Vesa-Matti "Vesku" Loiri was a multitalent and was also a musician and a singer. During his career he released over 30 albums starting in the 1970s. He's actually one of the most sold solo artists in Finland.
Loiri was a multi-talented artist and also almost pro-level athlete younger. If I recall correctly, he played football as a goalie in first/second division level. Also a national level 9-ball pool player. He sang, especially remembered for his christmas-albums and Lapland themed folk(?) Music albums. And he played a few instruments, at least the flute. He was quite honestly a certifiable genius.
The name Jean-Pierre Kusela is funny to Finns. It sounds like Jean "pieree kusella", Finnish for Jean "farting while peeing." The character is a parody of French singer Jean-Claude Pascal, whose surname Pascal sounds like "paskalla", Finnish for "taking a shit."
Jean was one of the characters in the sketch show Vesku Show. The program was shown in 1988-1991 once a month and at its peak it drew more than 1.6 million viewers. At that time there were a lot of programs in Finland that only came out once a month. I used to have Jean-Pierre Kusela's C-cassette The Laughing Tramp. No less than 92,000 copies of the album were sold. It received a platinum disc in 1987, and it is among Finland's 60 best-selling domestic albums. Btw Jean-Pierre Kuselan sounds pronounced in Finnish: Jean farts when he pisses.
The pianist Puppe is also familiar from this popular performance: "Gregorius: NMKY (live on TV)". Slightly similar character to Kusela is this Eeki Mantere's character Viktor Kalborrek. I don't know where he is from actually, maybe Italian, but he's not Finnish: "Hullujussi - Tyttö Lilla Nakkikioskilla & Zooma Zooma [Live]". Mantere's character Kari Grandi in juice commercials is also memorable: "Nainen pulassa | Valio Grandi arkistomainos".
Actually the original song is called "Gambler´s guitar" and it is made by Jim Lowe in 1953. Vesa-Matti Loiri was third person to sing this song in finnish.
Vesa-Matti Loiri, the actor who plays the role, was actually also a very respected singer! I recommend reacting to either Nocturne or Lapin Kesä, sung by him!
I think he is a bit theatrical (wonder why!) but I do like his singing a lot. I'd say my favourite is "Käännyn hiljaa pois". I had this "Naurava kulkuri"-LP when I was a kid, my mother might have it still. This characther "Tyyne" singin Je t'aime moi non plus - or "Söteem" as it is in finnish... is quite hilarious. I'd reccomendid it to anyone who has or has not heard the original. They both are characters in "Spede show" but did not have shows of their own outside of it, as far as I can recall.
He was a great, exceptionally talented crazy-comedian, yes, but also a wonderful musician to be taken seriously. I guess every 50+ Finn loves his works. Some say, as a person, he was not an "ordinary" guy (of course not) , and sometimes a difficult one to live with, but we, the audience, we loved him. And still do.
Vesa-Matti Loiri & Samuli Edelmann - Tuomittuna kulkemaan (Live!). you have to listen to this one. vesa-matti Loiri a.k.a. Uuno Turhapuro sings here. it´s so beautiful song
Vesa-Matti Loiri is a good artist and definitely funny comedian! I first heard of him when he performed alongside Spede Pasanen in Spede show, but his music is very good. Especially his Christmas songs.
Estonian comedian Jan Uuspõld did cover of this in Tallinn. It was in Suomi 100 vuotta - Finland 100 year anniversary. Vesa-Matti Loiri should had been there in Tallinn, but Loiri's gig was cancelled tue Loiri's bad health contition. So Jan Uuspõld did Loiri's gig. th-cam.com/video/Hhy9E-sOcuo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qK1lb0QFBi2wtUDg
Birlliant actor, comedian, singer, musician (flute), football goalie, good at billiards, great at water polo, decent in boxing. And a Finnish champion in clown diving.
He really sing this song in his 30ths or so but in elderly days when going in tours and when audience was demanding to sing this very song, he said it's not possible with breath he has anymore. No other have replicated this song. Rip to Vesa. You may want to listen a song called "lapin kesä" also...
The artist name is a joke of a sorts, refers to a French singer Pascal. Pascal sounds very much like "take a dump" in Finnish, Kusela equals to "take a leak".
Ok. The actual factual origin of this character was from a TV-show "Kim Borg's Masterclass" (Kim Borgin Mestariluokka). World-famous opera-star Kim Borg was teaching wanna-be singers. This Laughing Tramp song was one of those lessons. The pupils learned to laugh on beat but naturally. This was actually more comical than this Kusela-parody.
Such a legendary song from true legend. 10 years ago Vesa-Matti Loiri participated (among other famous Finnish artists) to tv-show called "Vain elämää". In that TV show, each artist has their own day, when other artists perform their own versions of their songs. Famous rapper (and the most positive person in Finland) Elastinen performed this "Naurava kulkuri" to Vesa-Matti Loiri in his own unique way. If you are interested I recommend you to watch it although it doesn't have subtitles: th-cam.com/video/7bm3loSaMeQ/w-d-xo.html
Can you react to this song: Vesa-Matti Loiri & Samuli Edelmann - Tuomittuna kulkemaan. Its the soundtrack for a movie they did together in 2012 called Tie Pohjoiseen (Road North) Fun fact: Samuli Edelmann acted as one of the bad guys in the 2011 Tom Cruise movie, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Oh yes, he actually sings (and laughs) himself. You may recognize him from other 1980's Finnish comedies... This odd character Uuno Turhapuro perhaps...?❤
Please, check him out, in my opinion brilliant singer. Vesa-Matti Loiri. I like his versions of Finnish folk songs like Laulu on iloni ja työni, Itkevä huilu. He was a trained musician and played the flute

This may be controversial, but I dislike the Pertti Pasanen years of the extremely talented singer and actor Vesa-Matti Loiri. The saving grace is he seemed to have lots of fun, and all is just me frowning at at comedy as a grumpy person.
Jean-Pierre Kusela is a fictional character invented by Spede Pasanen and played by Vesa-Matti Loiri, appearing in the Finnish sketch comedy series Spede Show from 1985 to 1987. The character is a parody of typical French smooth-voiced chanson singers, particularly Jean-Claude Pascal, whose surname - like that of Kusela - has a connotation of toilet humour.[3] ("Pascal" sounds like "paska", Finnish for "shit", and hence the name Kusela comes from "kusi", Finnish for "piss".) And he was also waterpolo and handball finnish champpion and pretty good boxer

The ending with the old guys at the balcany is obviously a reference to the Muppet Show, which had very similar scenes. :)

Both Viktor Kalborrek and Olli Ahvenlahti (playing Puppe) are finnish. The person playing Puppe is an honoured pianist and a conductor.
Actually the original song is called "Gambler´s guitar" and it is made by Jim Lowe in 1953. Vesa-Matti Loiri was third person to sing this song in finnish.
As a child this was my absolute favourite. I did not get the context but the pure performance made me laugh. Same applies to Uuno Turhapuro movies.
In addition to Jean Pierre Kusela, Vesa-Matti "Vesku" Loiri also starred in, e.g. Uuno Turhapuro, Nasse-setä and Tyyne
Vesa-Matti Loiri, the actor who plays the role, was actually also a very respected singer! I recommend reacting to either Nocturne or Lapin Kesä, sung by him!
Tuomittuna kulkemaan is also good 👍
Also Ystävän laulu.
