This is my reaction to Kummeli - Roolipeli/Larppaajat
In this video I react to Finnish comedy from Finnish television comedy sketch show Kummeli and their funny comedy sketch about role-playing and larping in Finland.

The goblin (Silvennoinen) actually accidentally sticks the dwarf (Kahilainen) in the arm as he starts to chase after the executioner (Hela). You can see him get the "oh shit I hurt my friend" reaction.

The "goblin" is constantly hissing in reference to a famous finnish tongue twister: "vesihiisi sihisi hississä", which translates "water devil made a hissing sound in an elevator". There is no direct equivalent for "hiisi" in english mythology, but goblin is close enough. The tongue twister is the only source for how they might vocalize.

Yeah, it is like "hiss" or "sissh" - Maybe why Control (the video game by Remedy) has "the hiss" might also be reference to this, but it very highly more might not be.

LARPing in Finland isn't super common, but there's a dedicated community that organizes events. Annual events like Ropecon feature LARPing, tabletop RPGs, and other role-playing activities. Tabletop RPGs, while not as mainstream as in some countries, have a pretty strong following. These games really took off in the 80s and 90s. While they might not be as widely known today, they still have a solid fan base that keeps the scene lively. Original Finnish RPGs like "Legendoja ja Lohikäärmeitä" add a unique local flavor to the gaming landscape.

Used to be really popular in the late 90s. The Helsinki railway station Kompassitaso was always full of young people with boffer weapons etc. They used to hang out in Suomenlinna and arrange boffer tournaments all the time. They just somehow disappeared all of a sudden.

Not to mention the handful of government operators, who actively pretend to be functioning humans. Their LARPs are quite convincing, but the illusion is lost as soon as they open their mouths.

Yes, I have organized over 30 larps back in the day. Haven't done much in the past 10 years or so, but there still is a healty community of larpers in Finland.
That Kummeli scetch was a classic in the larp community when it came out. It's wildly inaccurate of course, but all aknowledges from the media was a big deal for a relatively unknown hobby like larpers. 😊

It’s also more like of a hobby for teenagers and not for grown-up people with jobs, which I think was part of the joke here 😅 Also, did you notice that one was a 34 years old student, which kinda refers to a person who hasn’t been able to finish his studies in decent time 😄

I'd like to take part in a LARP but trying to get in is like applying for a job. There are too many players compared to the amount of games running. I do play tabletop role-playing games though.
Ropecon was last weekend. Nothing to do with ropes though. The name comes from "ROoliPEli" which is roleplaying in Finnish. It's a weekend long convention for all things nerdy. Lots of TTRPGs, some light LARPs, lots of seminars, a huge board game / miniatyre game area, boffer area, and other activities like medieval dancing and workshops. It's the largest non-commercial role-playing convention in Europe organised entirely by volunteers.

There's a huge boffering event in Finland called "Sotahuuto".
It's not really LARP though, its more like airsoft with swords.
There are some really good videos about it on youtube like "Finnish Boffering - Sotahuuto 2022: FSC - Epic Frag Compilation"

"Perfect encapsulation of the type of person"... I used to larp back in the 90s. I also was a bouncer in the 90s, then did some things that won't be disclosed in public, then a roadie, industrial painter, stagehand.. So, you were saying?

One can be of many minds of LARPing in general, but one thing the hobby keeps alive is the crafts of the middle ages. The most common is fabric making, coloring, and sewing of period appropriate clothing and apparel.

Larping, roleplaying or cosplay isn't as laughed upon these days, to be honest. It goes hand in hand with playing in general. Back in the day playing video games, or board games, was considered childrens' past time. Today though..
Hell, I wouldn't mind larping a character from Fallout universe for an afternoon. Could be rather fun, actually.

Lots of the comedy is lost in the subtitles, which aren't very great sadly :/ And to be fair, some of it is impossible to translate 100%, like their names and how they sound stupid to Finnish ears
