I’ve been binge watching your videos. Its amazing to see how far you’ve come along in a short period, and how your art kit has changed. I love that know what you like and what works for you, even if that means packing more. I found you because I was looking for tiny art kits, but I’m realizing that maybe I should focus more on what will help me create a better painting and less on a trying so hard to have a minimalist kit.
This comment made my day ♥️ I was really into trying to minimize when I first started but now I enjoy having different kits for different activities. I do have an ultra mini for when weight is an issue or space. However, most of the time I can carry a backpack and it is rarely very far. Why not bring all the stuff I am finding fun :) I also have a car kit that can just stay in the car and get really warm and cold without worry…..And an around the house kit for visual journaling 😂
Hi Lauren! Are you taking a break from YT or have you given it up? I wanted to let you know I got the stool you showed and I love it. It’s a little heavy but that’s because it’s sturdy, much better than another one I got that is light but super flimsy. So thanks for sharing! I use my stool when I go plein air painting, even at the mall. Hope you’re still painting!!
Hi! Still painting but not really sharing. I found editing TH-cam videos to take a lot of time and I wasn’t super enjoying it. I share more on Instagram. Glad to hear you are liking the stool! I am looking forward to warmer weather and getting back out plein-air. Nothing like it on a beautiful day :)
Nice setup! I’ve recently got the double water cups and the magnetic clips and they work great. I’m channeling my old French teacher here but “plein” is pronounced “plan”.
Some inktense are amazing for a more natural and muted plein air set up actually! My all time fav is Madder Brown (watered down it’s a pale skin tone) it’s also amazing in mixes. You can also find a way to abrade plastic (such as duralar with a scrubby) to be able to pallet and mix water soluble crayons, inktense, pencils, etc. Here are the other inktense I recommend (not including the new 28 I don’t have those yet); light olive, fern, leaf green, mustard, amber, tan, oak, saddle brown, willow, baked earth, red oxide, bark, sepia ink, Indian ink, charcoal grey, Payne’s grey, neutral grey. I like how they are intense but I find this list is my ‘naturals’ also I find Chinese ink to be the darkest black. Also you can colour very lightly and layer them then wet to reveal the true colour! I also reccomend trying makeup brushes for painting. Even decent dollar store ones are great. Soft effects, blending and smooth painting. Also the Faber-Castel dust free eraser can erase coloured pencils! It allows you to now sketch with any coloured pencil. A miniature book of reference (such as a pocket book of flowers, insects, birds etc) or reference you print and carry can help and give you inspiration when out if the landscape needs more or you are in an animal mood etc. I also love the Bimoji brushpens by Kuretake. They have super black very instantly drying waterproof and alcohol proof ink! 5 seconds is enough to layer watercolour or gouache on top! The long brush and finest points are my favs of all. Sometimes a 5 variety pack is for sale on Amazon. But it’s for a more black lineart heavy style. Fun video, great set up!
Nice setup, I am looking at building an urban sketch kit. I do a lot of urban sketching, and my setup is a mess, but great exercise. I have the same clip board I am looking to do also the same setup. But I've also made up my mind to make a Gurney Easel variation next week. Like the solutions, white gouache is good. But I'd ditch that black if I was you. Maybe try a Neutral Tint instead, similar results but softer and easier to feel harmonic - black is unforgiving.
I too have been tempted into the Gurney easel lifestyle :) I am not feeling very conficdent in constructing one so I might buy one off someone on Etsy. Good tip with the neutral tint! I have just been having such a hard time mixing nice darker colors consistently and especially with the weather I have needed a cheat code of sorts 😂 Thanks!
They are softer and the core is larger compared to prisma. I really like how they lay down though, really creamy, lots of texture. Definitely not good for detail but the colours are AMAZING! Their only downside is the very limited range :) Of the brands/kinds of pencil crayons I have tried if I had to keep only one it would definitely be the Derwent Drawing hands down! For the work I am currently doing anyways :)
@@melissamartinart they are a great pencil. I have seen the whole set for as low as $50 so they can be pretty ‘economical’ too compared to some other brands outside of primsacolor and ‘student grade’.
Ty. I love your setup. Ty for sharing!
Your setup is perfect, a place to sit, with choices on what to use!
Yeah, I tried the very minimalist kit life, it want for me. Turns out I need all the options 😂 And the seat is such a great upgrade! Thanks!

Wow!! So many recommendations that I hadn’t heard about! Thanks! I will have to look these all up! I won’t give up on the intense yet ;)

How do find the derwent drawing pencils compare to prismacolor?

@@makingmeaningnow oh, SOLD! Haha, I will check them out next time I’m at the art store. I’m so tired of my Prismacolor tips breaking all the time!
