PleinAirpril Debrief: The good, the not so good, and the windy
What a wild month. The laundry did not get put away, but I was able to paint or create outside almost everyday in April. The missed days were due to being just so tired I could not fathom heading out. I allowed myself the grace to be cool with this exhaustion, being human and all, and just headed out again the following day. It was an amazing experience that I will treasure. I learned a lot about what kind of art I enjoy creating, materials that work well plein air, and got in lots of practice sketching bare trees. This video is a flip through of my sketchbook with some video that I took while on location. This was an excellent start to the plein air season. I started in the snow wearing ski pants and ended in shorts. What a cool way to experience the change of the season.
I have linked mostly to Amazon for international ease, but please check out many of the same products at your local art store (if lucky enough to have one).

Hi! I am Lauren. I let a fear of failure, worry about what my work should look like, and possible criticism from others hold me back from working on painting for a long time. I worried what someone would think of me, with no background or education in art, being so presumptuous as to take up space doing art. Although I still feel this way sometimes I have placed less importance on these feelings and more importance on finding joy in my life’s journey. Sharing my art on Instagram and here on TH-cam has shown me that the vast majority of people are just trying to do the same thing, and are supportive, act as mentors, or find similarities between our experiences. If you are reading this and feelings of doubt and worry are stopping you from trying something you think you might enjoy, try to silence those voices, even just for a little time. There is such joy in creating art and sharing the journey. I hope you can find/continue to find some joy too :)

Plein Air Travel Setup Updated April 2023 ( I also enjoy the odd Urban Sketching session)

Preparing for PleinAirpril: How I am approaching painting outside for the month of April

I am so excited to try #pleinAirpril this year. I plan on painting outside, from life, for 25 of the 30 days in April. Even though it is cold here in Canada and there is still so much dirty snow on the very brown ground. Hopefully by the end of April there might be some green. If you are participating let me know, I would love to virtually come and see what you are up to over this month. Or, if...

    Bravo!! I just retired and decided to get back to my artistic side and I hike and wanted a reasonable small setup to take with me !! I’ve watched over 60 videos on this subject … by far, this is the best video not only for its portability but its cost and quality. I’ve ordered a few items from your Amazon suggestions and I’m super excited to get started… thank you!

    Hope this isn't repeating someone else said but it is easy to spray paint your palette with white spray paint which will keep the metal from rusting and will give you a nice mixing area as you can spray the whole eyeshadow palette. Krylon makes paint that will adhere to just about anything.

    • @makingmeaningnow
      @makingmeaningnow ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! This set up video was filled last year and for the little watercolor paintings I was doing this was more than enough water. I have since moved into plein air painting with gouache and using other media on top, like crayon or colored pencils. For this I do find I need more water. However, for urban sketching, I want to be able to move fast so I still use the little clip on water container. I rarely opened the second pot even. I find I don’t use the water brushes unless I am traveling ultra light. Hope this helps!

    If I was using gouache more, I think I’d get a small set of M Grahams, and paint with gouache and watercolor combined. MG is my favorite watercolor brand and I think I will like the texture in gouache as well. I do have Arteza in tubes and Caran d’Ache in pans, which are not as opaque but convenient to use.

    • @makingmeaningnow
      @makingmeaningnow ปีที่แล้ว

      One day I would like to try the M. Grahams too. The HIMI was a good first palette for me, but the paint just doesn’t mix or spread as nicely as the Holbein I use now. I still use the HIMI with my son and have recently used it to paint paper to collage with, it is still decent paint :) How do you like the Caran d’Ache pans? Do they see much use? I have heard mixed reviews.

    • @R_H21
      @R_H21 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makingmeaningnow The CD pans aren’t as opaque as tube gouache so you have to add multiple layers. But I love that I can just open my palette and they’re ready to use (instead of opening a box, digging through tubes, picking out colors, etc.) Like I said I like to combine watercolor and gouache so I guess they do the job for me. If I want more of an ‘oil painting’ sort of look, then I know I’ll need to get my tubes out. Have you heard of James Gurney? If not, he does urban sketches and works with watercolor, gouache and casein. Check him out, I love, love, love his style. If I paint more in gouache, I’d want my work to look like his.

  • @R_H21
    @R_H21 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ugh. I made a long comment with suggestions but not sure it was posted. I wanted to add…… if you’re going to use cloth on your wrist to wipe your brush, be careful with paints that have heavy metals such as cadmiums. Best not to touch those. Check your brands to see if the manufacturers labeled your paints with a cancer warning.

    • @makingmeaningnow
      @makingmeaningnow ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, yes, I realized this after using it and my wrist got wet 😂 Don’t know why I didn’t think of this before. I now clip the cloth next to the palette like I did before :) Turns out I prefer a larger set up than this anyway so it works great that way. Thanks for your concern.

  • @R_H21
    @R_H21 ปีที่แล้ว

    How did your gouache palette work out? Did the paints solidify? Did they run? Did you get mold? What’s the recipe for the water honey mixture, and how much did you add to each paint?

    • @makingmeaningnow
      @makingmeaningnow ปีที่แล้ว

      The palette worked great, and continues to do so. The paint stayed ‘wet’ for about two weeks. I was using them daily as well as spritzing them morning and night. After that they started to dry out one by one. If there was a small amount of paint left it got crumbly, but fuller pans have been fine. I continue to use them on location and it has been about two months now. They work well for out and about but I would prefer to use fresh at home. As for mold, I live in a rather dry climate, mold isn’t much of an issue for anything here, so my experience probably isn’t helpful in this regard :) The artist I saw add the honey said she put about a half teaspoon in a small glass. I put about that in the small container you see in the video. I don’t know if it really did anything :) Hope that is helpful!
