  • "In 1945 an Egyptian peasant discovered a collection of early Christian scriptures - the Nag Hammadi Codices, which revealed the existence of a Gnostic version of Christianity. Gnostics (derived from the Greek word gnosis - meaning `knowledge') felt that they could get to know God, and their own soul, going a step beyond faith. Their message, and the words of the `Gnostic Gospels' were buried in the sand of the Egyptian desert. Some scholars now believe these scriptures to be just as authentic, if not more so, than the books we collectively know as the New Testament."

    Gnostics was a 1987 four-part drama-documentary series made by Border TV for Channel 4 (UK). It was re-broadcast in 1990. The writer of the series, Tobias Churton, also released an accompanying book.
    The body of the programmes was compiled of documentary material on Gnostic movements and the Cathars. Among those interviewed were academics and writers Hans Jonas, Gilles Quispel, Elaine Pagels and James Robinson, as well as Muhammad Ali al-Samman who unearthed the texts at Nag Hammadi.
    Dramatised sections were acted by Nigel Harrison (as the Gnostic Christ) with other actors including Brian Blessed, Marius Goring and Ian Brooker.

      The truth of who he is and what he came to do for us, that he was God in the flesh and that through his sacrifice we can receive salvation, that there is no other way.
      He already warned about gnosticism before he rose up and ascended to heaven, he told us that many "Jesus" will rise, with different doctrines, false pastors, fake prophets,and that they will change the knowledge of the truth for a lie.

      Luckily, unlike orthodox teaching and dogma, the secret knowledge reveals itself directly to individuals and requires no written or even oral transmission. The ignorant can no more harm Gnosis by burning books than they can destroy souls by burning bodies.

      Illuminatus Pythagoras
      It's been cultural practice for most groups "of faith" throughout the history of the world to destroy anything that doesn't align with what they believe at the time. Look at the barbaric activities of Daesh (the so-called Islamic State) in Syria, and all it's destroyed.
      The Library of Alexandria comes to mind for me as well: isn't it widely believed now that it was deliberately torched? And personally I find the existence and practices of the Vatican Library totally outrageous: how dare it think t has the right to lock human thoughts away from the rest of humanity?
      I don't actually agree with you that secret knowledge remains and reveals itself no matter what. I think from any point in history, the prevailing worldview of the time filters what can be realised and occludes some modes of thought. There are places you can't get from the current way of seeing things -- as a tiny example, millennials now have no hope of understanding, say, the flower power movement of the 60s (and I don't mean agreeing with it; I just mean understanding it as a way of responding to the world). If we didn't know about Gnosis from texts like the Nag Hammadi books, I doubt we would be able to envision it now.
      That's why the documents (say, in the Vatican Library) are so vital, because those written by those who had another vista open to them wrote to open doors of thought we may not even be able to imagine.

      Internet sad or Psychiatric sad? I REALLY want the knowledge, an appreciation of the best stuff, AND the white dude with a blonde perm borders on Monty Python-esque FUNNY to me. It would have only been more humorous if Benny Hill had played Jesus (Benny Hill soundtrack included). I don't care about the pigmentation of those who might roleplay a perspective that awakens me to Spirit - I don't care about skin pigmentation politics/philosophy/wars of ignorance at all.

    • @bruceburns332
      @bruceburns332 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harkmi3 If its the message you want, then blondie doesn't muddle anything. What is really happening is that Mr. Metro-Blonde is breaking the fairy tale/fantasy of what Jesus looked like. The idea that only certain pigmentations are "allowed" to roleplay Jesus bar Joseph is silly. I do find it funny myself just because it is a bit Monty Python-esque, but with most videos where "talk" is the main or only relevant action I often listen while I do other stuff on my pc - so I wouldn't have to look at Snow White for the duration of the video.

    Getting upset over a documentary's depiction of Jesus' physical form is as removed from gnosis as on can get, but its par for course in today's world where the new "Woke" religion taking over society obsesses over physical "intersectionality" and identity politics. To a gnostic, complaining about Jesus' skin color is like complaining about the color of a prison cell's wallpaper. On a related note, I've seen many people foolishly relate gnosis to trans nonsense as though the gnostics would sympathize with people so obsessed with their physical form that they would undergo horrible invasive surgeries to make it match how they "feel."

    They hylics have no capacity to understand this exhortation to "examine thyself, and know thyself". They also cannot possibly act upon it. A significant point, one which is not addressed in this video, which falsifies the Gnostic doctrines by omitting this crucial point. This point, of the absolute antivalence of the Spiritual and the hylic man is then pretended to be merely parts of the same universal man, ubiquitously. As if it referred to every man as spiritual with a hylic element. Actually, every Spiritual man does have a hylic element (if he is embodied here in this world), but not every hylic man has a Spiritual component, and this is a crucial thing to know about this world.

      Rursus Secondly there is a confusion between Gnosticism (which today is called Sethianism) and Valentinianism, who Irenaios fought against. Valentinianism did not reject the Old Testament God whom they identified with the Demiurge -- but they claimed that the Demiurge was good ... but ineffective until the emergence of Jesus Christ. The Demiurge submitted under Jesus Christ and therefore suddenly became effective in his fight against Satan. Irenaios make a clear distinction between the Gnostics (i.e. the Sethians) and the Valentinians, whom he termed "heretics".

      Rursus Thirdly: the Cathars were not likely to be Gnostics, but instead a late branch of Marcionism. Marcionites were literalist (which the Gnostics *NEVER EVER* were), decidedly anti-Yahweh (which the Gnostics sometimes were, sometimes not). Marcionism gave rise to Paulicianism, which spread to Balkans to found the Bogomils, who spread into south France giving rise to the Cathars.

    The Orthodox did NOT gain salvation through their faith. They were still imprisoned by the flesh and its associated requisite physical world, including the institution of their religion. Jesus said "You must be IN the world but not OF it." The Gnostic is free of the physical world and is not imprisoned by it. He/She is thereby free to unite with God. Therefore, to the Gnostic, death has no meaning.

    Oh... the irony of history and the man who discovered the books! What a sad and brutally horrible story. But perhaps maybe destiny saw him as the most fit of all the potential men in the area to make the discovery? Maybe the others would burn it all or wipe their ends with the pages? I had to take some pauses and take some breaths watching that part.

    The story of the discovery of the books of Nag Hammadi is told at 25:25. At 29:15 the discoverer retells the way the books were mostly destroyed while in the possession of his house, and arrogantly states that he doesn't give a damn about it and it never even entered his mind to. Then he is told the significance, in the broadest of terms, about the books, and one can witness the lowliness within him expressed in the changes in his face. A hylic bastard of the lowest sort. Just like all the rest of the hylics, pure bums, spiritual less-than-nothings.
    I think the motive for his hideous facial expressions which followed upon hearing the effect of the discovery, or rather what his evil negligence and disrespect allowed of it, reinforced in his mind that instead of boasting that he only got 11 Egyptian pounds for it, he perhaps should have been smart enough to figure out a way to get much more for it... It is probably out of feelings stemming from such low considerations that his face changes into flashes of embarrassment.
    He realizes, though, on a deeper level, that he really is not such a saint, not at all, and his entire soul is confused to have led him to boast of his evil acts. Because his motive is not because of a sense of spiritual superiority to a text which has no truth in it, but rather it is the lowest excuse he could give save he found out the text would be worth much much more to OTHERS. He now realizes that his flash of greed for some compensation from all such others overrules his pretenses at piety, and that he'd even wished he kept the complete set of books and guarded them carefully, and gotten wealthy from them.
    What scum. What dishonorable scum. I'd gladly go back to that time and adventure my life against his merely for the right to protect those texts. But enough remain that those who have a true claim to know their contents could reconstruct them from their own Nous, and do so in a way tailored to their own needs, simply by reigniting the Truth Within by means of the merest spark of inspiration from ANY source, all the more from as much as what remains from this otherwise nightmarish event.

      +The Gnostic Truth "Gnosis is the knowledge of what Christ really means... "
      Clothe Christ.. Romans Chapter 13 New Testament
      11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

      Some of what we think that a Christ would say, understood properly in Truth, would be Gnosticism. But the Gnosis is more than those, yet not in contradiction to it, hence concordant with any and all knowledge, including knowledge which any demon can be trained to spout.

    • @arroxas
      @arroxas 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a prohibition during Jesus Christ's time.. even practicing the art of casting away demons, will not be Christ's basis in saving people. Here in Matthew 7:22, 23:
      "Many will say to Me in that day, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name?"
      "And then I will declare to them, "I never knew you, depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness."
      This is one contradiction between Christianity and Gnosticism.

    By knowledge the Gnostic should mean self knowledge. Knowledge of everything else is irrelevant for all purposes other than a reality check on your self knowledge. I've had friends that were dogs where I felt great friendship, this wasn't based on the IQ of the dog. What the dog does know is about itself, self knowledge. Salvation isn't needed, it's a delusion just as sin is a delusion, it is an opinion, and opinions cannot save or damn you. People just have to stop beating themselves up. There's no religion that provides self knowledge other than fostering your self guilt so you can perpetually be crying to Dad(God) to forgive you for your inadequacies. Yet as a material being your limitations which foster this feeling of inadequacy will never go away. Just accept yourself. After all what difference does it make if God has technically forgiven you while you still hold on to guilt. It is beyond the power of God to forgive, that power only exist in yourself. Scripture is of no more help in this endeavor than a comic book.

    • @lecturesbeyondbeyond
      @lecturesbeyondbeyond  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tom George There is a theory, quite good actually, that says the church changed the image of Jesus after a portrait of Cesare Borgia. Because Jesus looked just like the jews and muslims that the christians attacked in Jerusalem. So in order not tot kill people who look like ones prophet from that on Jesus became caucasian. A theory, but it wouldn't surprise me. Just as Buddha became asian rather than indian to suit the culture and ethnicity that carried on with the religion.

    • @tomgeorgearts
      @tomgeorgearts 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @lecturesbeyondbeyond
      @lecturesbeyondbeyond  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tom George Indeed! Also his birthday is never mentioned anywhere, the catholic church knows he wasn't born on the 25 december. But that birth of Jesus now celebrated is the ancient celebration of birth of light as it is the winter solstice at that time of year. Then we have the Buddha who wasn't anthropomorphized until the Buddhist in what is now Afghanistan met with the greeks that conquered with Alexander & Co. The greek robes and style made the artist finally to begin depicting the Buddha. So really none of those people looked the way we think of them probably. It was all style, art and whatever suited the current status quo.

    A blond European playing Jesus? Maybe, if one takes the teachings seriously...
    Indeed, it would be wonderful if more if the scrolls and codices had survived intact.
    UNfortunately, people finding them were very poor; some needed fuel for their fires more than they needed books.
    Also, once they discovered the books had value, some of them broke the remaining ones to smaller bits, to increase how much money they got [thinking more pieces = more money].
    We are lucky any made it out to be translated!
    Then it was more miracles that they were allowed to be translated at all, and not buried in the vaults of Rome.

      O man, thou art as but I was, for I sought after a knowledge, but thus it was indeed vain, for knowledge indeed comes from God alone and not man. Read thou what thou oughtest to read which is the Word of the living God. The Bible. Run not after vain myths for the apostles did not deliver unto us cleverly devised myths but the Word of life which they handled and saw. As they were on the mount, they heard a voice which came forth from the cloud which overshadowed them, which says to the Son,” Thou Art my Beloved Son, in Thee I am well pleased.” Seek those things which come from the river of life that springs forth and abounds much more into a fountain of life. Read thou the book, if thou wilt. And do not begin to ask vain questions from which springs forth innumerable strifes. Read the Word of truth, for the truth shall verily set you free.

    I found one failed explanation here, that being.. 'The Holy Sophia", this requires dissection to get to the roots of what Sophia really is. Briefly..
    Sophia = The Mother (of the Demiurge)
    Mother = Matrix
    Matrix = Matter
    Sophia is the Mother of Matter, which is this Matrix we find ourselves trapped within.
    It is Sophias energy/Lucifers light WHICH IS TRAPPED WITHIN MATTER thus we perceive it as the visible light spectrum.
    It is the duty of the Divine Sparks, which have access to the Father/Christ essence, to transmute and LIBERATE Sophia out of the abomination she created through her ignorance.
    There is nothing HOLY about the Black Sophia/Lucifer. She is fallen aspect within us. she is the SOUL of man which MUST REPENT.
    Peace to all.

      +KanD Johnson Oh, it was maybe in another video of these series. But the theory is based upon Cesare Borgia, a ruler and madman after who's face the new white Jesus got his appearance from. When the Christian fighters went to Jerusalem they found it difficult to kill people (Arabs) who looked like their Jesus. So by making him white it became easier. This is very common, just like Buddha was an Indian and not a fat Asian - each culture that dominate a certain religion make it in their own image. Hope it explained some and more of this you can Google. /All the best
