      @@X3MTIG Does this dipping technique you do where you dip on each side work on the bottom of the pipe? How do you fight gravity to keep the root above flush?

    Dip technique will NEVER fail you. Great content and views. Never feed in the metal or else you’ll get too much penetration. Just like the video shows, add wire only to each edge and the metal will naturally fill/penetrate. No matter if you’re doing freehand or walking root technique, always focus on breaking the wall.

    When I keyhole I have issues knowing how much to push in, I always end up with a low root or too much of a root. But I’m gonna try dipping on both sides when I get the chance. Great video brother 🤙🏼

      Thanks for your comment brother! Dipping on both sides, choosing right amperage and rod size, and travel speed is crucial! Every joint is different and requires experience to determine how you going to execute your task, and that comes with time, and practice! Play with your settings to find fine tuning and you’ll be golden 👊

    Great video . I mostley allways use the dip technique especially with difficult metals . However i must say that sometimes you have to weld very dirty or low quality steel , then the laywire was the only way it would weld good . Everyone who welded at the basf plant in Antwerpen Belgium can relate , the moment you disconnected your filler from the weldpool and opened a keyhole you got porosity and small firework , and you needed to keep your weld on the minimum heat to make it weld . Man i hated that steel, everybody complained about it . What i find really strange is that such a big and rich company would cheap out on material cost , witch in turn makes the production cost higher because of more repairs and slower production rate because you needed to let the metal cool down to room temperature between passes . Other than that keyhole and dip are king . Keep up the good work

    I use the same technique for years I just cut the tacks out as I come up to them for me it makes a more uniform root either way it just has pass x ray ..

    hey wanted to ask a personal question, do you feel what u do takes too much of ur life in terms of time,i work in plants just as you do, mostly stainless and im young (21) and im afraid i may waste my years working 12hr shifts.

      I am going to also answer your question as it is extremely smart. Yes man, this job is extremely time consuming, difficult and demanding. You will never be at home, you will be working a lots in extremely stressful situations and if I was young as you, I would definitely, knowing what I know now, find a new profession. If I was 21 again, I would completely change my future, I’d go to college or University, choose the easier and smarter path!! It’s incredible how you already concluded that at your young age! Working with your brains it’s always smarter and easier than working manually!! 👏🏻

      Like Mike said, it is extremely hard job and with welding you are always required to take welding tests every 6 months. If I was you, I would also consider other options as you still have time!

      Thanks for your question buddy! I’ll give you honest answer. Welding is not easy, and it’s one of the most demanding trades in industry. The term Journeyman comes from lifestyle, as people were always on the road from job to job, and never home with their families and kids. My advice to you, if you already in this , and making decent money, and you don’t have family yet, save some cash and invest in your future, and that’s education! You are still young and you still have chance to choose your future and career!

    *😁 Another great video. I watched the video you did a month ago on the F6/F4 Max T and left a question for that video also. I realize while in the field you are too busy to get to all the comments. Just a quick question, does taking that Max T test you took using carbon 70-S2 wire and 7018 for fill and cap also qualify you to do chrome? I haven't tested at Local 488 for quite some time.       Hey bud, sorry for delayed reply. Yes, F6/F4 PQ test, welder who qualifies on a P1 to P1 material is also qualified to weld P-1 trough P-15F , P-34 and any P-40s.

      @@X3MTIG Very Interesting. I have worked through Local 488 for many years but have only worked through the pipeline division for the last 15 years so I am a little out of touch with the Industrial side. So, to test on a carbon coupon with 70 wire and 7018 will qualify the Welder for P1-15 base metals. That does indeed also qualify to weld on a chrome base metal, but in fact also qualifies to weld on P8 which is the stainless steel designation. Yet, when they test for stainless, they test with on carbon (base metal) with 309-L filler material and on the qualification card the only P number on there is P8 which only qualifies the Welder to weld on a stainless steel base metal. The last time I tested at the Hall to qualify for chrome you had to test with 80 wire and 8018 electrodes and that would qualify you for P1-4 base metals only. I guess things have changed.

    How much should be the angle or inclunination on the bottom side of the tungsten to the pipe ? When freehand and when walking the cup but especially freehand.

    When fitting such a huge diameter pipe is there a lot more strength with those thick tacks? We are fitting pipe which are a meter in diameter. These are also 18 meters long which means the tack as to be strong when you lower the pipe. I ask because what I usually do is weld 30-50% of the root in place of tacking. I have never tried masking those massive thick tacks before. Does it work? Are they strong? Fitting massive pipe is a pain in the ass and while dealing with weather conditions and holding up the crain operator. I just wonder if these massive fat tacks would work. It would be much faster and it gives me better time and conditions to do a proper root.

    You got some great content.. but recently I got hired at a new job and they use er70s2 but not one that I was familiar with. It looks silver, I guess it's coated 70s2. And wheen I tested, it was way different. Hard to explain kind of. On the bottom it was flat with cold wire and I don't have problem with carbon but am with this wire. Any videos on this specific wire?

      @Justin Grubbs they put in a big bore pipe shop. I made the necessary adjustments and started coming out good. But ya out did shoot my confidence down for a bit.. like dam this wire better be wayyyyyyyy cheaper or smthg

      They don’t need to see stubs. There should be a filler rod tracker or they can PMI the weld if they are that concerned with it.
