    Misconceptions1. Teepees were not intended as permanent lodging. They were intended as shelters when hunting2. Some American Indian nations did have writing.3. Some Indian nations had indoor plumbing4. Not all Native Indian Americans look like the movie Indians5. Not all speak the same language6. A tribe is not a nation but part of a nation.7. Yes, there are American Indian scientists etc8. Squanto was highly educated, could read, speak & write more than one language. He was actually better educated than the white settlers he tried to help.

    I grew up on horses in Nomad life. We have hospitals, medicines, and schools. When I came to the states, I passed all my math classes in a blink of an eye. I am fluent in English, Russian, Spanish and French. I am an engineering grad student at Ivy League School. We, nomads, have computers, Internets, cell phones like everyone else. We are self-sufficient, therefore we don't slave ourselves for rent, car payment, traffic tickets, taxes and mortgage etc. Our land, fruit, and animals are free.

    From an old Irish chick in south Florida, PLEASE KNOW, there are whites out here who love and appreciate the uniqueness of Your culture.
    Please, stand PROUD. Your People are loved and admired by non natives.
    My ancestors were friends with yours, your People saved my ancestors lives, and were almost as surprised by government's invasion and take over as your People were... you'll always be in my heart. I would not be here without the help Your people provided.
    Forever grateful!!!

    Natives are the only race I think should stay mostly pure. There aren't as many pure blood Indians any more. Settlers and army men killed them. They are an important part of our national history that is dying out.

      I absolutely agree, but sadly, most if not all real native north americans are sadly extinct. There are still a lot of real native americans in latin america, but I'm afraid that if they don't get their own countries, they'll be slowly racially assimilated by the non-native majority.

    I think it's not right to call them "indians" . I am an Indian...and my country India means the land of river Indus...So just because one idiot had no navigation skills i think its wrong to call native americans "indians". It is insulting to them and us as well.

    • @Draconic
      @Draconic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      they have agreed to that title for generations. The word "indian" changed overtime as English changes. Pretty sure back then they were just thinking Indian=tribal people. That is why they also call them native Americans more often than "native indians." Btw, should u be more concerned with other more important things than whining about being insulted just because people back then used some word to call others?

    • @Gorkha_plant
      @Gorkha_plant 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Draconic Ryuken lol...calm down draco. i have read many other sites where some native Americans don't like to be called that that's why i was voicing my opinion.. lol. if they like to be called that frankly i don't give a fuck then. And yes seems like the "indians" have much more to be worried about. :) have a good day.

      @jackie62496 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It depends on the person you ask. You cannot speak for every Native American/Indian. Some are fine with either title, some are fine with only one. It all goes down to the individual. Some don't like "Native American" because it makes them sound like people of the past as if they have died out. Etc, etc.... just depends on the person.

    • @anawkwardsweetpotato4728
      @anawkwardsweetpotato4728 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree. India is a South Asian country. The term "Indian" came from Columbus who thought he landed in India, so that's why Nativer Americans are called "Indian". I think it's stupid and I cringe every time a Native American calls themselves that and then defends the title. Indians do not come from the Americas.

    It's true about color. Also, the Dravidians of southern India are now back to black skin, while their genetic ancestors of 40,000 years ago were white like the Arians and those of 75 000 years were black as the Ethiopians are ... the color of the skin adapts to the latitude and sunshine through a few hundred generations.

    Also, some Solutrean weapons found in Virginia, show us that the taking of territory by Europeans dates back over 17,000 years, they sailed along the southern edge of the ice, which was crossing the Atlantic at the latitude of Newfoundland, and were hunting seals and bears (broadcast on Arte of 30/12/2004). They were the ancestors of the current Basque population, genetically identified as the oldest Europeans.

    • @robynpruitt1116
      @robynpruitt1116 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! They are our ancestors. I am a descendant of the Susquehannock, Wolf Clan. The only reason we survived was from the safe refuge from the Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabeg tribes and the French. The Susquehannock are a white tribe, said to be extinct, yet still not recognized as Indigenous. We are not extinct, most don't know or are too fearful to say out loud that they are descendants of the Susquehannock. I hope this changes.

    You have to understand Historically there a Millions who are Native American and are unable to be apart of the dying cultures because of Blood Quantum laws, Skin Color ect. Your correct in the idea that being a true member of the tribe is to know and have strong identity in the culture. However there are millions of people who are dumped in the white or black demographics who have the brains and hearts to revive the culture since it is dwindling.Those same souls are most definitely our relatives

    I have to agree with @trooper Stew. Indigenous people of the Americas have come from northern asia, and have settled in different areas in the Americas, such as Canada, the US, Mexico and Peru. The indigenous people of Mexico, are Native to the Americas, and can be the descendants of the peoples who settled in the Americas 10,000+ years ago. Therefore, the Mexicans are Native Americans. Don't like it, that's fine. It's evolution.

    When they say that we are the same as them that has always been true just because in the past they lived different ways then us that doesn't make them different. We are all the same just because we live differently shouldn't matter but it does for some weird reason. Some ex friends I had didn't want to be my friends anymore because I'm 1/5 Native American which is stupid. But that doesn't matter because we are and always are the same. :)

    Just wipe off the word "Indians" from the description. These guys are native Americans. Indians are the people who come from the land of Indus which was the world's greatest civilisation and full of wealth, gold and spices and it was that land the white Europeans were after and not these folks. Well, eventually Vasco Da Gama, the Portuguese did find us.

      87willus What a lame-duck answer. 'Mestizo' does not signify, in any way shape or form, exact equal proportions (50/50) of Native-American/European. Also, most or many mestizos usually tend to carry more Native-American ancestry and are only labeled as mestizos due to them self-identifying under the umbrella of "Mexican" and/or cultural de-attachment (ignorance/self-hate).

    Excuse me for my english because I'm french. American Indigenous would be a better word than Indian or Native. But this is not the problem. I'm really choked that white Americans don't want to admit that a genocide has occurred in America. They should learn that at school as we do in Europe with nazism and the jew genocide. That would be good for everybody. That's upset me Americans try to give lessons to the world and are unable to face reality in their country. By the way I'm far from to be an anti american so don't blame me. I'm interested with some aspects of the american culture and I'm always sad for the "natives". 4.4 millions that's ridiculous :( That not even half of the inhabitants of Paris and suburbs, but in a giant country. For all the haters, if people could respect each other that would a major step for humanity.

      So easy to say what this country should teach and not "like in France". before making statement of any kind people look at themself in the mirror
      France has it own issues with some part of the population consequenses of both slavery and colonisation. and until now because France refuse to face the reality of its unglory past we're still struggling with a lot of negativity.
      Oh yes they teach in school about the nazis and all that (which is absolutly normal) but they teach enough about the other darkest pasts of this country.
      It's not that different after all
      check out how very well right wingers are doing in France now and people affiliated to them and/or their cause
      always easier to judge other without judging itself first
      sad.

      Where do you read I said France is perfect ? Nowhere. I know there are big problems here and I know the inglorious past of my country because we learn it at school (not enough but we learn it). By the way I don't judge I make a difference between governments and people of a country. Ciao.

    Native americans are decendant from asians,a full blooded one will have part of asians features and characteristics such as their squenty eyes.Native americans cross a land bridge which doesn't exist anymore.Eskimos are also asians,not white,black or whatever race.Hawians are also asians or polynesians.Native american do not have pale skin like chinese people,they have tan.
    There are hardly any full blooded native americans,now that they are mixed alot of people will not see one with asian characteristic thinking they came from whites or black people even hispanic.

    The color of your skin is not your Identity if you don't want it to be. Its all about the will to learn about your heritage and be blessed with that connection to it. You are blessed to have that been immersed in your heritage, but there's so many who are just like you are barred from such a thing because the biggest problem facing the Tribes today isn't alcoholism, diabetes, poverty, but it's fear and segregation, things taught by the White Controlled Government. I agree that tribes should keep their cultures, but it's dangerous to assume that they should pull themselves up by their bootstraps when they don't have proper resources, or even basic living conditions, on most reservations. Ideally, there should be organizations that work WITH the community to figure out what is needed to flourish and keep traditions alive, whether through financial or other means. And there are other ways to support - raising awareness about harmful stereotypes, for instance

    Each tribe is a sovereign nation and determines citizenship not always by blood. Also, each tribal citizen has a family history that reflects the larger history of the United States and can have ancestry from all over the world and that is a beautiful thing. Its about kinship and expanding the hoop and those are central ideas to who we are as NDN people.

    I can't speak for all natives but many take pride in their heritage. So, being told you look Asian or Hispanic, (the two most common mistakes) can be an insult. Native's have their own distinct features like any other ethnicity, and it even depends on what type of native you are. Most ppl just don't assume native when you meet someone, cuz its not that common. But my point is no one really wants to be told they look like something they aren't, or they don't identify with. ~ I'm also Ojibwe.
