In climates that go below freezing temp yes, but southern cali heat its actually ideal that you use 5w-20 just because it could get very hot and I have my car on for a long period of time for work.

Good work but just one thing. I’d start the car and run it so the oil can run through all the tiny passages in the engine and completely fill up the oil filter. Then turn engine off and wait 3 minutes and check the level again. It usually goes down a bit. And just for safe measure, I’d fill the oil to the top mark because the engine may burn a little oil between changes. Just MHO.
Don't keep the car up with the jack on use jack stands. What it says on the engine oil cap 0w-20 is the oil you have to use. Oil pan drain plug torque for a 2016 civic EXL 1.5L 4CYL & 2.0L 4CYL is 40 Nm / 30 ft lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench just go slow when it's starting to tighten once it's tight that should be enough. 3.7 US quarts for the 1.5L 4CYL engine and 4.4 US quarts for the 2.0L 4CYL engine.
I believe engineers who designed this car knows the best about the oil. People should use whats recommended in owners manual. Most important thing is to change it regularly.
Always go by the manufacturers recommendations. Using 5w20 may not harm the engine immediately, but it will create long term effects and can actually wear it down much sooner than it should. As the viscosity during cold start is much different than 0w20. So always use the recommended specifications for a lasting longer engine life. In this case, use 0w20 Full Synthetic. Not conventional or blended. Full Synthetic 0w20.

Hey bro you mention around 16:40 that there’s a way to make the Honda aware that you’re using extended oil life like using synthetic but I couldn’t find out where you show how to do that. All you show is how to reset the oil. I’m using Mobil 1 synthetic on my wife’s car and her oil life goes to 0% a lot quicker than usual. Thanks In advance.
I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying. There isn't a way for the car to know that you have started using synthetic oil. What will happen is whenever you reset the oil life light. The oil life light is going to go off at the same amount of mileage no matter what kind of oil you're using. So it's up to you to be aware of how many miles you have gone on the oil that you have. If you're using full synthetic and an extended life oil filter. You should be able to go potentially 2 oil life cycles using the cars oil life system. And you reset the oil life system using the procedure I show at the end of the video. The car does not monitor the oil in any way It is not that sophisticated. Believe it or not your oil life light only monitors how many miles you have gone. That is literally it. It's very very primitive. But it does work and that's why we still use it today.

Call me weird, but I’d rather put my faith in the Japanese engineers who say to use 0w20, as opposed to a guy who doesn’t even use Jack stands to support the vehicle while working under it, saying to use any other type oil. And there is a huge difference between 20 and 30 foot pounds. Sorry for being blunt, because the video was actually very well done. You just added a few anecdotal items that were dangerous and misleading.
You never put the jack stands under the car? What’s the point in having them if you don’t use them, I wouldn’t trust the jack. I saw some of the other comments and you said you used them but at 18:12 in the video the jack stands are still laying in front of the car.
I tried to change the oil in my 2020 Honda Civic hatchback today, but I couldn't get the metal plate off. The two screws at the front were ridiculously tight and I was afraid of stripping the heads on them. This is the first time the car has ever had an oil change, so maybe they over-tighten the screws from the factory. I guess I'll take it to the Honda dealership and hope they will be able to get them off. I stripped one a bit, but hopefully it will still come off. Not sure why they would tighten them so much from the factory!

No definitely don't use 1/2 inch. Taking it off is one thing. But when you put it back on you don't want to over tighten it. If you over tighten the drain bolt you'll end up having to replace the entire drain pan that it plugs into. Because it could end up getting cross-threaded on the way out ruining the oil pan. The drain plug does not need to be put on with an excessive amount of force. It needs to be able to come off eventually too. Of course I don't recommend literally leaving it loose. But most drain plugs only need to be tightened to about 15 foot pounds or so. In short I would never recommend using a 1/2 inch ratchet to change oil. 3/8 is fine
NEVER...get under a car without jack stands. The floor jack shouldnt be used to keep car suspended while you are under the car. Use Jack Stands ...safety first!!
Nick M I usually drive it around the neighborhood for about 5 minutes, then let it sit for 10 minutes. That helps the old oil to flow out easy without burning yourself. FYI.

Hi thanks for bringing up the detailed video. yesterday i was checking the air filter on my honda civic ex 2017. By mistake i disconnect the wire on the hose very next to filter cover. I forgot to put back in. Today in the morning. When i started my car.The display showing me so many errors like cruise control problem,lane departure problem,Brake hold problem and more. Then i realize and open the hood found that wire disconnected. I reconnect it properly. But the display still showing me the issues. Please help me out if you met this problem before or any advice. gursharan singh Unplug your battery and it will reset those lights. OR you can just drive the car and after a few times of turning the car on and off, the computer in the car will relearn and turn off the lights. If it’s still not going off, check engine air filter housing and make sure it’s seated properly and also make sure the plug you originally unplugged that caused your issue is fully back in. You have to hear it click back in. Good luck.
It's best to change the ring because when you tighten the drain plug up it crushes the ring more and more every time you do it. Reusing the same ring maybe one time is probably fine. But I didn't want to recommend that to people in case they felt like they never needed to change it ever. It's just good practice. Had I told people to reuse the same ring people would be blowing up the comments with negativity towards that statement sadly
It sometimes okay to reuse the old one. But eventually you should change it. Even metal drain plug gaskets compress over time. I found plenty of situations where people that don't change their old drain plug gasket end up squishing their old one. And it could even get stuck to the drain pan
This vehicle has an oil life light. So a light should turn on letting you know when to change the oil. I put an oil light reset procedure at the end of this video, if needed. But if you are using full synthetic oil. And an extended life filter. It doesn't hurt the vehicle to go a little longer after the light turns on. Giving you some time to change the oil after the light turns on. Every 5,000 miles is a safe amount.
I have an 2016 LX model, I wanna be able to get more miles per gallon. The lower the oil life the less miles I get when I do a full gas tank. Any tips are helpful since this is my first car and I wanna be able to do all of it by myself
It's possible you are burning off some of the oil by the time the oil life light comes on. Try checking the dipstick to make sure the oil level isn't dropping.
Currently, I'm at 40% oil life and when I gave my car a full tank of gas it was reading 399mpg. When I have it to 100% it gives me 446mpg which is what I wanna be getting.
@@rhyssky8308 You aren't going to be able to get perfect miles per gallon all of the time. Eventually the oil quality goes down, the engine get's older, etc. And some of the oil burns off. You can continuously do oil changes. But then you spend a lot on the oil and filters. And you have to decide if doing oil changes very regularly is worth it to you.
Did you check the dipstick to see if the oil level has changed at all since the oil change? Are you using Full Synthetic motor oil from a quality brand?
Great camera action, BUT horrible advice on oil to use and declining to use torque tool… the Torque wrench clicks when you reach the locked in desired torque and the oil that’s recommended of course is directly from the engineers who designed and constructed the vehicle or machine so they didn’t guess or say “use whatever you want,” although it’s true to use different weights/viscosities of oil, this one likely stays the same under all conditions unless stated in your manufacturers manual… 👍
Thanks for bringing this up. I've actually had that Jack for 6 years no issue. It's a 3 ton jack. And there are stands underneath the vehicle I just didn't show them being placed. The jack is there as an extra precation. And to make it easier to take the stands out and lower the vehicle once finished. Thanks again for bringing this up. I will definitely show the vehicle being lowered on them in the next video for those that aren't familiar with it.
That's literally the same jack as the snap on one. Harbor freight went to the same manufacturer and had them make THE SAME JACK and change the color and name on it. Snap on tried to sue and it failed. Dont talk about what you dont know
Yo Fonzi do you how to reset brake system light i just replaced my rear brakes and rotors and brake system light came on and also red brake light flashes when car is in motion would really appreciate if you or anyone can help me with this issue
I think the problem here was you needed to use a EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) scan tool to put the car into BMM (Brake Maintenance Mode). This way when you set it to BMM through the scanner, the honda will make that handbrake releasing sound. You could potentially damage your calipers by changing Honda's rear brakes without doing this I've heard > now your brake system light comes on.. Best to get it to a garage who does have that scanner and see if they can do what I mentioned in the first sentence

5W-20 and 0W-20 have the same viscosity at operating temperature, but 0W-20 flows better at cold start. Just to let you know.

Its recommended to change the oil filter every oil change? And change also the drain plug washer?
I even poor some of the clean oil through before putting the drain bolt back on. It pushes out more dirty oil that might be stuck in crevices.

You should replace the drain plug to be safe. Some new oil filters come with new drain plug washers. But autozone should have plenty of washers

OR you can just drive the car and after a few times of turning the car on and off, the computer in the car will relearn and turn off the lights. If it’s still not going off, check engine air filter housing and make sure it’s seated properly and also make sure the plug you originally unplugged that caused your issue is fully back in. You have to hear it click back in. Good luck.
Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Then reconnecting it. And running the car to see if it cleared the codes.

It's best to change the ring because when you tighten the drain plug up it crushes the ring more and more every time you do it. Reusing the same ring maybe one time is probably fine. But I didn't want to recommend that to people in case they felt like they never needed to change it ever. It's just good practice.
Had I told people to reuse the same ring people would be blowing up the comments with negativity towards that statement sadly

It sometimes okay to reuse the old one. But eventually you should change it. Even metal drain plug gaskets compress over time. I found plenty of situations where people that don't change their old drain plug gasket end up squishing their old one. And it could even get stuck to the drain pan

How often do you recommend an oil change on this car?
This vehicle has an oil life light. So a light should turn on letting you know when to change the oil. I put an oil light reset procedure at the end of this video, if needed. But if you are using full synthetic oil. And an extended life filter. It doesn't hurt the vehicle to go a little longer after the light turns on. Giving you some time to change the oil after the light turns on. Every 5,000 miles is a safe amount.

I have an 2016 LX model, I wanna be able to get more miles per gallon. The lower the oil life the less miles I get when I do a full gas tank. Any tips are helpful since this is my first car and I wanna be able to do all of it by myself
It's possible you are burning off some of the oil by the time the oil life light comes on. Try checking the dipstick to make sure the oil level isn't dropping.
Also make sure to use full synthetic oil to maintain proper oil quality
Currently, I'm at 40% oil life and when I gave my car a full tank of gas it was reading 399mpg. When I have it to 100% it gives me 446mpg which is what I wanna be getting.
@@rhyssky8308 You aren't going to be able to get perfect miles per gallon all of the time. Eventually the oil quality goes down, the engine get's older, etc. And some of the oil burns off. You can continuously do oil changes. But then you spend a lot on the oil and filters. And you have to decide if doing oil changes very regularly is worth it to you.
Did you check the dipstick to see if the oil level has changed at all since the oil change? Are you using Full Synthetic motor oil from a quality brand?

Great camera action, BUT horrible advice on oil to use and declining to use torque tool… the Torque wrench clicks when you reach the locked in desired torque and the oil that’s recommended of course is directly from the engineers who designed and constructed the vehicle or machine so they didn’t guess or say “use whatever you want,” although it’s true to use different weights/viscosities of oil, this one likely stays the same under all conditions unless stated in your manufacturers manual… 👍

Thanks for bringing this up. I've actually had that Jack for 6 years no issue. It's a 3 ton jack. And there are stands underneath the vehicle I just didn't show them being placed. The jack is there as an extra precation. And to make it easier to take the stands out and lower the vehicle once finished. Thanks again for bringing this up. I will definitely show the vehicle being lowered on them in the next video for those that aren't familiar with it.
That's literally the same jack as the snap on one. Harbor freight went to the same manufacturer and had them make THE SAME JACK and change the color and name on it. Snap on tried to sue and it failed. Dont talk about what you dont know

I have 2018 Honda Civic
I think the problem here was you needed to use a EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) scan tool to put the car into BMM (Brake Maintenance Mode). This way when you set it to BMM through the scanner, the honda will make that handbrake releasing sound. You could potentially damage your calipers by changing Honda's rear brakes without doing this I've heard > now your brake system light comes on.. Best to get it to a garage who does have that scanner and see if they can do what I mentioned in the first sentence
