Hi again! This song is like the "Stairway Of Heaven" of our xmas songs. Along with Sparrow, these two songs belong to the Raskasta Joulua show. I was at the gig in Kuopio...and while Sparrow always call other ppl to sing along, when this song is played, the audience keeps still and hardly even takes pics or vids with cellphones. Special song indeed
Jarkko's original band was called Teräsbetoni. It was a power-metal band, kinda funny cheesy 80's style songs about warriors and epic fights- basically finnish version of Manowar. 😄 All their songs are in finnish - and Jarkko uses his amazing tenor voice, sometimes mixed with some growling as well.
And teräsbetoni could mean something like Reinforced concrete
Jarkko Ahola is the singer and songwriter from the heavy band Teräsbetoni. He is an amazing singer with no vocal training what so ever. He has never taking a vocal lesson. He just released his third Christmas album. Check out Nessun Dorma opera or My Way heavy version, or next should be his Walking in the air live from the church.
Check out Northern kings -Take on me (live) - , you can find other familiar faces from it 😏🤘🇫🇮
Thank you!
The most beautiful Christmas song, for me, is still Varpunen Jouluaamuna (Sparrow on a Christmas morning). But I like Sylvian Joululaulu, too. Sometimes, it's just too sad for me (yes, I know Varpunen Jouluaamuna is also quite sad).
By the way, those two songs are written by the same guy, Zachris Topelius... wel they were poems.
Sylvian joululaulu was originally written in Swedish (Sylvias hälsning från Sicilien, which can be translated into English meaning Sylvia's greetings from Sicily). Yes, the song/poem is partly about missing home, but it also has a darker story.
Sylvia is a migratory bird that flies to Sicily, Italy for winter. Then it's captured and locked in a cage. (this is where the crusome part starts). Then people ruin the birds eyes so that it's dark for it all the time... Sylvia is a bird that sings during night, so now it lures other birds of its kind to get captured. Then people would cut the birds' tongue for food.
Topelius was against all of this so I suppose that's one reason why he wrote this poem.
I love it, how much you show appreciation for my culture, the Finnish culture. Thank you for that!
❤
Backround: This is from classical "sophisticated" christmas concert by Vantaan Viihdeorkesteri and after this show was televised at few years ago, even every grandma knew who Jarkko Ahola is, not only metalheads. Somebody had an idea, lets but this guy in a fine suit, comb his hear a little so he doesnt look like a hobo and give him a mick. He was visiting singer with the orchestra and did only 2-3 songs but oh boy he used his airtime well =D
People fell in love and he did heavy christmas album next year and was basicly everywhere and done since so much i cant even remember.
jarkko voice have something what elvis have. greatnessssss. thanx to great reaction and have wonderful new year enterthecronic and everybody.
Jarkko is a great singer❤
They call him the "Metal God". But Jarkko can sing anything.
Oh yeah. He is one of the better finnish male singers of all time.
Jarkko is a Finnish male version of Floor. The difference is that Floor is trained whereas Jarkko is not. But like Floor, Jarkko can do anything; from metal to opera and everything in between.
You must check his version of Nessun Dorma.
"Sylvia's Christmas Carol
Lyr. Zachary Topelius
Mus. Karl Collan
And so did Christmas come to the North
Christmas came to our hearts as well
And the spruces, they bring up their shine brightly
Even to the smallest of cottages
But up there on that perch is
That cage it closes my chriper within
And the wailing of the jail has stopped
Oh, who could remember the singer's sorrow
Where you can smell cypresses even in the winter
I sit on the branch of the greatest tree
Where waters loom, the wine is foamy
And the weather is always like in May
And I can see the beautiful Etna from afar
Ah, all this is charming and dazes my head
And songs are played softly in groves
Who could tell it's greatest joys
You, the brightest star, shine your gaze
To my distant Finland
And then when your light goes out
Bless the country of memories
I can't get anything like that from anywhere
Finland will always be the dearest to me
And Sylvia's song is played for thanks
And it plays the most sonorous song"
Like already said, you have to check out Jarkko's band Teräsbetoni 🤘 Happy New Year!
Thank you, it's impressive how you contemplate so well both the lyrics and music, and also bind the message to history and cultures. Your reaction also made me understand one thing: we possibly might not have our beloved Heavy Metal Christmas phenomen in Finland without this melancholic and beautiful Christmas song tradition. They are so essential part of the concerts and important to everybody.
Jarkko is the King. Hello from Finland ❤
Christmas was peaceful. Family, good food and of course christmas sauna 😊
He’s officially untrained, but actually most (metal) singers here are classically trained, because a solid technique is the basic foundation for heavy metal singing. A friend of mine from the US once pointed out that she was amazed at how many Finnish musicians had a classical background, something that apparently isn’t the case in the US.
In 2008, Teräsbetoni represented Finland at Eurovision song contest with their song ”Missä miehet ratsastaa”. Aside from being the bass player and lead singer in Teräsbetoni, Jarkko’s also a member of ”Northern Kings”, the ”Raskasta Joulua” project, and in 2019 he released his latest solo album ”Metallisydän”.
Please check out his version of Dio’s ”Holy Diver”. He has a unique way of making every cover song his own, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it:

You should check out a song from "Raskasta Joulua" called "Heinillä härkien kaukalon" (acoustic version, official video). It's a beautiful christmas song performed by four finnish heavy metal singers (including Jarkko Ahola and Marco Hietala as well)

Moi! Ihanaa kuulla kun mun oma artisti mikä on ja pysyy ❤
Olette mahtavia 😊
As a finn I’d like to point out that the way he rolls the R here is not really the way we finns do it.
Duh 🙄
@@enterthecronic Homer? Is that you? 😆
@@k.l.7788 I am about as brilliant as Homer lol
One of my favorite christmas songs, but this version just doesn't do it for me. You should react to Anna Erikson's version of this, there's a video on YT with English lyrics so you can follow along!
My go to version is always with Arja Koriseva. ❤️ Teemu Roivainen does it well too.
