doesn't understand them. the person who is a musician but then says about anti-melody not stirring emotions!! what the!? it works for me fine.
i do not see how people say they suck soo bad. In fact i do not think they suck at all. Just different last time i checked that was a good thing. There is to much empty space for me but that is what they were going for great. Keep up the good work
If any of you are into progressive / experimental / improve, then you might enjoy the song "Soard Pleigh" by The Wasabi Heroes. It's very underground (less than 100 views between both parts 1 and 2 together). It's not really all that technical like this song, but I think the improvisation is pretty interesting for what appears to be an amateur band.
@timkick2 "This is way too ahead of its time" basically equates to "this sounds too structurally different from what I'm used to hearing for me to appreciate at this point in time," correct? If so, then why not listen to their songs more than once so you can learn to appreciate it for what it is?
i fucking love this band progessive is the way of the future and its so closely related to some of the oldest forms of music. the fact they dont go intro verse chorus verse chorus brdge chorus outro is so much more art and music then most other shit u hear these days most people with common intelligence will never appreciate this. it takes imagination and talent to write this so open ur eyes if u can.
Everybody's talking about their side projects but nobody's mentioned the drummer's other band. Blotted Science, they're amazing technical progressive instrumental metal with Watch Tower/Spastik Ink's Ron Jarzombek.
@stripgaga - You can easily compare this band to others, its just a genre your not attracted to and apparently never explored. Generally this is because its too sporadic and complex to comprehend, so its not enjoyable. If you were INTO off timing stuff. experimental metal etc. you would recognize clear similarities to other bands. Dont believe me? Try these similar bands "Spiral Architect" "psyopus" "Cynic" "Animals as Leaders" "Meshuggah" "Sleepytime Gorilla Museum" "Dillinger Escape Plan"
Hooray for musicians who actually try to do something different! This is as experimental and OUT as Captain Beefheart and Ornette Coleman were in their day. Keep it up.
Are you, my dear friend Davemech, familiar with Frank Zappa's music? If so, then you'd note the implementation of polyrhythms within this "song". 0:46-0:49 is a great example. Although literally, the "structures" throughout are polyrhythms, they may not be pleasant to the ears. Have you ever attempted to play polyrhythmic structures? They are quite challenging, indeed. They have my respect, simply for their near impeccable timing. Now, I'm not saying I enjoy listening to this though.
I love it, found them through Dillinger's record label... Would have to pick Dillinger over them anyday though cos of: 1. Vocals 2. Chorus 3. Stage antics It's such good tech metal but it doesn't allow for them to enjoy themselves, they only get to play cos it's so extremely tech. A vocalist would be wicked I reckon!
@stripgaga - Exactly my point... Im shocked you can even get into Dillinger considering how similar they are at times to some of these. Cynic sucks? You cannot FIND a technical/progressive metal forum or top 10 list which doesn't list them haha. You have proven exactly what I was saying and many other posters have told you. You are not READY for this type of music, be happy you can appreciate Meshuggah, if your mind was any more closed you would be commenting the same on their videos.
they are something like Dream Theater meets Battles.some overtechnical instrumentals generaly annoys me, but they really are an exception, IMO. as the guy said, there's some very good ideas and feelings behind the technical arrangement, is something like cubism, indeed. great band.
@stripgaga - No Im saying your under accomplished when you brag about being a drummer for 20 years and cannot understand that this music is very technical and definitely has its own rhythm and time signatures. I am not saying its unusual, most drummers are under accomplished. Its your hobby, not your job. For these guys, and myself, its a profession as well as a hobby As for bumping it down the street, actually this band is one of my favorites to crank super loud on my car stereo! The only way!
i totally agree with jazzinguitar, people who dont understand this is just ingorant to say things like these guys r doing it just to prove they can play, please its not about playing fast its about timing and modes, creativity and orginality something that many dont have
furfu0008: This is decadence. It's about pushing the boundaries further. You can't deny, that this is something completely new and unique. Something that no one ever played before. That's what the decadence is about. You don't have to like this and you don't have to admire this. Nobody gives a crap anyway...
Wow, I can't say that I liked or disliked this. I appreciate the musicianship if not the music. Well done you crazy kids. I believe the bassist Colin Marston now plays with Gorguts.
@Imptheshrimp ok no music is not notes in scales, that is sound or even if it is music its bad music; good music is notes put together creatively and that musically fits.
this is like 'om' by coltrane or some far out 'sun ra' but it's made accessible by the extreme virtuosity of the musicians. I think these guys are 'showing off' and that we can really find their voices in the midst of that torrent. It's like as if King Crimson did death metal
@timkick2 If you, I, and thousands of other people can appreciate it, how are they ahead of their time? And why the hostility? All I did was present a question and give a preemptive answer ("If so...").
there are much more complex arrangements than this actually. This music is meant to have a new spin on the old Arrangements of artists like Atheist and Cynic (or that's my interpretation). A heavy focus on instrumentals, allows a whole new spread of ideas to open up. If you listen to a lot of technical death metal, it's really quite dissonant, this is just taking that concept and blasting it through the roof to a whole new level. There is melody here, it's just not blatantly obvious.
If you think Dillenger Escape Plan is complex, you don't know what complex is. Try some Zappa sometime. THAT is complex. This is cool. I was in a band that played music like this once, and it was extremely challenging trying to keep up with the other two guys. And it's not random notes on the fretboard. Obviously you've never heard of Ornette Coleman and harmolodic theory.

It has so much jazz influence, it's amazing.
Drummer's facial expression is awesome :)

Is it published? Can I see it?
wow...so sick....my favorite video footage of Behold so far...thanks fer posting! gawd dam sik!
Anyone whos says zero theory is involved here. Obviously doesnt know wtf they are talking about. Dynamics are a part of theory. There are scales that have dissonant and chromatic routes. Get over your purist selves.
Awesome... Great display of technical skill... I can never play like you guys.. Cheers!! I enjoyed the clip alot..
love these guys, totally awesome and very influential band in my opinion.
Man, I'm shocked to see how many people don't get this band. These guys rule. This IS structured music. This IS melodic music. It's just incredibly dynamic and inventive. This band grooves in one of the most together and original sounding ways
you are a genius. you speak with the wisdom of an old man and prove yourself right by talking at all.

this is pretty awesome. This is up there with dream theater and symphony x
Just heard about his band 10 minutes ago. When I was told the bassplayer used I stick, I expected this to be artsy and stupid. This kicks ass.
17 years ago, good lord. Where does time go?
This is basically what happens when you mix Death Metal and Jazz.....

Amazing fucking music.
as a hard-prog lover,I must admit this a little infringes the boundaries of prog (or music) into something new.
I think not acknowledging this as music is a huge compliment...Just imagine what they'd create if they tried.
its a warr guitar, which is a stringed instrument with both sides of the sonic spectrum, sort of. its pretty much a guitar and a bass put together that you tap on
These guys are awesome! They also know a thing or two about dynamics too!
And Stravinsky was a God, enough said.
These guys are so talented. I wanna see em live!!
Now that they don't have a website (only a MySpace) where can I find their sheet music? Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks.
oh man this is overwhelmingly awesome

Oh my god I am in love with this band
Saw these guys play in Hamilton, Ontario. Amazing set. Interesting band.
talent like its no ones business. These guys are truly awesome. And jesus I want a Warr guitar!!
Anyone seeking a convinced mind that this band is incredible, just listen to the Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning CD and Skullgrid by these guys....and a live performance if your lucky.

brilliant stuff, want to see them live sometimes!
If playing single dissonant notes in sync with each drum hit makes you a band, they're all set
i do not see how people say they suck soo bad. In fact i do not think they suck at all. Just different last time i checked that was a good thing. There is to much empty space for me but that is what they were going for great. Keep up the good work
anyone have an mp3 of this? or better yet, a partial transciption to go on... this is my goal for the summer... muahaha
these guys are so cool, i saw them at show last saturday

hey where did you get your masters? im starting my MA in Music Theory in september, im pretty stoked...
Awesome, and very complex, very good musicians.
How big are their crowds? I wanna go to see these beasts.

this band is amazing, it is like technical metal with zeuhl. but of course a lot of people don´t understand it and critize it.
they are so raw!!
of course it is! what else is music for?! music is for listening to it and having fun!

dude,I very well know avant-garde. but this one is unique. something of a pioneer.
This band is fucking awesome! Sounds so great you just gotta love it!
how many frets does the warr guitar have?
@stripgaga - No Im saying your under accomplished when you brag about being a drummer for 20 years and cannot understand that this music is very technical and definitely has its own rhythm and time signatures. Yeah. I meant that each note that the guitar and bass player play together (which together sound dissonant) doesn't really flow into the next one
Big RUSH fan & I like BTA as of now. Any good albums?
A breath of fresh air in an interweb lousy with ukulele strumming girls singing L.O.V.E.
now if rock generally has any future, this is probably a glimpse of it.
These guys remind me of a 21st century Primus, and thats a good thing!!!
I quite like this, now that I revisit the band. I didn't really 'get it' when I first heard them a year or so ago
Awesome song, I cannot wait for skullgrid to come out in october!
beautiful melodic music. i dont know why people think this stuff is hard to listen to, there is way more crazier stuff out there.
Then by all means go listen to Close to the Edge -- a truly classic album.
Just stop expecting to find it the wrong places.
furfu0008: This is decadence. It's about pushing the boundaries further. You can't deny, that this is something completely new and unique. Something that no one ever played before. Nice. Clearly some king crimson and fantomas influences there. Hard to digest stuff. I like it!
i personally dig it better when a band can be technicall n heavy at the same time
@timkick2 If you, I, and thousands of other people can appreciate it, how are they ahead of their time? And why the hostility? All I did was present a question and give a preemptive answer ("If so...").
Incredible, this is Freak and Amazing at the same time, very good
amazing!
grandiosos increibles son buenisimos
Shit these guys don't have an official music video or a DVD... I WANT TO SEE THEM PERFORM LIVE MAN!
this band is great
