  • This week we bring you “A Conversation With Native Americans on Race,” the latest installment in our wide-ranging “Conversation on Race” series. Directed by Michèle Stephenson and Brian Young, the film grapples with the racist contradictions of a country that, many feel, would prefer it if Native Americans didn’t exist.

I briefly worked at the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) some years ago, and it was wild. It was staffed with a team of white genealogists and a conservative (using this term for a lack of a better word) Native American Branch Chief. They engaged in determining who was Native and which tribes were considered legitimate. At the time, this was being done to see who would be granted casino licenses, and tribes were being turned down left and right. Needless to say that the Native people had a few choice words for that branch chief. The Bureau was a part of the Department of Interior, which was being monitored and investigated for embezzling millions of dollars designated for the Native peoples (I’m not implying that BIA staff was involved. The investigation was occurring on a higher level.) It was so bad that employees weren’t even allowed to use the internet. I’d never seen anything like that, and the experience was eye opening.

A white boy can consider himself native and many do.
American Indians were here before native Americans.
      Natives are actually from SIBERIA.
All these watered down natives like the one in the video are impostors.

I have always followed what has been going on with blacks in the United States for centuries. you are in the same case as these people of color, so wake up and continue to fight, so that one day the Amerindian land comes back to you.

DELTA-SKY LIGHT Whites were indigenous people once too (everyone was once indigenous to a continent for that matter). They were the first race of people to be colonized (via the Roman Empire).....this was long before Natives were colonized. Before that, whites were of Viking, Barbarian, and Celtic tribes. I realize Romans were White as well, but nonetheless, that was the first sign on earth of mass colonization of one ethnicity over another. Essentially, whites did to other races what was done to them long before. I’m not condoning it....but any person who wants to dig deeper into it would realize that their history is definitely a setting event to them colonizing others. Europe is and always has been much more crowded and has tons of different cultures crammed next to each other. Mass scale warfare was going on there long before it was in North America. I’m sure there was tribal warfare in North America, but nothing on the level of what was going on in Europe.

      @SolAya21 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@jenniferjacksonescogido7093 yeah I understand that. I just think it's important to realize that this is what it means to be Black in practically any western dominated society. It is to be shunned, hated, and be vilified. The old man is doing what he knows he has to do because of the racism in his society. There is no agreement he needs to make with his daughter. The issue is the society that has traumatized him so much that his very existence can cause harm to others. This is the part that mixed people seem to struggle with. He will never come out of his room in his life he has seen enough trauma and pain for his mere existence that in order to keep him safe he refuses to even be outside. So to me as a full black person I understand why he has to do it and I respect him deeply for it because she will not change their views those views will just have to die with their generation (hopefully). In the meantime he gave his daughter a chance to live a normal life but what else can you do. White people have poisoned the world against us. Including a group that should see us as their brother as we have experienced the same level of hate but even they deny us, even though there are probably more black people with land right higher percentages of native blood over white people yet they are the ones native communities are happy to claim and seek approval from. It's sad but it's reality. The action he is performing is not just the literal description of what he did but the reality of what it means to be Black in the world..hated, vilified, demonized and exploited to no ends. I appreciate the natives that understand this but I was surprised this type of racism existed but like with everything being Black I'm not too surprised that another group has found every reason to hate us.

My tribe considers a person a part of our tribe if they are 50%, or more. They are trying to save our tribe’s blood as pure as they can. Sucks though because I have nieces and nephews who will never be a part of our tribe, but they can say they have Native blood in them because they are 75% Black. I have some Black features, but my Native side is more prominent. I have a strong red tone to my brown skin along with coal black straight hair, and I understand along with speak our tribal language. I never lived on our reservation, but I go back to visit. I speak English all of the time for the most part because I live in a city. I represent my Native culture as well as Black culture.

My wife is a Celt, born and raised, with a strong connection to her family and home, in Ireland. They have never forgotten the incredible gift the Choctaw People gave during the Irish famine, in 1847, even though they were suffering themselves. The Choctow people, having just endured the Trail of Tears, still had the humanity and compassion, to send what little they could spare , to help the Irish, something their English Overlords, refused to do. There is a sculpture, called Kindred Spirits, in Cork, Ireland to commemorate this great gift. It is a circle of eagle feathers, forming a bowl shape, to represent the gift of food. it is a very humbling and emotional experience, to stand there looking at that sculpture, and be reminded of what two great native peoples endured on their own soils, opposite sides of the Atlantic physically, but closer in mind and spirit, then I have ever known two tribes and clans to be.

I always thought that proving your Native ties was to prevent non-Native people from taking Native benefits (i.e. college funds), I never before though of it as a way to track "dilution" to the point of no longer providing benefits and stealing back the land provided. @@juanrisa945 Trust me Indigenous People receive plenty of help/Resources already. You should see them up in Canada. I can't walk through downtown in my city without being begged for either money or a cig by some drunk native missing half their teeth. Some of those who ask actually get mad that I have no handouts for them. Been called quite a few colorful racial names by them too lol.
Natives get countless benefits such as not needing to buy hunting or fishing licenses, and not having to even follow the hunting/fishing rules that non native people have to follow. Also prescription coverage, paid schooling (college/university), along with money from their band office (my ex got $4000 onetime just for being native....)
Then they say that the government is trying to "oppress" them somehow... Like really? They get better rights/opportunities than anyone else in Canada. But it's still not good enough so they got to ask for more and bum off me in the mean time? Lmao
If you want them to be treated "fairly" Then take away all those perks and make them like everyone else. It'll have the 2 sided effect of people no longer seeing them as a bunch of welfare low life's, because now they'll have to work as hard as everyone else to get someplace in life.

I grew up being told I was native, and being told many different things about my native heritage. When I got older I found out that my family knew next to nothing about our heritage. We all grew up being told that all natives make dreamcatchers and wear feathers in their hair, in what I would later learn is called culture appropriation. The knowledge that my family had on our culture was essentially erased from generation to generation. I had a really good teacher in High School teach me and my classmates about the thousands of different tribes that I had not known before. I was able to get more specific answers from my mother on which native tribes we thought we descended from, but I want to know for sure.
It's going to be awhile before I can do that, but it absolutely breaks my heart on how little I and my family know.

Listening to how Native is considered makes me realize that it’s part of the white man tactic! I was watching that show by Henry Gates and he talked about how if your mother was a slave then you were a slave also! They did it this way because many of the fathers weren’t slaves and they couldn’t enslave by generations if they could be free through the father! I think that’s part of why you’re Native through your mother! There were some black families who had a white mother and ended up being free because their mother was free! One thing that people don't realize is that European and Indigenous lived together for hundreds of years, intermarrying and exchanging culture. There are millions upon millions of people in the United States who have Native Ancestry. And yet some out there believe only those of "pure" ethnicity should be recognized as Native to this land. There are only 8 people left who speak my Native language. None of them are "pure". So I guess we no longer exist. And my brother shouldn't be teaching his children the language, because after all, what does it matter. According to many Indigenous people, we are too watered down to be recognized. Racism comes in many forms. Never be ashamed of who you are. Do not let people tell you that you are less because of what blood you carry.

I am American Indian, and the constant March in race baiting and using skin color/or special group which is the basically the only thing that’s very important about you. Race is now how a person obtains and develops their Identity. Things like character, morals, authenticity, treating your neighbor with all the dignity which they deserve and you as well. A society which idealizes Victimhood is a society that will fail. Notice most people who are “victims” tend to occupy a certain block within our culture? Hint, acting like a victim, despite what a culture might have said you were, is a certain route to depression, anxiety, hostilities, a very limited scope AND incredibly biased view on the world and mankind’s available knowledge. “Let the first person or tribe or nation that is without sin cast the first stone.” I wised up to this very young. I learned what MY people did to other Native Americans and it makes my stomach turn BUT I DONT JUDGE PEOPLE FROM A DIFFERENT ERA WITH TODAYS IDEALS. The world was a savagely violent place where people killed or were killed, sometimes for no easily visible reason. AND all major cultures did this, ALL races did this, And yea that includes us Indians ok folks? And if you doubt that, I can point you to truck loads of reference material to learn true history. I am Native American yes but I am an American first and always a human being infinitely. I rarely wake up thinking, oh poor me the victim like many minorities in our world today as they have been brainwashed by toxic ideals and toxic people. I gave up this destructive viewpoint luckily, but many it appears haven’t been so lucky. Oh no, that wasn’t luck. It was a CHOICE……

Progress. such a great word. And still today used to defend the leftist encroachment into everything great about our (American, or any) culture. The Metaverse all this other nonsense.. "You can't stop progress." "Progress" .. the same words used to justify what was done to the Indians and the wildlife of this nation. It's because the same people, or people who believe the same exact way, are the ones leading the charge. The World Economic Forum, the Silicon Valley aristocrat CEOs who talk in private about how to change the world without a care to what any of us want.
It's all the same type of thinking. So great that you brought those things up.
It saddens me that most of these types (people who support natives, people who love and support preserving nature and primitive ways of life) fully support the Democrats and leftist politicians of our time because of the false thinking that they care about them and the environment. The only thing they care about and the only thing they ever cared about is power. This is why you never see any of their supposed causes getting any better.
Racism is all but gone 99% .... but they still constantly harp on it how women and black people are oppressed... Do they EVER talk about Natives ?? No. Do they EVER talk about actual oppression in other countries in the Middle East or elsewhere where geocide is occurring? NEVER. And in fact the activists who do talk about that are shunned and exiled by the Democrats / leftists. Never allowed to speak and never in the same platforms as the leftists.
The Democrats have been in power now and control of the Executive and both halves of the legislative branch since 2020 and what has been done for natives? Nooooothing.
And nothing ever will.. I realize you're in Germany but it's probably the same the world over. Natives aren't high enough in numbers to help them win elections. Probably the main reason why they don't give af about them.

Beautiful words ❤ I wish ppl from both Americas, like REAL ones, had much more to say in "mass media" than they do. Their culture is as beautiful and diverse as that of Ancient Europe before christianisation. As a Polish, and therefore Slavic, woman, I totally stand for total and unusurped freedom of every nation, belief and culture, as long as it does not bring harm to innocents ❤ Native American and Old Asian people are my very favorite. It's sad that China, Japan, Korea, India and Philippines became so comercialised, just like we here in Europe. Little to nothing remained out of their raw original beliefs. Noone prays to Slavic Gods anymore, little to noone takes the Norse pantheon and values seriously, Taoist metaphysics have becime sugarcoated and forgotten, African countries became so infused with christianity and islam that if You practice Your Native ways there, they'll call You a "witch". Similar thing can be said here in Poland, though noone here had died because of it, luckily... What I mean is.... When entire world seem to have largely forgotten their Roots, the Natives of both American continents still hold and cling strong to their unaltered culture, believes and traditions. It's such a rare gem. We ALL should take a HUGE inspiration from these wonderful people. Something we could all learn and benefit from. Lakota, Navajo, Apache, or any other tribe and nation, BE PROUD of who You are, cause You surely, trully deserved it ❤ Love from Poland 🇵🇱

I'm a white mut born and raised in a town in between two reservations. Mom's boyfriend was Mexican, his kids Native/Mexican. Only sadness I saw was how one reservation had a lot of opposition to teaching town folk, not the town folk from hindering the reservation. Gladly, the community in both town and reservation are learning together and love the land just the same. I did see drugs as a common threat, town or reservation. I have been invited to ceremonies and a lot of good people just want to teach/learn. We can only unite when everyone is willing to learn. My white history made it seem like I was destined to be an alcoholic, German/Irish. History shows that every group of people fought for land. History also shows insane people do insane things. Destiny is not our past, it's our actions that shape our future. I strongly believe everyone needs to learn how to take care of whatever land they are on. People as a whole are very wasteful and greedy.

My existence is resistance is absolutely it. Although I had lost EVERYTHING because my European ancestors were colonized as invasive, nosy Christians by the Syrians, I regained some of the understanding why I'm different back after doing the second DNA test from a second company (I live in India). It showed that I have DNA from 12 different pools, including NW Africa, Native American (Pima County and Central American, both of which I didn't even know about) Tuvan, and SE India in ascending order, aside from my European pools. India is the largest DNA pool after Sardinia. Sardinia needs to be looked at further to see if there's any mixing of blood there. But somehow, that Indian mindset survived hundreds of years or maybe a few thousand years. This DNA report explained EVERYTHING about my life, being deaf, growing up Heathen and seeking for answers outside of the usual Christian environment I found myself hemmed in and having to fight it in deep south Texas, and eventually, gradually growing into a Hindū mindset over 25+ years unconsciously until I found out over 5 years ago that I'm really Hindū. I finally found out what I am based on what I have experienced as a person. It all makes sense now.

I'm only 1/32 native Miami, grew up entirely removed from the culture with zero exposure to it. My great great grandmother was forcefully assimilated into society when she married a white man (I'm not sure if the marriage was willing, but I doubt it) and when her only surviving child was white passing, he discarded the culture entirely. Now I'm 97% white and 3% Miami and I keep hearing mixed things about what it is to reconnect, and if I should. On the one hand, the Miami nation encourages reconnection so long as you have proof of heritage, but on the other, I hear so many concerns as to if it's appropriate for white individuals to "reconnect" in order to be a member of a racial minority. And no part of me is native, not my appearance or my culture or my upbringing, only a small drop of water in the lake of my genes. And then again, I hear stories that this shouldn't discourage me because the government uses blood quantum to erase the indigenous, that if I have ancestors that are native and I embrace the culture, language and customs then that determines my nativeness- not my appearance or race. But it seems very confusing, and for a group that's suffered so much, the last thing I would want is to trudge all over their culture and rob it from them.

Exactly. My bf is from a northern tribe and they're very, very mixed and lighter skinned. We were discussing skintone one day and he seemed confused as to why I referred to natives as medium skinned, since all the natives he knew had light skin, so it must be a myth.
I found out I am also NA,29%, and I'm light/medium skinned(I am 60% european),darker than his mom who is apparently 1/2. My dad is medium, he would be about 60% Native, his mom is medium/tan, she would likely be an even higher %. They are from Mexico.
It all depends on the region and how much mixing there has been. Generally, I feel like you won't find many porcelain natives, so that is why I was saying "medium"; it's a general umbrella term that applies to most, not all.
