I’ve been painting with watercolor for about 12 years now. I’ve never painted outside or traveled with my art supplies, but I want to this summer. I’ve seen so many videos on travel kits, and this is the best one I’ve seen. Thank you for sharing and making this video. It really helps, and it’s a fantastic set up!
So cool! Thank you! I have loved painting outside. Too bad it is now winter here and I have only gone outside to do art once in the last three months. Good luck out there, with so much experience under your belt I bet you will have a great time 😄
Bravo!! I just retired and decided to get back to my artistic side and I hike and wanted a reasonable small setup to take with me !! I’ve watched over 60 videos on this subject … by far, this is the best video not only for its portability but its cost and quality. I’ve ordered a few items from your Amazon suggestions and I’m super excited to get started… thank you!
Just yesterday I discovered a foldable clipboard. Have it ordered, so I can only speculate that it will be the space saver I'm hoping for. Search for "nurses clipboard". Who knew? Thanks for your minimalist set up video with just enough supplies!
Love your setup. I have kept a regular sized plastic clipboard in my car with velcro pieces on it. I have little Tupperware containers that the velcro work on. I do keep one regular brush in my car. When I use that clipboard, it's on my lap. Found too heavy for wrists standing. I have also had in my car a round zippered lunch " pail". In this, I have a cheap set of full water brushes, a tin of watercolor pencils, a tin of colored pencils, an A5 sketchbook that has a Perfect Pencil attached, and a pencil holder that straps to the sketchbook. In it, have a four colored pen, a blue Col-erase pencil, and a Blackwing pencil. The Perfect Pencil besides an eraser end has a built-in pencil sharpener. In the summer, I like to sketch at a local art museum. Can only take my pencils, sketchbook, and eraser in there. In the front on the "pail" is a kneaded eraser in plastic container, a regular sharpener, and bag for shavings. There is also a really cute kit with metal silverware in with my art stuff. Recently I added to my art stash in my car. I created a little watercolor palette with an empty gum box and a glue gun. Created the dividers with the glue gun. I filled with the same ten Daniel Smith colors I keep in an Expeditionary Arts Pocket Palette (one of my most prized possessions). I put business card size peel and stick magnets on top and bottom. In the pouch I keep the watercolor palette, I have an A6 sketchbook, two magnetic clips, and a small clipboard. In the sketchbook, I have some plastic pieces that will protect the size of the sketchbook I attach my palette on. This setup is light enough I can stand quite a while. During covid, when I could only walk in my subdivision, I came up with what I call my walkabout setup. Living in Florida, this setup allows me, with the right wicking clithes, to spend more time sketching outside. I keep that setup ready to go in my house. I use a spiral notebook (usually A5 Strathmore Visual Journal Mixed Media) clipped on a shoulder strap. I have a water bottle in a cross body holder. Everything else is in a cargo shorts (or pants) pocket. I have a pen on the sketchbook that usually ends in a pocket. If bringing mechanical pencil bring kneaded eraser. Have small plastic bag for sketchbook in case of rain, waterbrush, small holder with tissues, paper napkin, and a quarter piece of a handkerchief. I have a plastic pouch that gets attached to a belt. In there I either have my Pocket Palette and magnet OR six Platinum Preppy pens filled with a rainbow of water soluble inks. I started with gel pens, got the Preppies because of price and refillability. Months later I got the Pocket palette. Hope I haven't overwhelmed you with all of this. Plein air and/or urban sketching is an evolving process for me. Have gone through many changes in the bigger gear I take when with groups or if have more time. Another favorite acquisition is a lightweight four-legged folding stool with shoulder strap. For years, I had a three legged stool that I could carry in a pack. I hated the wobbliness and weighted packs are a problem for me.
Overwhelm! No, this is awesome!!! I love seeing/reading about other peoples set ups. I find it so interesting and diverse! People come up with the most interesting solutions for their particular situations. I would love to see yours! Make a video :) You are taking so many different mediums on the go. Very cool! How do you find the Strathmore Visual Journal Mixed Media? I have considered trying this sketchbook. How does it take water?
It does okay with water but not huge amounts. When I'm using it from a standing position and with waterbrush, not doing weird in wet. Have had some sections buckle where I went over it. Almost made it 3D. The mixed media is 100% cotton but only 90#. Their watercolor Visual Journal is 140# but not 100% cotton.
I know right! Great minds :) I now am working with more mixed media and still need to figure out how to easily travel with coloured pencils, neocolor, and some paint pens. No good solutions have jumped out yet, but figuring it out is half the fun :) Happy arting and YouTubing!
Great video! I find it really helpful! It's so interesting to see the way other artists create kits for themselves. There are a lot of interesting stuff in yours. My travel kit is maybe 20 times smaller (I'm a beginner and minimalist 😁)
I think it depends on where you plan to be painting as well :) This is kinda my sit down and paint one view set up. Or maybe standing for less than an hour. I have since also developed a walking around/ quick sketching set up as well. The issue I am now having is that I am loving using other media on top of the watercolor! It is making for some difficult choices before heading out :) Thanks for your comment!
I really enjoyed this. I have a lot of similar items for my kit. I have a leather watercolor journal that is handmade and I love it because bands hold the paper inside so I can cut any paper I like and place it in the journal for my plein air kit
I have white Schmincke gouache in my palette and it hasn't fallen out yet. I don't take it outside all the time, but it has traveled some and still been ok. It might depend on the manufacturer, but mine has been fine. Thanks for the fun video.
This is GREAT! Just what I have been looking to make! They are so expensive to purchase. Thx sooo much. I am new to urban sketching and watercolor painting and am going to Japan soon. I plan to draw and paint away!
Thanks! I like it too! I have been using it on a trip for the last week and it has been working great. The only addition I would make is somewhere to attach the brushes/pencil. Not all my cloths have pockets for them if I am standing up.
I'm going away for a few days and looking into a little set. I'm thinking of water brushes instead of travel brushes and water. Also a little spray too activate my paints. I'm a beginner too.
Cool! I have since tried other more expensive set ups, which work great when I can carry more, but for a quick trip, or trying to stay light, this is my go to :)
I really liked this setup. It is very economical and easy to use. I wanted something like this. Didn’t want to have to buy an expensive easel. Good job!
Thanks! I continue to use it even through it is winter. I even use the clipboard when I am doing more mixed media stuff outside, it just makes sketchbooks easier to manage :)
This is a cool mobile art kit! The travel brush sets I've seen from Escoda and Princeton are expensive, so it's nice to see a more affordable option from Fuumui.
I had the Fuumui ones, I ended up selling them off. I have some Jackson Artica travel brushes now that are great (same exact brushes as Escoda Perlas but cheaper). Jackson's now has a US store in Maine, so shipping is no longer insanely expensive.
Nice set up! I think I have one of those Meeden palettes but haven’t set it up yet. I have been using the Folio palette from Art Toolkit and love its portability. Nice video! :)
Where did you buy the clips with the magnets? I am trying hard to find some to buy. Or, if anyone has a suggestion for with which words to search for them, that would be great, too!
It says that they are synthetic. I think I just went for the ones that had a higher review rating. Travel Watercolor Brushes,... www.amazon.ca/dp/B0912JK7NP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Hi Raymond! I am making these videos completely on my phone and making clickable links seems to be beyond me with this setup. What are you interested in? I can send the whole name and where I got it from :)
A. Small collapsable flask is nice for you bag and a small tube of white gouache or Chinese white and a tube resist Would not take up that much mor room Good luck ion your new art journey

@@valerietiffany3420 cool! I have since tied other set ups but I keep going back to mostly these items. Hope you have wonderful sketching adventures!

Foldable clipboard, I will need to look into this 👀 Thanks!

Hi! It was lovely looking through your bag - so funny seeing the similarities we have! Love your bag!

I’m returning to watercolors. Been looking for a plein air set up and your video and set up look like the best option for me. Thank you for sharing!,

Love the simplicity of this!❤

Love the magnetic clips!
very creative setup. I like it

Great video! That fountain pen is a Lamy AL-Star. I have Safaris and love them!
Awesome! Thanks! I love it too, it never leaks…compared to the other one I have :)
Thanks for your video. I love your kit. Very good set up 😊
Thanks! The clipboard is especially useful :)
Nice minimalist setup, very practical. Love it!
I love it too! I continue to use it, it is so versatile to help me contain my sketchbook and materials :) Thanks for the comment!!
Great setup! I’m making one to use this summer, but am using a legal sized clipboard. Can’t wait to try it out. Thanks for the inspiration!
How cool! Thanks! Hope you enjoy your plein air adventures!!
I'm going away for a few days and looking into a little set. I'm thinking of water brushes instead of travel brushes and water. Also a little spray too activate my paints. I'm a beginner too.
I love your pallet, great greens!
Thanks! Those Schmincke super granulating paints are AMAZING!!!
So fantastic and smart!! I have not been able to figure out a good setup, but this looks great!
Cool! I have since tried other more expensive set ups, which work great when I can carry more, but for a quick trip, or trying to stay light, this is my go to :)

Great setup.
Thanks! I am still loving it!
This is a cool mobile art kit! The travel brush sets I've seen from Escoda and Princeton are expensive, so it's nice to see a more affordable option from Fuumui.
For my purposes they have been working great! I actually pull the medium out to even paint at home sometimes! Thanks for your comment :)
I had the Fuumui ones, I ended up selling them off. I have some Jackson Artica travel brushes now that are great (same exact brushes as Escoda Perlas but cheaper). Jackson's now has a US store in Maine, so shipping is no longer insanely expensive.
Great set up!👍
Thanks! Still treating me well even though I use more than just watercolor these days :)
Very nice video, very useful and interesting😍👍
Cool! Thanks!
This is really helpful. Thankyou ❤❤❤
Awesome! The board continues to work great, I had it out today :)
Nice set up! I think I have one of those Meeden palettes but haven’t set it up yet. I have been using the Folio palette from Art Toolkit and love its portability. Nice video! :)
Thanks! I will have to look up this Folio palette you speak of :)
Where did you buy the clips with the magnets? I am trying hard to find some to buy. Or, if anyone has a suggestion for with which words to search for them, that would be great, too!
Are those brushes the squirrel ones or synthetic. I have been looking at the squirrel ones and it’s about £5 more

Nice set up, Any links for those products?

Thanks!! Some extra water can be good 👍
Thanks for this - it's great, but no real animal fur for me - cruelty free art.
