What wasn't explained in this video is that some of the vintage rhinestone sets sold for high $$$ partly because they were "converter" sets. In the case of the OOAK multicoloured parure, the necklace transforms into two bracelets and a pin. At 12:20, the necklace also converts into 2 bracelets. The versatility of these pieces, as well as their novelty, makes them more desirable to collectors.
@@isabellavalencia8026 A "converter" was a piece of jewelery that could change into some other form....... like the necklace that "converts" to a broach and 2 bracelets. Think of these pieces as "The Transformers" of costume jewelry.
Amber is not a stone, but fossilized resin from evergreen trees. It looks and feels similar to a gemstone and is often treated as one, having been a popular element in decoration and adornment for many years. Generally a golden or brown color, it is considered to be restorative and soothing. Beware that all “amber” isn’t amber. Fakes could be: casein, celluloid, copal, glass, kauri gum, plastic, and phenolic resin.
True. I suspected that a necklace that I have was amber, but an expert told me it was celluloid. She was right. There are videos on how to test for amber - eg it should float in heavily salted, hot (not boiling) water and fluoresce under blue light.
My mom born 1917 had so many and she bought them in NYC in the 30s, 40s, 50s at Lord and Taylor, Saks, Altmans, Gimbels, etc. All the big department stores. Me born 1957, wore so many of them, growing up, going to clubs... They're beautiful but the prices are so way over the top, buy gold. But people pay and they're happy. I like wearing what I have way too much to sell.
Loved seeing the watermelon tourmaline! Tourmaline is the Maine state gemstone and we have quarries that produce many colors, including watermelon. I found a slice of it set in sterling MANY years ago at Goodwill for $3!
Well that'll teach me for being nice and letting family members choose pieces out of my Grandmother's jewelry box when she passed away. (That was back in 1995). I'm pretty certain one of the pieces was a Bakelite.
Hello Kat, another great video. The string you have referred to is knotted. Usually the material for example pearls are knotted. To protect the beads. Chain would destroy them. It's a sign of good quality.
The Delillo necklace is high end costume jewelry. The stones are glass, not genuine turquoise. I sold the matching brooch, bracelet and earrings for a little bit more than the necklace to a reseller in NYC last year.
Keep in mind that is takes coral 10,000 to 240 MILLION years to grow in the ocean on the coral reefs. That is why it is so expensive. One can't just go destroy a reef anymore thank goodness. It is quite beautiful.
It looks like Juliana to me as well. I see figure 8 puddling in the back of the brooch along with individually soldered pin components. Juliana bracelets have 5 links. 😊
Thank you for sharing your research so much work but greatly appreciated. To find natural red coral like the last piece you showed today would be next to impossible. Have a nice day!
Wow oh wow. Many years ago before thrift shopping became a thing, I started collecting vintage jewelry. I need to look through my items to see what I have. The shop I frequent, happens to be near a upscale retirement community and they get tons of donations at this thrift shop. Most of my Sterling came from this place. Some gold, some costume. Definitely a new subbie. 🥰
I’m learning so much from your videos and I’m getting addicted. After this video, I think I will go over my vast inventory of thrifted jewelry because I believe I have an undiscovered fortune😁. I have very fine pieces like the ones shown.
I like what you picked to be in the video. Technically the internet has a mass amount of gold jewelry which is high priced. I like how you choose items we wouldn't expect to be such high dollar amounts.
Wow Kat. I believe I may have stones and beads that are vintage that I have picked up from thrift stores that might just be top dollar. I'm excited. Thanks again for your research work. Lookinjg forward to your next one.
Thank you for sharing this. I have been collecting vintage jewelry and I have a few sets I am thinking about selling... This video is very helpful....much appreciated
Thank you. I am a volunteer at a thrift shop in my city and I sort the jewelry. Good pieces go to sell to a jeweler. I know silver and gold but I can easily miss costume stuff that doesn't suit my simple style.
Hey Kat, my sister-in-law left me several of her Mom’s costume pieces. I am thinking of selling them because I don’t wear them. I gave away thousands of real jewelry during the pandemic. I have bought more. But rarely wear anything but rings. My sister-in-law had millions in real jewelry. My brother was a judge and had his own firm. Sadly he passed away last year.

It was so much fun collecting vintage signed costume jewelry 20 years ago before the faux-copy jewelry took over.
Late 1970s when I began wearing my mom's but my older sisters wore them. Pins I wore throughout high school. Some gorgeous huge pins and earrings...

Living on the Mexican border for over 55 years I am very partial to the Mexican silver and it all looks so beautiful on your site.
Yes for sure, you must have access to wonderful things!
I can’t help wishing I had some of my mother’s costume jewellery, which frequently were necklace/earrings, from 50’s and 60’s.
